Make it two in a row. After putting down roots in Los Angeles last year, the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will return to the City of Angels on August 28 for the 28th annual celebration. The show will air live from the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live venue at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).

"We are thrilled to return to Los Angeles where the energy of the city will help power the creative spirit of the 28th annual VMAs," said Stephen Friedman, president of MTV in a statement. "The city is the perfect backdrop for all the musical moments, mayhem and magic that make the VMAs such a notorious celebration."

The 2010 VMAs posted the best ratings for the show since 2002, highlighted by much-anticipated performances by Taylor Swift (who debuted her song "Innocent," which addressed 2009's Kanye West incident) and West himself, who also debuted a new song, the raunchy "Runaway." The show also featured performances by Eminem with Rihanna, Drake and Best New Artist winner Justin Bieber, B.o.B. with Hayley Williams, Florence and the Machine and Linkin Park, plus a pre-show appearance by Nicki Minaj and Black Eyed Peas mastermind will.i.am. Host Chelsea Handler kept the night humming along with some classic bits, including a skit with Lindsay Lohan and the first-ever appearance of a hot tub on the VMA stage.

And, oh yeah, did we mention Lady Gaga's infamous meat dress?

"We are proud to host the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles, the creative capital of the world. And we look forward to showcasing our city's exciting new downtown entertainment attractions," said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of the show's return to his city.

Taylor Lautner Fights For His Right To 'Twilight' In His #1 MTV Moment

After finding phenomenal success as Jacob Black in the first "Twilight" movie, Taylor Lautner's role as the lovable werewolf was in jeopardy by the time talk of "New Moon" began to ramp up in December 2008. There seemed to be a chance that the then-scrawny Lautner might not return to the flick.

Before tonight's "MTV First: Taylor Lautner" debut at 7:56 p.m. ET on air and online, we've been counting down Lautner's finest MTV moments — and at #1, we see him fighting to keep his role as Jacob Black.

"I have been working out. I've been working out since the day we finished filming 'Twilight.' I just weighed myself today; I've put on 19 pounds," he told MTV News of how he was working to ensure he'd be Jacob from movie one right through the very last flick.

The actor admitted that he was working hard and fast to make sure he could be the Jacob that author Stephanie Meyer had always envisioned. "I'm guaranteeing [director Chris] Weitz 10 more [pounds] by filming. I get to meet Chris on Friday, in two days, so I'm excited," he said. "I'm going to have lunch with him."

Well, whatever Lautner did and worked. It's now April 2011, and with production basically wrapped on the very last film in the franchise, it's clear the actor and the fans couldn't imagine anyone else playing the role.

"My job for 'Twilight' was to bring 'Twilight' Jacob to life — the friendly, happy-go-lucky little Jacob," Lautner explained back then of his arc. "And my job for 'New Moon' is completely different; I've been looking forward to that. I've been getting ready for it, and I can assure them that I will follow through with that job."

Britney Spears Tour Invite 'Is Such An Honor,' Nervo Say

Aussie DJ duo tell MTV News they're ready to 'spread the Nervo love' on Femme Fatale tour.

Nervo's Mim and Liv will be joining Britney Spears this summer for her highly anticipated Femme Fatale tour, alongside Nicki Minaj and Jessie and the Toy Boys.

When the Aussie twins spoke to MTV News on Tuesday, the same day the tour lineup was announced, they seemed genuinely surprised by the news, calling the slot "such an honor."

"We have worked with her team of people for songwriting camps and stuff like that, but we've never met Britney. It's been a dream to have one of our record productions on her album, but we didn't get there this time," Mim said.

All the acts on the tour are female, so Liv thinks "it's going to be ladies night every night. I imagine we'll be playing some of our club releases," she added of Nervo's set. "It'll be a DJ set and very electronic and house-based. We're really excited to be able to warm everyone up with some sexy house music."

The girls are also excited about the prospect of meeting Britney. "I wonder if I'll be starstruck? I just love her. I just love her records. She always releases great pop records. I really respect her," Mim said.

"You hear rumors that [the openers] never really get to meet [the main acts]," Liv said. "I hope we get to hang out. We've been told we're going to be on an RV for a lot of it. I love the whole experience of being on a tour bus. I love the road."

Since the tour seems to be all about girl power, the two sassy ladies explained what makes them such femme fatales. "I guess we have a no-fear attitude," Mim said. "We don't let our being girls stop us. Certainly DJing is a very male-dominated [field], and we haven't let us being girls stop us."

Bottom line: They're hoping through their house-music set they can "spread the Nervo love."

In the age of Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Willow Smith and the cast of "Glee," teen group sensations have slid off the radar after the boy band and girl group hurricane of the late '90s and early 2000s. Mindless Behavior are here to change that.

Filling the hot slot of Janet Jackson's opening act, Mindless Behavior are currently traveling the country for her Number Ones Tour. MTV News caught up with Roc Royal, Ray Ray, Princeton and Prodigy in their dressing room at the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York City to find out what it means to be "mindless," what it's like opening for Janet and what we can expect from the 13-year-olds as they strive to headline their own tour someday soon.

