Kanye West Promises Jay-Z's 'Anti-Auto-Tune' <i>Blueprint 3</i> Will Be 'Amazing'

NEW YORK — "Where amazing happens" doesn't just take place on the NBA courts — it also happens in Kanye West's studio. The Grammy winner says Jay-Z's long-percolating Blueprint 3 will be well worth the long wait the MC's fans have been enduring.

"Jay is in control of everything in his domain," Kanye, the album's producer, said last week during a promotional visit for his book, "Thank You and You're Welcome."

"He's just been working on it, and it's gonna be amazing when he drops it. I think it's good he's taking his time to give people the best product possible and not being rushed by this fast-food, media-outlet, Internet, everything-is-getting-leaked, people-stealing your-songs-before-you-can-mix-them-and-put-them-online world we're living in right now."

Kanye revealed that he and Jay went back in and made some alterations to B3 since they first started.

"We actually removed all the songs with Auto-Tune off of his album," West said, "to make the point that this is an anti-Auto-Tune album, even though I released an album that has all Auto-Tune!

"It doesn't matter to me," Kanye laughed about Jay not wanting to incorporate the sound that is featured so heavily on Kanye's 808s & Heartbreak. "It's music; it's just sonics. I like Auto-Tune so I do it, but you want the other thing — like you'll wear a suit to a wedding and gym shoes to a basketball game. I think it's a perfect moment for Jay to provide some gym shoes to a basketball game right now."

No release date has been set for Blueprint 3, however, last week, Jay-Z secured his release from Def Jam Records, which will allow the album to come out on his own Roc Nation label, presumably in partnership with Rock Nation (although the specifics of that deal have not been confirmed). Meanwhile, Kanye has been in the studio, grabbing inspiration for his own next album.

Irv Gotti had grand plans for Nas several years ago when he announced his fellow Queens native would be signing to Murder Inc. Records. Well, we all know Nas never came to the Inc., but I.G. says he's remained tight friends with Esco and the two may even work together again. Gotti is still a fan of Nas' music, but he prefers it when he keeps his raps simple.

"I like Nas," Gotti said. "First of all, Nas is my brother — another one of my brothers. But I personally like Nas when he's ignorant. Whenever Nas gets political or he starts thinking or he wants to change the world, it's good, but I personally like it more when Nas is on his QB, ignorant n---a sh--. When he's on [a] 'Made You Look' [vibe]. When he's on his arrogant sh--. When Nas dumbs himself down, he's nicer to me. I tell him that sh-- all the time. ... When he's on some n---a sh--, he's nicer."

However, Irv is the last one to try and give the mic legend advice on his marital woes.

"I was with him yesterday," Gotti explained. "Me and Nas is family ... No, I didn't even talk to him [about Kelis]. I gotta steer clear of that. That's that man's personal feelings. I'm there for him. If he wanna go out, party, chill — I'm a phone call away."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

A lot of people out there call themselves journalists, but Datwon Thomas is someone you should never question. Homie has credentials galore. The founder of King and the Web site Hookt.com recently stepped down as the editor in chief of XXL. We already know Datwon has a bunch of things up his sleeve, and we just found out that he is the new COO and editor in chief of the Russell Simmons-backed Globalgrind.com. He told us that it was tough to leave the magazine, but he's excited for his next move.

"It was definitely a hard decision, but it opens up the door for a new beginning," he explained.

Datwon said that his highlights at the publication over the past year have included the Freshman 10 cover as well as the recent cover featuring Eminem as the Punisher.

"More than likely it's gonna be some fly stuff," he said about what he plans to bring to his next position. "I think if people check my résumé, a lot of things I've been with have been successful and really well. I look forward to seeing what I'mma do too. I'm a fan of me."

T.I. Begins Prison Sentence

Rapper will serve 366-day sentence on weapons conviction.

T.I. turned himself in Tuesday (May 26) at an Arkansas federal prison, where the rapper will begin serving a 366-day sentence stemming from his 2007 arrest for attempting to illegally attempting to purchase firearms in Atlanta.

According to several reports, Tip is now in custody at the low-security wing of the Forrest City Federal Correctional Complex, where the rapper will circulate with the rest of the inmates without preferential treatment.

There is some confusion over when T.I. actually arrived at the facility. TMZ first reported that the rapper had turned himself in before his scheduled noon deadline, citing confirmation from T.I.'s attorneys.

