It's been nearly a year since Travis Barker performed with a DJ, but now, he's getting ready to hit the road again, this time with Kanye West's main man behind the decks.

Barker will be teaming up with turntablist A-Trak — West's touring DJ — for a run of shows, scheduled to kick off March 9-10 at Hollywood's Roxy Theatre. The gigs will mark the first time he's performed live with a DJ since the death of his partner DJ AM in August. But, as Barker told MTV News earlier this month, he had always considered working with Trak on a project of some sort. And after the two jammed a bit last year, both men knew they had to take their show to the stage.

"I had met A-Trak last year at Coachella, but I had seen a set of his at Avalon in Los Angeles maybe four years ago, with AM," Barker told MTV News. "He was a guy who I always wanted to work with in some way. So I gave him a call."

"When Travis hollered, I was definitely flattered. We started by jamming once, back in the fall, just came over to the studio, and we did, like, one hour of jamming, which we thought was maybe a half an hour," A-Trak added. "I just started playing records and scratching, and he was playing on top, and it went really, really naturally. It was very fluid. And we stopped and looked at the watch, and it was like, 'Oh, we've been playing for an hour and didn't even realize it.' And I think that solidified for both of us in our minds that we could do this pretty easily."

The duo will perform versions of each other's remixes (they've reworked tracks for everyone from Eminem and Soulja Boy Tell'em to MSTRKRFT and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs), plus new material they've been working on in Barker's Los Angeles studio. Or, at least, that's the plan right now.

"It's going to be a mix of everything," A-Trak said. "We're still kind of rehearsing it, but I think it's going to be some songs people recognize, some of the remixes Travis has done, some of my remixes. Just kind of mix it up."

Barker said the duo plan to start small, with the pair of shows at Hollywood's Roxy Theatre, before taking the show wide. Additional shows will follow later in March in Las Vegas, Austin's South by Southwest and Miami.

"Our first shows are at the Roxy, and then South by Southwest will probably be a little bit bigger," Barker said. "The Winter Music Conference in Miami will probably be a little bit bigger. But the first ones will be really intimate."

"We might do a run of side shows in health clubs and saunas," A-Trak laughed. "Just set up in the steam bath and play. It was an idea we had yesterday."

Tickets go on sale Thursday. The show will kick off with Rob Roy and Kid Sister before Barker and A-Trak take the stage.

Michael Lynche, Didi Benami, More Make 'American Idol' Top 24

Katelyn Epperly, Lee Dewyze and others also make the cut.

Another episode has gone past, and the country's vision of its next "American Idol" is becoming a bit clearer. On tonight's show, seven contestants officially made the cut into the top 24, and from talented future superstars to earnest underdogs to overachieving rookies, the eyes of the world are now upon them.

Here's our breakdown of the names announced tonight:

Michael Lynche - A big man with a big heart, Michael is a new father with new hopes for superstardom thanks to his "Idol" success. Blessed with great guitar-playing skills to go along with his voice, Michael's story isn't without scandal — reports indicate that , his father has spoken with the press, and in doing so committed a major "Idol" no-no. Will it result in his disqualification?

Katelyn Epperly - Boasting a beautiful smile and bouncy blond hair, Katelyn has been performing in public since she was knee-high to a grasshopper. The product of a broken home, this Des Moines student brought the house down with Duffy's "Syrup & Honey" — and is now looking at a future that seems mighty sweet.

Didi Benami - Inspired by her deceased friend Rebecca, Didi also plays guitar and is somewhat reminiscent of Season 7 contestant Brooke White in both skill-set and emotional nakedness. If she continues to make the cut, look forward to lots of tears — and perhaps a sponsorship deal with Kleenex.

Casey James - The chicks dig him. He's a bad boy with a murky past — 'nuff said.