"Two years ago, we all auditioned for the group," Princeton explained from behind his large designer sunglasses. "Our managers took us to Interscope, and they signed us to Streamline Records. And then, after that, we started working on our album, #1 Girl." Mindless Behavior's yet-to-be-released debut album will include featured artists Ciara, Lil Twist and Tyga.

Regarding the band's name, Princeton explained, "Mindless Behavior is our movement that we want everybody to join."

"Being mindless is having confidence and being yourself," Ray Ray added.

The boys intend for their album to find mass appeal. "Our music is very R&B and pop," Princeton described. "When you listen to our first album ... there are a lot of songs that adults and kids can relate to."

As far as subject matter, Ray Ray noted, "All of our songs talk about girls. We love the ladies."

With inspirations including Diddy, Eminem, Michael Jackson, Kanye West and Usher, the boys of Mindless Behavior bring wild synchronized dance moves, some high notes and some serious rapping to the stage.

"When our manager told us that we were going to be on tour with Janet Jackson, we couldn't believe it!" Ray Ray gushed. "The first time I met Janet, I was stuck. I couldn't move."

Princeton recounted, "I kept telling them, 'Is it just me, or is the room warm?' I think it was just me because I was so nervous."

"When we walked in her room, it felt like we were in heaven," Roc Royal remembered.

Prodigy was tickled by the experience: "She's really relaxed and quiet, and she looks gorgeous."

Janet even offered the young hip-hop artists a bit of advice: "She said to keep doing what we do and we're very talented," Princeton said, beaming. "Coming from Janet, that was big."

The boys said they have felt very welcome on Janet's stage thus far on the tour. "Janet fans are amazing!" Roc Royal said.

"There's not one person in the crowd that's sitting down or looking away or texting or doing something else," Princeton added. "They're always looking at us."

The fact that Janet was the headliner didn't stop dozens of Mindless fans from waiting outside of Radio City on the three nights of performances, screaming toward all windows in sight with the hope that the boys were in one of them.

"Every time we're in New York, they're outside waiting," Princeton said, gesturing toward the nearby open window through which screams repeatedly traveled.

"They inspire us to do better onstage," Roc Royal noted.

"And they like to give us gifts!" Ray Ray said, referring to the mountains of merchandise from the M&M Store piled around the dressing room.

The boys of Mindless Behavior hope to treat their fans with a full headlining tour of their own sometime soon. "When we headline our first tour, it's going to be something that people have not seen before," Princeton promised.

"It's going to be something that the fans love," added Prodigy.

Roc Royal exclaimed: "Everything's going to be mindless!"

Taylor Lautner's 10 Best MTV Quotes

Gear up for Lautner's 'MTV First' interview Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET by looking back at a few choice lines he's given us.
By Eric Ditzian

Taylor Lautner

Taylor Lautner has changed a lot since we first met him in April 2008 on the Portland, Oregon, set of "Twilight." He's gone from a skinny 16-year-old who not everyone believed would be able to convincingly portray jacked-up werewolf Jacob Black to a 19-year-old heartthrob who elicits screams from fans every time he doffs his shirt and who is set to become the highest-paid teen in Hollywood.

Not too bad, right? Yet as his body has transformed and his celebrity has exploded, Lautner has managed to stay the same person. That's the unmistakable takeaway as we dive back into our archival interviews with the actor in the run-up to "MTV First: Taylor Lautner," a 30-minute interview set for Wednesday on air and online. From back in '08 up until this very day, Lautner has remained a funny, goofy, sometimes shy, always thankful kid.

With those thoughts in mind, check out our 10 favorite Lautner quotes from MTV News interviews and tell us if you can possibly disagree:

10. "I think they might start crying." — On the reaction to fans seeing him shirtless in "New Moon"

9. "It is a little awkward for me to watch myself and, actually, when we're filming those scenes." — On shooting those shirtless scenes

8. "One second I'll be listening to country, and then the next I'll be listening to techno and then R&B. It's ridiculous. I am all over the place with my music." — On his musical tastes

7. "It's like the worst superhero power, possibly, to get, and how you're going to take that and use it for good and how you're going to be creative with that." — On the abilities of Stretch Armstrong, a character he signed on to play last year

6. "It's my favorite, because it's the most guy-friendly by far. It's dangerous. There's a lot of action. The romance is still there, but the action level is stepped up way more." — On why "Eclipse" is his favorite "Twilight" book

5. "The quote I love the most is Jacob's quote: 'Does my half being naked bother you?' That quote just cracks me up. Because, you know, that's when he's shirtless, not wearing a top." — On his favorite line in a "Twilight" book

4. "It gets kind of itchy." — On his "Twilight" wig

3. "It caught me by surprise when I read the book. I think I originally heard it happened through somebody who had already read it — and I didn't believe it. Then I read the book, and I was like, 'You've got to be kidding me.' " — On his initial reaction to the book release of "Breaking Dawn"