However, a report from an NBC affiliate in Georgia, 41 NBC, indicated T.I. was not in custody, citing a rep from the prison who claimed the rapper was not listed in custody shortly after his scheduled deadline, and an Associated Press report said T.I. arrived later than his scheduled deadline. The report said the rapper showed up approximately 29 minutes late, stating that a black van with Georgia license plates and tinted windows pulled up to the prison. Police had to rope off well wishers, reporters and others gathered down the road from the prison, according to the report.

This is not the first time confusion has arisen regarding T.I. and his sentencing. An Associated Press report earlier this month suggested T.I. would only serve up to two months of his scheduled jail time. However, MTV News later confirmed the rapper will have to serve at least 10 months of his time.

Inquiries made by MTV News on Tuesday to T.I.'s lawyers and record label, Atlantic Records, had not been returned at press time.

Last week, the rapper's lawyers had requested a two-week delay in the sentence, and hoped the rapper could serve his term at a facility closer to his home in Atlanta. That request was denied on Friday.

It is unclear if the rapper's tardiness on Tuesday will affect his plea deal. Under the terms of his arraignment, the rapper completed a number of community service hours and outreach, advising teens against making the type of mistake he made. In October 2007, Tip was arrested on the eve of the BET Hip-Hop Awards after attempting to purchase an array of guns, a crime for a previously convicted felon such as T.I.

T.I.'s then-impending prison term, of course, was the subject of MTV's recent "T.I.'s Road to Redemption" series.

Tip was scheduled to turn himself in on Tuesday after bidding his fans farewell during a going-away show Sunday night in Atlanta. Soulja Boy Tell'em, Main and members of T.I.'s Grand Hustle roster of artists feted the rapper at the performance, held in Atlanta's Philips Arena.

T-Pain Says He Was 'The Best Of Friends' With Dolla

Dolla was a rapper on the rise, with a Show & Prove feature in XXL under his belt and an MTV Jams hit in "Who the F--- Is That," featuring T-Pain.

Tragedy struck, however, when Dolla was fatally shot a week ago at a high-end shopping mall in Los Angeles. The rapper, only 21, was gunned down in the parking lot of the Beverly Center after allegedly engaging in a dispute with a man, Aubrey Louise Berry, 23, whom police have charged in the incident.

T-Pain, a fellow Akon signee, collaborated with Dolla — who was signed to Jive Records and working on his debut, Dolla & A Dream — and expressed remorse over his fallen friend.

"Man," T-Pain sighed to MTV News. "It happens every day. It don't take nothing but time before it happens to someone you know. We had problems when I first got signed. [But] then we worked it out, and after that we was the best of friends. ... It kind of sucks. And we just got our friendship straightened out, then all of this had to happen."

Dolla was laid to rest over Memorial Day weekend in Georgia. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the memorial was held for the rapper in the East Point neighborhood of Atlanta at the Faith Love Center. Family and friends were present as Dolla was buried in a traditional Muslim funeral service, the AJC reported.

Berry, who fled the scene after his dispute with Dolla and was later captured at the airport in Los Angeles, had his bail lowered from $5 million to $2.1 million on Tuesday (May 26), according to The Associated Press.

MTV Movie Awards Will Be 'Edgy, Unpredictable,' Mark Burnett Promises

When it comes to this year's MTV Movie Awards, executive producer Mark Burnett has left no stone unturned to make sure that everything from the host to the music to the movie clips are sure to dazzle and delight the audience.

With a slew of celebrities already announced to be stopping by on May 31 to hand out statues to all the winners, it also doesn't hurt that Eminem and the Kings of Leon have been tapped to perform. "This year, for 2009, we have some incredible music performances, [including] Eminem's first performance of his new song," Burnett told MTV News. "And Kings of Leon are performing their new song. It's going to be a great night of music performances."

This year, Andy Samberg will be following in the distinguished footsteps of past hosts Ben Stiller, Sarah Silverman and Samuel L. Jackson. "Andy Samberg [is] totally unpredictable and has fun viral videos to air on the show," Burnett said.

But Burnett said the biggest draw of all will be the movie clips making their world premiere on the show. "Probably the biggest news of all is for the first time ever, we're doing sneak peeks of brand-new movies that no one's seen before," he said. "There's a sneak peek of the new 'Transformers' movie. People can't wait for that. There's a sneak peek of 'Harry Potter' — first time ever anyone's seen the new 'Harry Potter.' "

But Burnett knows that even "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" can't live up to the hype surrounding "New Moon." "The biggest sneak peek of all [is] 'Twilight,'" he said. " 'New Moon' are allowing a sneak peek, and it's being introduced by Robert [Pattinson] and Kristen [Stewart], so that's huge news around the world right now. ... The anticipation of those clips is going to be huge this year."

