| T.I. Says 'Don't Pass The Buck' In Exclusive Post-Sentencing Interview Posted: 29 Mar 2009 04:26 AM PDT MC tells MTV News' Sway this will be the last time he'll discuss sentence before going to prison.
ATLANTA — T.I. opened his life up to the "Road to Redemption" cameras, allowing them to follow him through highs, lows and everything in between. But now that he's been sentenced and is set to report to jail within the next 60 days, the rapper said it may be time for him to hush up about his ordeal. As he put it, he's taking a "vacation" of sorts. "This is probably the last time I speak about this," Tip told MTV News' Sway on Saturday, just one day after his fail was sealed in a Georgia federal courthouse. "Don't ask me no more questions. Finito." The exclusive interview, scheduled to air Tuesday on MTV, will be the first the wordsmith has given since a district judge officially sentenced him to one year and one day in prison. The sit-down will also be the only time Tip speaks to a media outlet about his case prior to entering prison.
The conversation touched on a series of topics, including his final thoughts as he stood before the judge, his appearance in court and his plans to spend time with his family for the next few weeks -- out of the spotlight. "I'm always working," T.I. said. So now he hopes to take a break from his career and concentrate on his loved ones. He explained that some of his family members are still trying to come to grips with his impending departure, but "by the time they get over it, I'll be home," T.I. said with a small laugh. The interview, billed as "T.I.'s Road to Redemption: The Reckoning," wasn't all jokes, however. Although the rapper expressed pride in owning up to his mistakes in court, he also said he felt embarrassed as the kids from the show watched him stand before the judge. He was ashamed that he hadn't learned his lesson until later in life. Ultimately, though, T.I. said he felt "relieved" to close the dark chapter of his life that started on the eve of the 2007 BET Hip-Hop Awards, when he was busted for illegally attempting to purchase firearms. Tip has said in interviews and in his lyrics that he tried to buy the guns as a means to protect himself in the wake of the 2006 shooting death of his close friend and assistant, Philant Johnson. T.I. said he became more mild-mannered, patient and thoughtful in the time following his arrest, which he described in court on Friday as "the most insightful period of my life." "I showed what you should do [when you make a mistake]," he told Sway. "If you did it, you did it. Don't try to pass the buck on to someone else." "I was very excited about the new popularity I had," Gucci said about the fresh batch of fans he gained during the past seven months he spent in jail. "I got a bigger audience to dig my new stuff. I'm always making music, so to do it in front of bigger audience so more people can tune in ... I got more listeners now." While he was incarcerated, Gucci's camp and friends launched a campaign to help keep his name in people's ears. He had over an album's worth of material circulating through the underground, including tracks he recorded for himself or guest appearances on other artists' songs. He wasted no time in getting back out there after he was released from the big house. "My new mixtape is called Writing on Da Wall," he explained in Atlanta recently. "I started working on it when I got out of jail. ... I put some of the best verses I think I ever wrote on it. I'm gearing them up for my album ... I just went hard in on 'em. Apparently Fif is in Las Vegas now working with Dre on Before I Self Destruct, and somewhere along the way, he's going to put aside material for a street CD. "I heard they locked it down this weekend," Whoo Kid said. "[The album] is still in the oven. It's so many records, so it's kind of hard to choose which one to really showcase immediately out there. But as he's doing his "Pimpin' Curly," annihilating Rick Ross, he's working on a mixtape and getting it cracking out there. Same with Banks. Banks killed iTunes with his freestyle, so we're trying to figure out how the next couple of weeks are going to work out. But mixtapes are in the works. You know mixtapes are in the works. [Banks] don't play when it comes to freestyles." Whoo Kid said the entire G-Unit are in "hungry dog" mode. "Rabid on the equipment," the DJ said. "You don't wanna go over there, it's vicious. You see how bad it gets with 50 when it come to revenge and beef — I'm scared to go over there." Speaking of scared, Eminem's camp is wary of Whoo Kid getting anywhere near the new Slim Shady record, "We Made You." The Queens native laughs that they are afraid of him leaking the track. "They're stressing me not to come to the studio so I don't bluetooth their computers," Whoo Kid laughed. "They're mixing it down in Vegas. It might be today, tomorrow — but it's definitely gonna come out." ... Only for the fans of lyrics — Keith Murray and Canibus are recording an independent rap album together, with Erick Sermon supplying the beats. "What happened was, I think Keith Murray and Canibus were doing shows [and came up with the idea]," Sermon explained. "They've