Danity Kane Special: Aubrey Is Shy, Aundrea Almost Doesn't Pass Audition

When four out of the five girls of Danity Kane reunited during the season-three finale of "Making The Band," they weren't really ready to place blame on any one person or situation for what caused the demise of the group.

But a new special, "Making the Band: The Rise and Fall of Danity Kane," airing Thursday (April 30) at 9 p.m. ET, examines the good and the bad that went on in the ladies' world.

"It's hidden scenes and new information revealed of the backstage struggles of Danity Kane," Perry Dance, a producer on the show, told MTV News. "The new scenes in it allow you to better see how things were happening within the group ... now that you know where they ended up, you can find clues and secrets."

The show examines the group from "creation to demise" and features never-before-seen audition footage. Previously only Aubrey O'Day's audition was aired, but now fans can see how Aundrea Fimbres, Shannon Bex, D. Woods and Dawn Richard ended up in Danity Kane.

The girls, who haven't been filmed together since October, "ride a wave during their entire career," Dance said, adding that the special has "new footage and new information. It tracks them in good and bad. It's not a clip show, since it features a lot of unseen moments, but any clips are chosen to explain why they ended up where they ended up."

In addition to the audition footage, fans will also get to see an early fight between Aubrey and Diddy that "seemed minor, but led to bigger things," as well as a scene in season two where Aundrea tries to convince Aubrey not to do a Blender magazine photo shoot. "Aubrey was still shy," Dance explained.

"You get to see that Aundrea almost didn't make it into the group," he added. "And that Melissa Smith was going to be the fifth member, not Aundrea."

Chris Brown's Attorney Wants Case Dismissed

Lawyer says leaks of Rihanna photo and other evidence should be basis for dismissal.

Mark Geragos, the attorney representing Chris Brown in his felony assault case, told reporters outside of a Los Angeles courthouse on Wednesday morning (April 29) that he wants the case dismissed entirely, due to high-level leaks in the investigation.

"Leaks can form the basis for a motion to dismiss the case in regard to outrageous governmental misconduct," Geragos said, according to E! News.

The "leaks" the lawyer was referring to include the widely circulated police photo of Rihanna that showed the starlet badly bruised and suffering from a number of scratches, according to RadarOnline.com. The site also reported that Geragos will file a motion regarding the photo, as well as "several other incidents of leaks about the case." When the photo first appeared on TMZ in February, the Los Angeles Police Department announced it would conduct an investigation into the leak, but no findings in the matter have been announced as of press time.

Geragos appeared in court without Brown and, as expected, requested additional discovery time. The attorney claimed that evidence turned over by the LAPD still had not been presented to him, according to OK! magazine. Without much objection from prosecutors, the judge scheduled a new hearing for May 28.

The stipulated date could help speed up a possible plea-deal negation. Brown's attorney and the L.A. County District Attorney's office have reportedly been working on striking a deal.

The judge also ruled to release Rihanna's jewelry on Wednesday. The female singer's attorney had requested the borrowed items, reportedly worth up to $1.4 million, that she had been wearing on the night of the incident be returned from police custody. Police will take photos of the jewelry and use the images should the evidence be needed in court.

No Doubt 'Giddy' About Summer Tour, New Record

No Doubt have been off the road for nearly five years now. That's all about to change.

On Saturday, Gwen and the guys will take the stage at the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, then on Sunday, they'll close out the Bamboozle Festival at the Meadowlands. Both dates will serve as tune-ups for a massive summer tour with Paramore, their first full-scale jaunt since 2004.

So, yes — this is a fairly huge deal. But unlike any of the innumerable reunited bands gearing up to hit the road, No Doubt aren't looking at their tour as a way to make tons of cash. Rather, they're using it to kick-start the creative process for a brand-new album, reportedly due in 2010.

"We're calling it 'the procrastination tour' ... well, I am, at least. I'm the biggest procrastinator," Gwen Stefani laughed. "It's not their fault, it's my fault, because I had this whole game plan: 'OK, I'm gonna go on tour with my last record, I'm gonna come home, I'm gonna get pregnant, I'm gonna have a baby, but while I'm pregnant, I'm gonna make the No Doubt record.' That was, like, the plan, but it all didn't work.

"Like, we got a lot of hang-out time and we talked and had so much fun together, but we didn't actually make too much music," she continued. "Maybe around 4:45 to 5 o'clock we'd actually play the instruments and then we'd all have dinner. There was a lot of eating going on."

So, in order to break the deadlock, they all decided to hit the road. And from the minute they began lining up summer tour dates, the floodgates opened.