Burnett feels that the MTV Movie Awards is the perfect place to air the first clips from "New Moon," and his daughter tends to agree with him: "I have a 13-year-old, and when she found out a couple weeks ago there was going to be a 'Twilight' sneak peek, she said, 'Oh, my God! Everybody's going to want to see that.' Young girls live for 'Twilight.' The MTV Movie Awards is a correct venue for 'Twilight.' It's clearly something millions of Americans want."

In the end, though, it's all about the killer combination of all those things that is sure to set this year apart. "In 2009 it's going to be an edgy, unpredictable show. Andy Samberg — who knows what he's gonna do up there?" he said. "Eminem, absolutely explosive performer, and we're so lucky to have Eminem performing. And millions of young Americans will be on the edge of their seat to see, for the first time ever, movie clips from the new 'Transformers,' the new 'Harry Potter' and 'New Moon.' "

Vampire Vs. Vampire Or Batman Vs. Joker: Who Will Win Best Fight?

Posted: 27 May 2009 03:51 AM PDT

Tune in to the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET for the results of this cage match.
By Larry Carroll

Ever since the first caveman hit the second caveman over the head with a Brontosaurus bone, mankind has been fascinated by a fight. Man vs. man, woman vs. woman, whether it's over a spurned lover, stolen property or a simple "yo' mama" joke, few things are more exciting to watch — and once again, the MTV Movie Awards is here to recognize the most memorable brawls and battles of the past year.

Chances are you've never personally witnessed a battle between a demon and a supernatural prince; a pair of impossibly handsome vampires; a caped crusader and an anarchic clown; or two bridezillas brawling in the aisle. OK — if you went to college, you've probably seen three stoners trashing an apartment.

Be sure to head on over to the Best Fight voting page, where all of the above are currently embroiled in the final days of an even greater battle. The winners will take home the big trophy Sunday evening at 9 p.m. ET — but first, at the risk of angering some obviously hot-tempered talents, we handicap the competition:

Who's the Favorite?

If there's one thing the entertainment industry has learned in the past year, it's that you should never underestimate the power of the Twilighters. The big-screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's beloved novel surprised prognosticators last November by opening to record-breaking numbers, and the mere thought of Robert Pattinson and Cam Gigandet accepting an award onstage seems like enough to get thousands of teenage fingers clicking on that "vote" button. OME, indeed.

Who's the Underdog?

Can a movie that earns $500 million and eight Oscar nominations ever truly be an underdog? That might be the case with "The Dark Knight," whose fan- and critic-beloved splendor may have finally met its match in Robert Pattinson's carefully coiffured hair. Nevertheless, Joker vs. Batman was one of the highest moments in film from 2008, and if a fraction of those "Dark Knight" fans cast their vote, the Twilighters could be in more trouble than Waylon Forge on his boat.

Inside Scoop

» During the wedding-shower scene in "Bride Wars," many of the extras in the background are wives and girlfriends of current players for the Boston Red Sox. The movie was filmed largely in the Boston area.

» When Seth Rogen originally wrote "Pineapple Express," he had planned to play the role that eventually went to James Franco. It was a similar bit of serendipity to "Superbad," which he had written with the intention of playing the Jonah Hill role.

» The character of Hellboy's real name is Anung Un Rama, which means "the Beast of the Apocalypse."

Owen Wilson, Robin Williams Congratulate Ben Stiller On MTV Generation Award

It's a good time to be Ben Stiller. This past weekend, the veteran funnyman took down the Terminator, as his "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" upset perceived favorite "Terminator Salvation" at the box office. This Sunday, he'll receive our highest honor at the MTV Movie Awards, taking home the Generation Award. And if all that weren't enough, he also has some high-profile friends who are mighty impressed with his new piece of hardware.

"I think there's no question he deserves it," grinned Owen Wilson when we caught up with him recently to discuss Stiller's Generation Award. "It's long overdue, in fact. I was up in arms the last few years when he wasn't up there. When you think of all the great stuff Ben's worked on, it's pretty amazing. Going back all the way to the show he did, and then right up to ['Battle of the Smithsonian']."

Ricky Gervais, who co-stars in "Smithsonian" alongside Stiller and Wilson, said that while he's proud of his friend, one Hollywood star might be protesting outside the MTV ceremony. "Let me tell you something about Ben, shall I?" he teased. "There's a monkey in this film, called Crystal the monkey. It's probably one of the cutest things in the world; it's a tiny little thing, a tiny Capuchin monkey. It wears a diaper; there's nothing cuter. He hates it!" deadpanned Gervais. "So, that's your Ben Stiller."

