LOS ANGELES — The energy was electric Monday night (February 1) at Henson Studios as more than 80 of music's biggest stars gathered for a charity remake of "We Are the World" in support of Haitian earthquake relief.

"I feel like a kid in a candy store," Wyclef Jean said, speaking to the press about the idea of remaking such an iconic song, which is getting production help from RedOne and Will.I.Am. "What's bigger than a contribution is that you lend your voice," the Haitian native said earlier in the day to his peers while trying to inspire them during the session, which began around 3 p.m. and was expected to last well into the night.

Among the voices in the 81-member choir were Pink, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Nick Jonas, LL Cool J, Robin Thicke, Celine Dion, Akon, Rob Thomas, Wyclef, Jeff Bridges, Vince Vaughn, Barbra Streisand, Jordin Sparks, Good Charlotte's Madden brothers, Tony Bennett, Josh Groban, Snoop Dogg, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson, Keri Hilson, Jamie Foxx, Tyrese, Katharine McPhee, Sean Garrett, Will.I.Am, Carlos Santana, Melanie Fiona, Enrique Iglesias, Toni Braxton, Jason Mraz, Miley Cyrus, Busta Rhymes, Nicole Scherzinger, Nicole Richie, Usher, Julianne Hough, Raphael Saadiq, Zac Brown, India.Arie, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson, Musiq Soulchild, Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson, Fonzworth Bentley, Kid Cudi, Iyaz, Bizzy Bone, Nipsey Hussle, the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, Trey Songz, Faith Evans, Mya and Gladys Knight. (At press time, the full list of participants was not yet available.)

Kanye, wearing a red jacket with sparkling gold crisscross accents, stood center in the front row, between Wyclef and Hudson.

Among the soloists whose sessions were screened for journalists at press time were Bieber, Dion and Groban. Weezy also came out and humbly noted that he recorded the solo originally sung by Bob Dylan.

The inspirational lyrics were laid down over a track that had a more modern Southern hip-hop bounce to it. The recording session took place almost 25 years to the day since the original song for African famine relief was recorded.

"The experience was out of this world," said Bieber, who sang Lionel Richie's original opening line. The video for the song, which is being shot in 3-D, will debut February 12.

On Sunday night, millions tuned in to watch Lil Wayne go to work. Weezy, Eminem and Drake illuminated the 52nd annual Grammy Awards with "Drop the World" and "Forever." While he knows how to ignite the stage, Wayne's favorite workplace is still the studio.

Mixtape Daily debuted an exclusive clip last month that showed Weezy F. Baby recording his "Banned From TV" freestyle from the No Ceilings mixtape. Wayne laughs uncontrollably in the clip as he lays lines to the underground gem. In a new exclusive clip, he even does a little dance as he composes lyrics in his head, messes up and regroups. The New Orleans native loves his work.

Stopping by the MTV News offices recently, Swizz Beatz — producer of the official "Banned From TV" track back in 1998 — had the opportunity to hear Wayne's freestyle for the first time and gave it a thumbs-up. "For Wayne to do that in 2010, millions of instrumentals are out," Swizz said. "For him to use 'Banned From TV' and air it out, that's super respect."

Last month, "Banned From TV" rapper Noreaga said Wayne is tops on his list right now. "Wayne is my favorite rapper of the new age," N.O.R.E. told Mixtape Daily. "Although in rap years, he's just as old as me. But that's my favorite rapper for the new age. For him to not only do the joint, but it appear on Mixtape Daily video ... that's an honor. My kids love Lil Wayne. Do 'Super Thug' next, Wayne — keep my legacy alive. ... I'm trying to do Special Ed's 'I Got It Made' and a few other classics over. It's only to give respect to the people. If Wayne is a real MC like I know he is, he was doing it to show love and respect to the joint and what it meant to him. I'm speechless."

As much as the "Banned From TV" track is heralded, Swizz said he's made way better beats than that. "That's probably one of my most simple beats of all time," Swizz said. "That's, like, four sounds.

"I think it's the moment that makes the track one of [my] greatest tracks of all time," the producer added. "I think it's the moment where hip-hop was at that time where you had [Big] Pun, [Jadakiss], Nore and everybody. All those elements make it that. I think as far as instrumentals, it was a'ight."

In the new DVD "The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 2" (in stores and available on DJ Scoob Doo's Web site), you can see more clips of Wayne in the lab as well as in the club and clowning with the Cash Money Millionaires.

It's Hip-Hop and R&B Week at MTV News, and we're taking a look at some of the biggest up-and-coming artists and the heavyweights of 2010. Stay tuned all week for more!