Aaron Kelly - Our own Jim Cantiello calls him "Countryleta" and, sure enough, this 16-year-old high school student has the potential to be a country version of David Archuleta. The judges love a great story, and it's hard to beat his: Adopted by his aunt after his parents could no longer care for him, Aaron won the "American Idol Experience" at Disney World and got a boost to the executive-producer round. Sounds like a true Cinderella story, from the very studio that gave us the big-screen tale.

Lee Dewyze - Considered a dark horse, the guitar-playing balladeer with the sensitive eyes and poor man's Mike Nesmith wool cap has solid stage presence and is intent to do "good things" in music. Is he a sleeping giant? We'll find out soon enough.

Todrick Hall - A pal of Fantasia's, he worked with her on "The Color Purple" and is now turning hundreds of cast-away wannabes the color green — with envy. "I'm a dancer, that's what I've been trained to do," Hall has explained. "I've never had a voice lesson in my entire life, so for me to be competing with these people is just a crazy overwhelming experience."

Semi Precious Weapons Remember When Lady Gaga Opened For Them

Long before Lady Gaga had the Semi Precious Weapons open for her on her Monster Ball Tour, she was supposed to hit the road with Kanye West. So the glam-rock trio might owe West a "thank you" for deciding not to tour with Gaga.

"She had us open for her," lead singer Justin Tranter, who makes a cameo in Gaga's forthcoming "Telephone" video, told MTV News. "We knew that she always wanted us to open for her for this tour. She put her foot down. I don't care what anybody says, we pretty much owe our lives to Gaga."

"And Kanye," bandmate Cole Whittle jokingly added.

Semi Precious Weapons go back years with Gaga — all the way back to the days when she had to depend on them to fill the tiny Manhattan venues she used to play long before she was the Grammy-winning phenom she is today.

"When we met her, we were doing shows here bringing, like, 300 people or so, and we were looking for bands to open for us," Whittle recalled. "They were all boring, but she was fun and partied, and her and [Gaga's performing partner] Lady Starlight had a really cool show. We were like, 'I'd much rather see this than some hipster band.' "

So they opted to do the upcoming pop star a favor and have her join them for their shows. Despite the fact that she was playing to very small crowds, she was beyond thankful for the spot.

"She was big fans of ours before we met her. She was so grateful to be playing with us, 'cause she loved us so much," Tranter said. "She was like, 'I've never seen so many people! Thank you so much for letting me open.' It's obviously a little different now. Them tables have turned! [Back then,] it was still the most awesome thing we'd ever seen. It's still the most awesome show we ever saw. She's always been the coolest girl!"

Jason Derulo Says Mentor Kara DioGuardi Trusts Him To 'Take The Reins'

'She's been there through this entire process,' he says of the 'American Idol' judge.

With his self-titled debut album hitting stores March 2, Jason Derülo admits that he owes a big thank you to "American Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi. Derülo isn't some "Idol" reject who got advice from DioGuardi during audition rounds of the show; his relationship with the hitmaking songwriter actually goes a bit more personal than that.

"Kara DioGuardi is my baby mama," he joked to MTV News about the singer/songwriter, who moonlights as Warner Bros. Records senior vice president of A&R. "Nah! She took a part in kind of discovering me. [Producer] J.R. Rotem brought me to her, and they put the deal together. She's been there through this entire process."

Record execs can be very meddlesome in the creative process, but Derülo said DioGuardi is very nurturing. "She's never once tried to butt in, 'cause she's an amazing songwriter," he said. "She's never tried to butt in or change me at all. She's trusting me to take the reins on this whole thing."

DioGuardi might not be intruding, but it is her job to dole out advice to musicians. Derülo said her advice for him is much different than the advice she gives out on "Idol."

"Giving advice to me and giving advice to someone who's really, really new at this [is different]," he said. "I mean, I've been doing this my whole life, and I have a songwriting background. The advice she gives me is much different. She's the same sweetheart behind the scenes as she is on Idol."