Another Stiller collaborator on the "Museum" movies, Robin Williams, similarly took advantage of the opportunity to poke fun at the nominee. "That's how desperate you are? That's like giving Macaulay Culkin a lifetime-achievement award," he said, faking outrage. "He's getting a lifetime-achievement award at the age of what, 40?"

While Stiller would appreciate the comment, he is actually 43. "That's so wonderful, because normally you'd have [an old man saying], 'Thank you for this wonderful award. When your mother and I was growing up, there was no Twitter,' " grinned Williams. "Cool, a lifetime-achievement award for Ben Stiller — and he's not that old. ... That's so lovely. Well, that really shows we're a short-attention-span culture. That's going to stick with me for the rest of my life."

As for Stiller himself, he told us that he's been getting a bit reflective ever since hearing he'd be receiving the Generation Award this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET.

"Thoughts? Well, the thought of age creeps in there. And I guess I'm getting to that point in life where you can have an award named the Generation Award. That means you must be at least a few generations into your life," he explained. "When something like that comes up, all you can think is, 'Wow! Really? That can't be it!'

"You look at the clip reel and think, 'That's how I'm going to be remembered?' I'd better get working on some other stuff!" Stiller grinned. "But no, I'm very proud [of my award], it's very nice."

Mike Tyson's 4-Year-Old Daughter Dies

A day after she was badly injured in a treadmill accident, the 4-year-old daughter of Mike Tyson has died.

Multiple sources are reporting that Exodus Tyson was pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m. local time on Tuesday following a brief period on life support. The daughter of the former world boxing champion was injured on Monday at the family's home in Phoenix.

Tyson's daughter was discovered by her 7-year-old brother Monday with a cable from the machine wrapped around her neck. After the girl's mother took her off the cable and called authorities, she was transported to a local hospital. The 42-year-old Tyson traveled from Las Vegas to Phoenix on Monday to be with his daughter.

"We are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love and prayers from all over the world," Tyson said in a statement released to the media. "There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus. We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal."

Although the youngest world heavyweight champion in history retired from professional boxing in 2005, Tyson has been quite visible lately. Currently in theaters is "Tyson," a probing documentary that aims to explore the troubled sports legend. He also has a high-profile cameo in the upcoming comedy "The Hangover," due in theaters next month.

While speaking with MTV News recently about the films, Tyson opened up about his relationship with his children.

"I look forward to having some grandkids one day," he said. "And I'm really trying to work into re-creating my relationship, rebuilding my relationship with my children. [In the past I was so wrapped up in being] this Mike Tyson, 'Iron Mike,' heavyweight champion of the world or whatever I was, that I neglected my children and people I was in love with at one time. And I'm bearing the brunt of it right now. At this stage in my life, I'm starting to feel the pain and the effects from it, and I would like to rekindle that relationship."

A heartfelt Tyson also said that even if the allure of fame came on as strong as it once did, his love for Exodus had changed his priorities. "I would give all that [fame] up if it caused me losing what I have now: That little condo with my girlfriend and my daughter and having a relationship with the rest of my kids."

Diddy, Russell Brand Offer Andy Samberg Sage Advice For Movie Awards

Posted: 26 May 2009 01:28 AM PDT

Don't slam the Jonas Brothers, do ignore the teleprompter, former VMA hosts say.
By Eric Ditzian

Diddy

Since Dennis Miller emceed the inaugural MTV Movie Awards in 1992, "Saturday Night Live" has proven to be a fertile breeding ground for our awards-show hosts. "SNL" vets like Eddie Murphy, Jimmy Fallon and Mike Myers have since captained the Movie Awards, and this Sunday, May 31, at 9 p.m., Andy Samberg will assume hosting duties for the first time.

With just days to go until the big night, two men who have themselves quarterbacked MTV awards shows — "Get Him to the Greek" co-stars Russell Brand and Sean "Diddy" Combs — dealt out some wise words for Samberg heading into Sunday's action.

"Do not criticize George W. Bush," Brand, who hosted last year's VMAs, told MTV News. "You will receive death threats. Do not jokingly criticize the Jonas Brothers. You will receive less-threatening death threats."

During last September's show, Brand poked fun at the JoBros for their purity rings and abstinence pledges and aimed several barbs at then-president Bush. During our conversation, Brand was quick to make clear that he had absolutely nothing again the Jonases, calling them "lovely" and saying the band has forgiven him for the jokes.

