Before Taylor Swift won the Grammy for Album of the Year, before she stepped onstage with rock legend Stevie Nicks, before the 20-year-old country star even walked inside the Staples Center on Sunday night (January 31), she'd already won big.

In wins announced before the start of the show, Swift nabbed victories in two categories. When MTV News caught up with Swift at the start of the evening, she was already having trouble processing the significance of those wins.

"I'm so excited. I can't believe it," she said. "Whenever I used to write with people in Nashville and I would go into their houses and they had Grammys on their pianos or something like that, I'd always walk over and stare at them and have conversations with them, these little Grammy Awards. I can't believe I get to have two of them now."

By the night's end, she'd add two more Grammys to her growing collection, from eight total nominations. Her Album of the Year win came as something of a surprise, given Beyoncé's strong showing throughout the show (the R&B singer finished up with six trophies). The breathless Swift took the stage and thanked her family watching back in Nashville.

During her chat with MTV News, Swift also took the time to thank her fans for supporting her all year. "What I'd like to say to you guys is that I appreciate it so much, everything that you do," she said. "You go out and you buy tickets to my shows and buy the albums, and I am just so happy tonight."

The 2010 Grammy Awards may be over, but MTV News will have much, much more from the show, including reports on your favorite nominees, party photos, behind-the-scenes video and much more from the big show!

Grammy Night Belongs To Beyonce And Taylor Swift

Performances from Lady Gaga and Elton John, Pink, the Black Eyed Peas and others steal the show.

There were plenty of over-the-top moments during Sunday night's (January 31) 52nd annual Grammy Awards, but none of them could outshine Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.

Yes, the dynamic duo — who were nominated for a combined 16 Grammy Awards — took home 10 of them, with Beyoncé winning six, including Song of the Year, and Swift snagging four, including the night's biggest trophy, Album of the Year.

"I hope that you know how much this means to me ... that we get to take this back to Nashville!" Swift squealed while accepting the Album of the Year award. "Our families are freaking out in their living rooms! My dad and my little brother are losing their minds in our living room right now!"

Swift's three other Grammys came in the country category, with Fearless winning Best Country Album and her hit "White Horse" grabbing Best County Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Beyoncé's haul was spread out across many categories. Her ubiquitous "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" won three Grammys, for Song of the Year, Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. "Halo" won for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance, and her version of Etta James' "At Last" took home the award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.

"This has been such an amazing night for me," B said while accepting her Best Female Pop award. "I'd like to thank my family, including my husband [Jay-Z, just in case anyone didn't know]. I love you."

Following close behind Beyoncé and Swift were a pair of artists who won three Grammys, including Jay-Z (Best Rap Solo Performance, Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration) and the Kings of Leon, who shocked many (but not us) when their "Use Somebody" took home Record of the Year, a win they were definitely in the mood to celebrate.

"We're a little drunk, but we're happy drunk," Kings drummer Nathan Followill laughed while accepting the award, before rattling off a lengthy "thank you" list. "If there's anyone else I forgot; I'll buy you shots later."

Later in the telecast, while accepting the Grammy for Best Rock Album, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong sounded like he was looking to party too, signing off with, "And now, I'm gonna have shots with Kings of Leon!"

Also in the mood to celebrate: the Black Eyed Peas, who won three Grammys (one for Best Short Form Music Video); Eminem, who took home two awards; and Lady Gaga, who won two of her own (though both were during the pre-televised ceremony).

But for all the award-accepting merriment, it was the performances that shined brightest on this Grammy night. Or at least they shined the loudest. Show producers gave out only a handful of awards during the actual telecast, deciding to focus instead on the talents they had assembled inside the Staples Center, and that talent delivered, with one massive spectacle after the next.

Lady Gaga kicked off the show with a theatrical version of "Poker Face" — which featured a steam-powered set dubbed "The Fame Factory," some flames and a pair of seriously sparkly shoulder pads — then welcomed Elton John to the stage for a dueling-piano take on Gaga's "Speechless" (and a few bars of the John/ Bernie Taupin classic "Your Song"). And, in keeping with the rather flamboyant nature of both artists, show producers made sure their conjoined piano was topped with severed mannequin arms.

