LOS ANGELES — Attention Justin Bieber fans: If you think you were upset that he didn't win Best New Artist at the 53rd Grammy Awards, well, you weren't alone.

"I had no clue what was going to happen; I worked really hard these past few years and you know, I'm not going to lie — I was disappointed," Bieber told MTV News backstage at the Staples Center, just minutes after he lost the award to Esperanza Spalding. "But, you know, I'm gonna come back [next year] and we'll take a few home."

Bieber's shocking loss to Spalding in Best New Artist (most experts had him as the clear-cut favorite in the category) was even more unexpected given that, earlier in the night, Bieber had teamed with Jayden Smith and Usher for a stand-out performance on the Grammy stage — one that earned Bieber a standing ovation, a gesture that not only gave him "chills," but also presumably set him up for a triumphant Best New Artist win. "I got a standing O, which was amazing," he smiled. "Usher and Jayden did incredible, and I'm really excited. Tonight was an amazing night."

And remember, he said that despite the fact that he headed home from the Grammys empty-handed. So while he's disappointed, he's not crushed by his BNA loss. Quite the opposite, in fact.

"I'm inspired to work harder than I did last year," he said. "It's going to be hard, but I'm going to try."

And before he left, he had one last message for all his die-hard fans out there:"Bieber fans, don't get too upset," he laughed. "Be happy."

Grammys 2011 Belong To Arcade Fire, Lady Antebellum

Eminem picks up two awards, with Esperanza Spalding topping Justin Bieber and Drake for Best New Artist.

The evening was supposed to be a coronation for Eminem, who was up for a leading 10 awards. But on Sunday night (February 13) at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, Slim Shady ended up with only two rap honors as his smash comeback Recovery took a backseat to country trio Lady Antebellum, who shocked the world with a slew of high-profile wins and a night's-best haul with five Golden Gramophones.

But that wasn't the only banner headline of the night. No, the Album of the Year category served up one of the all-time jaw-droppers in Grammy history, as Eminem was denied that honor for a third time. Many considered that one a lock for the superstar Detroit rapper, whose fight back from addiction to mega-platinum success was the kind of redemption story the Grammys simply can't resist.

Check out photos of Arcade Fire's performance and more!

Except on Sunday night, it was ragtag Canadian indie rockers the Arcade Fire who became the biggest Album of the Year Grammy underdogs in history, snagging the coveted top prize for their exploration of suburban ennui and teen angst on the critically acclaimed The Suburbs.

After just finishing a performance, the band looked shell-shocked, with singer Win Butler crawling out on his knees to accept the prize. "What the hell," he said, dumbfounded, as he thanked his home province of Quebec and fans. "We're going to go play another song, because we like music," he added, as the collective rushed back to their places and Butler deposited his new bauble on an amplifier before ripping into "Ready to Start."

It was a night of celebrating such modern stars as Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Katy Perry, and though those artists all put on superstar performances, they mostly left with memories of a big night, but not much hardware.

The three-and-a-half-hour show opened with an all-star tribute to Grammy legend Aretha Franklin that joined Cristina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine) Martina McBride and Yolanda Adams, followed by Lady Gaga performing "Born This Way" live on TV for the first time. Taking the stage in her pearlescent egg and emerging from the space pod in a flesh-colored skirt and bra that looked like a sexy surgical glove, she put on a dance-pop clinic by busting sinewy disco line-dancing moves and striking fierce poses while giving the song a gospel soul flair.

Justin Bieber made a case for next year's Grammys with a heartfelt solo acoustic strum through "Baby," which glided into a taiko-drum intro for the title track from his 3-D movie, "Never Say Never," complete with break-dancing ninja acrobats, fire breathers and a cameo rap from the equally self-assured Jaden Smith. Mentor Usher then tapped a Janet circa "Rhythm Nation" vibe during a popping-and-locking group dance to "OMG."

He'll have to wait for some Grammy bling, though, as he took a backseat to another surprise out-of-nowhere winner, Esperanza Spalding, who took the honors in the Best New Artist category. The dark-horse win by the underexposed jazz bassist and vocalist was one of the night's big shockers, as she beat out such tipped potential winners as Drake, Mumford & Sons and Florence and the Machine.

Eminem's hit collabo with Rihanna, "Love the Way You Lie," may have gotten blanked five times, but he got the night started early by winning the Best Rap Solo Performance award for "Not Afraid" but later lost out to Gaga in the Best Short Form Music Video race, in which she snagged the prize for "Bad Romance."

The songwriters award, Song of the Year, went to Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now," which beat out Em's "Love the Way You Lie," Cee Lo's "F--- You" (listed as "The Song Otherwise Known as 'Forget You' ") and tracks by Ray LaMontagne and Miranda Lambert. The group beat Em, Cee Lo, B.o.B and Jay-Z in Record of the Year as well.