What's Next For Taylor Swift?

With her Album of the Year Grammy win, there's not much the country star hasn't accomplished yet.
By Jocelyn Vena

At the ripe old age of 20, Taylor Swift has accomplished a lot. She's broken chart records, sold millions of albums and won Grammys, VMAs, AMAs and CMAs. She has even launched her own clothing and greeting card lines. There's very little she hasn't accomplished.

And, after Swift's four Grammy wins on Sunday night, including Album of the Year, many fans may be asking: What is next for the country pop superstar? Actually, she's got a whole lot more planned for 2010.

Swift is currently working on a follow-up to her 2008 release, Fearless. She recently tweeted that she's been in the studio with the same crew behind the successful album. "Studio-ness with all the same boys who played on Fearless. Homemade cupcakes were brought. Awkward fist-pumps happened. Onward!" she wrote. "More recording. So excited. So excited. So excited. See, I said that three times. Once for every album we've made in this studio."

In an interview with Rolling Stone, she shared that she's already got a number of songs banked for an album. "I like to have two years in between albums, so if you take Fearless and go forward two years, that's my ideal place to put out the next record, because I think two years of growth and development and feelings and life intake, love intake, emotion output, is my preferred formula for albums right now."

While she told RS that her album is influenced by Keith Urban and John Mayer, it wasn't too long ago that she told MTV News that she'd like to work with Jack White. And anyone who saw her hilarious "T-Swizzle" rap video at the CMT Music Awards last year wouldn't be surprised to see Swift work in a few new genres into her country sound.

In the immediate future, Swift will also be on the road this spring for the second leg of her Fearless tour. And she'll also be seen the big screen in the A-list-filled rom-com, "Valentine's Day," opposite rumored one-time beau Taylor Lautner.

"I got to be sort of the opposite of who I was in high school; my character is pretty superficial," she revealed to MTV News about her role in the film, adding that even with Hollywood calling she has no plans to abandon Nashville. "I do like acting. Music is always going to be number one. Everything in my life, whether it be love or movies or anything, is always going to come behind music. But movies are great, if you're telling the right story. I'm all about telling the right story."

What do you think Taylor Swift should do next? Let us know in the comments below, or upload a video to Your.MTV.com!

The 2010 Grammy Awards may be over, but MTV News will have much, much more from the show, including reports on your favorite nominees, party photos, behind-the-scenes video and much more from the big show!

Lil Wayne Feels 'Blessed' To Be Part Of 'We Are The World' Remake

'After I did Bob Dylan's part, it kind of hit me that I guess this is way more important than I could ever imagine,' Weezy tells MTV News.

LOS ANGELES -- "I've never been involved in anything like this," Lil Wayne said after he recorded his solo for the remake of "We Are the World" on Monday night at the Henson Recording Studios as part of an all-star benefit for Haitian relief. "My attitude coming out is I feel blessed and I feel like I've done something today, and that's always a good day."

With a large roster of rappers in the house for the session -- including Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, LL Cool J, Swizz Beatz, T-Pain, Wyclef Jean, Will.I.Am, Busta Rhymes, Kid Cudi, Drake, Nipsey Hussle, Bizzy Bone, Mann and others -- Wayne said he was glad hip-hop could play such a large part in the sessions, which took place 25 years almost to the day since the first recording. "I was like, 'What am I doing here?' " Wayne joked, revealing that he got to sing the part recorded by folk icon Bob Dylan on the original.

"I was like, 'You guys are real good comedians,' " he laughed. "After I did Bob Dylan's part, it kind of hit me that I guess this is way more important than I could ever imagine."

For his children, Wayne said the opportunity to be involved in such a major undertaking is something they can hold onto forever. As for his mother, he chuckled when he said that all she asked was that he get Gladys Knight's photo for her.

"I'm still overwhelmed," Weezy said, looking around the room at the galaxy of stars that ranged from Pink and Carlos Santana to Usher and Barbra Streisand. "I was like, 'Where do I fit in?' I thought my name got mixed up."

Asked how he approached the Dylan part and whether he sang or rapped it, Wayne said that was an embarrassing story, since he's not known as a singer and he just tried to do his best to make it work. "I don't know how to sing. I approached it the best way I know how, brother," he told a reporter with a smile. When another writer asked whether he did a better job than Dylan, Wayne flashed his diamond-studded grill and said humbly, "Hell no."

Because he lives in Miami, Wayne said he learned firsthand about the devastation in Haiti from his Haitian friends who lost their children in the earthquake. "Before I go," the New Orleans native added as he left the press area, "I think it's amazing what's been done for Haiti ... but I also think it's amazing what hasn't been done for New Orleans."