"You know, it all made sense. We were in the studio, trying to write [songs for the new No Doubt record]. Things weren't coming. Gwen was feeling like she couldn't find the place where she wanted to start the writing process. I think she always goes through this and I think we, uh, we just need to find ourselves. We just need to get out on the road," bassist Tony Kanal said. "And the four of us looked at each other and said, 'It's time to play,' and as soon as we said that, the pressure was lifted ... we got really excited. It was like four adults became four little kids again. We're giddy about it."

The No Doubt/ Paramore tour kicks off May 19 in Fresno, California. But you don't have to wait that long for your ND fix. We'll be bringing you more of our chat with the band over the coming days, right here on MTVNews.com.

Newlyweds Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt may have picked the most unfortunate time to head down to Cabo in and shoot the video for Heidi's new single, "Blackout," in Mexico — considering the country is battling a swine-flu epidemic.

But leave it to Heidi and Spencer to take a bad situation and make the most of it. "We're definitely wearing the face masks everywhere we go," Spencer told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show Tuesday. "We're not playing. I'm not trying to get pig flu! We're in isolation. We're in, like, full hiding."

"We're not on our honeymoon technically yet. This is a music-video shoot we're doing this weekend," Heidi added. "The honeymoon's coming in a couple weeks."

The song, which was written by Cathy Dennis (who co-wrote katy Perry's hit "I Kissed a Girl") will be featured on Heidi's still-untitled forthcoming album. "I've never had an album," Heidi told MTV News. "This is my first album. I've wanted to do music since I could talk. I used to do plays and singing and voice lessons and practice Britney routines when I was, like, 12. This is the biggest dream of my life."

Heidi also worked with Dennis on "Look How I'm Doin'," and she describes the songwriter as a "genius." "I just love making fun music, like Lil Wayne," she said. "He'll do a rock song, and then he'll do a rap song. I get to choose my own songs. It's something I love doing. I'm having so much fun doing it, and it's not too much pressure. It's more on my own."

He's put out three albums, and all three have gone #1: The Miami native's Deeper Than Rap hit the top spot on the Billboard albums chart Wednesday (April 29). The MC told MTV News that despite all the controversy surrounding him over the past year, he never doubted he'd be successful, especially since he calls the project the album of his career.

"I knew all the time," he said. "You gotta really know somebody's integrity. You gotta know if you're dealing with a champion or not. When I say 'Bawse,' I put that infamous on it because I mean it. If I'm not a boss, I believe I am. I know where I came from and what I accomplished. In my book, I'm certified. That's what I love about the hip-hop game: It's competitive. I love when you stack the chips against me, 'cause when I hit those numbers, those odds are gonna be in my favor, so we gotta triple up."

Def Jam South head and longtime Ross associate DJ Khaled actually congratulated Ross on his #1 last week, before the results were in. "I'd like to congratulate Rick Ross in advance for the #1 album in the country," he told MTV News. "I don't need to know what he sold, I don't need the charts, I know it's the #1 album in the country! ... The streets did it! Congratulations, Rick Ross!"

Khaled also spilled the beans that his Miami friend is already working on Deeper Than Rap's follow-up. "I'm probably not supposed to tell you," Khaled joked while on the set of Ace Hood's "Overtime" video. Khaled worked closely with Ross on Deeper Than Rap, serving as the project's A&R exec, and hinted that fans can expect more of the same from Ross' next opus.

It probably comes as no surprise to Twilighters everywhere that the movie's stars, Robert Pattinsonand Kristen Stewart, made People's annual 100 Most Beautiful List.

"I don't get it," Pattinson said about his newly minted status as a heartthrob. "It's funny, you look the same for years, and no one ever mentions it. Then suddenly it's a big deal."

Pattinson and Stewart weren't the only teen idols who made the list, which also includes Nick and Joe Jonas, Channing Tatum and "17 Again" star Zac Efron, who revealed his secret to staying beautiful: "Backpacking, hiking, surfing, swimming, playing tennis — things that get you active and are also fun."

This year's cover girl is cancer survivor Christina Applegate, and pop star Christina Aguilera heads up the "Beauty After Baby" category. Aguilera described how her son, Max, changed her for the better. "I'm a total vampire — but Max makes me go out into the sun or to the pool in the middle of the day. He brings out a different side of me that I'm really starting to enjoy."

Starlets Frieda Pinto, Demi Lovato, Emma Roberts, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift also made the list. "It's important to be comfortable with who you are and go natural once in a while," Swift said about her style.

"Gossip Girl" star Taylor Momsen, who is also in the rock band the Pretty Reckless, found her way onto the list, but she doesn't get why. "I have a really strange body," she said. "I'm tall, but I'm all legs, like three-fourths of my body."