Eminem And Jay-Z Should Rock Cowboys Stadium, Jerry Jones Says

While most members of the Mixtape Daily family are big fans of the Dallas Cowboys' rivals (Shaheem rolls with the G-Men for life, J-Rod loves the Eagles, and Rahman bleeds Jets green), we have to give it up to owner Jerry Jones and the Cowboys Stadium. The massive, breathtaking, suspended hi-def screen alone sets it apart from the pack.

We won't get too sentimental about spending NBA All-Star Weekend there, but we did get a chance to catch up with Jerry at Jay-Z and LeBron James' "Two Kings Dinner & Afterparty." The owner of America's Team recalled giving Eminem a tour of the palatial venue when Mr. Mathers attended the Cowboys vs. Chargers game in December.

"We, of course, are great fans and were tickled to death to have that kind of interest," Jones said of Em coming to the stadium.

Jones said we might eventually see a huge rap show at the stadium, which could hold well over 100,000 fans for a concert, and he thinks Em or Jay-Z would be perfect to pack the venue. "Those are the kinds of stars or the kinds of individuals that people are so interested in seeing," he said. "We've got a venue there that can show them and their skills and talent. We could put a crowd in there to watch them."

"I'm here [playing Dallas] in a couple of weeks, actually," Jay-Z said when asked about Jones' comments. "I'm not playing the big stadium, but one day."

Meanwhile, Jones said he got the feeling Em was interested in rocking Cowboys Stadium. "I believe he was thinking of how it would sound in there for him to be involved [for a concert]," Jones said of Eminem's tour of the venue.

Cowboys Stadium hosted the 2010 NBA All-Star game this past Sunday, which broke the record for attendance with more than 108,000 fans.

"[Dallas Mavericks owner] Mark Cuban initiated the idea as we were building the stadium," Jones said about how the All-Star game ended up in Dallas. "I dreamed of having a basketball game in there — basketball or soccer. A chance to do the All-Star game was a dream come true. It's been great working with [NBA commissioner] David Stern. It's been great working with Mark with what we're doing. ... I've been out there spending most of my time watching them construct the setting for the game. The NBA hasn't spared anything making it special for the fans."

Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From the Underground

It's been quite the wait for DJ Drama and Fabolous' The Funeral Service: There Is No Competition 2. First, the Gangsta Grillz presentation got pushed back from Christmas because of Fab's show schedule. Then, Fab decided to hold the tape up a few more weeks after the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti. While his tape has nothing to do with what happened in Haiti, the Brooklyn native wasn't going to release a mixtape with the title The Funeral with so many in mourning worldwide. Then Fab decided to put a few more songs on the tape.

We spoke to DJ Drama on Monday night, and he said Fab was in ATL with him, in the lab finishing up, and the mixtape could be out within the next week. Drama's Gangsta Grillz schedule is stacking up quite nicely. He and Cam'ron are making another mixtape, he and Yo Gotti also have a tape that will be going into production soon and, of course, there's Trap or Die 2. Dram said he hasn't heard any music from TOD collaborator Young Jeezy but is eagerly anticipating what the Snowman is going to come up with, just like the rest of us.

On Sunday, Dram and Chris Brown released the mixtape In My Zone. C. Breezy's tape is more of an underground street album than a regular tape. There are a lot of new and unreleased songs rather than freestyles. But one freestyle in particular that has people talking is Brown's take on Trey Songz's "I Invented Sex."

"A lot of people weren't expecting the project to be in this direction," Drama said. "It's really an album. His fans are happy. Even the doubters had to come in, sh-- is crazy. It's grown. It's definitely grown music.

"To me, good music is good music," Dram added about Chris' take on Songz's hit. "I've always been a supporter of quality music. Chris is a grown-ass man. It's topics that's grown men speak on. ... A lot of the music, if it was to come out in stores, it would have an explicit rating. But homie's grown up."

'American Idol' Unveils Seven Top-24 Contenders, Including Casey James, Michael Lynche

Posted: 16 Feb 2010 08:03 AM PST

The rest of the semifinalists will be revealed on Wednesday's show.