Jay-Z, Kanye West Producer No ID Will Become A Household Name In 2010

The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

Production legend No ID may not have a name as commercially recognizable as a Swizz Beatz or a Timbaland, but he's one of the all-time greats. No has laced all your favorites from Usher and Fabolous to Twista and Kanye West — and, most recently, his Grammy-winning turn with Jay-Z for "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)."

No seems destined to make 2010 his breakthrough year, with upcoming tracks for Kanye West and a man he began collaborating with almost 20 years ago, Common. Jay-Z's Roc Nation MC, J. Cole has also called upon the Chicago veteran to sprinkle his debut with tracks.

"I'm in with No ID right now. He's incredible. It's fun," Cole told us recently about his album. "I realized this last night when we was in there. My favorite producer, after I started producing [and] paying attention to producers, was Kanye. He came along right at that time. That's my heaviest influence on production. Being in with No ID last night and watching him work, it was like, 'Duh.' I been in with other producers, it don't click. It don't connect. It connects with him. I figure if I grew up looking up to Kanye, Kanye is cut from the No ID cloth."

With that said, Cole is leaning toward producing the bulk of the LP himself.

"I do want to do the majority of the project," he explained. "The negative side of being a producer and rapper — 'cause I'm a rapper first — the negative side of being a producer on top of that is I got real picky with beats. I'm trying to break outta that zone and maybe get on some beats I might not have rapped on before. I think the key of some rap artists is sometime you can make a beat that's not so hot, hot. But the production side of me is [saying], 'You not gonna get on that. Listen to those drums.' "

J. Cole's debut LP is due later this year.

Paramore's Hayley Williams Takes Vocal 'Precautions' Before Tour

Posted: 02 Feb 2010 03:50 AM PST

'I can't eat past a certain time ... and I warm up a lot,' she tells MTV News before band hits the road in April.

The joke surrounding Paramore's last U.S. tour was that it was "cursed," and with all the canceled shows, battles with laryngitis and a seemingly endless string of illnesses that hammered the band, you can sort of see why.

So now, with a fresh batch of dates announced, how do the guys (and gal) of Paramore plan to break the curse? Why, with a sensible diet and plenty of exercise, of course.

"The last tour, I lost my voice during the first show. And the day after, I was straight to a doctor," frontwoman Hayley Williams told MTV News on Sunday on the Grammy red carpet. "And, you know, I've had trouble with my voice for a long time, since I was 15, and I don't know why, but now, I take precautions with my diet. ... I can't eat past a certain time, because [she makes a vomiting noise], and I warm up a lot, more carefully than I ever did.

"It's less stressful. It takes up a little more time, but it's so worth it," Williams continued. "I feel great, we can play shows, and I don't have to think about it. Just get up onstage and have a good time."

Hopefully, things will run much smoother this time out. And while they're preparing for the tour (it starts April 26 in Knoxville, Tennessee), they're also putting the finishing touches on the video for "The Only Exception," a tender love song that's pretty much a departure from anything they've done previously. And with the ballad out of the way, they're even starting to think about new material, though getting through the tour remains the top priority.

"We're always making music," bassist Jeremy Davis said. "But give us some time. It'll happen."

While Paramore didn't take home a Grammy on Sunday (their "Decode" from the "Twilight" soundtrack lost out to the "Slumdog Millionaire" tune "Jai Ho" in the Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media category), the night wasn't a total waste. They were taking mental notes and possibly lining up a collaboration or two.

"Hayley and Jeremy used to be in a funk cover band, and I feel like I've never heard Hayley's voice sound so good as when she sings soul and funk," guitarist Taylor York said. "So if there's any way to do a collaboration with someone in that genre, I think it would be amazing."

Pink Had The Best Grammy Performance, Readers Say

By Kyle Anderson

Sunday night's 52nd annual Grammy Awards crammed a total of 16 performances into three and a half hours. Along the way, some of the biggest names in music stepped up to the plate to deliver their signature hits and team up with favorite contemporaries or beloved icons.

There was Lady Gaga's stunning show-opener with Elton John, Beyoncés run through Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know," the moving tribute to Michael Jackson with Usher, Carrie Underwood, Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson and Jennifer Hudson, and Taylor Swift's tag-team with Stevie Nicks.

But who was the favorite among the night's many highlights? Earlier Monday (February 1), we posed that question on the MTV Newsroom blog. More than 6,300 fans voted, and while the results are not exactly scientific, it does paint a picture of what people got excited about last night.