It was a pretty epic opening, but Beyoncé didn't back down from the challenge. She stormed into Staples with an army of riot-gear-clad escorts, then got down to belting out a fiery version of "If I Were a Boy," complete with a shredding backing band and a brief foray into Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know." She wrapped up her performance by channeling her inner Tina Turner, dropping to her knees and singing for the rafters. By the time B had gotten to her feet, so had the audience, who showered her with applause.

Pink got aerial (and soaking wet) during her performance of "Glitter in the Air," which saw her wrapped in linen, sent soaring above the crowd at Staples, then dipped into a pool of water. The Black Eyed Peas rattled the roof with a booming medley of their hits, which featured a battalion of electric-clad dancers, Fergie donning her Robocop finest and Will.I.Am rocking an inexplicable black molding of his head on his head. Green Day offered a preview of their American Idiot musical, featuring members of the cast. And Lil Wayne, Eminem, Drake and Travis Barker roared versions of Weezy's "Drop the World" and D's "Forever," though, judging by the frequent audio drops, it would seem the network censors got a little too anxious with the "delay" button.

There was also a 3-D tribute to the late Michael Jackson, which featured Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, Smokey Robinson and Jennifer Hudson performing Jackson's "Earth Song," while 3-D images played around them (and featured unintentionally comical shots of stars like Rihanna, Beyoncé and Will.I.Am wearing their 3-D glasses in the audience). It will probably be remembered best for what happened next, as two of Jackson's children — son Prince and daughter Paris — accepted an honorary lifetime-achievement award in their father's memory.

"I want to thank the fans, our father loved you so much," Prince said, his voice wavering slightly. "We will continue to spread his message and help the world."

"Daddy was going to be here; he was going to perform this year, [because] he couldn't perform last year," his daughter Paris added. "Thank you. We love you, Daddy."

It was an emotional moment in a night largely bereft of them, though the Dave Matthews Band's stirring performance of "You & Me," and Wyclef's from-the-heart speech about his native Haiti — in which he spoke in Creole and thanked the world for their support, before adding, "We will continue" — did manage to tug on the heartstrings. But this night will probably be best remembered for Beyoncé and Swift's dominance, not to mention the sheer spectacle of the performances, which proved that even in dour times, the music industry knows how to throw a party — a massive, eye-popping, over-the-top one at that.

The 2010 Grammy Awards may be over, but MTV News will have much, much more from the show, including reports on your favorite nominees, party photos, behind-the-scenes video and much more from the big show!

Eminem Told Drake 'Don't Get Nervous' About Grammy Performance

"I think it's a great night for hip-hop," Drake said at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards on Sunday (January 31). "Just that medium being acknowledged at all."

The 23-year-old Canadian, himself acknowledged with two nominations, also had a great night — he got to close the show with the first-ever live performance of "Forever," joining Lil Wayne and Eminem on the Grammy stage. And while Drake is certainly used to rocking stages with his Young Money boss Weezy, he got some surprising encouragement from Slim Shady during rehearsals.

"Em gave me probably one of the best speeches ... not really a speech, but ... he gave me that reassurance," Drake said on the red carpet. "He was like, 'Man, anytime you need to look over at me, don't get nervous. Just look over at me, man, and I'll give it back to you. Everything will be all right. Don't be nervous.' For him to say that to me — I feel like that was an important moment. It was nice."

One glaring omission from "Forever," though, was the appearance of Kanye West. The Louis Vuitton Don is apparently back in the lab.

"I think 'Ye's in a good creative space right now," Drizzy said of his absence. "I think he's trying to create that next album the world needs. I know he's working very hard somewhere."

During the medley, Lil Wayne and Eminem also performed "Drop the World" from Wayne's Rebirth album, in stores Tuesday.

