Why Are Some People Blaming Rihanna For Alleged Altercation With Chris Brown?

National Organization for Women president says victim-blaming is not unusual in such situations.

If the many media reports about the alleged altercation on Sunday between Chris Brown and girlfriend Rihanna are to be believed, she suffered a serious assault from her 19-year-old boyfriend. While police have not named the victim in the case or released details of the assault, a number of media outlets have cited sources who said that Rihanna was the victim and that she suffered serious injuries.

Brown was arrested on Sunday and booked on suspicion of making criminal threats in what has been described as a domestic-abuse incident that was the culmination of a reportedly troubled relationship with an alleged history of previous abusive incidents.

Based on comments MTV News has received on the incident, a surprising number of people — some of whom are apparently female, although screen names often aren't gender-specific — are blaming Rihanna for the alleged incident.

For example, "I don't think Chris would just a hit a girl like that," wrote reader Nika2hot. "She had to do something or say something out the way for him to really hurt her."

"Blaming the victim has gone on as long as I can remember, both in sexual assault and domestic violence," said Kim Gandy, the president of NOW, the National Organization For Women. "When I started working on domestic-violence issues in the 1970s, women would not come forward because they knew they would be blamed, no matter how blameless they knew they were. Maybe they hadn't ironed his shirt right, or burned the toast, or 'done something' to justify being beaten."

Gandy said progress has been made since then, but the cycle of violence has continued, and in fact, has been on the upswing among teens over the past decade. "You hear teenagers now saying, 'He roughs her up when she gets out of line, but that's how he shows her he loves her.' "

She also noted that sometimes in cases of domestic abuse, even women will fall into the victim-blaming pattern, saying, "These men aren't really responsible, they must have been provoked ... a man wouldn't 'just beat her like that for no reason.' "

While the majority of commenters said they were shocked by the allegations and disappointed by the alleged actions of Brown, quite a few pointed the finger at Rihanna, 20, with a few alluding to unsubstantiated Internet rumors regarding intimate details of the couple's sexual relationship. (Some comments have been edited to correct grammar and punctuation.)

"Despite what we think, there are three sides to a story: his side, her side, and the truth. I don't know what that is, because I was not there," said MizDIva34.

"I don't wanna believe all this .... Chris wouldn't be that type of guy," wrote jb&weezyfan. "Well he doesn't seem like that type of guy ... this kinda reminds me of the Michael Jackson case ... Chris' career may be ruined forever ... just like Michael's ... sooo sad. I love all his songs. Well I'm still gonna support him. I just don't believe it ... until he says it ..... cause Rihanna is a ***** .. well she looks like one anyways."

While Rihanna has gotten an outpouring of support on her official MySpace page and Brown has gotten similar messages on his, some of the people posting on Brown's page and a few MTV readers were even harsher in their indictment of the alleged victim in the case.

Another reader, "Zjera_Boo," wrote, "If what I hear is correct and Rihanna gave chris an STD, then she needed it, but they are right he is only human." Also alluding to the Internet rumors, "Boogababe" added, "You guys seem to be forgetting the real reason why he did it in the first place ... He did that coz he was mad * a girl he trusted and which he was with ... which turned around to put his life in jeopardy by infecting him with an STD???!!!?? Comm'on guys Rihanna had what was coming to her...Brusies can heal ova some time but putting your health on the line like that is hectic!"

In keeping with what Gandy said was the typical pattern of victim scapegoating, "Alissa" argued, "Rihanna must have provoked it in some way, that still does not give Chris the right to do what he did so in the end, who's really to blame? They're both super young and need to remember who they were before the fame and who they are now."

Candice Hopkins, director of the Love is Respect Helpline, a national teen dating abuse hotline was not necessarily surprised at the large number of negative comments from females.

"Young people are not necessarily told what a healthy relationship looks like, so they're not sure if someone could or could not be abusive ... what is the line?" she told MTV News. "Domestic violence has been going on for so long, and it's such a part of our culture, on TV and in movies, that it's easy to say, 'She must have done something to deserve it.' "

Hopkins said there might also be a bit of a star factor that is influencing some of the young women calling out Rihanna. "There's a percentage who don't want to believe that this young man who has spoken out against domestic violence and seems to have a positive message can seem as abusive as this incident seems," she said.