One of the tightest categories, Best Rap Album, pitted such legends as Jay-Z and the Roots against upstarts B.o.B and Drake, but Slim Shady came through in that one. "This is crazy," the always serious-looking MC said, making sure to thank his producers and Rihanna, whom he said helped propel Recovery to sales of more than 4 million. "Thank you to the fans — what up, Detroit? Stand up!" he shouted at the end.

After picking up some early nods, Gaga won an on-camera award as well, Best Pop Vocal Album for The Fame Monster, besting John Mayer, Perry, Susan Boyle and Bieber for one of her three wins of the night. Wearing a body-hugging leather dress and sporting flesh-colored horns on her forehead and shoulders, Gaga said something unmentionable, then added, "Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart, to all my fans, to all my monsters watching ... I had this dream when I was really young that I could be whoever I wanted to be and no matter what I visioned for myself, I would do it, no matter who didn't believe in me."

One of the most anticipated performances opened with Rihanna belting "Love the Way You Lie" along with Maroon 5's Adam Levine on piano joined by an on-fire Eminem spitting his verses on a stage engulfed in digital flames. That hard-hitter slid into "I Need a Doctor," the titanic, gothic collabo with his reclusive mentor Dr. Dre, who came out in matching all-black attire and proved that his rhyming skills haven't diminished in his nearly decade-long absence from TV performance.

Rihanna was back later in yet another stunning, colorful outfit (this one way, way more revealing) to grind up on Drake during "What's My Name?"

Wearing his peacock-colored Mardi Gras finest, as promised, Cee Lo had a super funky, weird and cool band made up of Henson puppets for a cosmic run-through of the just barely ready for prime time "Forget You" that was highlighted by some funky R&B vocals from guest Gwyneth Paltrow.

Playing their first Grammys, Muse brought the arena noise with a scaled-down version of their techno-prog anthem "Uprising," complete with their towering video columns and an onstage pantomime featuring Molotov cocktail-toting anarchists in gas masks. They also took home Best Rock Album for their bombastic Resistance, beating out a field of veterans including Neil Young, Jeff Beck, Pearl Jam and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Singer Matt Bellamy made sure to thank his management and his "beautiful pregnant girlfriend," actress Kate Hudson.

In an only-at-the-Grammys first, Bruno Mars, B.o.B and Janelle Monáe teamed up, with Mars kicking things off crooning at the piano and B.o.B (sporting a monocle, no less) throwing down his "Nothin' on You" verses over the sounds of a string trio. "Grenade" morphed into an old-school Motown soul jam. Monáe heated things up with the speed funk of "Cold War," which featured her crowd-surfing as Mars bashed away at the drums.

In the game of diva one-upsmanship, Katy Perry went small, levitating on a glittery swing for a sedate "Not Like the Movies" while wearing a bejeweled ice-skating uniform and screening her wedding video on the towering train of her dress. She went big again, though, for a valentine-themed pop bop through "Teenage Dream."

Never ones to tone it down, just before their big moment, Arcade Fire made their Grammy debut with a strobe-light blitz through "The Suburbs/Month of May" that inexplicably featured some BMX riders with helmet cams riding in circles on the stage.

Though he had an amazing year with his Smeezingtons partners, Bruno Mars lost out to Danger Mouse in the Producer of the Year category, where the perpetual music machine was honored for his work with Broken Bells, the Black Keys and Dark Night of the Soul. The White Stripes may have broken up, but their final project, the limited-edition box set of Under the Great White Northern Lights, won for Best Boxed or Limited Edition Package.

Stars didn't disappoint on the red carpet either, from Rihanna's risqué transparent dress to Bieber's white tuxedo, Nicki Minaj's towering Cruella De Vil cotton-candy wig and matching dress and, of course, Gaga in a giant frozen egg.

Among the early Grammy winners: Rihanna (Best Dance Recording for "Only Girl [In the World]"), La Roux (Best Electronic/Dance Album), Lady Gaga (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Bad Romance") and Bruno Mars (Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Just the Way You Are"). It was also a big night for the Roots and John Legend, who won three awards for their collabo album Wake Up!, the same amount taken home by Jay-Z.

There was also more Grammy love for Green Day, who won the ultimate punk-rock award, Best Music Show Album for the Broadway adaptation of American Idiot.

The show also featured performances from country queen Miranda Lambert; an acoustic tour de force with Mumford & Sons, Bob Dylan and the Avett Brothers; Barbra Streisand; four-time Grammy winners Lady Antebellum; and John Mayer, Norah Jones and Keith Urban paying tribute to Dolly Parton. And, wearing one of his late idol Solomon Burke's signature capes, Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger made his first-ever live appearance on the show jamming with Raphael Saadiq on the soul nugget "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love."

Drake Describes His Ideal Valentine's Day Date

The Young Money MC says he prefers a private dinner for two.

Drake has been known to sway his female fans with his suave rap skills and flirty personality, so it shouldn't be surprising that the rapper is actually a big fan of Valentine's Day. With the love-smitten holiday just around the corner, hosts "Jersey Shore" starlet Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Sway had to speak with the rapper on Sunday about his ideal date.