Other Beautiful People of 2009 include Barack and Michelle Obama, Keke Palmer, Hugh Jackman, Angelina Jolie, Dev Patel, Tina Fey, Rashida Jones and the ladies of "90210."

Maxwell Shows 'Three Sides Of My Crazy Personality' With LP Trilogy

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 05:16 AM PDT

Singer calls 'Pretty Wings,' the first single from Black, 'a bittersweet love song.'
By Shaheem Reid

Maxwell
Photo: MTV News

NEW YORK — You think it's been a long time since Eminem dropped an album? Shoot, the last time Maxwell put out an LP, Kanye West wasn't even that well known as a producer, let alone a rapper. 50 Cent was an unsigned artist just heating up the streets with mixtapes. T.I. was just known in the trap.

Now was released eight years ago. That was then.

Today, Maxwell seems so relaxed and even more humble than the admittedly shy singer (shy offstage, that is) has ever been. He's sorry if he disappointed fans who have been waiting almost a decade for one of the most soulful and popular singers of the '90s to put out new material. Max, who was 23 when he introduced the world to his classic debut Urban Hang Suite in 1996, says his time off was spent living and enjoying life.

On Tuesday night at the Sony building, Maxwell reintroduced himself. He's releasing three albums over three years called Black, Summer's and Night. Don't be confused: It's a trilogy.

"Three sides of my crazy personality," Maxwell explained of the albums. "Black is dark. Summer's is the lighter side. That album is more of a gospel side — not in the traditional sense, but more like Deepak Chopra meets that minister or that pastor down in the South somewhere. The Night album is ... the ultimate love record.

"I always wanted to do this," he continued. "This was a plan for about six years, and we worked all those songs out. I'm excited to see how people take each record and how they experience each record."

The first single from Black is "Pretty Wings," which Max described as "a bittersweet love song about meeting the right girl at the wrong time."

So what are some of the other songs like? "We got 'Bad Habits,' which is about being addicted to a girl, being addicted to a relationship that's not good for you. But it feels so good that it can't be wrong.

"It's the paradox, the dichotomy that propels me," he said about his inspiration. "I love the polar-opposite things. We live that every day. The double standards. We have that in our lives every day. One thing's good for one but not good for the other. Those are the things that inspire me and the records. At the same time, I don't like to tell people what it all means. I want you to find your own meaning in what I do. It makes it more special to me when I know that. For the many letters I've gotten, people telling me, 'Your song was at my wedding.' It doesn't matter what I thought at the point [of writing the song]. At that point, your bride was walking down the aisle, and I was singing. That, to me, is like, 'Wow.' "

Black is due in July, while Summer's and Night are scheduled for release in 2010 and 2011, respectively.

Scott Storch Talks About How Cocaine 'Took Control' Of His Life

'It went to my head, I guess. I had to come back to earth,' producer says of his past success.
By Shaheem Reid

"I had my problem with cocaine. I can only urge the youth that there's no way to control that thing," Scott Storch told MTV News. Storch, one of the great producers of the last decade, has been relatively quiet the past couple of years battling drug addiction. He lost friends, business deals and inspiration to make tracks — he alienated some loved ones and, when he hit rock bottom, couldn't face himself in the mirror.

"I think I had more self-control than a lot of people, and it took control of me," Storch said about his struggle with drugs. "I didn't even see it happening ... just going further out there. Then you look in the mirror one day and realize, 'Wow, I don't like what I see.' I knew I had to do something about it."

It took Scott almost three years, but he eventually sought help and is now in recovery working with counselors. He's even back in the studio working on tracks — the more work equals fewer distractions.

"I had a long run for, like, probably 10 years with no vacation," he explained. "I never went out. I was not the guy at the club. I was almost scared of going to the club. All of a sudden, I found myself working with certain artists from L.A. and hanging out in L.A. and being introduced to a whole new lifestyle ... and getting in trouble with them.

"It wasn't like an escape for me. It was more like I was having so much fun and, for the first time being let out of the studio, it was like the mad scientist on the loose," he continued. "All of a sudden, pictures were snapping and I was famous and it went to my head, I guess. I had to come back to earth."

His fall back to earth was a severe crash — he lost over $30 million in a matter of months, spending excessively on drugs, trips and other big-ticket items.

"We all think we're not going to get that point," he said about losing control. "It sneaks up on you real fast. ... You don't think it's affecting you, but it does. People probably didn't enjoy talking to me when I was high on cocaine, 'cause I had a friend of mine saying [recently], 'This is the first time I talked to you ever. You're focused on the conversation; you're focused on everything you do. You're more methodical with your thinking.' It's serious."