And while Brown has not been charged with domestic abuse at press time, Gandy said the incident is an opportunity to talk about what men and women can do to avoid these types of situations in the future.

"It's awfully important for men to be involved in this," she said. "I talk with a lot of men about the joking and banter that goes on [about domestic abuse] and even when they're uncomfortable with it, they don't want to say anything because they don't want to be seen as a stick in the mud. But they need to stand up and say, 'Don't talk about a girl like that, that's not cool.'

"If your buddy is talking about doing something, you can't let it go," she continued. "You have to say, 'Hey, that's wrong. Why would you do that?' It's much easier to not say anything. But when you say it out loud you might get a bad reaction, but maybe he thinks twice about it if he knows his buddies are not backing him up."

'American Idol' — Meet The Top 36, Twitter-ized

Posted: 11 Feb 2009 11:39 PM PST

We give you the rundown on the top 36, in 140 characters or less.
By James Montgomery

Last night, after much deliberation (and some gratuitous mansion-ing) "American Idol" narrowed the seemingly endless field of contestants down to the Top 36. There were some shocking cuts (Jamal!), and some improbable choices (Norman Gentle?!?! Tatiana?!?!) along the way, but at least now we know just who will be in the running for the big shiny recording contract.

But how well do we really know the Top 36? Who is Alex Wagner-Trugman, really? We're just as confused as you are. So, in order to help us all understand the differences between the Jesse Langseths and the Ju'Not Joyners, we've created mini-bios for each of the remaining "Idol" contestants. Oh, and after last night's Shorty Awards we decided to do it Twitter style (140 characters or less), to help you pass the information on to your friends (Tweet away!) Because knowledge is power ... or something like that.

Anyway, here's your "American Idol" Top 36 ... Twitter-ized.

Adam Lambert: Vaguely emo theater guy from Los Angeles. Possesses big pipes, questionable fashion sense. Sorta looks like an elf.

Alex Wagner-Trugman: Rosy-cheeked California boychild who got sick from mold in his closet. Launched a million "closeted" puns.

Alexis Grace: Pint-size mother with pink highlights. Has immaculate teeth. Startling resemblance to Molly Ringwald/ Hayley Williams.

Allison Iraheta: Brassy, big-voiced, barely old enough to drive. Only 16, in case you missed this the first 100 times Randy said it.

Ann Marie Boskovich: Ultra-milquetoast singer/songwriter from Nashville. Stereotypical girl with guitar. Wears many flowing dresses.

Anoop Desai: Randy-approved "'Noop Dogg." Fodder for a million "Sanjaya/Phone Operator" conspiracy theories if he makes it to Top 12.

Arianna Afsar: Former teen Miss America contestant. Child actor. Founder of "Adopt a Grandfriend" charity. Is bland-yet-likable.

Brent Keith: "Nashville Star" also-ran. Signed, recorded song for Earnhardt biopic. This does not seem to bother "Idol" producers.

Casey Carlson: Button-cute singer with gigantic head. Previous career as bikini model for shady Web site never mentioned. Sssshhhh!

Danny Gokey: Overcame personal tragedy to make Top 36. Has great voice, is inspiring, despite weird glasses and faux-hawk.

Felicia Barton: Made Top 36 after Joanna Pacitti "disqualified." Should say all you need to know about her chances of winning.

Jackie Tohn: Actress/musician who apparently was on "The Sopranos" once. Sort of reminds us of Adriana, now that we think of it.

Jasmine Murray: Very young. Impressive voice. Even more impressive eyebrows. Early favorite who faded a tad in Hollywood Week.

Jeanine Vailes: Who? Don't know if we saw her sing during Hollywood Week. Looks like Leona Lewis. Sings like TBD.

Jesse Langseth: Husky-voiced Midwesterner. Is vaguely Fiona Apple-esque. Wore impressively embroidered jeans on Wednesday night's show.