been doing shows for the last six months back and forth. I guess somebody stepped to them about putting something together. They called me to do the album. I think they're two songs deep so far, but it's kinda ill to hear them. Keith Murray is out-there, lyrically, and now Canibus is a step way further out-there than he is. It's a dope mixture." Sermon promised that there will be no commercialism on the album — the duo aren't going for airplay, they just want to capture the underground audience. "It's only for heads," E said. "I don't think there's gonna be one radio record on there, just rhymes and concepts." Expect the concepts to get really weird — Canibus has made records where he raps from the perspective of the AIDS virus, while Murr can go interplanetary like he did on "Escape from the World." Sermon says the two are definitely going for the jugular. "The whole thing that what made EPMD dope, that's what made Redman and Method Man dope — you kinda battle each other in between. You get busy. We do a track together and I'm like, 'Damn, he said something!' You go right. ... If Canibus says something, Murray gonna try to [say something better]. But it's friendly so far. Britney Spears has had more than her share of ups and downs over the past few years. But with a successful new album, Circus, and a nationwide tour packing in crowds all across the country, she's definitely back on top. However, some of her die-hard supporters beg to differ -- because they insist she never went away in the first place! Before and after Britney's Pittsburgh concert on Friday, most fans agreed, comeback or not, Spears was on top of her game.
"I don't think she ever went away," said 21-year-old Hugh Stumpp. "She's on top of the world right now and she's continued to grow and it's great." "Her huge tour comeback just shows how great of an artist she really is and shows how she can bounce back from anything," added 20-year-old Steve Delong. As fans left the show donning their handmade "It's Britney, B---h" T-shirts and replicas of her famous music-video looks, it was quite obvious that these supporters had never left Britney's side. "Everyone just goes through a rough patch," said Danielle DeRuschi, 20. "If you like her you stand up for her and you just follow her through the end." Über fan Natalie Nilon, 27, was ecstatic that Spears was back on top, but she did notice that one aspect of the old Britney was missing. "When she first came out a long time ago, she talked a lot more and she interacted more with the crowd," Nilon said. "I just wanted to hear more from her because, you know, it was her chance to talk. But it was still good to hear her say, 'What's up, Pittsburgh!' " Lori Barker, 29, who donned a replica of Spears' sexy stewardess ensemble from the "Toxic" video, also had one minor request for the singer on her next tour. "Take me backstage!" Barker cried. | Frankie Delgado Says He And Rihanna Are 'Just Friends' Posted: 29 Mar 2009 09:49 AM PDT 'It's Hollywood, people talk a lot,' 'Bromance'/ 'The Hills' star says of romance rumors.
Rihanna and Chris Brown are reported to be taking some time off after their reported reunion, and many rumors have surfaced about who Rihanna is dating these days. Some of those rumors have linked her with "Bromance" and "The Hills" star Frankie Delgado, but Deglado told People.com Saturday that he and the singer are not an item. At the grand opening of Wet Republic, the pool party at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Delgado reportedly told the site that the two are "just friends." Delgado said he thinks the chatter got started because "she's been out, hanging out, I guess. It's Hollywood, people talk a lot." Asked how Rihanna is doing, Delgado said only, "She's good." Rihanna was in the news last week after getting a new tattoo — of a gun. Tattoo artist BangBang told MTV News of the ink, "She flew me out for the purposes of tattooing one of her friends. I've tattooed her a few times, and she gave me a call and asked if I could come out to her house. I wound up tatting her as well. We've been playing with it for about a year, and I was at her house, and I suggested she finally get the gun." After Brown and Rihanna's alleged altercation on February 8 before the Grammy Awards, the couple reportedly reunited and spent a few days at Diddy's Miami home. Brown was photographed smiling widely while riding a jet-ski during that visit, which led some to wonder whether he understood the gravity of the incident. A few days later, Diddy explained why he loaned the couple his house. "It was a dark time for them, and I was there as more of a support," he said on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." "I'm not immersed in [the proceedings]. I'm not going to pass judgment on it. I'm going to be there as a friend." Brown, 19, has been charged with two felony counts, assault and making criminal threats, in the case and is due back in court on April 6 for his arraignment, at which time he could enter a plea. | 'T.I.'s Road To Redemption' Is 'Life-Changing,' Says Parole Officer Posted: 28 Mar 2009 10:39 PM PDT Letter read in court written by officer in charge of former gang member Anthony.