Danny Gokey Finds His Swagger On 'American Idol' Rat Pack Night

Adam Lambert makes a memorable entrance; Allison Iraheta debuts a softer side.

While the "American Idol" finalists took last week's disco theme as an opportunity to rearrange dance tunes and make them their own, Tuesday night's Rat Pack theme was all about keeping it classic.

But who would help them with their standards? As Kris Allen astutely pointed out, "The theme is Rat Pack, and all those people are ... dead." The show called on Oscar-winning actor and current chart-topper Jamie Foxx for the job. (Relive Tuesday night's show in detail with Jim Cantiello's "American Idol" live blog at the MTV Newsroom.)

On top of having the teen-girl market cornered, Kris also apparently has a huge fan in Foxx, who said Allen is a "dude I'll do a record with." For "The Way You Look Tonight," Kris was accompanied by horns, piano and screaming girls, and he threw in a few more vocal acrobatics than we're used to hearing from him. (See what fans in Kris Allen's hometown had to say about Tuesday's performance.)

For the most part, the judges were as impressed with Allen as the ladies in the audience were. Randy Jackson called it Kris' "best performance to date" and complimented the singer on his "R&B stylings" and "mad nice vocals." Kara DioGuardi said Kris "set the technical standard so incredibly high for this evening" and called him "a dark horse in this competition." (Where have we heard that before?) Paula Abdul said Kris had gone "from adorable boy next door to sophisticated gentleman." Simon Cowell, however, called Allen's performance "a little bit wet" and compared him to a "well-trained spaniel" before telling him he doesn't think he can win the competition.

Allison Iraheta started out in the hot seat with Ryan Seacrest to talk about celebrating her 17th birthday earlier in the week, and Foxx immediately took note that the teen was "leaps and bounds ahead of her time." The guest mentor also suggested that Allison think of her family when singing "Someone to Watch Over Me," because she's "too young to have a boyfriend."

Allison debuted a much more elegant look this week — wearing her hair in soft waves to complement her spaghetti-strap, sparkly gown — and the look matched her tender take on the standard. Randy said she looked like Brittany Murphy and sang like Pink, while Kara offered, "If that doesn't land you in the finals, I don't know what will." Paula was a fan of the song's "innocent sensibility that was both alluring and very tender." But after the three other judges' praise, Simon told Allison she wasn't confident enough and was "overshadowed" by some of the other personalities in the competition.

Matt Giraud was up next, and he really seemed to take Foxx's advice to heart, going with a lower key and less falsetto on "My Funny Valentine." Randy gave Matt props for tackling a hard song, but gave it "a 6 out of 10." Kara said she didn't feel "emotionally connected" to the performance, which seemed to surprise Matt.

The tide turned for Giraud with the next two judges. "By lowering the key, we got to hear a different side of Matt," Paula raved. Simon also offered high praise, calling the performance "the only believable, authentic song I've heard tonight" and comparing Matt's phrasing to Nat King Cole's.

Danny Gokey got an unusual singing lesson from Foxx, with the Oscar winner invading Gokey's personal space to get some extra emotion out of him for "Come Rain or Come Shine." The exercise seemed to work: Danny offered up bluesy, stripped-down verses leading to a bombastic finish that had the crowd going wild.

Randy felt that Danny found his niche with standards, and Kara agreed, saying he had "Rat Pack swagger." Paula offered one word, "stellar," and said Danny "can see the finish line." Simon praised Foxx for bringing out the best he's heard from Gokey in weeks.

Foxx promised that Adam Lambert was "gonna knock everybody's head off" with his show-closer, "Feeling Good." His entrance alone probably accomplished that, with Adam skulking down pink-lit stairs wearing a shiny, white suit. The whole thing was "a little too Broadway" for Randy, but that's where the negativity ended.

Kara offered up a barrage of adjectives to describe the performance — confusing, shocking, way over-the-top, sleazy — and made sure to add, "In a good way." Paula likened it to "watching the Olympics, and you're our Michael Phelps." Simon was happy that Adam seemed to care genuinely about winning "Idol." He also said Lambert made the best entrance they'd had all season.

Wednesday night's (April 29) results show will feature performances by season-five "American Idol" champ Taylor Hicks, Natalie Cole and Jamie Foxx.

Aubrey O'Day Dishes About Her New TV Show

On Wednesday (April 29), gossip blogs, including PerezHilton.com, reported that Aubrey O'Day would be taking over the "Shot at Love" dating-show franchise. But O'Day exclusively confirmed to MTV News that she is getting a show, it just has nothing to do with finding love.

"That sounds fun, right?" she joked. "There was originally some talk about me coming on 'A Shot at Love.' They were excited about me keeping with the network, and they thought I would be great for it since I'm America's favorite bisexual."