2. "There's a scene where I'm carrying [Kristen Stewart], and it's also, like, four pages of dialogue. So I'm carrying her, and we're walking through the woods, and I'm talking to her, and it's a pretty intense talk. We actually had plans, a rig that was basically going to carry her, and I was just going to pretend that I was carrying her. We got there on the day, and the rig didn't look very natural. They were like, 'What are we going to do?' and I'm like, 'I'll just carry her. She's like, what, 110 pounds? It's no big deal!' " — On filming an "Eclipse" scene with his co-star

1. "To growl. I'm asked that by a lot by fans, and I don't like doing that. So, fans, please don't ask me that. Wait for the movie." -- On his least-favorite question

After lots of speculation, Britney Spears confirmed Tuesday (April 12) that she'd be bringing Nicki Minaj along on tour. The pairing of the Femme Fatale and the Barbie seems like a match made in pop-culture heaven, and Minaj couldn't agree more.

"I am beyond thrilled to tour with Britney. It's an honor. She's an icon," Nicki told MTV News in an exclusive statement. "This summer will be one for the books!"

Shortly after announcing the tour, Spears and Minaj struck up a Twitter conversation that felt as if they were already throwing slumber parties on their tour bus.

"Could not think of a sexier Femme Fatale than @NickiMinaj to come on tour with me! Gonna be a hot summer people!" Spears tweeted, kicking off the Twittermance. "The #FemmeFataleBARBZ wont know what hit em. Ready or not people, here we come...."

"Hot INDEED Your Fierceness!!! This tour's gonna KICK ASS!!! The #FemmeFataleBARBZ r READY!!! Let's GO!!!" Minaj tweeted back to the star, before adding, "Let's keep the 'other thing' a secret for now..."

Minaj is set to call into Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday to reveal what that big secret is, and Spears teased her fans one final time: "All good things to those who wait...."

Minaj will join Spears after she wraps up Lil Wayne's I Am Still Music Tour, which finishes May 1 in New Jersey. Spears' tour kicks off June 16 in Sacramento, California, and will run for 26 dates through North America, winding up August 13 in Toronto. Select tickets go on sale April 30.

"This is the Femme Fatale tour, and I'm thrilled to have the hot Nicki Minaj join me and [opening acts] Jessie and the Toy Boys and Nervo will get everyone on the dance floor," Spears said early Tuesday about the tour. "Can't wait to take the Femme Fatales on the road."

Only one more day until "Twilight" superstar Taylor Lautner graces MTV News with his hunky presence for "MTV First: Taylor Lautner," which premieres on air and online Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET. The 19-year-old star will exclusively debut the first trailer from his upcoming action/thriller "Abduction," after which the conversation will move to MTV.com where Lautner will sit down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz for a 30-minute interview.

If you Lautner fans weren't already excited about this exclusive event, we've got a little sneak peek of what you'll be privy to when you tune in and log on for our latest "MTV First." During the interview, Lautner discusses the similarities and inevitable comparisons between his confused young character, Nathan Price, and Jason Bourne.

"I would say Nathan Price's journey takes place before Jason Bourne's started," Lautner explained. "When Jason realized, when he was searching for his true identity, he was already a trained expert."

How about Nathan vs. Jason — who would win? "I think Nathan would need a little more training," Lautner said. "Give him a couple years, and we'll get there."

Lautner's co-star Lily Collins recently offered her thoughts on the Bourne comparisons, giving major props to Lautner for his work on the film.

"[He is] very Jason Bourne-esque, of course, with his own twist on it," Collins explained to MTV News of Taylor's character in the film. "It's a complete departure from Jacob. Obviously I'm in the movie so I'm biased, but I think it's going to completely shock his fans, and people that necessarily don't know him very well as Jacob that aren't 'Twilight' fans. I think he brings an aspect people haven't seen yet and [it's] very, very exciting."

Is Nicki Minaj A Good Fit For Britney Spears' Tour? Experts Weigh In

Posted: 12 Apr 2011 04:15 AM PDT

'If people are going mainly for Britney, they will be excited to see Nicki as well and vice versa,' one insider tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

After lots of rumors, it was officially announced Tuesday (April 12) that Britney Spears would be bringing along Nicki Minaj (as well as up-and-comers Nervo and Jessie and the Toyboys) on her Femme Fatale tour, kicking off this summer.

The Spears/Minaj matchup may not initially make sense, given their very different styles, but according to industry insiders who work on booking talent for venues throughout the country, this really is a match made in heaven.

"Bringing [together] two genres of music — one icon and one rising icon — is great for the music business. The combination of Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj on tour together is great for the music industry [and] shows its growing diversity," Matt Levine of Brandsway Creative, a branding and marketing group in New York City, explained to MTV News. "It gives concertgoers the opportunity to see two independently creative females excelling in their craft and showcasing their talent."

Dawn M. Britt, the director of public relations for the Venetian and Palazzo hotels in Las Vegas, said seeing these ladies on tour together screams girl power.

"Both Britney and Nicki give off a very 'girl power' attitude, and combining the Femme Fatale and Barbie themes is a smart marketing tool with the all-female tour," Britt explained. " ... Nicki is a mainstream rapper and collaborates with a lot of pop artists. Their audiences overlap enough that if people are going mainly for Britney, they will be excited to see Nicki as well and vice versa."