"I think something private," Drake told the hosts during MTV News' Grammy red-carpet live stream. Despite Snook's suggestion to sing his way into his lover's heart, the MC admitted he preferred a more subtle approach, saying, "I don't even want to be too overbearing and start singing to you."

Drizzy continued to explain some of the necessities needed for his ultimate rendezvous. "I would love to go out for a great dinner," he admitted. "I would love to laugh. I like candles. I enjoy incense. I enjoy things that smell nice. I enjoy passionate kisses and massages and things of that nature," adding, "I like Valentine's Day. Every day is Valentine's Day!"

Regardless of his plans for a romantic holiday, Drake said that he's focused on his love for the music and probably won't be added to Lil Wayne's all-star I Am Music II Tour. "I've been touring since last March so I'm just going to take time and make my album," he explained.

However, the MC said that fans can expect him to make some surprise appearances on the 24-city trek. "But there's always those nights where you get that itch to go and join those legends like Nicki and Wayne and Ross onstage, so you'll see me out there, but I'm just trying to take care of the people," he confessed.

Britney Spears Made A Name For Herself With '... Baby One More Time' Video

In anticipation of the premiere of Britney's 'Hold It Against Me' video, we look back at her iconic 1998 clip.

It's hard to believe that in 1998 a schoolgirl uniform caused so much trouble, but that's just what happened when a pouty Britney Spears donned the now infamous costume in her video for "... Baby One More Time." Well, it seems Britney had some idea that the costume idea would make the video memorable.

"My idea originally was just jeans and T-shirts, and we were at the wardrobe fitting and Britney holds up the jeans and T-shirts and says, 'Wouldn't I wear a schoolgirl outfit?' " the video's director, Nigel Dick, told MTV News in 2009. "Every piece of wardrobe in the video came from Kmart, and I was told at the time not one piece of clothing in the video cost more than $17. On that level, it's real. That probably, in retrospect, is a part of its charm."

In 2000, Spears spoke to MTV News about baring her belly in the clip, noting that it felt like the most natural thing in the world to do. "Me showing my belly? I'm from the South: You're stupid if you don't wear a sports bra [when you] go to dance class, you're going to be sweating your butt off," she explained. "It was such a wonderful experience. All these people there, working for you. I had my own trailer. It was an amazing experience."

Spears was then an unknown pop singer and Dick had already established himself as a music video guru. The decision to work with Spears left many perplexed. "My response was, 'It's a great song. I don't know anything about Britney. I never watched 'The Mickey Mouse Club.' She seems like a great kid and she's very enthusiastic,' " he said. "But I just love the song. It's just a great song.

"I decided to try this idea that someone had thrown at me and they hated it — they absolutely hated it," Dick said about the video's simple setup. "So I jumped on the phone with Britney and she says, 'Well, now I think it should be about me in school and there should be lots of hot boys around,' and that was pretty much it — oh, and a bunch of dancing. And my response was, 'OK.' "

In a 1998 interview with MTV, Spears revealed that she wanted the video to reflect the lives of her fans, so she wanted to set it in a school. "The first idea we had for the video was so off the wall," she said. "I was like, 'I want something a lot of kids can relate to.' It's just a fun video."

That same year she noted that as soon as she heard the song, she knew she had to record it. "It's a song every girl can relate to," she said.

The song was recently featured in the "Britney/Brittany" episode of the hit show "Glee," with Lea Michele playing the Britney schoolgirl role.

Before Britney Spears debuts her music video for "Hold It Against Me" on February 17 on MTV, MTV News is taking a look back at some of the singer's most memorable videos. The new much-anticipated clip will air on MTV and MTV.com Thursday at 9:56 p.m./ET, right before a new episode of "Jersey Shore."

The feisty ladies of "Jersey Shore" may troll Karma for some randy juiceheads when they're looking for a good time, but house residents Sammi Giancola and Deena Cortese tuck away their man-eating sides when it comes to that annual love fest, Valentine's Day.

MTV News caught up with the "Shore" sirens recently, and with another V-Day around the corner, we chatted them up about some of their past romantic experiences on February 14. Deena admitted that sometimes Valentine's Day turns into ladies night.

"My girlfriend brought me out to eat because I don't have a valentine," she giggled. She does, however, get some love from the fellas. "Sometimes guys get me a teddy bear, but that's it," D said.

Sammi, whose never-ending, fist-flinging, clothes-chucking drama with on-and-off boyfriend Ronnie Magro has played out on the shore -- and in front of millions of viewers -- over the past three seasons, said a special guy pampered her with a super romantic getaway one year.

"I went away for a weekend," she dished. "I just like the whole romantic thing of Valentine Day. So I feel like I got spoiled."

Far from getting spoiled by her very own muscled-up gorilla, Deena lamented, "I feel like I'm always single."

Sammi motivated Deena, saying, "Aw, D, we gotta find you somebody."

The entire "Jersey Shore" cast is shipping off to Europe for the next season, and Deena added that maybe she'll snag a guy in the crew's spiritual homeland.