Lupe Fiasco's Enemy Of The State Inspired By MTV's 'Hottest MCs' List

'Y'all sit at that table, and y'all forget who I am,' he tells Mixtape Daily of our Hip-Hop Brain Trust.

In January, MTV News gave you Pop Week and Rock Week (Jimmy Mont: The beard is rad!) — now it's our turn. It's Hip-Hop and R&B Week. What more can you say about that, except check for the most exclusive of exclusives. Like this one. We were originally supposed to do Lupe's Mixtape Daily segment at some point last year, but his schedule got crazy, ours was nutty, then he climbed that mountain. Major accomplishment, Lupe. Well, last week, the homie came to NY, humble as ever, confident in his rhymes as ever, and we got it done. As you'll read below, the Mixtape Daily family played a hand in inspiring the tape. How real is that?

This Week's Main Pick

Street King: Lupe Fiasco

Holding It Down For: Chicago

Mixtape: Enemy of the State: A Love Story

Real Spit: "I had mad titles," Lupe Fiasco said with a grin when talking about his Enemy of the State: A Love Story mixtape. "I was gonna call it Brain. I had mad titles. But it was fitting, especially going into Lasers and what Lasers stands for, which is chaos, anarchy, rebelling against the system, doing you, individuality. When you do that, you become an enemy to the status quo, you become an enemy of the state. So it stuck, it fit. There we go. It wasn't from the [Will Smith] movie. I feel like I'm the enemy of the state of hip-hop right now. Because what I'm finnin' to be is so against what's going on."

Lupe's tape was tapped as one of the best of 2009. He became inspired to put it together by seeing our 2009 Hottest MCs in the Game list. Fiasco made the 2008 top 10 but was left off last year, chiefly because he didn't have any current material.

"That's y'all," Lupe said about the muse for his tape. "Y'all sit at that table, and y'all forget who I am. It's like, 'That's cool. I been through this before.' "

He made Enemy of the State in just 48 hours. "It was super easy. I did it in two days," he detailed. "Lasers was almost all done. I said, 'Let me go out here.' 'Cause I knew none of that was on Lasers. Just the super 'I'm the best MC' — lyrical — there's wasn't really room for that on this album. I was like, 'Let me give my fans that. Let me let them know that I'm still capable of that. Let me show MTV I'm hot too.' Kept it short. I felt, if you're nice, you don't need an hour. You don't need one hour and 35 minutes. You don't need 100 freestyles every week. You need a nice demonstration of what you're capable of doing very effectively, and you step back. Leave you wanting more. Sometimes the best part of the movie is the trailer."

Lasers comes out later this year.

Joints to Check For

» "Say Something." "It's just certain records that should be yours," Lupe said. "Wayne should have 'A Milli.' It should have been his song. It's certain records that fit an MC and what he does, and the instant you hear him, it starts to go. There's certain beats that don't do that. There's certain beats MCs shouldn't have. That's just me stuntin', sorry. I heard the track. I hadn't even heard Drake or [Timbaland's] song 'Say Something.' I didn't even know what was going on. I just heard the beat and 'Say Something,' the freestyle came out. I could have kept going. I could have rapped over that for 20 minutes."

» "Turnt Up." "I went to Atlanta and was asking my homeboy, I said, 'What's the hottest record in Atlanta?' He said Waka Flocka ['O Let's Do It'] and [Travis Porter's] 'All the Way Turnt Up.' He played the beat. I said, 'What?!?' Same thing too. I hadn't heard the song, I heard the beat and said, 'I need to destroy this properly.' You know when the Chinese circus comes to town and they just wilding, doing mad flips and unnecessary extraordinary things? That's how I look at it. No holds barred. It ain't about having no hooks. I ain't gotta prove no points. It ain't gotta show no purpose. It's a demonstration of skill. When I get into that zone, I ain't really gotta write nothing down. It's like, 'Let's go.' "

» "Yoga Flame." "The Lil Wayne 'Fireman,' tracks speak to you. I was just like, 'I need to speak back to it. This one is calling me.' I was going to do the 'Compton City G's' beat. I said, 'Let me not get on something too old.' [The name] 'Yoga Flame' came from the engineer. He went in and got the jawn. That's just a demonstration of what I'm capable of at 11 p.m. at night. No sleep."