Britt said this tour makes tons of sense as it combines "two of the biggest names in music right now. Britney is a legend and in the midst of a huge comeback right now with her new Femme Fatale CD," she said. "Her recent performance in Vegas was a huge success and really got people excited for the tour. Nicki has been making a name for herself the last few years and is in high demand for collaborations and appearances."

Gary Bongiovanni, editor in chief of Pollstar, explained that Nicki is a good fit for the tour since "that tour likely needs a strong support act, and Nicki is not a bad choice. Options at this late date had to be limited." He added that since Spears is launching a new phase of her career, "Fan response on an act like Britney ... is always a question mark until you put the first shows on sale and the public answers the demand-level question with their wallets."

'Scream 4' Stars All Insist They're <i>Not</i> The Killer

'My character's not the killer because maybe she is,' Courteney Cox teases MTV News.

For the die-hard "Scream" fans out there, one of the many joys in watching the films for the first time is trying to figure out who the killer is. With the release of the fourth installment of the franchise just days away, rumors and speculation are running rampant across the interwebs.

To help you narrow down your list of potential killers, MTV News had the cast of "Scream 4" make a case for why you won't see their characters wielding any knives or wearing Ghostface masks come Friday.

"My character is not the killer, because she knows horror movies too well," Hayden Panettiere said of her spunky, know-it-all character Kirby Reed. "She knows how they work, and she's too terrified in that scene in the preview."

"I can't do it because O.J. already did it," Anthony Anderson joked about his character, Deputy Perkins.

"Yeah. That would be racist," added co-star Adam Brody. "You're not going to have the black guy killing all the white people."

"No," Anderson agreed.

"And yeah, my guy is just kind of a dummy," Brody said of Deputy Hoss. "I could be putting everyone on, but I don't think I have enough screen time to totally be the killer, but maybe?"

David Arquette, who returns to the franchise as Dewey Riley went for a more cryptic approach.

"I'm not the killer, because I am the killer," he said.

"My character's not the killer because maybe she is," Courteney Cox said of intrepid nosy reporter Gail Weathers, coincidentally echoing the same phrase as her onscreen husband.

"My character is not the killer because she's Sydney Prescott," said Neve Campbell, who returns to the franchise as the central character.

"My character Jill is not the killer because she's Sydney's cousin — hel-lo!" Emma Roberts argued.

And finally, Aimee Teegarden weighed in: "Why am I not the killer? I'm not the killer because I have great hair in the movie," she said. "And if you have great hair, you don't die — bottom line."

So what do you think, "Scream" fans? Is one of them lying? Tell us in the comments!

Akon Calls Nick Cannon 'Famous' Collabo 'Overdue'

Akon's year in music may seem like it's off to a slow start, but expect the Senegalese-American artist's name to be back to music-industry ubiquity shortly.

MTV News recently caught up with the singer/producer/executive on the set of Nick Cannon's video for "Famous," where Akon told us linking up with the actor/rapper (who's expecting twins with wife Mariah Carey) was opportune.

"I listened to ['Famous'] and I actually liked it," Akon said. "He does a lot of family-friendly stuff and I'm trying to go into that realm right now. I want to do a lot more family-friendly stuff, and Nick is the best at that. I feel like this was a collaboration way overdue."

On the set, Akon was friendly as always but didn't divulge any new details about his upcoming album, Stadium, which he hopes to release in September. Last year, the "Sexy Chick" singer revealed to MTV News that producer David Guetta had contributed to the project. For now, Akon plans to go on mini-tours and release new music just to whet the appetites of his fans. But he still isn't sure which song he'll drop first.

"I don't know what to release first," he said. "I'm so excited about the project itself, I'm like, 'OK, which record do I want to put out first?' I haven't quite decided but by the end of April I'll know exactly what I'mma do with the record."

'Kon was more assured in his reverence for Dr. Dre. Last year's "Kush," the official lead single from Dre's long-awaited Detox album, featured a vocal from Akon. "Dre is one of those guys ... he's a perfectionist in his own [right]," Akon said.

"You feel confident working with him because he's not going to let nothing go undone. In a way, that's great. But sometimes you're anxious too, like, 'Man I can't wait to let everybody hear this.' Ultimately, working with Dre was just amazing. Dre is very picky about who he decides to work with too. For him to call me and do [multiple] tracks on the record and be involved in more than one record on that album, it said a lot. It shows how much he really appreciated what I'm doing."

Jessie J Talks Hobbies, Local Slang On Her MTV News 'First Date'

We took the British songstress to a New York pub before her debut album, Who You Are, dropped Stateside on Tuesday.

NEW YORKMTV News' First Date series has taken us to some of the city's finest establishments (Joe's Shanghai in Chinatown, the Viacom cafeteria) as we've gotten up close and personal with up-and-coming artists we knew were well on their way to stardom. Our latest edition, featuring Jessie J, was extra special because we caught the British songstress the day before her musical-guest debut on "SNL."