O'Day, who most recently reunited for an evening with her former Danity Kane members during Thursday's "Making the Band 4" season-three finale, didn't want to go down that path with her career. "I didn't feel it was the right fit for me, 'cause I'm an artist first. Although I have fun at events and stuff, it's not really at all who I am as an artist."

So what will O'Day's show be about? The singer says it will focus on her path to find career happiness. "I am doing my own reality show, and I'm co-executive-producing my own show," she said. "It's a docu-soap about me taking the stage again and of my own life."

O'Day is looking forward to hitting the small screen again but couldn't reveal too much about when and where we'll be seeing her. "The show is going to be amazing. The [stage] show they've created is unbelievable. I'm going to be singing, dancing and acting ... much different than [my time on Broadway in] 'Hairspray.' "

Chris Brown To Appear In Court Today

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 03:53 AM PDT

'The deadlines will help get something done or prepare things to move forward,' legal expert says of singer's hearing.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Earlier this month, Chris Brown pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from his February altercation with Rihanna on the eve of the Grammys. Brown is now due back in court on Wednesday (April 29) to make his first appearance since entering his plea. So what can the singer expect as he once again enters Judge Patricia Schnegg's chambers?

Well, it depends on a number of factors — both sides in the case were reportedly working furiously to negotiate a plea deal, and a few of those factors favored a deal being struck, legal experts have said.

For example, Chris Brown is a first-time offender with no criminal history. Rihanna, it appears, doesn't have much interest in testifying in the case — her lawyer recently said that his client would like to reach a resolution as soon as possible. And both stars could do without additional damaging information about the night in question being made public.

On Wednesday, Brown will appear in Los Angeles County Criminal Court for a status conference and there's a remote chance his attorney, Mark Geragos, will announce that a plea deal has finally been reached.

Peter T. Haven, a legal expert based in California, explained that most likely Geragos will ask for additional discovery time. Earlier this month, Brown's legal team made a similar request, which in turn allowed them to see what evidence the prosecution held — a court formality. This time, the Brown camp will have to update the judge on their findings and may request more time to seek further evidence on their own.

Haven, who worked on O.J. Simpson's controversial book "If I Did It," said the prosecution may argue against the motion which, if successful, could see the judge set a preliminary hearing in the near future — as early as in 90 days, according to Haven.

"During the preliminary, which is significant, the prosecution puts the case in front of the judge to convince the judge that they have sufficient evidence to go forward with a criminal prosecution," Haven told MTV News. "The defense then tries to kill the case. [But] if there's enough evidence, the prosecution could then get a trial date."

If the case goes to trial, Brown could face a maximum of four years and eight months in prison if he's found guilty, according to an L.A. County District Attorney spokesman. Brown is battling felony charges of assault and making criminal threats.

What may prove to be a sticking point in negotiations moving forward is the matter of Rihanna's jewelry. The singer recently requested through her attorney that the jewelry she wore the night she and Brown argued be returned to her. The items are reportedly worth up to $1.4 million, and the jeweler who loaned the Barbados native the goods is requesting she either return or pay for them. According to TMZ.com, sources claim the prosecution is holding the jewelry as a means of leverage against the singer should they require her to testify. Additional sources told the celebrity site the claims are not true and that the district attorney and Brown's team will simply use photos of the jewelry in case, should they need to. If that's the case, Rihanna — who is not required to appear in court — may receive word on Wednesday that her jewelry will be returned.

Ultimately, on Wednesday, if the judge rules in favor of a preliminary hearing or an additional 30 days for further discovery, Haven said the timetables will establish dates for each side to work with if they chose to strike a deal.

"The deadlines will help get something done or prepare things to move forward," Haven said. "These are target dates that drive deals to be done."

Kris Allen's Hometown Packs Arena To Watch 'American Idol'

Conway, Arkansas, fans get together for some speed-dialing and repeat viewings of Kris' performance.

CONWAY, Arkansas — He might have referred to Kris Allen's performance of "The Way You Look Tonight" as inexplicably "wet," but Simon Cowell got a rousing ovation when his name was announced Tuesday night (April 28) inside the Farris Center on the campus of University of Central Arkansas as Conway gathered to watch "American Idol" en masse. It was all the love Cowell would get, though.

And it was nothing compared to the deafening screams every time hometown hero Allen was shown on the giant inflatable megascreen set up in the university's arena to view Tuesday night's Rat Pack-themed show. The home side of the bleachers were packed with nearly 2,000 Conway faithful, many of them waving the one-page insert from that day's local paper hyping the 23-year-old native son, while others held up homemade signs professing their love for the young man who might want to consider a run for mayor if this whole music thing doesn't work out.