Maino Tries To 'Keep It Moving' Amid Personal Turmoil

Posted: 01 Feb 2010 03:50 AM PST

During Hip-Hop and R&B Week, the MC talks about balancing fame with his personal struggles.
By Shaheem Reid

If you're a fan of Maino's and you see that brother in the street or in the club and show him love, believe it or not, it means more to him than you know. Maino is one of the MCs you could call a man of the people, and his followers give him strength. While his career seems to be on a serious upswing (street credibility, platinum single, acclaim from critics), personally, he's felt serious pain over the past year.

In the spring, his best friend 80 was shot by police, and just last week, he had to bury his cousin.

"I'm really going through it," Maino said last week. "Even right now, my closest cousin committed suicide. He's been on the road with me. You probably seen me with him. His funeral is tomorrow. This is what I'm saying. You get in the game, you think you escape all this. This is not a distant relative of mine. This is my closest cousin. We grew up together. My mother and his mother are sisters. Just thinking about that and going through that while I'm trying to attain fame and this lifestyle, it's two worlds. One side, everything is all good. On my personal, it's really not. My cousin was just here; now he's not. The circumstances behind him doing whatever he felt he needed to do, I can't really understand. [Entertainers] take the bumps and bruises and keep moving. We grieve, we pick up, and we try to keep it moving."

Maino has a slew of shows coming up, and he's promoting two projects. There's an EP called Unstoppable dropping Tuesday, and his second full-length LP is coming this summer.

"It's almost like no time to grieve," he said about the life of an entertainer. "What are you gonna do? What am I gonna tell MTV: 'I can't do an interview. I'm going through something in my personal life. Everybody in my family is crying right now'? You still gotta work, you still gotta achieve, you still gotta win. Under no circumstances do we stop for one minute. This is the theme of my new album — really giving it up and showing you what a person really goes through to get to that point. I was starving to get here. Now that I'm here, it's like, man, it's not what I thought it would be. It's not really that good. It's great, but personally, you go through things regular people go through.

"That's just how life is," he added. "Especially when God blesses us and puts us in a position where we have to deal with adversity. It's crazy that my best friend, my childhood friend, my business partner [80] was paralyzed. He's still in prison. I speak to him every day. Right after that, my other homie was paralyzed. Homie is in and out of prison. It's still real for me. That's why when they see me in the streets, they understand the pain that I'm in is the same as there's. 'Maino, what up? You reppin' for us.' I still try to fight that fight and keep it as thorough as possible."

The Brooklyn, New York, native said he does struggle as his fame and fortune grows and he sees those close to him suffer.

"Sometimes I ask God, 'Why was I chosen to be in this position?' Me having lived the life I lived, why did he bless me one day and lead me on this path?" Maino asked. "I lived a crazy life, and I've done so much and I've lost so much. Why was I able to turn my life around? At the same time I was able to turn my life around, why wasn't I able to save my people? 'Man, I can't save my people.' I can't save them as fast and as quick as I want to. That's what I go through every day. I'm like, 'I can't save my people, though. I can't save them as quick and fast as I want to. They still suffering.' "

While Main might not have been able to save the few close to him, his messages of hope and overcoming the obstacles have reached the masses. His inspirational "All of the Above" was a platinum single last year. Undoubtedly, somebody who has heard the record was touched by his message.

"I had a conversation with a dude that told me I stopped him from committing suicide," he said. "I said, 'Wow.' I'm glad I was able to help him. This was just through music. That's what music is for. It's the soundtrack to your life."

It's Hip-Hop and R&B Week at MTV News, and we're taking a look at some of the biggest up-and-coming artists and the heavyweights of 2010. Stay tuned all week for more!