ATLANTA — Like any parent or teacher,T.I. probably couldn't name which one of the "Road to Redemption" kids is his favorite. Undoubtedly, though, one of the most successful youth interventions T.I. helped lead was the one in chapter 3, titled "Your Environment Does Not Define You." Anthony, a California teenager, was a member of the Crips gang and a fledgling chef. In the episode, Tip called the case "far more extreme" than the previous interventions, because Anthony's behavior was influenced by previous generations of family members who were also gangbangers. Anthony eventually turned his life around following his introduction to Tip. He's now tending to his pregnant girlfriend and working for a notable chef. His probation officer, Kimberly McKinney, has noticed the impact T.I. has had on Anthony. The change has been so significant, in fact, that she wrote a letter to T.I. that was read in the courtroom by the rapper's lawyer on Friday. Tip didn't know about the gesture, as McKinney mailed the note directly to his lawyer. The first time T.I. actually heard the letter was during his sentencing. "I am the probation officer of Anthony, and he is an awesome young man with a brighter future because you have made a tremendous impact on his life," the letter, obtained by MTV News, reads. "For that I thank you, and for the youth without a voice I also speak for them, thank you. Your program was very enlightening and once you started tuning in you could not tune out. My entire caseload, the youth at my church and in my community, friends and family watched faithfully. If I had to select two words that I heard most often describing the program, it would be: life changing." McKinney noted that "Road to Redemption" helped encourage at-risk youth to pull their lives together and sparked hope in kids committed to changing their behavior. The Harbor City, California, probation officer wrote that she hoped Tip would continue his work. She noted that to help someone change their life, a person must first start with oneself, and "it is obvious that [T.I.'s] change has come." | T.I. Meets Up With 'Road To Redemption' Co-Stars After Sentencing Posted: 28 Mar 2009 05:04 AM PDT 'We're gonna try to do as much as we can to continue your positive path,' Tip tells the kids over breakfast.
ATLANTA — T.I. has been playing catch-up with his "Road to Redemption" kids since Thursday evening, when a few of them were flown into Atlanta, including Pee Wee, Anthony, Cynthia and Donald. Trey, another of the show's featured kids, lives in Georgia and drove to Atlanta. After T.I.'s sentencing Friday morning, the rapper treated the kids to breakfast at the Social House, where he chatted them up. "How's things going with that teacher of yours?" Tip asked Cynthia, who rolled her eyes in response. Tip split his time in the restaurant between the kids and a table with his family. His mood was more than upbeat after learning his plea deal had been honored by the judge. He was jovial with the kids, while remaining stern at the same time.
"I hope you all enjoy your time down here," said T.I., who introduced all the kids to his lawyer, seated next to him. "We're gonna try to do as much as we can to continue your positive path." Later, in a chat with Pee Wee, Tip brought up Mario, who appeared in episode eight. "I heard he was arrested for attempted murder," T.I. said. The comment elicited a strong reaction from Pee Wee, who said he knew something bad was going to happen with Mario. Mario drew one of Tip's most drastic interventions in the series, with the rapper bringing the troubled teen into an ambulance to speak with a paramedic about the damages bullet wounds do to humans and confronted him with another person whose life had been tragically altered after being shot. The kids all reflected on Tip's effect on their lives and thanked him profusely. The rapper also scheduled a shopping trip for the bunch to reward their dedication following their interventions. And on Friday night, the kids went to the Atlanta Hawks basketball game against defending champions the Boston Celtics. On Saturday (March 28), Tip will sit down with the kids to discuss the ramifications of his sentencing, what it means for him and what they should take away from his lesson. PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania — A stampede of young women has stormed the Mellon Arena. Dressed in their Friday-night best, excited young fans, largely ranging from ages 13 to 30, are buzzing throughout the halls of the venue. Groups of friends are huddled together, laughing; mothers and daughters are walking hand in hand. Then, a single drumbeat brings the crowd to attention — and immediately sends them into a frenzy. Girls in high heels sprint in all directions; the long line of women waiting to use the restroom dissipates in about 10 seconds. Ladies and gentlemen, Britney Spears is