Jorge Nunez-Mundez: Is from Puerto Rico, a fact "Idol" producers feel the need to constantly remind us of. Good singer. Funny guy.

Ju'Not Joyner: Possessor of impressive mid-name apostrophe. Could possibly be named after Diablo Cody flick. Should go by "JJ."

Kai Kalama: Somehow made it through despite blown voice in Hollywood Week. Has hair like Sayid from "Lost." Jack Johnson vibe.

Kendall Beard: Is bubbly. Like a combination between Kristy Lee Cook and Kellie Pickler. And we mean that in the best possible way.

Kris Allen: Student from Arkansas. Soulful voice. Is not this Kris Allen, which is a shame.

Kristen McNamara: Another "Nashville Star" castoff. Drama at every step. Her hair takes on new colors weekly. Resembles Anna Faris.

Lil Rounds: Has three kids, would not have to change her name to sign deal with Bad Boy. Vaguely Fantasia-esque in style and voice.

Matt Breitzke: Blue-collar, slightly husky everydude with voice to match. No, not that one. He's a welder. Totally different.

Matt Giraud: Dueling Pianos host from Michigan. He probably knows the words to the UM fight song by heart. Tip your waitresses!

Megan Corkrey: Never seen during Hollywood Week. Has tattoos, a quirky voice, will probably not win because of both. A shame, really.

Michael Sarver: Blue-collar, slightly husky everydude with voice to match. No, not that one. He's a roughneck. Totally different.

Mishavonna Henson: "Edgy" country singer. Also a child actress. Strangely angular.

Nathaniel Marshall: Overdramatic Day-glo emo kid with many headbands, piercings. Doesn't really make sense. Mother is in prison.

Nick Mitchell: Comedy crooner with multiple personalities. Continues to survive, somewhat inexplicably. Is a genius.

Ricky Braddy: A Paula fave. Kind of looks like Danny Gokey, minus the glasses. Already has a goofy fan club, the Braddy Bunch.

Scott Macintyre: This year's inspirational story. Wore humorous "Mind the Gap" T-shirt during auditions. Good behind the piano.

Stephen Fowler: Inexplicably made the cut despite Hollywood Week meltdown. Should probably try singing with his eyes open. Good hair.

Stevie Wright: High school student. Nice voice. Mesmerizing teeth. Next ...

Tatiana Nicole Del Toro: Long name prevents copious Twitter-ized insults. Is sort of a monster. Is sort of crazy. Is very annoying.

Taylor Vaifanua: Is from Utah. Has released an album. A judges' favorite this year. Last name difficult to spell.

Von Smith: Sort of looks like A.J. from "The Sopranos." Huge voice. Earned a pre-"Idol" fanbase with his outrageous YouTube clips.

How Will Chris Brown Incident Affect Rihanna's Career?

Posted: 12 Feb 2009 05:16 AM PST

'I think Rihanna is big enough that this will not cloud her career,' one expert says.
By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by MTV News staff

Rihanna rode a tremendous wave of success following the release of her 2007 album, Good Girl Gone Bad. The lead video, "Umbrella," featuring Jay-Z, showcased the Barbadian beauty's new look: a fashionable bob and edgier, sexy attire.

Sunday's Grammy Awards should have seen the singer in all her splendor, as she was not only set to perform, but her boyfriend Chris Brown was also scheduled to take to the stage.

But in the hours leading up to the telecast, she and Brown shocked everyone by reportedly engaging in an argument that turned into a physical altercation.

Neither party has commented since Brown turned himself in to police and was charged with making criminal threats. Rihanna has remained withdrawn from the public eye. Rumors have been swirling regarding the extent of her injuries, but only Rihanna's publicist and her grandmother have spoken publicly; her grandmother told a Barbados newspaper that the singer is "fine."

While Brown has had endorsement deals suspended and his songs pulled from some radio stations, many wonder what Rihanna's next move will be in the wake of this surprising turn of events.

"I think it must be incredibly humiliating, that kind of experience," Julianne Shepherd of music and culture magazine the Fader told MTV News this week. "So it might take her a while to get back in the public eye. Especially to have your domestic problems out there on this level — everyone in the world knows them, is following every detail. It's going to be be really hard for her."