Ms. J guided her date, MTV News' Steven Roberts, through a traditional English breakfast as she talked about, well, everything but her music. It should be noted that Jessie has already penned songs for pop royalty, including a co-writing credit on Miley Cyrus' "Party in the USA," and her debut album, Who You Are, has already gone platinum in the U.K., where she's considered something like pop royalty herself. Who You Are was released in the States on Tuesday (April 12) and features such tracks as the insanely vulgar, catchy "Do It Like a Dude" and the super sweet, Dr. Luke-produced "Price Tag."

That said, Jessie and Steven spent a lovely March afternoon at the Clerkenwell on the Lower East Side, where the pop singer took on essential getting-to-know-you topics like least-favorite words (hers is "slice"), hobbies (hers include cleaning, drawing and cooking, and she even offered to make Steven her famous lamb lasagna) and local slang. Most important, they tackled if and how the Brits were taught about the American Revolution (answer: "you don't get taught it in school").

School was never one of her strong suits, though, Jessie admitted. "I was so bad at history, math, science, geography ... anything academic." She added, "I really tried; it just never clicked with me. Every single report was, 'Jessica could do with not distracting people with her voice.' "

Topics also veered toward the serious, namely what she noted in her five-year-plan: "I think one of my ultimate dreams is to be able to make enough money to give money away and still be comfortable." Specifically, she'd like to help give back with "youth clubs around U.K. ... now they have youth vans, where basically the kids go on and the doors open and they just have like, PlayStations, and that to me, that's not communicating."

Kim And Khloe Kardashian Bond Over Their NBA Beaus

But which couple would win in a game of 2-on-2: Kim and Kris Humphries or Khloé and Lamar Odom?

Oh, the bonds that sisters share. For Khloé and Kim Kardashian, their ties include typical things like a love for shopping, shoes, makeup and such, but also their preferences in significant others.

For those who aren't keeping up with the Kardashians, Kim and Khloé are both romantically involved with professional basketball players. Kim is dating the New Jersey Nets' Kris Humphries, and Khloé is married to the Lakers' Lamar Odom. Humphries and Odom also play the same position: power forward.

When MTV News caught up with the lovely ladies at Redbook's family issue event Monday night, we asked if they've been having fun bonding over their shared love for basketball-playing boys.

"Absolutely. It's so funny, Kris will be like, 'Oh, Lamar had a great game. You should text him this, this and this,' " Kim said. "Things that I know nothing about, about the basketball world. It's funny, because I'll text Lamar funny things that Kris will tell me.

"Does he ever tell you the things I text him?" Kim asked her sister.

"No," Khloé said with a laugh.

"I texted him last night, 'Hey, get this triangle something up in the defense,' " Kim told Khloé. "I don't even know what it meant, and Lamar wrote, 'LOL, OK, how do you know that? OK, I'll do it.' "

"He needed a drink after that loss last night, so we were all sitting in Katsuya with [their brother] Rob, and he was laughing hysterically," Khloé recalled. "And he just kept going, 'Your sister!' But I thought he was talking about the phone call we had."

"No, it was me texting, 'Hey, great layup with the triangle formation,' " Kim said. "I don't even know what these things are."

When asked who would win in a game of 2-on-2, it created some tension.

"Me and Lamar," Khloé said confidently. "In yo' face!" "I would let you think that," Kim responded. "But I think that Kris and I would have some tricks up our sleeves."

"Oh, Kim, I would demolish your ass," Khloé insisted.

Would you put your money on Khloé and Lamar or Kim and Kris? Let us know in the comments!

On Tuesday (April 12), after weeks of speculation, it was revealed that Nicki Minaj would be joining Britney Spears' upcoming Femme Fatale tour, replacing Enrique Iglesias, who dropped off the high-profile trek earlier this month.

It's a big look for Nicki, though, to some, her addition was a bit of a head-scratcher. After all, she's certainly not the traditional Britney opener, and with just one album (and some mixtapes) under her belt, it remains to be seen how Minaj's live show will translate to Spears' massive stage. Oh, and then there's the very legitimate question of whether the two artists' audiences are even aware of the other's existence.

Still, at this point, Minaj has done just about everything to prove those naysayers wrong — hit singles and platinum-plus albums tend to have that effect — and over the course of roughly three years, she's risen from street-DVD sensation to go-to guest star and, finally, to full-fledged pop sensation — and the Femme Fatale tour is proof.

So, as she prepares to head out on the road with Britney, let's take a look back at that transformation. Here are Nicki Minaj's top pop moments.

Mariah Carey's "Up Out My Face" video shoot, February 8, 2010: Nicki took her first step toward pop success when she filmed a video for the "Face" remix with Carey, an artist who knows a thing or two (hundred million) about that very topic. Other high-profile cameos would follow — most notably, her turn in Usher's "Lil Freak" video — but the march to the mainstream began with this candy-coated clip.