about to take the stage. Of course, Britney needed no introduction here. From the minute the tape of her ringmaster — celebrity blogger Perez Hilton — appeared on the jumbo screen, fans were on their feet, filling the arena with deafening screams. All of their hard work — making homemade Britney T-shirts and necklaces, memorizing lyrics, mastering dance moves — was validated when the pop princess descended onto the stage from a suspended metal balcony and began to sing "Circus." And what a circus it was! After the opening number — which included an elaborate team of dancers, clowns, and acrobats — Spears ditched her red ringmaster's coat and morphed into a sexy cage dancer for "Piece of Me." All eyes were on the pop star as she changed into sparkly and sexy outfits throughout the show, which featured a similar format and costumes from earlier shows in the tour. Britney was a veiled princess for a Bollywood-inspired version of "Me Against the Music," a temptress in an S&M style bodysuit adorned with black tassels, and a sexy sergeant in a tight corset worn over a blue police shirt for the "Womanizer" finale. And judging from the screams after each costume change, her Pittsburgh fans didn't mind a little skin. Despite the success of Spears' latest album, Circus, the songs that got the most love were classics like "Toxic" and a revamped version of "...Baby One More Time." Even the phrase "It's Britney, b—-h," which was included during a musical segue, got an overwhelming reaction. And of course, fans raved when Spears spoke to them before singing "Everytime" while perched on an umbrella above the stage. A video montage covering a decade of iconic Britney music-video images that played before the finale also got a big reaction from the crowd — leaving no doubt that this crowd truly believes that Britney is back (if she ever went away!). | Jonas Brothers And 'Twilight' Rule The Kids' Choice Awards Posted: 28 Mar 2009 07:31 AM PDT 'iCarly,' 'High School Musical 3: Senior Year,' Miley Cyrus and more also took home Blimps.
They may have only been up for one award on Saturday night (March 28) at the Kids' Choice Awards, but the night definitely belonged to the Jonas Brothers. A who's who of teen stars were on hand at the 22nd annual awards show, hosted by Dwayne Johnson. The first award of the night, Favorite TV Show, was handed out by Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson and went to "iCarly." "We wouldn't be up here without you guys," the show's star, Miranda Cosgrove, told the super-excited crowd. Tons of celebs made appearances throughout the night, like Favorite Male Singer winner Jesse McCartney, Will Ferrell, Sandra Bullock and Hugh Jackman, all of whom got slimed, a time-honored KCA tradition. Although she wasn't there to claim her Blimp, Selena Gomez won Favorite TV Actress for her work on "Wizards of Waverly Place." Keeping the girl power alive were the Pussycat Dolls, who didn't win any Blimps but did perform "When I Grow Up" and their version of the "Slumdog Millionaire" anthem "Jai Ho."
Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron, Corbin Bleu and Ashley Tisdale were there to accept the Favorite Movie award for "High School Musical 3: Senior Year." Hudgens also took home a Blimp for Favorite Movie Actress. "A quick shout-out to Lucas [Grabeel] and Monique [Coleman]. We love you guys," Efron said to his missing castmates while accepting the award. "Thank you all for embracing 'HSM.' We love you guys." It was cute-boy overload as Efron presented the award for Favorite Music Group to the Jonas Brothers. "Thank you guys so much," Joe said, before Nick added, "It's been amazing. We've enjoyed the ride thoroughly." More swooning ensued when "Gossip Girl" heartthrob Chace Crawford announced the JoBros' performance. They rocked the crowd and made girls scream when they performed "S.O.S." and "Burnin' Up." There was also love for "Twilight," which won for Favorite Book. "This is awesome," Taylor Lautner told the crowd. "Stephenie Meyer wanted to tell you guys 'thank you.' And I can tell you firsthand you guys are gonna love [the 'New Moon' movie]." Leonardo DiCaprio won the most serious award of the night, taking home the Big Green Help Blimp for inspiring people to be more proactive in saving the environment. And although Miley Cyrus was up for a slew of awards, she only managed to win one for Favorite Female Singer. While hugging her Blimp and fighting back tears, she said, "I really thought I was going to lose." The night came to an end with Johnson fulfilling his assigned task of finding the right key to make the volcanic slime pyramid explode. What was that key? The Jonas Brothers singing "Lovebug." Other big winners of the night included "American Idol" for Favorite Reality Show, Will Smith for Favorite Movie Actor and past KCA host Jack Black for Favorite Voice in an Animated Movie.