Quashed JoBros beef notwithstanding, the British comedian still cautioned Samberg to avoid any sort of gesture that might elicit a death threat. "There's nothing worse than opening a letter and then seeing in it is a death threat," he said. "You think, 'Hold on a minute. I wasn't looking forward to the letter particularly. Now I fear death.' Ruins a perfectly good read."

And what sage advice might 2005 VMA host Diddy have for Samberg? "I would recommend Mr. Samberg just get drunk, throw away the script and have a good time," Diddy told MTV News. "If I could do it all over again, I would just be as drunk as I could be, and I wouldn't pay attention to the teleprompter. I would just have a great time."

In a nod to successful "SNL" hosts past, Diddy added, "[An MTV Awards show is] definitely one of the hardest stages in the world to host, and I think he'll do a great job, because he's been on probably the hardest stage in the entire world, 'Saturday Night Live.' "

Cam'ron Relishes 'Competition' From Rival Crew

Posted: 26 May 2009 03:51 AM PDT

Plus: Pitbull promises 'a lot of surprises' on his upcoming album, in Mixtape Daily.
By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes

Cam'ron
Photo: Asylum

Apologies for no main pick Monday. Hey, guys, we were on vacation like most of you! Even the diligent duo (a trio, whenever J. Rod comes through) need a break sometime. But we promise we'll make up for it during the next few days. And next Monday, we have a blockbuster. So there it is. A little bit of Pitbull, some Killa Cam and on Wednesday, we're gonna get ignorant!

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Mixtape: The Last Dragon

Executive Producer: Duke Da God

Conspicuously Absent: Hell Rell, J.R. Writer and Freekey Zekey are on the mixtape. Would have loved to see Jim Jones and Juelz, but we heard you, Cam — no reunion.

Starring: Cam'ron, Lil Wayne and others

Essential Info: Duke included the Cam'ron and Jadakiss record "Let's Talk About It" on his mixtape, although you didn't get the duet on Cam's Crime Pays album. At least not yet. Cam is planning to re-release the album in July with a couple of new tracks. The new version will coincide with the release of his movie "The Bakery." This summer, he also says to look for the U.N.'s debut.

"U.N. album, it was supposed to come out August 5th, but I wanna come out around the same time as some people I'm in competition with," he explained to us. "I wanna wait for their date and put that [U.N.] album out the same date their album comes out."

When asked what rival crew he was talking about, Killa declined to say.

"Whatever date you see the U.N. album and somebody else's coming out, you'll get a whiff of [who I'm talking about]. I hear [the other crew's] coming out September or something. If I don't get no whiff of when the album is coming out, then we'll stick to our original date and put the U.N. album out, like, August 5th or August 12th. Then I'm putting out another [solo] album in December, definitely."

So far, Cam's prized member of the U.N. is fellow Harlem native Vado. "Vado got a lot of hits. We got a few other acts we working with," Killa said. "To keep it 100, Vado got the streets in a smash, and Harlem, he's got an unbelievable buzz. Everybody in Harlem already know what it is. He's got the 'hood in a frenzy. I'm trying to bring the next new stuff out."

Mixtape: Sh---in' on the Industry

Starring: Pitbull

100 Percent Fronter Proof: "Watch It Drop," "Cocaine Cowboy" (he raps from the perspective of the coke!) and "Dope Ball"

Essential Info: Yeah, Pit's mixtape title is arrogant as hell, but Chico always has a reason to smile. Pit is one of the bona fide kings of the club. Every year, you can expect Pit to drop at least a couple of monsters that reach past the urban soil and crush the Latin and mainstream markets. You heard his songs all throughout "Fast & Furious.

Now that he's free from TVT Records, Pit said there's nothing holding him back. Pit's LP Rebelution is set for either August or September.

"This album is gonna be just the way I'm seeing things," he said. "Whether it be hip-hop, the world, whether it be just my city in general, you're gonna see I have a lot of different takes on this album. I didn't know if I wanted to do a double album, give them a whole album of different types of records — conscious records on one end, then the whole club, high-energy on one end. There's a whole lot of things I want to say that I been holding back, because I felt the last label couldn't really handle what I had to bring to the table.

"It's gonna be a lot of surprises," he added. "I'm not the beef type. I'm not here to catch beef, so some exec can live it up. If I'mma catch beef, I'm gonna catch it with some exec. And it's gonna be the truth."