MTV Video Music Awards Pre-Show performance, September 12, 2010: Minaj chose an appropriately huge stage on which to make her solo TV debut — the 2010 VMA Pre-Show — and she made the most of it, dressing like a DayGlo cosmonaut (with a pink beehive) and teaming with the Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am for a delightfully over-the-top take on "Check It Out." With her proper first album less than two months away, the VMAs served not only as a launching pad, but as a warning that big things were on the horizon.

Pink Friday debuts at #2, December 1, 2010: She couldn't quite make it to #1 (at least not yet) — after all, she had Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy to contend with — but Minaj's runner-up bow wasn't a failure by any stretch. With sales of more than 375,000, Pink Friday posted the highest first-week numbers of any female MC since Lauryn Hill's classic The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill all the way back in 1998.

"Moment 4 Life" video premiere, January 27, 2011: With Pink Friday still riding high on the charts, Minaj gave it a charge with the premiere of her biggest, poppiest video to date: "Moment 4 Life," a gilded, glamorous fairy tale brought to life. Co-starring her Twitter beau Drake (and, of course, Minaj herself as a fairy godmother), it's pure pop bliss in every sense of the word. Not surprisingly, the song is her highest-charting top 40 track to date.

"Saturday Night Live" performance, January 30, 2011": As a New York native, Minaj called her "SNL" performance "monumental." As an artist making that final push toward crossover success, the gig was equally important. Not only did she wow audiences with her onstage actions, but her cameos in a pair of sketches — most notably, Digital Short "The Creep" with the Lonely Island — proved that she could provide the laughs too.

Pink Friday Finally Reaches #1, February 9, 2011: Building off that "SNL" success, in February — more than three months after it was first released — Pink Friday finally made it to #1 on the Billboard albums chart, and, in the process, cemented Minaj's status as a star with staying power. Up until landing the Britney tour, this remained Nicki's poppiest moment to date — though who knows what will happen when she hits the road with Ms. Spears?

Foo Fighters Remain 'Badass' Making <i>Wasting Light,</i> PJs And All

Band's raw new album — recorded in Dave Grohl's garage — is in stores now.

By now, you probably know all about how the Foo Fighters' decided to make their brand-new Wasting Light album, in stores Tuesday (April 12), but you might not know why. After all, it's not every day that a globally famous rock band decides to ditch the comforts of the studio for a cramped garage and trade in computers for a reel-to-reel tape machine. But, as Foos frontman Dave Grohl explained to MTV News, that was precisely the reason they did it. After all, the Foo Fighters aren't your average globally famous rock band.

"There's some sort of nobility in being that band that can sell out a stadium, and then you make your record in a garage — like, to me, that's badass — and to tape," he said. "Because I'm sure most people would go and get the newest stuff and work in the nicest studio and spend a trillion dollars and just, like, try to make these computer hits. I like that we're a band that, when we play live, we don't have, like, computers and stuff behind us making half of what you're hearing. And you know what? Sometimes we suck. Sometimes it sounds like, 'Oh, wow, that guy's not singing in key,' or, 'Whoa, that guitar's out of tune.' And I like that, because to me, that's rock and roll."

That rough-around-the-edges spirit can be felt coursing throughout much of Wasting Light, the Foos' rawest album to date. From knotty first single "Rope" and the neck-snapping pace of "White Limo" to the aching "I Should Have Known," it's an album that lets everything bleed — much to the dismay of the team of engineers brought in to helm the production.

"It was my idea to do it to tape, which nobody does it to tape anymore, everyone uses computers, and computers are rad and whatever, but tape, you have to actually play, and you have to be good. You can try to make it sound as good as it can, but at the end of the day, you get what you get on tape, that's it," Grohl said. "When I first brought it up, I said, 'Hey, I want to do this to tape,' and everybody was like, 'Well, can you do that?' and I was like, 'Yeah, that's the way we used to do it,' and Butch [Vig], the producer, he produced Nevermind, like, 20 years ago, and that was tape. ...

"But the first song we recorded, they were editing the tape, and as they wound it back, the tape just fell apart," he continued. "And everyone was like, 'Oh, we can't use tape, we've got to go to computers.' And I basically said, 'If I see one computer in my house, you're fired.' Why go 99.9 percent of the way? If we're going to do it, let's go all the way."

Then again, Grohl will be the first to admit that, despite all the noble aspirations, there was another, deeply selfish reason he decided to record the album in his garage — one that had everything to do with his own comfort.

"The making of this album was kind of the most fun we've ever had making a record, because it was so laid-back," he smiled. "I wish every album was like this, where I didn't even have to get out of my pajamas. Dude, it was in my house. ... I liked doing it this way. Let's leave it at that."

Despite maintaining a low profile lately, Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy is still hard at work. On Tuesday (April 12), the Snowman released "Ballin'," featuring Lil Wayne, the latest single from his repeatedly delayed fourth album TM 103.

On Monday, Jeezy released a preview video that showed him in the studio working on the Lil Lody-produced track. The rapper is seen mixing the song while it plays in the background of the minute-long clip, which announced at the end that the full song would be available Monday at 1:03 p.m.