Despite Michael Jackson's constant shielding of his children from the spotlight during his lifetime, his kids have proven to be adept at handling their public appearances since their father passed away last year.

Prince and Paris Jackson accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of the late King of Pop at the 2010 Grammy Awards. The pair sported red sashes on their arms to honor MJ and spoke in measured, well-mannered tones as the audience gave them standing ovations. They were joined onstage by a number of their cousins after Lionel Richie introduced the group following a star-studded performance of MJ's "Earth Song."

"We are proud to be here to accept this award on behalf of our father, Michael Jackson," older brother Prince said. "First of all, we'd like to thank God for watching over us for the past seven months. And our grandmother and grandfather for their love and support. We would also like to thank the fans. Our father loved you so much because you were always there for him. Our father was always concerned about the planet and humanity. Through all his hard work and dedication, he's helped with many charities and donated to all of them. Through all his songs his message was simple: love. We will continue to spread his message and help spread the word. Thank you. We love you, Daddy." Prince choked up during his speech but maintained his composure and showed admirable poise while he spoke.

Paris, who delivered a moving speech to her father during the Staples Center memorial service last summer, closed out the speech with a brief, reserved message to her father.

"Daddy was supposed to be here, Daddy was gonna perform this year," she said, keeping her composure. "He couldn't perform last year. Thank you, we love you, Daddy."

Will.I.Am Calls The Black Eyed Peas' Grammy Wins 'Gratifying'

The Black Eyed Peas had a heck of a haul during the 52nd annual Grammy Awards, as the collective nabbed wins for their album (The E.N.D.), their record-breaking single ("I Gotta Feeling") and the video for "Boom Boom Pow."

"It's gratifying," Will.I.Am told MTV News. "Having broken records that you never thought you would break, like 27 weeks at #1 [for 'I Gotta Feeling'], that's like six months. Selling out crazy stadiums with no record stores, and this being the biggest year in your career? It's crazy. 'Cause last album, we sold 12 million records, and going into this record, we were kinda scared about how it would perform, because there's no stores. But we outperformed our last album, and we're still in the middle of it."

The E.N.D. was the Black Eyed Peas' first album since 2003's Elephunk. That project featured an array of hits, including "Let's Get It Started," and kick-started Fergie's solo career. After a break, however, they reunited when Will.I.Am was inspired by a new sound for their then-forthcoming project. The producer took in some nightlife during his time on the set of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and came away with an appreciation for the world of electronica.

"He would always go to those clubs and get influenced by electronic music," BEP member Taboo told MTV News last year. "It's a dance album. It's for people around the world."

The Peas will celebrate their wins — for Best Pop Album, Best Pop Vocal by a Duo or Group and Best Short-Form Video — before they prep for the launch of their world tour, which begins next week in Atlanta.

Ludacris is scheduled to join Will.I.Am and company for a tour that the BEP front man promised would be eye-opening. "Bigger production, things flying and the stage transforming," Will promised.

Aventura Frontman Romeo Santos 'Honored' By Lady Gaga Comparisons

Posted: 01 Feb 2010 03:50 AM PST

'It's definitely an honor to be compared to ... mainstream artists that have done big stuff in New York City,' he says of sold-out four-show run at Madison Square Garden.

NEW YORK — There's been an array of homegrown talent, from Rev. Run of Run-DMC to Marc Anthony to Jay-Z, who could make the claim that Madison Square Garden is their house. Rev. Run even made a song about it back in the day.

But Dominican Bachata group Aventura — all raised in the Bronx — are making a case of their own right now. The quartet is currently in the midst of a four-show run at the Garden, selling out each date and leading local tabloids to laud their feat, particularly over another Gotham act, Lady Gaga, who recently had a successful four-show run at the smaller Radio City Music Hall.

So what do the guys of Aventura think of the lofty praise?