Tens of thousands of potential "American Idol" winners became 181 Hollywood Week hopefuls who were then considered, criticized and often condemned until 71 singers gained passage to the next round at Los Angeles' Kodak Theatre. Tuesday night's (February 16) show saw that number winnowed once again as the first crooners of the top 24 were announced by Simon Cowell and his fellow "Idol" judges.

Early notable contestants Casey James (he of the shirtless Denver audition), Michael "Big Mike" Lynche (the hulking guy who skipped the birth of his child in favor of a stay at Hollywood Week) and Didi Benami (who sang Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" in memory of her deceased best friend) all made the top 24. Joining them were dancer-turned-singer Todrick Hall, curly-haired Duffy-ite Katelyn Epperly, high-schooler Aaron Kelly and singer-songwriter Lee Dewyze.

The fates of early favorites like 17-year-old Katie Stevens (tipped by Kara DioGuardi as a possible champ), Andrew Garcia (the acoustic impressario of "Straight Up" renown) and Crystal Bowersox (she of the blond dreads and the soulful growl) were left up in the air until Wednesday's show, when the rest of the top 24 will be announced.

With the reality-show circus of the audition rounds and the manufactured drama of group day behind us, one could not be faulted in thinking Tuesday's episode would focus, finally, on the music. Yet the show oddly skipped over nearly the entire round of tunes — as contestants sang for the first time with a backing band — in favor of 10- or 15-second flashes of a chosen few contestants. The result was an overall disjointed viewing experience, denying us true insight into everyone's performances and leaving us frustratingly detached from the tension of the elimination. For all the actual music "Idol" producers aired, the show rightfully should have lasted as long as a network sitcom rather than the two-hour snoozefest Fox offered up as entertainment.

What little we did see veered from the enticing to the forgettable. Casey James did his cowboy-cool singer-songwriter thing with a cover of Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly" and 19-year-old Siobhan Magnus came out of her shell of shyness during a lively version of Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City." Crystal Bowersox hauled out the harmonica for a powerful take on Sheryl Crow's "If It Makes You Happy." Coming off his funky rejiggering of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up," Andrew Garcia stuck with the female artists as he busted out Adele's "Chasing Pavements" competently, if considerably less memorably.

Meanwhile Alex Lambert flubbed a ukulele-driven channeling — a la Jason Castro — of Jason Mraz, and both Jermaine Sellers and Thaddeus Johnson found themselves struggling to stay on the same page with the band. Mom-rocker Mary Powers' rendition of Katy Perry's "Hot n Cold" had Simon saying, by way of the most backhanded of compliments, "I think she's interesting because she's old."

As all this action zipped by at a frenzied pace, the contestants bided their time in one of three holding rooms and the judges traded photos of them in an attempt to cull their choices. One of the rooms, we were teased all episode, would be eliminated. To begin, judges visited room one, which housed Casey James, Lilly Scott, Katie Stevens and Siobhan Magnus. After a not particularly convincing bit of you-might-be-going-home misdirection, Ellen DeGeneres announced, "Ya'll are going through!"

Room two was not as lucky — when it was Simon's turn to deliver the verdict, he told singers like Mary Powers, Charity Vance and Hope Johnson, "It's bad news. You haven't made it."

The judges then popped over to room three to let those contestants — among them Janell Wheeler, Ashley Rodriguez and Shelby Dressel — that they were still in the running for the coveted top 24. "It's really hard to tell you this, but you guys are going to stay," DioGuardi said.

At the end of this round of elimination, 46 contestants were left sweating it out. They wouldn't have another chance to flex their vocal cords — rather, the judges gathered onstage at the Kodak to call each singer one by one for a face-to-face elimination round. The question of why the show had to have two rounds of elimination on Tuesday — stretching the show to two hours instead of one — should hardly need to be answered after nine seasons of "Idol."