"Ballin' " arrived as promised, available for download via Jeezy's USDA2Day.com website. "Still ballin' like a mother----er, tell 'em that/ Three platinum chains to match my platinum plaques," Jeezy raps over the rugged, bass-heavy beat at the start of the second verse. Weezy closes the song out with his third verse.

Last year, Jeezy released "Lose My Mind," featuring Plies, which was supposed to be the lead single from TM 103, the follow-up album to 2008's The Recession. Another pair of singles — "All White Everything," featuring Yo Gotti, and "Jizzle," featuring Lil Jon — were also released, but the announced September 28 due date for the album came and went with no new record in stores or iTunes.

"It took me damn near a year and some change to make this album," Jeezy told MTV News. "Me and Shawty Redd went back to the ... basics. We got in this n---a basement, I moved in with that n---a for three months to finish this album," Jeezy said. "No nothing, no clubbing. Just straight grinding, all day and all night."

Besides getting his album ready for release, this past weekend Jeezy officially announced the signing of Gary, Indiana, rapper Freddie Gibbs to his CTE label.

Justin Timberlake, Drake Support 'Real Men' Campaign

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher's foundation against child sex slavery also gets help from Sean Penn and Bradley Cooper.

Some of the biggest men in entertainment are flaunting their acting chops for a good reason. In partnership with Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher's Real Men Don't Buy Girls campaign, Justin Timberlake, Drake and a string of other men have come together to film a series of comical spots to promote the movement's message against child sex slavery.

Kutcher took to Hope140.org to guest blog about the campaign, explaining why he and Moore chose to mix comedy with the issue's serious undertones.

"We want to engage people, educate them, get them thinking and talking about it, in order to raise awareness and ultimately end child sex slavery," the actor wrote. "We came up with the concept of the 'Real Men Don't Buy Girls' campaign, which aims to engage people, specifically men, in the issue. To do so, we filmed short, funny videos about things 'Real Men' do, starring high-profile influential men and women."

In short, Kutcher explained that the message of the video campaign is that real men "do a lot of silly, even foolish things," but they don't buy children for sex. "That's not funny, and Real Men don't do it," he added.

In Timberlake's minute-long spot, the singer-turned-actor hums to himself as he lathers his face with shaving cream. However, instead of using a razor to remove his 5-o'clock shadow, the newly single star cranks a chainsaw before a voiceover says: "Real men prefer a close shave."

Eva Longoria concludes the spot with a framed photo of Timberlake alongside fellow hall of fame "real men." Standing inside a log cabin, the actress offers another addition to the club: "Perez Hilton is a real man. Are you?" she asks.

Drake presents another strangely comical message in his spot. As he walks down a city street, the Young Money MC puts a cell phone conversation on hold when he sees a beckoning silver robot on a side street. The duo gaze into one another's eyes before Drake sucker punches the android and walks away. "Real men are distrustful of robots," says the voiceover.

Other "real men" participating in the campaign spots include Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper, Jamie Foxx and Jason Mraz, with similar video formats and the same signature closing tagline: "Real men don't buy girls."

Jay-Z And Gwyneth Paltrow Swap Interviews

Pair post Q&As with one another on their respective websites.

Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Grammy-winning rapper Jay-Z come from different worlds, but that didn't stop them from becoming BFFs. The pair have performed together — as have Jay-Z and Gwyneth's husband, Chris Martin — in the past. And on Tuesday (April 12), the two buddies traded questions with each other on their respective websites. Hova interviewed Paltrow on his recently debuted lifestyle site Life + Times (LifeandTimes.com), and Paltrow interviewed Hova for the GOOP.com online newsletter she launched in 2008.

The Q&A on Jay-Z's site is titled "Straight Outta Compton?" It turns out the actress with the singing chops got turned on to N.W.A. in Los Angeles while she was still in high school. "I first was exposed to hip-hop when I was about 16 (1988) by some boys who went to college," Paltrow said. "The Beastie Boys were sort of the way in for us preppie kids. We were into Public Enemy, Run-DMC and LL Cool J. But then I went to L.A. the summer between my junior and senior years of high school and I discovered N.W.A., which became my obsession. I was fascinated by lyrics as rhythm and how Dre had a such different cadence and perspective from say, Eazy-E, who I thought was one of the most ironic and brilliant voices hip-hop has ever had."

While Jay-Z's line of questions aimed to discover the root of Paltrow's musical tastes and affection for hip-hop music (she prefers the Notorious B.I.G. over Tupac Shakur), the actress' inquiries for the rapper focused on his new website and his personal inspirations (Jean-Michel Basquiat, Muhammad Ali and Mario Batali among them). But any sense of journalistic impartiality went out the window with her last question: "You are the coolest man on Earth, how the f did you get like that?"

To this Hov answered, "I'm around great women, starting with my mom. Women keep men cool. The hotter the chick, the cooler the guy ... that sounds like a really bad rap line!"

Don't Sleep: Other Notables

Mixtape: The S.O.U.L. Tape

Starring: Fabolous

Essential Info: Fabolous has always had a knack for boosting R&B songs with his slick verses. Check the discography: Jamie Foxx's "She Got Her Own," Lil Mo's "Superwoman, Part II," Trey Songz's "Say Aah" — the list goes on. So the Bed-Stuy rapper new mixtape inspired by soul music — The S.O.U.L. Tape — is long overdue.