"We need to find me an Italian man in Italy," she laughed.

What are some of your favorite Valentine's Day memories? Let us know in the comments!

Don't miss "Jersey Shore," airing Thursday nights at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

Trey Songz can crank out bedroom burners with ease — this is the same guy behind "I Invented Sex" — but for the visual to his latest single, the Virginia crooner said fans shouldn't expect the typical Trey treatment.

MTV News recently sat down with the singer to chat about the newest video from his Passion, Pain & Pleasure LP, and Trey dished that "Love Faces" may throw fans for a loop.

"I love the treatment so much. I think it's gonna be a lot different than what people expect it to be and a lot of that is contributed to the narrative, and I want people to be surprised when they see it," he said. "But it's a great video. It's shot very well. It's myself and [director] Justin Francis. We did it in Miami, and it was a two-day shoot and we have a beautiful leading lady. I'll give away that much."

Trey remained tight-lipped about the details of the visual, but he did break down how the song came together, saying that the track was inspired by another, less sensual track.

"When I first wrote the song it was actually a concept I got from a Houston record with ... the same name, different kind of faces, and I was like, 'That'll be a dope love song,' " Trey revealed.

The "Bottoms Up" belter added that the song is an ode to the sultry expressions lovers make while in the throes of passion.

"I'm sure any man can relate when you look at a beautiful woman and you imagine those things, and I'm sure [women] do those things too when they get into that mental frame when looking at someone," he said. "So I thought it would be a great concept: Beautiful women make beautiful faces when they making love."

Mixtape Daily Main Pick

Street King: Game

Holding It Down For: Compton

Mixtape: Purp & Patron, hosted by DJ Skee and Funkmaster Flex

Real Spit: Nobody would mistake Game for a role model. The Compton, California, rapper has had run-ins with the law and beef with fellow MCs 50 Cent and Joe Budden among others. So when he christened his recently released monster of a double-mixtape (and a third disc that dropped shortly after, subtitled The Hangover) he named the set after some of bad habits.

"You know mixtape titles, album titles, rapper names, it always has to be something that's catchy," he told Mixtape Daily. "So I went through my life and tried to put two things together that I like doing, two of my favorite pastimes, and it was purp [marijuana] and Patron [tequila]. Kids, don't try either at home."

Joints to Check For

» "Taylor Made" (featuring Wiz Khalifa): "It's one of my favorites, featuring the new kid on the block," Game said about the menacing Che Vicious-produced track. "He reps Taylor Gang, and I'm notoriously known as Chuck Taylor. Not to be confused or misconstrued with the shoe. There it is."

» "The Kill": "It was supposed to be for The Red Album, but then it got leaked, so we threw it on the mixtape," Game said about the Cool & Dre lift of Le Roux's "In for the Kill," which has also been touched by rappers like the L.E.P. Bogus Boys, STS, Donnis and Jim Jones, among others. "Everybody loves it. It's conscious. Even Nas called me, like, 'Yo.' And Nas don't hit me about no bull. He said it was crazy."

Eminem And Dr. Dre Perform 'I Need A Doctor' At Grammys

Eminem delivered a knockout at the Grammy Awards.

The Detroit rapper was emphatic and forceful with his rhymes as he paired with Rihanna and Maroon 5's Adam Levine for an intense rendition of his Grammy-nominated hit "Love the Way You Lie."

Rihanna opened the performance from afar with Levine flanking her as the duo were placed in the center of the audience. The star crooned the opening lines of her rendition of the hit song from her album Loud.

"On the first page of our story, the future seemed so bright," she sang, as Levine joined in playing piano. "Then this thing turned out so evil/ I don't know why I'm still surprised/ Even angels have their wicked schemes/ And you take that to new extremes/ But you'll always be my hero/ Even though you've lost your mind."

Eminem then appeared on the stage behind them in a trim leather jacket and matching black shirt and jeans. With flames burning behind him on the LCD screen, he spit a rousing rendition of his powerful song.

"I can't tell you what it really is/ I can only tell you what it feels like," Em spit. "And right now there's a steel knife in my windpipe/ I can't breathe but I still fight while I can fight/ As long as the wrong feels right."

Rihanna, in a dress rivaling Cee Lo's outfit in extravagance, joined Eminem onstage midway through his rap, after a slow amble through the theater aisles. She punctuated Em's stirring vocals with the song's original refrain, bellowing the complex chorus before giving way to "Love the Way You Lie" songwriter Skylar Grey.

Grey, signed by "Love the Way You Lie" producer Alex Da Kid, launched into "I Need a Doctor," the Detox single by Dr. Dre featuring Eminem.

"I need a doctor," she sang over and over.

Eminem attacked his first two verses and then was joined by Dre onstage.

In a matching leather jacket, T-shirt and jeans (but with bright, white sneakers in contrast to Em's black ones), Dre arrived and delivered measured rhymes.

"Went through friends, some of them I put on, but they just left," Dre rapped. "They said they was riding to the death/ But where the f--- are they now, now that I need them?/ I don't see any of them, all I see is Slim."