Commercial breaks were filled with the sound of Allen's performances of "Falling Slowly" and "Ain't No Sunshine," but when he finally took the stage to sing "The Way You Look," the room rocked as if the Jonas Brothers had just walked onstage with the cast of "Twilight," carrying Miley Cyrus on their shoulders (seriously, it was really loud). With every breath and every pause Allen took during his buttery, languid rendition of the standard, the crowd yelped anew, providing proof why so many of Allen's friends said earlier in the day that they would have loved to join the crowd but simply couldn't take the constant distraction.

Immediately after the performance, one of the local organizers of the event encouraged everyone in the room to program Allen's two numbers into their phones right there. "You heard what Simon said!" she yelled, referring to the cryptic "wet" comment. "We need to do it! . Seriously, Simon, what was he thinking?" And though the crowd sat politely as the rest of the contestants performed, when favorite Adam Lambert came onstage there was a low murmur of boos for the one contestant the crowd seemed to think could spoil their shot at collective fame.

Along the far wall, a long line of people waited their turn to send personal video messages to Allen, and by the end of the hour, the series of nine long tables on the other end of the arena began to fill up as Allen acolytes readied to wear their fingers out speed-dialing for the singer. Seconds after the show ended, the house lights came on and the cell phones lit up, with most fans double-fisting it and excitedly yelling out their totals. "I've already got 40 votes in!" shrieked one woman barely 10 minutes into voting.

Sarah Mayer, 17, barely looked up from her phone as she admitted that she'd never watched "Idol" before Allen got the town buzzing. "He's amazing," she said. "I couldn't believe how many people came out." Her friend, Lauren Rivers, also 17, said her friends at school were talking about the watch party all week, and in the time she was saying how great it is that the town was supporting Allen so much, she lodged 15 votes. "I think Simon's crazy," she said, blasting away at her phone.

Cale Mills, 25, an old friend of Allen's who actually accompanied him to his "Idol" audition in Louisville last year, stayed late at the event and said the amount of people who hung around to vote was a testament to Allen. "His character is shining through on the show," he said. "And the community is picking up on that. If they didn't think he was talented, they wouldn't be here."

As Allen's performance from Tuesday night unspooled for a third time on the big screen, Mills' words rung true, as all around him, supporters were still working their phones, including some with a cell phone in one hand and a land line up their other ear. "I'm going out next week, so he will make it through," Mills promised with a smile.

Mr Hudson Says Mentor Kanye West 'Met My Music Before He Met Me'

What could the extravagant Louis Vuitton Don have in store for his artist Mr Hudson? The British vocalist said that several months ago, Kanye West came into the studio and told him he had a "gift" for him.

"A new Jesus piece?" Hudson thought. Nope. "A hand-me-down Jaguar?" Nah.

It was a record that had the potential to be a hit. West simply told the engineer in the studio to press play, and out of the speakers came the chorus for a song the two wound up collaborating on: "Supernova."

" 'Supernova,' it's a co-write," Hudson explained, sitting in the Beverly Hills Hotel a few days ago. "I think our head space, we kinda overlapped with similar emotions about things when we were hanging out last summer. I think we both could relate to the lyrics, so we built it together. Kanye brought in the chorus. We brought the verses up together."

Kanye and Hudson were shooting the video for their song, which is the first single from the singer's U.S. debut.

"What's cool is, Kanye met my music before he met me," Hudson said of their relationship. " ... I wouldn't have gone up to Kanye in a club and said, 'Here is my CD, you've gotta listen to it.' That isn't my style. I made my first album in London. It didn't get released in the States, but somehow he got a copy, which meant that when Kanye was in London promoting Graduation, we were introduced briefly. A year later, I was in Paris on holiday. I got a call coming in to the office: 'Here is a contract.' "

Last November, 'Ye told Mixtape Monday that his new signee had the potential to be "bigger" than he is. Hudson appreciated the compliment but said it is a lot of pressure.

"Yeah, it's really annoying, actually," he smiled. "Now I got loads of work to do to try and live up to that."

"Yeah, that was, like, wack," Kanye said of his previous statement.

"I shouldn't have said all that to try and put all that pressure on you," 'Ye continued, talking to Hudson. "That's one of the problems. On one hand, when you sign with an established person, you get all the limelight, the shine. On the other hand, you've got all the pressure. Then you deal with some of the baggage. You buy into some of the fans and you buy into some of the enemies. I think he'll be able to surpass all of that with his talent."

Steve-O 'Grateful' For 'Good Friends' That Helped Him Get Sober

'Maybe this will inspire people to do something and intervene on loved ones,' the 'Jackass' star says of his MTV documentary.