Fab revealed the mixtape's title and cover art on Monday. According to one of his Twitter posts, The S.O.U.L. Tape will be out April 21,

Fabolous' last mixtape was 2010's There Is No Competition 2, which spawned his Ryan Leslie-produced hit "You Be Killin' Em." The S.O.U.L. Tape was originally slated for a February release, and its title was chosen via a makeshift Twitter poll. "I did the poll to get people interactive with it and see what names they would come up with," Fab told XXLMag.com in late January. "I'm doing it over all old soul-sampled beats, so I wanted to keep the word 'soul' within the title. A lot of people picked Soul Survivor or really attached it to There Is No Competition because they are already familiar with that and that's one of the mixtape monikers for me. But I wanted to keep it separate from There Is No Competition, even though that name is winning [in the poll]. I might actually go with the third option which is The S.O.U.L. Tape."

During NBA All-Star Weekend, Ne-Yo told MTV News that he and Fabolous were working on a joint hip-hop and R&B project in the mold of R. Kelly's and Jay-Z's Best of Both Worlds album.

Fabolous' next proper album, Loso's Way 2, is due later this year.

Mixtape: Benjamin Flocka

Starring: Waka Flocka Flame with DJ Love Dinero and DJ Teknik

The Atlanta trap rapper drops a mixtape jam-packed with local rap clientele (Tity Boi, Rocko), his Brick Squad Monopoly team (Wooh Da Kid, Frenchie, YG Hootie, P Smurf and Bo Deal) and, of course, Gucci. After weeks of speculation, Nicki Minaj has at last been confirmed as the replacement for Enrique Iglesias on Britney Spears' upcoming Femme Fatale tour.

The ladies will also be joined by Jessie and the Toy Boys and Nervo on the all-female lineup. "This is the Femme Fatale tour, and I'm thrilled to have the hot Nicki Minaj join me and Jessie and the Toy Boys and Nervo will get everyone on the dance floor," Spears said on her website. "Can't wait to take the Femme Fatales on the road."

Minaj will join Spears after she wraps up touring with Lil Wayne on his I Am Still Music tour, which finishes up May 1 in New Jersey. Last week, Minaj told to MTV News that she was in talks to join the tour, after rumors began swirling that the sassy Queens MC would be hitting the road with the veteran pop superstar.

The tour kicks off on June 16 in Sacramento, California, and will run for 26 dates through North America, winding up on August 13 in Toronto. Select tickets go on sale on April 30.

Spears manager Larry Rudolph, told MTV News that Britney's tour will have the post-apocalyptic vibe that's been present in her recent live sets and the video for "Till the World Ends."

"The way we come up with a concept for a show like this is we sit with Britney, she talks to us about what she's interested in and what excites her," Rudolph explained. "We start with the songs on the album; we start with coming up with general, broad concepts. She tells us what interests her and excites her, and from there, we have [the input of music tour director] Jamie King and [choreographer] Brian Friedman."

'Superman' Star Michael Shannon Calls Zod Casting 'Ridiculous'

'It just came out of nowhere,' actor said of getting the role.
By Eric Ditzian

When we met Henry Cavill at WonderCon recently, the actor couldn't quite wrap his head around the idea, even months after being tapped for the job, that he'll be donning Superman's cape and becoming the Man of Steel for a new generation.

Michael Shannon, by contrast, was only officially announced as General Zod — the villainous alien who'll face off against Superman in Warner Bros.' "Man of Steel" — on Sunday.

Yet he too is having a hard time comprehending the fact that he's now a part of the franchise.

"This 'Superman' thing is ridiculous. It just came out of nowhere," Shannon said in his first public comments about the casting, delivered during an appearance at RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. "I was talking to my agent ... she's like, 'How about 'Superman'? I'm like, 'What?' The idea that I would ever be in 'Superman'! I'm like, 'Are you serious?' "

It was true: Director Zack Snyder wanted Shannon, who nabbed an Oscar nod for "Revolutionary Road" but is perhaps best known for his turn on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," for the role of Zod (a part previously played by Terence Stamp in "Superman" and "Superman II"). So Shannon headed out to meet Snyder.

"[H]e's seriously sitting there and he's telling me, 'You can't read the script, so I'm just gonna tell you what happens.' And he spent a half hour telling me every scene in this movie," Shannon said, adding with a laugh, "he's at his home in Pasadena and I'm looking out — there's the Rose Bowl, there's little hummingbirds flying around. I'm like, 'I'm on acid!' "

Snyder eventually decided Shannon was the right guy for the part, but the director had to convince the higher-ups at WB. They ended up bringing him in to read with Cavill. "They said, 'You have to come back because we want to see if you and Superman have chemistry,' " Shannon explained.

A month after that first meeting, Shannon said, the part was his. And what does he think of Cavill as Superman? "I think this guy will be all right," Shannon said.

Check out everything we've got on "Superman: Man of Steel."