In all, seven of the top 24 singers were announced. While Big Mike was called onstage first and made the cut, reports indicate he has in fact been booted from the competition after his father was said to have broken the show's confidentiality agreement. Didi Benami and Kaitlin Epperly, the second and third contestants brought in front of the judges, became the first and second women to make it through to the top 24. Casey James sauntered up in a paisley button-down and bounded away a fist-pumping, Kara-hugging member of the semifinalists. Sixteen-year-old shy guy Aaron Kelly battled through ups and downs during Hollywood Week but ended the night on a high note. Lee Dewyze, accused by Simon of having no charisma, nonetheless convinced the judges he had the confidence to go far this season. Only two singers were sent home: Shelby Dressel (who suffers from partial paralyzation of her face) and two-time Hollywood Week bootee Jessica Furney.

The remaining 17 contenders in the top 24 will be revealed on Wednesday. "The drama continues tomorrow night," as Ryan Seacrest put it at show's end, just before the screen flashed to an image of a closed bathroom stall behind which a heartbroken contestant had fled to bawl his eyes out.

Lady Gaga might have won all three Brit Awards she was nominated for Tuesday (February 16), but it was her avant-garde tribute and performance to late friend and British fashion icon Alexander McQueen that stole the show.

The star took to the stage in all white and sat at her piano before kicking off her performance with an acoustic version of her song "Telephone." "This is for Alexander McQueen," she told the crowd. The stage was decked out in white, and perched on a pedestal was a statue of what seemed to be Gaga wearing a piano skirt and the now-famous McQueen lobster-claw heels she wore in her "Bad Romance" video.

She then got up from her piano as the disco groove of "Dance in the Dark" boomed throughout the room. In her lace bodysuit and over-the-top bouffant wig, she took to a giant keytar and dazzled the crowd with a techno rendition of the track. She then listed off names of fallen icons like Sylvia Plath and Judy Garland.

The pop star arrived to the show dressed in a white dress and the same wig she wore onstage later that night. According to reports, Gaga retooled her whole performance to pay tribute to McQueen at the show.

She later tweeted, "Tonight's performance is inspired by our friend. Mask by Phillip Treacy, Sculpture by Nick Knight, Music by Lady Gaga. We miss you."

Last week, after news broke about McQueen's death, she tweeted a photo of the two of them as a tribute to her late friend.

DALLASAlicia Keys recently teamed with fellow female powerhouse Beyoncé to film the video for "Put It in a Love Song" in Brazil. Some local fans posted video footage online, in which we see Keys giving a performance in the streets.

A plethora of photos were also put on AliciaKeysDaily.com, showing A.Keys and B dressed up in festive dresses, also in the streets. On Sunday, during the NBA All-Star Game at Cowboys Stadium, Alicia talked about the latest release from her The Element of Freedom LP.

"Shooting 'Put It in a Love Song' in Rio, in Brazil, was very incredible," Keys said. "I feel that the energy of the city matches the energy of the song. It's sensual, it's exciting, it's so rich with color. I loved it. The people came out so heavy and so hard. I think it was exciting, especially to participate and experience it with them like that. Me and B have a great relationship. And to be able to have the chemistry we have and do it in a city that's so unique like that is unforgettable. The pictures speak a thousand words. So you saw the energy out there. It was great."

On Sunday, Keys performed for more than 108,000 people at the stadium, a new attendance record for any NBA game. The singer did a medley of her hits: "Empire State of Mind," "Sleeping With a Broken Heart" and "No One."

"It is a grand stage," Keys said of the mini-set. "It's really exciting. I'm a personal fan of championship-style games where the best are playing. It's exciting, and I love that. Also to be able to perform on a stage like this and a venue like this, people are excited. They're here to have a great time, and so I'm glad that on Valentine's Day, I'm able to bring a little love in the building. So it's gonna be beautiful."