Sometimes your friends kick you in the groin, sometimes they save your life — that's just how the "Jackass" boys roll.

Last March, after Steve-O hit rock bottom during a harrowing drug- and alcohol-fueled binge, Johnny Knoxville and many others in the "Jackass" crew of daredevils staged an intervention for their friend and colleague. Steve-O landed in a psychiatric hospital in Los Angeles. Now, more than a year later, he's sober and set to debut an unsparing documentary about his addiction and recovery, "Steve-O: Demise and Rise," premiering Sunday at 10 p.m. ET.

"They've been there in the good times and the bad," Steve-O said of the "Jackass" guys in a recent interview with MTV News. "When you go through what I've been through, you find out who your friends are. I got some good friends. I'm really grateful."

He can offer such sentiments now, but the experience of being locked up was nothing short of traumatic. "The psychiatric ward was a really creepy place and, hindsight being 20/20, the creepiest thing about it was that I truly belonged there," Steve-O said.

Even now — more than 13 months sober — Steve-O must contend with what he described as "moments of absolute defenselessness" in his quest to stay clean and has had to cut loose people who did not have his best interests in mind. "Anybody that's not supportive of me staying sober obviously has to go," he said. "But on the other hand, there are not really a lot of people who don't want me to stay sober. I was a nightmare."

One person who always will have Steve-O's back is Knoxville. "We were there before he got into show business, before he was on 'Jackass,' and we were there when he completely, absolutely spun out of control and almost lost his life," Knoxville told MTV News.

While Steve-O maintains that "Demise and Rise" is not meant to cast him as a role model, he is hopeful that viewers might benefit from watching his self-destruction and recovery. "People who have loved ones that have really gotten to that point, if this shows an intervention really did a lot to get me on a better track, maybe this will inspire people to do something and intervene on loved ones," he said.

30 Seconds To Mars Try Hard So You Don't Have To

Jared Leto and company are plugging away at an album we might never hear, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Here is one thing you probably do not know about Jared Leto: He is a hugger.

I discovered this on Monday, when I spent the afternoon with 30 Seconds to Mars at Leto's rather amazing home in Los Angeles and was wrapped in his gentle embrace no less than a dozen times. In the upstairs sitting room, down by the pool, in the control room of his studio ... Leto was there for me, waiting with outstretched arms. Seriously, it was like visiting my grandma, if my grandma A) had a decidedly postmodern interior-design scheme and B) were friends with Kanye West.

To say that it was possibly the most surreal afternoon of my entire career would be an understatement of epic proportions. And that was before Leto sat me down, stared at me with those steely blue eyes of his, patted my knee and presented me with a gift: a box of steel-cut oatmeal (since I had joked in a blog post that he was killing us with all the cupcakes he had been sending to the MTV newsroom). Oh, and he filmed the exchange for a movie he's working on and made me sign a release form.

And this brings me to the point of this week's column: Not only is Jared Leto a tireless hugger and a thoughtful gift giver, he is also totally, completely crazy ... in the best way possible.

Because for the past year, despite the specter of a $30 million lawsuit hanging over his head, Leto has been clocking 18-hour days in a bare-bones-yet-strangely-futuristic studio that he and his 30 Seconds to Mars bandmates — brother Shannon and guitarist Tomo Miličević — built and financed completely out of pocket, working on the ultra-ambitious, decidedly weird follow-up to 30STM's breakthrough 2005 album, A Beautiful Lie.

They brought in Flood (U2, Nine Inch Nails, Killers) to produce and advise them, even designing the studio to his exact specifications. (At one point, while giving me a tour, Leto stopped and pointed at a refrigerator-size synthesizer: "That's the same one [Flood] used on Depeche Mode's Violator," he beamed. "You have to be a scientist to play it.") They had Kanye sing and play on a song. They held an RSVP-only "audio experiment" designed to cull whispers and murmurs and shouts for backing tracks. And they are making (and editing at Leto's house) a film that will document the album's creation.

This is all without the backing of a label — or a firm distribution plan, aside from Leto's steadfast insistence that people will hear the album "even if I have to go door-to-door selling it." This album, with songs that stretch to eight minutes and have the synthesizer overload of Tangerine Dream, is completely self-financed, totally uninfluenced and untouched by anyone outside of Leto's inner circle (and maybe Brandon Flowers). And it is — by Leto and his bandmates' own admission — vastly different from their last album, to the point where fan alienation is a near certainty.

So, basically, Leto is making what could either be the most ambitious or disastrous album you might never hear. And he's doing it because he wants to.