The Grammy appearance marked Dre's first live TV performance in more than a decade.

Justin Bieber Runs Into Esperanza Spalding Backstage At The Grammys

Plus: Nicki Minaj gets grabby with Snooki, Arcade Fire give high-fives and more from behind the scenes.
By James Montgomery

LOS ANGELES — There was nothing left to do after his band shocked pretty much everyone by taking home Album of the Year for The Suburbs (and breaking into an elated performance of "Ready to Start" that closed the show), so Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler was just handing out high-fives.

Backstage at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, on the way to the press room to share his feelings about winning the night's top prize, Butler was doling out the high-fives to startled members of the media, a permanent smile stretched across his face.

Equally as jovial — even though he lost Best New Artist to Esperanza Spalding — was Justin Bieber, who, after finishing an interview with MTV News, literally walked into Spalding backstage. But rather than be bitter, Bieber shook hands with the newly crowned Grammy winner, congratulating her on her victory.

It was a long day of those kinds of once-in-a-lifetime interactions at the Grammys, as the biggest stars in music packed into the Staples Center to honor their own. Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Hudson embraced and laughed after the stirring tribute to Aretha Franklin that opened the show. Mumford & Sons huddled with their brass band minutes before sharing the stage with Bob Dylan, and Nicki Minaj was introduced to one of her "heroes," Cyndi Lauper.

Outside, on the Grammy red carpet, well, it was all about special MTV News correspondent (and "Jersey Shore" star) Snooki, who flirted with Bruno Mars, told Tyrese he was "hot" and informed R&B legend Ronald Isley matter-of-factly that he has "nice teeth."

Snooki told Hudson and Jennifer Lopez that they both looked fantastic and, when Lady Gaga arrived on the carpet inside her egg, not only did the Snookster shout that she "loved" Gaga, but LG returned the love, waving to her from inside the egg.

"I've seriously got chills!" Snooki enthused.

Elsewhere, Snooki let Minaj grab a handful of both her breasts, she pouted when Rihanna didn't walk the carpet, and, when Lil Wayne blew by, huge cigar in his mouth, she tried to stop him by shouting his name. He didn't hear her, and Snook was upset.

"That sucks," she sighed. "I love him."

It was, to be honest, probably the only low point of the entire day. That's how these things tend to go, especially when there are so many stars in such a small place. High-fives all around.

'Jersey Shore' starlet and Young Money rapper become fast friends on the red carpet.
By Eric Ditzian

Last year at the Grammys, Snooki held court on the red carpet as MTV News' guest correspondent, sharing deeply odd and seriously hilarious chats with the likes of Justin Bieber ("Do you get a lot of, like, girls?") and Katy Perry ("Did you really kiss a girl?").

Is it any surprise, then, that the "Jersey Shore" star once again found herself in some unlikely and amusing bonding sessions with some of the biggest names in the music business? Perhaps none of her red-carpet interviews was more entertaining than her lengthy convo with Nicki Minaj. They talked fashion, reality TV, awards-show craziness and, by the end, it was hard to tell which gal was more excited about the meeting.

"Did you know that I'm obsessed with her?" Nicki said.

Countered Snooki, "I'm obsessed with Nicki!"

Things got started when Minaj — done up like a safari-inspired bride of Frankenstein — sauntered over, leading Snickers to wonder, "Is this your hair or no?"

"Snooks? What, do you mean to dis my hair?" Nicki said.

"I mean I'm jealous!"

"OK, whatever! I wanted you to wear your pouf today so we could be matching."

"I did," confessed Snooki, "but it deflated from the heat, you know what I mean?"

And thus, a friendship was born. It was a long time in the making. Nicki made clear that she's a big fan of "Jersey Shore," referencing recent shenanigans on the show and revealing that she's already made the acquaintance of one of Snooki's pals.

"Guess who I just spoke to? Pauly D," she said. "He was basically saying if he could be my valentine, and I finally said yes."

"That's cute!" said Snooki, who had even more effusive praise for Nicki's over-the-top, animal print-heavy outfit.

"I had to do some leopard because I'm ferocious," Nicki said.

Before she headed inside, the Pink Friday songstress paid the reality star one compliment Snooki is unlikely to forget.

"I'm proud of you," she said. "You're doing your thing, and I'm excited."

Muse Bask In First Grammy Win, Make Plans For Kid-Friendly Album

Best Rock Album winners are thinking about lullabies for new album
By James Montgomery

Muse's Dominic Howard and Matthew Bellamy
Photo: MTV News

LOS ANGELES — Minutes after winning their first-ever Grammy Award (for Best Rock Album, in case you're keeping score at home), Muse's Matthew Bellamy and Dominic Howard stood backstage at the Staples Center, holding a replica of their brand-new Golden Gramophone — "the real one's in the mail," Bellamy laughed — and looking very much like their heads might explode at any second.