Pink leads the pack with 33 percent of the vote. It's easy to see why, as her acrobatic performance of "Glitter in the Air" was not only visually gorgeous, but also technically impressive — she was able to keep singing even as she was spinning around in the air.

"All the ladies did well, but one performer stood out the most. That was Pink," commenter Nicole noted on the post. "It was the most magical, simple yet amazing performance I have ever seen. She stole the show."

The other big vote-getter in the poll was the tag-team between Lady Gaga and Elton John, which saw the former perform her "Poker Face" before the latter joined her for "Speechless" and "Your Song."

After those two, it's a mixed bag: Beyoncé took home 9 percent, while Taylor Swift — who won Album of the Year — picked up 7 percent for her performance. The high-profile tribute to Michael Jackson came in just behind that with 6 percent, and the Dave Matthews Band managed 4 percent.

Who had the best performance at the Grammys? Leave your thoughts in the comments or vote in the still-open poll at the MTV Newsroom blog.

Travis Barker 'Can't Wait' To Record New Blink-182 LP

Posted: 01 Feb 2010 01:25 AM PST

'We're about to start working on it,' drummer says of new LP.
By James Montgomery

Travis Barker has heard what both of his Blink-182 bandmates have had to say about the status of the group's much-anticipated new album ... that it would be coming out in 2011 or, alternatively, that it would be coming out much sooner. And now, he's wading into the fray.

When MTV News caught up with Barker backstage at the Grammy Awards on Sunday — minutes after he rocked the stage with Lil Wayne, Eminem and Drake — we asked him for an update on Blink's follow-up to their self-titled 2003 effort. And, from the sound of things, it's gonna be a long year for Blink fans.

"We're about to start working on it. I'm gonna try to wrap up my album and, uh, Tom has his band, he's wrapping up that album, and then we'll start working on a Blink record," Barker said. "We go to Europe in August for all the festivals ... we do, like, six weeks out there, and then our album will come out probably early next year."

A spokesperson for Blink-182's label Interscope did not respond to MTV News' request for comment at press time.

So while the band seems to be following bassist Mark Hoppus' plan of "just getting back in the studio and do what we do," the fruits of that plan might not be heard for a while. But Barker maintains that a new Blink record is still very much the top priority for all three men, especially after they passed their first test — a high-profile reunion tour — with flying colors.

"This summer was the test, and we got out there, and it was the best time I've had playing with those two dudes in my life," Barker said. "It felt even better than old times, so I can't wait to do an album together again."

'Jersey Shore' Star Snooki Takes Over The Grammy Red Carpet

MTV News guest correspondent snags interviews with Miley Cyrus, Fergie and other 'Shore'-loving stars.
By Gil Kaufman

LOS ANGELESSnooki's great red-carpet adventure at Sunday's Grammy Awards began around 1 p.m., when the "Jersey Shore" star looked up to find herself staring at Judas Priest singer Rob Halford's bald head.

"Who are you guys?" she asked the metal legend.

There would be a lot of that over the next four hours, as Snooki, who frequently admitted she only loved fist-pumping house music, mixed it up with Miley Cyrus, Fergie, Kara DioGuardi, Flo Rida, Justin Bieber and new BFF Katy Perry. (Perry even posted a TwitPic of her encounter with Snooks.)

Between obsessively monitoring the comments on her Twitter feed (@sn00ki), she took some career advice from MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway as she bided her time waiting for "Shore" amore Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino to arrive for his "Access Hollywood" reporting gig.

"Yum! Oh my God, you're so hot!" Snooki squeaked when supermodel Marisa Miller walked up, expressing her appreciation for the towering "Victoria's Secret" model, who was barely wearing an upper-thigh-length dress and 6-inch red pumps.

When the 11-member Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles rolled up, wearing traditional deep-purple jackets and floor-length skirts that matched her own, Snooks asked the Best Latin Album nominees to sing a little song for her while she did her best coochie-coochie dance.

She was almost struck speechless by Imogen Heap's clear parasol and Christmas-light-bedecked oversize necklace, but when Snickers heard that the Crystal Method were up next, she shouted, "I love house music!"

One hour in, she finally hooked up with her "friend with benefits," and Mike willingly showed off his "situation," unbuttoning his electric-blue shirt to show his abs. Holding a bejeweled "Access Hollywood" microphone, Mike looked like a pro wielding the mic as a correspondent for the first time, like Snook, even though he'd just flown in. He even asked for a retake when he forgot who made his shiny gray suit.

Then it was Snooki's turn to interview Mike, who said he was jealous that she'd gotten to meet Sean Paul and Twista. "It's gonna be legendary," the Situation promised about season two of "Jersey Shore."