According to several reports, Rihanna has been cooperating with police in the investigation against Brown. As of press time, the status of their relationship is uncertain. Certainly, Rihanna has gained a tremendous amount of sympathy as a result of allegedly being the victim of a domestic attack. (She has also garnered a surprising amount of comments blaming her for the alleged incident.)

But Laura Checkoway, a freelance writer who has written about Brown extensively, said Rihanna has struck a chord with many women by choosing to take control of her situation.

"In my experience the woman is sort of taking a stand and pressing charges, that's a big statement and a strong statement. And choosing not to do that also speaks volumes," Checkoway explained. "So it'll be interesting to see what she wants to do."

When MTV News spoke to a number of fans in New York, their reactions to the altercation varied. A number of both men and women, however, suggested that the empathy people have for Rihanna would be lost if she decides to reunite with Brown. Sources told MTV News that their relationship had become rocky in recent weeks.

Public-relations expert Howard Bragman, who authored the book "Where's My Fifteen Minutes?" said what happens next for both young stars will be extremely difficult. Bragman noted that in addition to the legal ramifications, Brown and Rihanna will also have to endure criticism from their fans over their actions.

"It's ridiculously hard to deal with this in the public eye, because people have to deal with it in the court of law — Rihanna and Chris have to deal with it in the court of law — and they have to deal with the court of public opinion," he said.

Shepherd and Checkoway both agreed.

"I think that it's a sad story and I think that it spirals into some whole other beast," Checkoway said. "Both of them are probably going through it right now."

On the other hand, Shepherd added that Rihanna has proven to be at the helm of her image. She thinks the singer has made positive choices so far in her career and ultimately her track record will define her. Shepherd said this event, regardless of the harm, hopefully won't have a lasting effect on Rihanna.

"I think Rihanna is big enough that this will not cloud her career, it will not overpower her career," Shepherd insisted. "She has enough hits, she's famous enough, enough people love her. She's a global star."

Chris Brown Had Reportedly Roughed Up Rihanna Before

TMZ, Us Weekly say relationship between two singers was volatile.

The Los Angeles District Attorney has not charged Chris Brown for the alleged assault on girlfriend Rihanna on Sunday morning in Los Angeles, but TMZ is reporting that the 19-year-old singer will almost certainly be charged with felony domestic battery in the case.

Citing unnamed "law enforcement" sources, the site reported early Thursday (February 12) that Rihanna told police that the alleged incident inside the couple's rented Lamborghini on the morning of the Grammys was not the first time Brown has attacked her. And though the evidence for the criminal-threats charge he was booked on Sunday night is described as "weak," the singer could face other charges once the D.A. takes the case, the site said.

The matter was kicked backed to police on Wednesday after the D.A.'s office cited insufficient evidence for the criminal threats charge, which is more serious than a domestic battery count. Numerous sources have said that the D.A. is reluctant to try such a high-profile case unless the evidence is very solid, which is why more evidence was requested.

TMZ also claimed to have a more detailed rundown of event leading up to the alleged attack, which reportedly left Rihanna with a bruised and bloody face and bite marks on her arm and fingers. According to the police report cited by TMZ, after Brown allegedly received a text message from another woman, the couple got into an argument. TMZ reported that Rihanna would not initially tell police what set the fight off, but after the fight began, she "ordered him to drive her home and 'faked a call' to someone, saying things like, 'He's dropping me off. Make sure the cops are there.' "

The threat of police involvement reportedly enraged Brown, which is the basis of the criminal-threats charge. According to the report, Brown, 19, then allegedly began attacking Rihanna with his fists. During the fight, Rihanna reportedly took the keys out of the ignition and threw them outside the car.

TMZ claimed that the reports also include information that Rihanna told the police about an "ongoing and escalating abusive relationship" with Brown. Sources have also told MTV News that the relationship had hit a rough patch in recent weeks.