Because, really, after a year in which they finally, totally conquered U.S. audiences with their Resistance album and singles like "Uprising" and "Undisclosed Desires," winning a Grammy is pretty much the capper on a thoroughly amazing year for the trio.

"I never expected to win something like this in America," Bellamy beamed. "It's probably the biggest, most important music award in the world, and it's a great honor. Especially since it's an award for the album we made. We've won quite a lot of awards for our live show, but we've never quite won an award for the actual album, so it's amazing."

So now, the next logical step is the follow-up to The Resistance. Muse's short-term plans include a quick run of South American shows and a much-deserved break, but that doesn't mean they're not already making recording plans — which at this point, basically, include "all being based in the same city, London, which, for us, will definitely be a different approach." And Bellamy, who is expecting his first child with actress Kate Hudson, already has an idea or two about how Muse's new songs will sound. And, yes, his impending fatherhood is weighing heavily on his mind.

"Yeah, I'm definitely going to bring out the Vibraphone, [maybe write] a lullaby, things like that," he laughed. "I'll definitely get a lullaby on there."

Near-fall comes a week after her much-talked-about struggle with the national anthem lyrics at the Super Bowl.

LOS ANGELES — Christina Aguilera can't seem to catch a break, but at least she was able to catch herself.

Exactly one week after her much-talked-about struggle with the national anthem at the Super Bowl, the powerhouse pop singer slipped and nearly fell off the stage at the conclusion of the Grammy tribute to Aretha Franklin.

As the crowd leapt to a standing ovation and roared their approval of her unsurprisingly standout participation in the performance, Christina slipped and very nearly fell from the stage but caught her balance without smashing to the floor or causing any serious damage (save for some natural embarrassment).

Everything went smoothly for Aguilera at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles just before that, as she joined Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, Florence Welch and Yolanda Adams for the show's opening performance, which consisted of a medley of Aretha Franklin's hits. Xtina kicked out the jams in typically bombastic fashion when she took center stage to tackle Aretha's "Ain't No Way." The 68-year-old Queen of Soul has battled against much more serious troubles than her 30-year-old platinum-blond disciple, reportedly undergoing surgery for pancreatic cancer last year.

The ensemble had just wrapped up "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" when Aguilera lost her balance as they took a bow. Luckily, she was able to right herself by grabbing hold of a microphone stand.

Christina's first performance since botching the words to the national anthem could have been viewed as a form of pop-culture redemption. But, thanks to this slipup, the Net is once again abuzz about her for all of the wrong reasons, with some even criticizing her take on Aretha's classics, which was full of her signature melisma — the packing of multiple notes into a single syllable — much as her version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" was.

Esperanza Spalding Calls Best New Artist Grammy Win 'Unexpected'

Posted: 14 Feb 2011 12:57 AM PST

'I really didn't think it was going to be me,' jazz singer/bassist tells MTV News of topping Justin Bieber and Drake for coveted award.

Who would've thought that a young jazz bassist would come in and steal the Best New Artist Grammy out from under the likes of Justin Bieber, Florence and the Machine and Drake? Not too many people, that's for sure. In fact, gambling mavens Ladbrokes and Bodog placed the odds of Esperanza Spalding winning the award at an unlikely 20-to-1.

Check out photos of Esperanza Spalding's big win and more!

But she did it, and she is the first jazz artist ever to do so.

"I really didn't think it was going to be me," a delighted Spalding told MTV News after her win. "I was one of those [surprised] people. ... It was so unexpected, that's the truth. I'm grateful to all my people in my big musical family that have given me so much support and help over the years," Spalding gushed. "I don't really think this is for me; it's for all of us. And I wish they could all be here to put one finger on this with me."

Since we're still reeling over the fact that Spalding overcame the tsunami of popularity currently surrounding her fellow nominees, it's time to take a closer look at this mega underdog-turned-big winner.

The 26-year-old Portland, Oregon, native discovered music at an early age, teaching herself to play the violin at age 5 and playing with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon. She dabbled in the guitar, the oboe and cello before settling on the bass in high school. After putting in time in at both Portland State University and the prestigious Berklee College of Music on scholarships, she broke onto the jazz scene in a big way with her album Chamber Music Society. Though Spalding was primarily known in jazz circles, her Best New Artist Grammy will surely put her on the proverbial music map for a new group of fans.

"I am a bassist, composer and singer," Spalding explained to MTV News. "I guess that's the easiest way to describe the music I do. You really just have to hear it. It's rooted in jazz, but there's a lot of stuff up in there. You just have to have a taste."

Not only that, but Spalding joined music legend Prince on his Welcome 2 America Tour. She's also performed at the White House and was featured in an ad campaign for Banana Republic.

Selena Gomez 'Very Excited' About Eminem/ Dr. Dre Grammy Performance

'I love Eminem. I'm a huge Eminem fan, so I'm very excited to see him,' Gomez says.