And, as much as she loves her castmate, when "Extra" reporter and "America's Best Dance Crew" host Mario Lopez wanted a moment, Snooks was off and running.

She really hit her groove when LMFAO made their way over, joining them in a shouted chorus of her personal theme song "Shots."

"Are you drunk now?" she asked the duo.

"No," they said.

"Let's go to the bar then!"

Snooki was excited to tell nominee and "Saturday Night Live" star Andy Samberg that "I'm on a Boat" is her castmate Vinnie's favorite song before telling the comedian that she loves the impression Bobby Moynihan does of her on "SNL."

"They say everything that I would say," she bragged a minute later while checking the comments on her Twitter page again, literally seconds before she was told to get ready to interview the founders of the micro-blogging service.

"It wasn't even the Twitter guys," she said dejectedly afterward. "It was some blog or something."

The men of Alice in Chains joked that they looked like the Lakers compared to the diminutive reality star, who admitted she had no idea who they were. She rebounded quickly, trading secrets about having a boy on standby on the road with nominated comedian Kathy Griffin.

"You're adorable. Go have fun, sweetie," Griffin said.

While standing outside to get some fresh air, Snooki ran into Katy Perry, who rolled down the window of her limo and begged for a photo. "You kissed a girl — let's kiss!" Snickers yelled back.

Sway, meanwhile, oversaw a superstar summit: John Legend, The-Dream and Justin Bieber sharing some love. Legend had to say hello to Snooks, who had just finished asking Bieber to call her when he turns 18 after unsuccessfully trying to get him to change his signature hairstyle into a blowout.

Snooki had another moment on the carpet when Perry walked by and joked that she'd have to bend wayyyy over to get into the frame. "Ugh! I'm gonna go kill myself!" Snook groaned when she couldn't get her chance to snap a photo with her major crush, Usher. As they tend to on Planet Snooki, things looked up just seconds later when "American Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi came by with her two artists, Jason Derülo and Iyaz and Snickers did a quick duet on 'Yaz's "Replay."

"She's pretty good. You should sign her!" he told Kara.

"Ahhhhh!" That was the sound of mutual elation as Snicks and Fergie locked eyes and hugged it out. The Black Eyed Peas singer explained that she turned bandmate Taboo onto "Shore" by screening it on her laptop for him at the airport. "We fist-pump every night!" Fergie said. "Snooki, I love you!"

In an only-at-the-Grammys moment, Snook and Miley Cyrus ended the shore girl's big night by sharing hair-care secrets about Southern big hair and guidos. "It's my favorite show," said superfan Cyrus, who named Snook as her favorite castmate. "I'm being you for Halloween. I'm doing the poof and everything. My boyfriend's gonna be Ronnie ... or the Situation — we haven't decided."

"This was the most amazing time of my life," Snooki said as the carpet got rolled up. "I love meeting celebrities, and they love meeting me. It was so awesome."

CBS Defends Bleeped Lil Wayne, Eminem, Drake Grammy Performance

'There are certain things you can't say, or sing, on television,' the network's Chris Ender says.

Some fans are saying CBS censors were overeager with the bleep button during Drake's performance of "Forever" with Lil Wayne and Eminem at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards, but a CBS spokesperson defended the audio edits on Monday (February 1).

The sound was dropped out a number of times during the collective's performance, which drew the ire of fans watching at home. On Twitter and Facebook, viewers posted about their confusion, thinking technical difficulties were to blame. The issue continued as blogs and Web sites, most notably New York magazine, questioned the censorship.

A spokesman for CBS, however, said the rappers were free to perform within a certain parameter that each entertainer had to abide by. CBS' Chris Ender praised the MCs' showmanship but said the explicit material made it difficult to broadcast without some degree of censoring.

"It was a rousing musical performance, but words were edited from the live telecast that didn't meet our broadcast standards," Ender explained, according to The Associated Press. "We have great respect for artists' creative freedom, but there are certain things you can't say, or sing, on television."

According to a number of reports, the "Forever" performance was more audible during the tape-delayed broadcast on the West Coast. Many have also noted that the artists themselves actually censored their lyrics and either replaced them with clean words or pauses. It's a difficult position for CBS to be in, though, considering Wayne and Eminem chose to perform a song that many have yet to hear — "Drop the World," from Weezy's upcoming Rebirth album — which includes a significant amount of profanity.

The 2010 Grammy Awards may be over, but MTV News will have much, much more from the show, including reports on your favorite nominees, party photos, behind-the-scenes video and much more from the big show!