As both singers continue their silence in the wake of the incident, and the career fallout for Brown escalated to include sponsorship losses and radio stations dropping his songs, two unnamed friends also told US Weekly magazine that Brown may have roughed up Rihanna in the past. One unidentified friend said that Brown always had a "volatile" relationship with Rihanna and a confidant of the singer reportedly told the magazine that she had visible bruises on her neck in early December.

At the time, the friend reportedly asked, "is everything was OK with her and Chris," saying Rihanna explained, "'We broke up again.' I didn't pursue the issue further."

Brown's sister, Lytrell "Tootie" Bundy, told Extra on Wednesday that the singer is "doing good" and that, "he's coping ... He's doing ... [as well] as to be expected."She described her brother, who has been open about the alleged domestic abuse he and his sister witnessed in their home as children, as a "good boy — never violent."

Mastodon Talk Doomy, 'Timeless' New Album

Posted: 12 Feb 2009 03:53 AM PST

'Every time I listen to it, all I can think of is how lucky and proud I am,' guitarist Brent Hinds says of Crack the Skye.
By James Montgomery

Mastodon
Photo: MTV News

By their own admission, Mastodon have always injected themselves into the far-reaching concepts of their, uh, concept albums. Leviathan was as much about loading into a white van to tirelessly tour the U.S. as it was about Captain Ahab's quest for the mythic whale. Blood Mountain was about their perilous dealings with the major label system as it was about ascending a treacherous peak.

Which is why their new album, Crack The Skye, is so different: It's both their most personal and their most out-there concept album to date. Taken from the twin experiences of drummer Brann Dailor (who wrote most of the lyrics) and guitarist Brent Hinds (who penned most of the music), it's a far-reaching story that's rooted in the deeply personal.

"My sister passed away when I was a teenager and it was awful, and there's no better way to pay tribute to a lost loved one than having an opportunity to be in a group with my friends and we make art together," Dailor told MTV News. "Her name was Skye, so Crack the Skye means a lot of different things. For me personally, it means the moment of being told you lost someone dear to you, [that moment] is enough to crack the sky.

"Death is part of life. Everybody goes through loss at some point in their life, but when someone commits suicide very young, it has very damaging, lasting effects," he continued. "It's our duty as musicians and artists to reach down as deep as possible into human and life experiences and put that into your art. And it felt like Brent was coming from a deeper place, musically, so I felt like perfect opportunity to connect with him."

That place Hinds was coming from was equally bleak. After a post-VMA incident in 2007 left him with "severe" head injuries (Hinds won't talk about the incident, except to mutter that if he ever meets up with the parties involved, well, bad things are going to happen), he was hospitalized and spent nine months recovering. When he eventually returned home, he began churning out spirally, doom-y guitar lines, echoing the spiraling dizziness he felt in his brain.

"The music I was diving into was more of a laid-back feel, because of the state I was in — the recovery state, in your pajamas, just taking it super easy," Hinds said. "I had extreme vertigo ... my equilibrium was totally messed up. For nine months, I was dizzy ... I kind of got used to it after a while, and I didn't mind that, but after a while, I told Brann, I was like, 'Man, I'm kind of getting tired of feeling euphoric.' "

So they took those experiences and worked them into a story which could best be summed up as "spaced out." The spirit of a paraplegic boy leaves his earthbound body, flies too close to the sun, gets lost in a ghost realm, begs to be sent back to earth, eventually binds to the soul of early 20th-Century Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin, is with him through his death, is cast back into the heavens and is eventually led back to his own body, where he's cured of his ailments (or something like that). And if you're at a loss to see how Mastodon are reflected in that, well, you're not the only one.

"We're not really in this record," Hinds laughed. "I mean, not as much as in previous albums. But, I can look at some of the lyrics, like [on album opener "Oblivion"], 'I flew beyond the sun before it was time,' I look at that lyric as being about the VMA night, you know? Like I went beyond the sun before it was time. I took it too far, and they were trying to pull me back in."