For those clued in to the world of Selena Gomez, Disney Channel darling and star of "The Wizards of Waverly Place," budding recording artist, and the current romantic interest of one Justin Bieber (or so we assume — they have yet to publicly acknowledge the fact that they're dating, comments from co-stars and vacation photos aside), her attendance at Sunday night's Grammy Awards ceremony might seem solely pegged to her Bieber connection and presenting an award. However, when MTV News caught up with Gomez on the red carpet, she revealed that she was most excited about a certain rapper from Detroit, not a teen sensation from Canada.

Check out photos of Eminem's Grammy performance and more!

"I'm actually very excited about Dr. Dre and Eminem' s performance," Gomez told MTV's Sway during our live-stream broadcast. "I love Eminem. I'm a huge Eminem fan, so I'm very excited to see him."

Gomez added that her stepdad was equally excited for that performance (Dre's first in about 10 years), in that he never wants to come with her to big events, but made an exception for Eminem.

When asked why she loves Eminem so, Gomez said it's all about his swagger — or lack thereof.

"For me, I think he's so free within himself," she explained. "Music is an awesome way to express yourself, but when you see him onstage and he comes to events like this, you never see him having to be all stiff and cool. He's just in a hoodie, goes on and performs, and I love that."

Sway wondered aloud whether this means Gomez likes bad boys.

"Sometimes, yeah," she admitted with a smile.

And what about an Eminem/Gomez musical collaboration? Would she be into that?

"Oh gosh. Who would say no to that?" she said. "I don't think I'm cool enough. I don't have enough street cred for that."

Nicki Minaj On Grammys: 'It Doesn't Matter What I'm Nominated For!'

'To sell, like, a million records, in this economy, that's crazy,' she tells MTV News on red carpet.

Nicki Minaj's debut album took the top spot on the charts, she's a Grammy nominee and presenter and she met up with her reality-TV heroine Snooki on the red carpet. But despite all the high points, the 26-year-old star assured MTV News that the best is yet to come.

"In my head, I've already done two movies, I've already put my second album out, I've already gone on a world tour. That's what I'm looking for the next 12 months to bring," she said shortly before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards at the Los Angeles Staples Center, where she was nominated alongside Ludacris in the Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group category. "I have some surprises that people are not gonna believe. I have some surprises that I'm going to be able to announce really, really soon."

The hip-hop star's Pink Friday reached #1 on the Billboard 200 chart nearly three months after its release. She's done "Saturday Night Live" and "The Tonight Show," and her leopard-print couture turned heads at the Grammys. It's been a crazy ride and one that she's learned from in ways that will benefit her greatly in the future.

"I've learned to never rush anything in my career or my life anymore," she said. "The last year taught me that. Like, even with the new album, it's going to take its course naturally and everything is going to work out. Because before I used to stress out. You know, 'Am I nominated for this?'

"It doesn't matter what I'm nominated for! I'm working! I am a working artist in the freaking worst economy ever. To sell, like, a million records, in this economy, that's crazy."

Next on the Young Money rapper's agenda is a tour with mentor Lil Wayne that will also feature Blink-182's Travis Barker and Rick Ross, among others. "I'm really looking forward to that tour," she said. "And just getting back to L.A. and cranking out some new records and all of that good stuff. I'm working with a lot of new producers as well, so I'm excited."

Minaj's schedule may get hectic, but she works hard to maintain balance and perspective.

"Overall, I'm in a peaceful place. And that's the only thing that you could ask for. To be in the midst of this chaotic business," she added, pointing to the red carpet around her, "and be able to find peace? I'm good."

Arcade Fire Rock Out For Grammy Finale Performances

Album of the Year winners transform stage into BMX skate park on indie band's big night.

Just two days after their anti-Grammy party in Los Angeles, the Arcade Fire shifted gears and played for a worldwide audience on the Grammy stage on Sunday night (February 13).

Check out photos of Arcade Fire's performance and more!

The indie darlings not only performed twice during the ceremony, they also walked away with the Album of the Year award for their sweeping chart-topper The Suburbs. "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" star Jason Segel introduced the Montreal natives, who were making their first-ever Grammy appearance. They kicked things off with their raucous, rolling "Month of May."

The eight-member group, led by lead singer Win Butler, welcomed a gaggle of BMX riders — some sporting POV cameras to capture the broadcast for fans — to the Grammy stage, which was then transformed into something of a rock-and-roll skate park.

The Arcade Fire gave a loud, but not overly flashy performance that was a fitting end to an evening chock-full of big numbers. But as it turned out, the song was a precursor to an even bigger moment. Minutes after the band's performance of the arena-ready "Month of May," Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand appeared onstage to announce the evening's final and most prestigious award: Album of the Year.

Besting mainstream acts Eminem, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, a visibly stunned Arcade Fire emerged from backstage to accept the award, pulling off one of the evening's biggest upsets.

"What the hell!" an amazed Butler said. Apparently the singer's excitement got the best of him, as he was bleeped presumably for using strong language later on in his acceptance speech.