And really, shouldn't we have more rock stars like this? Shouldn't every album be a leap of faith, a test of wills, a risk of considerable magnitude? Isn't that how great art is made? Jared Leto gets a lot of crap, but really, he just might be the most driven, focused and downright fearless rock star I've ever met. And his band, much derided and long ignored, are the same way: Down in their studio, while no one was looking, they've been slaving away with no real end in sight, working on a deeply personal, completely unspoiled piece of art. That is brave. That is commendable.

Of course, keep in mind I am basing all of this off a single afternoon I spent with 30STM at Leto's house. I haven't heard a single note of their new album — just listened to them talk about it, watched them run their fingers through their scraggly beards, rub their bloodshot eyes. I have no idea how the album will turn out ... if it ever turns out at all.

But I do know that I wish there were more people like Jared Leto making music these days. We need more certifiable, insanely driven, hyper-focused people to shoulder the load, to take risks and to make art. This is what we should expect from every band we love, yet almost none of them are brave (or crazy) enough to try it.

Jared Leto is. And I can't wait to see how this whole thing turns out. Disaster or triumph, at least he tried. Hard. And hugged even harder.

'The Hills' Will Be Back Without Lauren Conrad

The show will introduce new castmembers next season to keep things spicy.

Lauren Conrad might be saying goodbye at the end of this season of "The Hills," but MTV has announced that the show will be back for another season later this year without its original star. The network also announced that some new castmembers will be joining the show to keep things spicy.

"MTV viewers will find out life in Los Angeles only gets more complicated as friendships, relationships and loyalties are tested like never before as 'The Hills' returns this fall with more episodes of season five," reads a press release to MTV News.

If anyone was worried that Lauren's departure meant other "Hills" favorites would be leaving, fear not: Everyone else will be back to keep the drama alive. "Lauren has moved on, but Heidi, Audrina, Spencer, Brody, Stephanie, Lo and Justin Bobby will be back, as the drama continues with fresh faces, new stories and shocking surprises."

Of course, the show's resident newlyweds will also be back. "Spencer and Heidi will be newlyweds," the statement reads. "So the stakes are higher than ever before for the two to make things work."

Former "Hills" star Whitney Port talked to MTV News recently about why Conrad decided to jump ship. "I think at this point, she's put everybody else and the audience in front of her for the last eight years, so now she decided she needs to put herself first," the "City" star told MTV News. (Editor's note: Conrad actually debuted on "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County" in 2004.) "I think she's not happy anymore."

Whitney said Lauren was tired of having a camera in her face at all times. "We talked about that a lot. I know she was having a lot of difficulty with it as the season was wrapping," she said. "I think she needs to do what she wants to do. It's hard. She's had her life on tape since she was 16 years old."

Adam Lambert's Cabaret Castmates Stage A Show In His Honor

Before Adam Lambert debuted his signature yowl in front of Randy, Paula, Kara and Simon, before the judges and the viewing public declared him a favorite to win the eighth season of "American Idol," the 27-year-old California native rocking painted fingernails and jet black hair was just another talented singer trying to make it in an unforgiving city.

His venue of choice was often West Hollywood, California's Upright Cabaret, and on Saturday night, the revue presented "Upright Loves Lambert," a one-night-only tribute concert to the man himself.

"We've seen Adam perform on 'American Idol,' and all of these people, every single person who has been on [Upright Cabaret], is so proud of him," said Shane Scheel, one of the event's producers. "We've had so many fans of the show come to us and say, 'Is Adam gonna sing? Is Adam gonna sing?' So what we decided to do is just do a whole night dedicated to him, because it's a pretty amazing thing, what he's done."

The night's performers included artists and musicians who had once shared the stage with Lambert at Upright Cabaret, including singers from the musical "Wicked" and another Hollywood revue, "The Zodiac Show." Each person sang a song or two that had some connection to Lambert.

During a growly version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son," singer P.J. Griffith announced, "Frankly, I don't think Danny Gokey is Adam Lambert's competition. I think it's Elvis Presley!"

Before taking the stage, singer Talia Thiesfield told MTV News, "We're a family here. He's like our brother. ... It's a really warm, proud feeling, and we're all rooting for him."

Toward the end of the show, Lambert, who couldn't attend because of contractual issues with "Idol," called in to thank the assembled crowd. "I'm sorry that I can't be there," he said. "I'm completely honored by everything you guys are doing tonight. I can't believe it. It kind of freaks me out, I'm not gonna lie. I love you all!"

He then hopped off the phone to catch some shut-eye before the next day's Ford commercial shoot, but not before adding, "I feel the love, and I can't wait to share it with you guys!"

The crowd, of course, was already sending the love Lambert's way, certain he'll win the "Idol" competition. And when he does, Scheel said, "Every man in America will have eyeliner and nail polish on!"