Skye isn't just different conceptually, it's also different sonically. For the first time, songs don't feel like exercises in shredding — they're given time and space, which leads to some seriously (dare we say it) jammy moments (recalling the Mars Volta or Frank Zappa) and some seriously lengthy running times. Don't worry though, it's still a Mastodon album, which means there's also plenty of airtight riffs, pounding drums and sandpaper yowls. But after delving so deep and coming so close to death, you can't blame the guys for wanting to slow things down a tad — to get epic and ponderous. And that's what they've done here.

"This is the record we wanted to make right now," Dailor said. "It is my favorite thing we've ever done, and I hold it very dear."

"We always wanted to make something timeless, like time is amazing to us, we obsess on it. We're getting older by the second, everyone is, everything is moving so much, that we want to stop just one track of it, and just have it to be part of rock and roll history," Hinds added. "To me, it comes across as a classic rock album, I hope it makes it into that status, every time I listen to it, all I can think of is how lucky and proud I am to be hanging out with these dudes."

Keshia Chante Not Involved In Chris Brown/ Rihanna Incident, Manager Insists

'[Chante] was nowhere near the incident in any way,' manager Mona Scott says.
By Jocelyn Vena

Despite rumors that singer Keshia Chante was the young woman who sent a text message to Chris Brown the night he allegedly attacked Rihanna, her manager insists that the 20-year-old had nothing to do with the incident, which took place early Sunday morning.

"This is another unsubstantiated, untrue report; she was nowhere near the incident in any way," Mona Scott told UsMagazine.com about rumors that a text message to Brown sparked an argument between Rihanna and Brown, who was reportedly also in Los Angeles the night of this incident.

"She was nowhere near Rihanna or Chris Brown," the manager added. "She had nothing to do with any of that."

Scott said that Chante has been "frantic" after she began getting phone calls from people following the rumors that she was the one who had texted Brown. Although she insists that Brown and Chante barely know one another, a segment from "Entertainment Tonight Canada" finds Chante showing Brown around town. In a later interview, she sent Brown a message, to which Brown responded he would love to meet up with her again.

"She's not even dating Chris!" Scott said. "I think they met a few years back, probably three or four years ago, in Canada. But that's it. It's crazy — there's been a continuous kind of reporting of them linked together, and this has been the worst of it all. But, no — she had absolutely nothing to do with them or any of that."

Scott also denied that Chante will be playing Aaliyah in a movie adaptation of the late singer's life, although she did say it would be a "great opportunity."

Aubrey O'Day Gets Fan Support For Playboy Pics

While many say pictorial is 'beautiful,' some think the singer 'has gone way too far.'

Aubrey O'Day's former "Making the Band" co-stars have already sounded off about the singer's Playboy photo shoot. Now, fans are reacting to the singer's provocative magazine cover and photo shoot, which hits newsstands this Friday.

MTV News brought our slightly censored versions of the Playboy photos to Times Square to see what the public thinks of her revealing pictorial, and received a positive response from most.

"I think she can do whatever she wants to do. It's her body. She can show it off. It's Playboy magazine; how is it risqué?" Melba DelOrbe said. Her friend added, "If you have a nice body, you're free to show it if you feel like showing it."

Two fans immediately responded with an "OMG!" when they were shown the pictures, adding, "It's all right. For Playboy, it's not that bad. For Danity Kane, [her career] is ruined. But sex sells."

But a bunch of fans in Times Square disagreed, saying it wouldn't hurt her career at all. "She's beautiful," Marcella Patruccio exclaimed. "She's very beautiful. She's gorgeous. I think she'll go places, really."

"You can still be comfortable with your sexuality and look classy. Playboy is supposed to be classy and she kinda ruined it," amandam86 commented on the pictures posted on MTV.com.

"Homegirl is odd these days; but she looks dope on the cover pic!" added Cjcarpen, another commenter on the site.

One fan, donovan4realworld22, felt that her nude pictorial had crossed the line, commenting, "She has gone way too far." Another, avant-garde minimalist, lived up to his moniker with the simple question, "WTF?"

Although most fans were supportive of O'Day's choice to pose nude in the men's magazine, there was one common criticism: "Nice pictures. Why is she holding her mouth open through all of them? Did she get her lips done and can't close her mouth?" carriek wrote.