The newly anointed Grammy winner thanked the crowd and announced, "We're going to go play another song, 'cause we like music!" A man of his word, Butler and his musical ensemble immediately took to their bevy of instruments — Butler placed their Grammy on one of the amps — and played again. Finally, Butler thanked his parents and told the Grammy audience they could exit to the next tune as they began the toe-tapping, head-bobbing Suburbs single "Ready to Start."

In spite of his instructions to the crowd, the attendees seemed happy to stick around for the infectious number.

Drake And His Mom Share Excitement Over Grammy Night

'I've always been proud of my son, but to see him come to a pinnacle like this is really quite a journey,' Sandi Graham said of the MC.

If there's one person that knows all too well about Drake's fast-track rise to the top of the charts, it's his mother, Sandi Graham. During MTV News' Grammy Awards red-carpet live-stream on Sunday, the Young Money MC and his mom shared their excitement over the landmark event with hosts "Jersey Shore" starlet Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Sway.

Check out photos of Drake on the red carpet and more!

"I'm excited. I'm glad you're here," a fresh-suited Drake told the breakout reality star after exchanging some friendly (and flirty) lines. However, the hip-hop heavyweight was also excited to show off his date for the big night: his mother.

After exchanging a hug with the Snooks, Sandi went on to explain to the hosts about how pleased she was to share the Grammy evening with her son. "It is an extremely exciting moment. I've always been proud of my son, but to see him come to a pinnacle like this is really quite a journey," she told Sway before flashing a smile. "It's wonderful. I feel honored to be here, to be part of this."

"He's a great challenge, but in a great way. He is a unique guy," she continued.

As for Drake's onstage collabo with Rihanna, the rapper explained that preparation for the performance with the Barbadian songstress went smoothly as ever due to their tight connection.

"Rehearsal was just like any other day with us. I mean, we have an incredible bond," he said. "It was amazing to get a #1 song with somebody that I love dearly. Now to share it with the world tonight on this platform — I'm very excited."

Even with his slew of song team-ups, Drake admitted that Rihanna is the only one he would want to share the Grammy stage with, saying, "I wouldn't want to be up there with anyone else this year. I think it's a great step for both of us."

Lady Gaga Emerges From Egg To Perform 'Born This Way' At The Grammys

Surprisingly sparse performance lets brand-new single shine on Grammy stage.

After arriving on the red carpet in an egg, incubating for her big performance, Lady Gaga hit the Grammy stage. She emerged from the egg in a high ponytail, gold bra top and long skirt, her makeup all black and gold. Her dancers wore similar yolk-colored tunics.

Check out pictures of Lady Gaga's Grammy arrival here.

The performance was surprisingly sparse for the typically over-the-top performer, allowing her brand-new single, "Born This Way," to shine.

Midway through the song, an organ emerged from the stage floor and Gaga put a surprisingly dark, horror-movie-like spin on the notes of the song and then belted out the rest of the bridge as her dancers surrounded her. The disco vibe of the tune kicked back in as her dancers ripped off their tunics and danced around her. Before leaving the stage, Gaga put on her trench and hat as the song faded out. Gaga and her dancers ended the performance with their paws up as an homage to all her Little Monsters watching from home.

It was Gaga's premiere live performance of "Born This Way" after debuting the track Friday. It serves as the lead single from her May album release of the same name. The song was written and co-produced by Gaga; Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow also got co-production credits on the track.

"I wrote ['Born This Way'] in 10 f---ing minutes," she explains in the upcoming issue of Vogue. "And it is a completely magical message song. And after I wrote it, the gates just opened, and the songs kept coming. It was like an immaculate conception."

Who says the Grammys reward nothing but pop music?

Critical darlings Arcade Fire nabbed the top prize for Album of the Year at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night. The Canadian indie rock group's The Suburbs bested major label albums from megastars Eminem, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, whose media campaigns were as relentless as their radio hits were ubiquitous. The category was rounded out by Lady Antebellum, huge stars in the world of country and multiple Grammy nominees in their own right.

Check out photos of Arcade Fire's performance and more!

Arcade Fire's Album of the Year win was something of an upset, although MTV News' own James Montgomery did sort of call it for them. The band's Grammy heat was part of a wave that showed how much traction indie releases have gained with Grammy voters in recent years.

The Suburbs was released by Merge Records, the independent label based in Durham, North Carolina, that has been home to underground acts like Lou Barlow, The Clientele, Superchunk and Neutral Milk Hotel. In addition to performing, Arcade Fire were up for three Grammys this year.

On Sunday night in Los Angeles, groups like Mumford & Sons, Florence and the Machine, Black Keys, Vampire Weekend, Band of Horses and Broken Bells all joined Arcade Fire in battle with more mainstream nominees like Justin Bieber and Eminem. The Suburbs has sold roughly 400,000 copies, making it a smash for an indie label, particularly in the age of downloading.

Arcade Fire's Funeral (2005) and Neon Bible (2008) were both nominated for Album of the Year. The Montreal, Canada-based multi-instrumental band is led by husband-and-wife team Win Butler and Régine Chassagne. They are beloved by everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Rolling Stone.