Hov says he has no release date in mind for his next LP, in Mixtape Daily.
By Shaheem Reid

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

Apologies for being a little late with Mixtape Daily: We're fresh off the plane from NBA All-Star Weekend. We couldn't script the problems we had getting to Dallas (with all the flight cancellations), but we made it and D-Town was a movie. Big up to Play N Skillz for rolling out the red carpet and a special thanks to Ahyiana Deldridge and the entire NBA PR team for all the help and access (we were on the court with all the NBA All-Stars!). Normally, on Tuesdays Mixtape features "Don't Sleep," but we interrupt our regularly scheduled programming for a special message from Jigga. During the red carpet for his and LeBron James' "Two Kings Dinner and Afterparty," presented by Bing and Sprite, we got Jay-Z to tell us a little bit about his new LP.

However, don't expect it any time soon. Just like last year when we asked him about Blueprint 3, Hov said he doesn't have a release date in mind. (Back in September, he told MTV News that his next album will be the "most experimental" he's ever made.)

"I don't know," he said on Saturday when asked about a release date for his next LP. "I didn't really start yet. I got a couple of scraps and I got a couple of ideas. I didn't really go into the studio yet. I've been toying with ideas and direction and things like that.

"I got one crazy record," he added. "To be honest with you, it's crazy. I got one and we'll build from there. Whether it comes out this year or next year, it depends on the music and how it's coming out. I don't really have any dates."

In the past few months, we've seen Jay perform at the World Series, open up the Super Bowl with a performance video, team up with Rihanna and members of U2 for the Haiti benefit song "Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour)," and during NBA All-Star weekend, he definitely had one of the biggest and anticipated parties. This weekend he starts another leg of his Blueprint 3 tour and this summer he headlines the Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee. Seemingly Jay is everywhere, and it's all serving as a muse for the music.

"The world is inspiring me," he said. "I get out and see the world and more of the world is accepting of our music and what we do. I'm just inspired by the whole thing and how big hip-hop can be and how much of a phenomenon it is. You couldn't imagine hip-hop being at the World Series. I touched the championship trophy before A-Rod and the Vince Lombardi trophy before the Saints. You couldn't imagine that happening 10 years ago. How about five years ago? I'm saying that to say that the journey hip-hop has taken and we are right now, there's no imitation to it ... still. Still!"

It's Lady Gaga's world — we're all just living in it. As if fans needed any more proof, the shape-shifting songstress swept the Brit Awards on Tuesday (February 16), taking charge of the U.K.'s high-profile music ceremony while winning three key categories — and paying touching tribute to fashion icon Alexander McQueen.

Considered by many to be the British equivalent of the Grammys, more than 1,000 industry insiders vote for the Brit Awards. In addition to Gaga, the evening's big winners included Jay-Z, Lily Allen and Oasis — who received a special honor as their (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was named best British album of the last 30 years.

The big story of the evening, however, was Gaga. Nominated three times, the "Poker Face" singer swept her three categories, taking home Best International Album, Best International Female Solo Artist and International Breakthrough Act Supported by MTV Viewers.

As expected, Lady Gaga stole the show with a daring outfit, performing in a Marge Simpson-height white wig and lace veil, accented by lace eyebrows. Less predictable, however, was her heartfelt words for one of the men who helped her become such an outrageous style icon. "Thank you to Lee McQueen," Gaga said with a strained voice at one point, referring to the fashion designer whose lobster-clawed shoes adorned her feet in the "Bad Romance" music video. McQueen was found dead in his London home last Thursday.

Of particular interest to American audiences might be the International Male Solo Artist category, which had Jay-Z triumphing over fellow heavyweights Eminem and Bruce Springsteen. The Brits also handed out special awards honoring the past 30 years, celebrating best album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, and best hit song, the Spice Girls' "Wannabe/Who Do You Think You Are."

Winners that may be of less interest to Americans include Florence & the Machine (British Female Solo Artist, MasterCard British Album), Dizzee Rascal (British Male Solo Artist), JLS (British Breakthrough Act, British Single), Kasabian (British Group), Elle Goulding (Critics' Choice) and Robbie Williams (Outstanding Contribution Award). Lily Allen, in an orange wig, took home the Best British Female trophy. "This doesn't happen to me very often," she admitted. "So thank you very much. I love you."