"It's definitely an honor to be compared to artists like Marc Anthony and mainstream artists like Lady Gaga that are out and have done big stuff in New York City," Aventura frontman Anthony "Romeo" Santos told MTV News. "I hate it when they make it a competition though, because it's really totally different worlds. She's doing big things and if I wouldn't have had four concerts I would have probably been at one of her [dates] just enjoying her show."

The collective is touring in support of their fifth album, The Last, which has already spawned four hit singles, from the Akon-assisted "All Up 2 You" to current chart-topper "Dile al Amor." "Dile al Amor" is their fourth song to top the Latin charts.

"It's really overwhelming what's happening right now in Aventura's career," Romeo said. "We don't take anything for granted. I think that it's been a long journey, but we got motivated to keep going and never be satisfied with the status that we're in at the moment."

On Monday and Tuesday (February 1 and 2) the group will complete the New York City leg of their tour. According to Romeo, he and the other three Aventura members (Lenny Santos, Henry Santos Jeter and Max Santos) are looking forward to closing out the run with more surprises. They've been joined by Anthony, Akon and fellow Latin artists Wisin Y Yandel on stage so far.

"We try to make sure that everyone that's present leaves feeling like it was worth it," he said. "And with four nights at the Garden, I feel like we're halfway through and everyone has actually — from what I hear, the comments — left with their money's worth, 'cause we've given [the audience] what they expect but then we also brought some surprises, like Marc Anthony, Akon and Wisin Y Yandel."

Not many people could upstage Jay-Z and Rihanna, but Beyoncé's nephew Julez did just that at Sunday night's (January 31) Grammy Awards.

Solange Knowles' son offered a tepid "No thanks" when Rihanna offered him the microphone at the awards show. The 5-year-old was onstage with Rihanna and Jay after their hit "Run This Town" scored a Grammy win for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Dressed in a dapper tuxedo, Julez delighted the crowd when he was invited to accept the award by his Uncle Hov.

The latest star from the Knowles' clan, Julez was born Daniel Julez Smith Jr. in 2004. He was named after Solange's ex-husband, Daniel Smith, whom the singer married the same year. Julez's first uncredited appearance came courtesy of Destiny's Child when Solange showed off her very pregnant belly in the group's "Soldier" video. He was also the subject of a song on Solange's 2008 album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams titled "An Ode to Julez."

Julez proved to be a cool customer at the Grammy Awards. First, Jay-Z thanked the crowd for his win before he passed the mic off to Rihanna. The singer offered her quick words and turned to Julez. Rihanna picked up the tiny Knowles as she asked him if he had anything he wanted to say. "No thanks," he said sheepishly, drawing laughter from the audience.

His tight-lipped answer earned him a burst of fame and a tweet from his mom, who passed on the festivities. "Julez is going to enjoy seeing that when he's 13," Solange wrote, followed by a smiley-face.

Green Day Say Grammy Win Came At The 'Sweetest Time'

Green Day have been here before. But after winning Best Rock Album at the 2010 Grammy Awards for 21st Century Breakdown, singer Billie Joe Armstrong said this victory was even better than the first time.

"I have to say that this is the sweetest time ... I think just the pressure coming off American Idiot," he said, referring to the first time the veteran punk band took home the honor, for their 2004 concept album. "Then putting out 21st Century Breakdown and getting recognized for it and all the success that it's had, it feels really great."

Armstrong also raved about Lady Gaga's performance with Elton John, which opened Sunday night's Grammy show.

The trio had a rock summit in the press area with Record of the Year winners Kings of Leon, whose three victories made Green Day feel good about the modern state of rock. The members of the groups exchanged handshakes and good wishes in a passing of the torch from one former wild-child act to the next.

"I thinks it's pretty exciting that Kings of Leon won," bassist Mike Dirnt said. "It's good for rock and roll."

As usual, Armstrong said, the band is working on new material, but there's no timetable yet for the follow-up to Breakdown.

"We're always writing songs all the time, but we don't know what, when or where a record's gonna come out. But a couple years down the line, it's gonna get real serious."

As for what's next tonight, drummer Tre Cool was overheard saying, "Drinks."