"I think it could've been classy if she would have kept her mouth closed or smiled," KT wrote. "She looks like she was trying too hard to be sexy, so it looks unnatural. Just my opinion."

One fan took issue with the reasons O'Day gave for posing in the magazine. "There is nothing empowering about posing nude or barely wearing any clothes," Bsmart18 wrote. "What's empowering is being ... sexy without having to strip. Anybody can take off their clothes and call that sexy. Not everybody can have their sexiness shine from the inside out. It's all about your swagger and confidence. I'm sorry, Aubrey ... you are speaking nonsense."

Live from New York on Saturday night, the Jonas Brothers will make their big "Saturday Night Live" debut. The boys have the distinguished honor of being the night's musical guest, and Joe Jonas admitted that getting the chance to be on the show is a dream come true.

"I think you get a little nervous with different things," Joe told MTV News earlier this week. "But I think it's gonna be cool to be on 'SNL.' I mean, I've always wanted to be on 'SNL' and I think it's going to be awesome."

Joe, who has previously shared with the world his desire to be a stand-up comic, hopes that he'll have the opportunity to show off his comic chops on the show. "We hope to do that. That would be a lot of fun!" he said.

Kevin added that he too would love the chance to get in on one of the sketches, but has yet to see what sorts of characters they'll be playing. "Who knows, we have a couple of rehearsals this week," he said. "So we'll definitely get to see what happens."

If the guys get the chance to act on "SNL" this weekend, it will be a good preview of what fans can expect from their upcoming Disney sitcom, "JONAS" The guys just wrapped up 18 episodes and are nearly through with production.

"We are loving the show, we are having a blast doing it, and we are really excited for people to see it," Kevin said. He recalled his favorite episode, the plot of which sounds a bit like the Michel Gondry film "Be Kind Rewind." "[There's one episode where] we destroy all of our home videos and we have to remake all of them, and it is really fun. It's really cool."

The process of weeding "American Idol" contestants down to the top 36 is already fraught with tons of drama, which was heightened this season by the decision to have some of the contestants vying for a coveted spot on the show compete in sing-offs to determine their fate in the semifinals.

But as pressure-packed as Wednesday night's pare-down was, the real fireworks came shortly after the show aired, when Fox announced that former "Annie" Broadway star and one-time professional major label singer Joanna Pacitti, who appeared to make the cut in the pre-taped show, had been disqualified from the competition.

"It has been determined that Joanna Pacitti is ineligible to continue in the competition," read a note on the official "Idol" site, which did not explain why Pacitti was disqualified. "Felicia Barton has replaced Ms. Pacitti as part of the top 36."

Unlike past seasons, producers were up-front from the beginning this year about Pacitti's professional past, and when the judges put her through to the top 36 on Wednesday night's show, they frequently alluded to her up-and-down career tribulations, causing the singer to weep openly. When the judges finally ended the tension and told Pacitti she was through, the singer burst into tears and promised that after forgetting her lyrics several times in the Hollywood rounds, she would make them proud.

According to the Los Angeles Times, an unnamed source close to the show said Pacitti was bounced to "avoid the appearance of impropriety." It has been reported that Pacitti had some close personal relationships to some of the executives at 19 Management, one of he companies that helps produce the show and manages some of the winners.

Though last year's finalists included a number of singers with music-industry ties, several of whom had released albums, Pacitti, 24, drew fire early on this year, thanks to her former deal with Geffen/A&M, which released her debut album, This Crazy Life, in 2006. Several of her songs have appeared on soundtracks, including "Legally Blonde," "First Daughter" and "Bratz," which included her song, "Out From Under," a tune that Britney Spears covered on her Circus album.

At press time, spokespeople for "Idol" were not available to provide further details of Pacitti's disqualification, or to answer questions about whether her ineligibility was determined before Wednesday's show aired.

There were, of course, other emotional high points and some head-scratching decisions on the show, including the semifinal berth for comedian/multiple , who seemed genuinely humbled to be on the show and promised to continue mixing his comedy with singing, as well as the passing through of emotionally unpredictable Tatiana Del Toro.

With Pacitti gone, the top 36 semifinalists looks as follows:
