Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Eminem, Fall Out Boy Mark End Of An Era At 'TRL' Finale

The show's biggest stars — and, of course, the screaming kids — were back for a packed three-hour finale.

NEW YORK — It was like old times in MTV's Times Square studio. There were superstars everywhere you looked, frantic stagehands darting about, and down below — packed against police barricades — screaming kids ... lots of screaming kids.

On Sunday night (November 16), after 10 years and more than 2,500 episodes, MTV's legendary "TRL" bid adieu to the airwaves with "Total Finale Live," a positively packed three-hour party that was as much about celebrating memories from the past as it was creating ones for the future.

It was a livewire, unpredictable and — fittingly — star-studded send-off for a show that prided itself in being all those things. It was a night full of big-time performances, big-name guest stars and nostalgic trips down memory lane. It was the kind of proper, celebratory goodbye that most of MTV's biggest programs (be it "Jackass" or "Beavis and Butt-head" or even "The Osbournes") don't actually get, which sort of makes sense, considering that "TRL" launched the careers of today's biggest stars, reimagined the concept of live television and, whether you realize it or not, probably defined a generation.

A who's who of "TRL" alumni rocked stages both inside and out of the studio, starting with Beyoncé, who, backed by a cracking live band, poured her heart and soul into "If I Were a Boy" and then flipped the switch and tore through muscled up versions of "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and "Crazy in Love." Fall Out Boy (sans bassist Pete Wentz, who was with his wife Ashlee Simpson as she reportedly went into labor) followed her, braving the chilly New York night to shred on a flatbed truck parked in the heart of Times Square. Wentz even got some new-dad advice from Good Charlotte's Joel Madden on the show.

Later in the night, a trio of hip-hop heavyweights — Ludacris, Nelly and Snoop Dogg — performed their greatest "TRL" hits, then joined forces on the Doggfather's "Drop It Like It's Hot." Former "TRL" mainstays the Backstreet Boys took a nostalgic run at "I Want It That Way," and 50 Cent — who, in true Fiddy fashion, kept show producers waiting until the very last minute — pounded his way through "In Da Club" and his current hit, "Get Up." (Backstage, he had some choice words for Kanye West and Donald Trump.)

And though they didn't perform, tons of other stars stopped by to pay their respects. Justin Timberlake chuckled as clips of his frosted-tipped 'NSYNC past played on flat-screen TVs in the studio. Taylor Swift clutched a "TRL" yearbook that she got signed by everyone in attendance. Diddy — who appeared on the show more than anyone else — did a bit of hosting, a bit of joking and (of course) a bit of plugging for his new fragrance, I Am King, and the upcoming Notorious B.I.G. biopic "Notorious." And, in a move that could only happen on live television, Kid Rock wandered around with a stogie and a glass of beer, then greeted a female admirer in the audience with: "Hi, baby, you're much too young for me."

There were phoned-in congrats from Eminem and Christina Aguilera. Miley Cyrus geeking out in the "TRL" photo booth. More former VJs than you could shake a stick at. And plenty of video packages that recounted the most memorable moments from the show's 10-year history — everything from Mariah Carey's wacko striptease to Rudy Guiliani's appearance on the show's first broadcast post-9/11 — and goofy glimpses at your favorite stars' first appearances on the show (a barely legal Xtina, a super-slim Slim Shady, a giggly Britney Spears, to name just a few). There were on-air bleeps and teary pre-teens and even a few "Oh wait, what?!?" moments — you know, the stuff "TRL" was known for.

And, appropriately, there was also one last video countdown. Hosts Carson Daly and Damien Fahey guided viewers (and the screaming fans inside the studio) through the 10 most iconic clips in "TRL" history — everything from Outkast's "Hey Ya!" and 'NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye" to Kid Rock's "Bawitdaba" — a list topped with Britney Spears' " ... Baby One More Time" (sadly, Brit Brit was not on hand to accept the accolades). The fact that all of this played out before a packed (and really squealy) studio audience — and on a massive screen outside in Times Square — only seemed right.

And then, as 11 p.m. drew close on the East Coast, it was time bring the show to a close. Surrounded by friends, fans and the famous, Daly and Fahey raised champagne glasses and attempted to sum up the show's 10-year run in a few sentences. Not surprisingly, this proved rather tough (and Kid Rock and Snoop's "pass the dutchie" antics didn't help matters much), but it was Daly who perhaps did it best, thanking everyone who's ever appeared or worked on the show for a decade's worth of memories, then turning to the camera, raising his glass high and asking, appropriately: "Why are we stopping this show?"

Good question, dude.

'TRL' Finale, Behind The Scenes: Kid Rock Meets 50 Cent, Beyonce Kisses Diddy And More

NEW YORK — We don't have to take our clothes off to have a good time.

Sure, the "TRL" finale was definitely live on Sunday night (November 16) — live, as in you saw exactly what happened, when it happened, and it was one helluva extravaganza — but it's not that type of party.

"Do I have to take my clothes off or something?" Kid Rock asked while sitting in the "Total Finale Live" green room. On Sunday, the room was more of a VIP lounge, where celebs mixed with friends of the show and industry insiders for the iconic series' final episode.

Kid, who you could see earlier in the night sitting in the control room with the production staff, did not have to disrobe. He did tell the naked truth, however, when thinking back to how the decade-old program catapulted his career. "Everything is kinda a blur back then. I was drinking back then. I don't drink anymore, as you can see," Kid said, holding a beer in his hand.

He remembered having to pick his son up from school and then rushing home to see where one of his videos would land on the countdown. " 'It's #7! we might get a new car!' " he recalled thinking at the time. " 'It's #4! Sh--! We might get a new house!' ... If it wasn't for 'TRL,' the radio was no friend of mine in the early days. ... I remember 'TRL' being a launching pad for this whirlwind career I've had."

The Kid suggested that MTV turn the main studio where "TRL" taped into a set for a variety show — a show on which different artists from different genres would be featured. Hmmm ... sounds a lot like "TRL."

Snoop Dogg said the "TRL" studio should become a nightclub, and partial ownership should fall under his paws. Snoop was one of the busiest performers of the night, taking pictures with virtually everyone. On the elevator up to his dressing room, he was basking in the glow of the Pittsburgh Steelers' win. He said he wouldn't mind seeing the Steel Curtain take on New York's G-Men in the Big Game. "Steelers and the Giants in the Super Bowl? That would be a Super Bowl," Snoop said. "Those are the two best teams, and Tennessee."

"It was rather bizarre walking back on the set and seeing Carson," 'NSYNC's JC Chasez said from a different VIP lounge about original host Carson Daly. "It felt like a high school reunion. They were handing out yearbooks. It's sad to see the show go but a wonderful way to recap it."

Speaking of reunions, there was no love-fest rejoining for exes Hilary Duff and Joel Madden. While Good Charlotte stood at the stage door, Hil walked right by without eye contact or words. Duff did get sentimental while recounting her early days on "TRL," standing at the trademarked glass window, watching the fans outside in Times Square. "I didn't ever want to leave the window!" she said.

Pete Wentz wanted to come to the show Sunday but couldn't make it. He had ... well, a more pressing matter to attend to. But his Fall Out Boy brethren fought the good fight in his stead. And just to show they had their buddy on their brains, Academy Is ... bassist Adam Siska — who served as the fill-in — wore a mask with Pete's face on it.

What a moment between 50 Cent and Diddy. The two longtime friends had an exclusive interview with MTV News way, way, way backstage in a corridor. The two talked music, business, "TRL" and who has the hottest MTV show. Diddy joked that 50 is trying to take his spot. A few minutes after Diddy left, 50 asked the MTV News crew, "OK, be honest. Who's cooler: me or Puff?"

Well, maybe just for tonight we'll say Puff. That's because Diddy ran into Beyoncé earlier in the evening when he arrived to the "TRL" studio with an unusually small entourage of two people. Diddy got a kiss on cheek from Mrs. Carter. Cool points galore for that one.

Back to Kid Rock: He was jazzed to run across 50 in the same corridor way, way, way backstage. "Oh, I never met this guy before," Kid said while shaking hands with Fif. "Eminem always tells me I need to meet you when I'm in Detroit. Would you mind doing an MTV News interview with me?"

"Yeah," 50 obliged.

50 Cent Goes After Kanye West, Donald Trump At 'Total Finale Live'

Trump said 'my show is a knockoff of 'The Apprentice'? He's crazy!' 50 says.

Well, there won't be another 50 Cent/ Kanye West SoundScan battle this year, but backstage at "Total Finale Live" on Sunday night (November 16), 50 did talk a bit about his archrival's new album, 808s & Heartache.

"I heard, like, seven songs," 50 said of the album, which features Kanye singing more than on his past albums. "There's a place for it. I think people will enjoy it if you're actually in love or going through something. I think Kanye's going through an interesting point in his career."

West worked extensively with T-Pain on the album, and 50 had some pointed comments about Pain's contributions. "I don't think the public will forgive [Kanye] for it, but it's interesting. I think it's T-Pain's record, but I'd rather buy it from T-Pain."

50 also went after Donald Trump, who recently said the rapper was, er, inspired by "The Apprentice" for 50's new reality show, "The Money and the Power."

"Donald Trump talking about my show and how it's a knockoff of 'The Apprentice'? He's crazy!" 50 said. "That's what happens when you get older — you start to view things differently.

"First, let me point out [my show] got the highest ratings," he said, also claiming that it beat out "A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila."

"And she kissed three girls! She's a hard act to follow," he joked.

50 also offered Trump some unsolicited career advice. "In this economy, he may want to go sing 'In Da Club' instead of selling real estate!"

We'll have lots more from our conversation with 50 at "Total Finale Live" in the coming days!

Making his first television appearance since a plane crash left him badly burned less than two months ago, Travis Barker told fans that he's back in the studio, making music again, and "every day gets better."

Speaking to MTV's Damien Fahey during "Total Finale Live" on Sunday (November 16), Barker said, "Thanks for all the support. I feel better every day."

Barker spoke to Fahey and the MTV audience via satellite from his studio in Los Angeles. It was Barker's first on-camera interview since a private plane skidded off a South Carolina runway in September, killing four and leaving him and bandmate DJ AM severely burned. Barker said he hopes to make music with AM again soon.

"I'm already playing my drums again, and I'm already back in the studio," Barker said.

"It was like riding a bike," the drummer said of his return to the studio. "It was really exciting to know I still have my chops. It still felt good. I still can make it around the kit. Everything felt right, so I'm thankful to be able to play."

Last week, Barker's +44 bandmate (and former Blink-182 partner) Mark Hoppus said he expects Barker to fully recover and return to music soon.

"He can't not drum, you know? The man was born to sit behind a drum kit and do his thing," Hoppus joked to MTV News. "He's healing incredibly well. He's healing very quickly. The doctors are saying that his body is really healing in a positive way. ... No matter what I work on, Travis will be part of, for sure."

Mixtape: I'm Da Man 2K9

411: Shawty Lo is preparing for his March LP, Carlos — that's his name by the way. As 2008 closes out, the Bankhead former D-boy just relinquished his new mixtape, I'm Da Man 2K9, over to the streets. DJ Scream helped him out.

"When I got out of jail in 2004, people said, 'D4L ain't nothin' without Fabo,' " he said of the tape's title. "I was like, 'What?' I went in the studio, and the first song I ever recorded was 'I'm Da Man.' People liked it. In the back of my mind, I thought it was luck. But I kept it going. They tried o blackball me, but I came up. It feels good to be here."

Joints To Check For

» "Man in My City." "I was basically talking, telling people I wasn't trying to be no rapper," Lo said. "I wanted to be like Baby is to Cash Money, Puff is to Bad Boy. I'm just trying to be the man behind the scenes. I started D4L in 2003, ended up coming home from jail in 2004. It came from the heart. Even before Barack Obama won, it felt like he was gonna win. I shouted him out in my song. I'm the man in my city."

» "Get Money Bi---ez" (featuring Lil' Kim). "On my last album, I didn't have nothin' for the women," Lo said. "I'll be doing shows, travelling everywhere. Women ask me, 'When you gonna make songs for us?' I went back and wrote. Then I reached out to Lil' Kim. She blessed me with a verse."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Seven albums later (that's including the independent release Incognegro and his latest Theater of the Mind), and Ludacris can still disintegrate the mic. On his new album, 'Cris fulfilled two dreams: working with Jay-Z and Nas on one track ("I Do It for Hip-Hop") and getting a beat from DJ Premier.

"We just got in," Luda told us about the sessions with Primo. "I've been wanting to do it for so long. He's really quick to make a beat, man. We was vibing. We made about two or three tracks, and I told him which one I absolutely loved. When you hear this sh--, it's gonna remind you of Gang Starr. It's some Gang Starr-reminiscent sh--. I don't think Premier veers away from his sound, but this one could have been on a Gang Starr album. That's almost what I was looking for [sonically]. The name of the song is called 'MVP.'

"You've asked, and a lot of people have asked me, what I want to be known as or remembered as in this rap game," he continued. "I feel like I'm the summation of all. I'm the MVP of this rap game. When it comes to record sales, songs, subject matter, guest appearances, when it comes to rapping fast, slow, being funny, serious — [I'm ] all of these things intertwined into one. I feel like I am the MVP. I feel like you're gonna love this album." Theater of the Mind drops November 24. Luda's Gangsta Grillz smash, The Preview, is also out on the streets. ...

D.O.E. said he definitely came across some tough times recently, as he alluded to in his guest verse on Timbaland's "The Way I Are" last year ("I ain't got a big ol' house/ I rent a room in a house"). Out with the old, in with the new.

"I'm letting everybody know it's a new me," he said about the mixtape The Death of John Doe: The Rise of D.O.E. "It's not John Doe no more. I came in the game, '04, I signed to Timbaland as John Doe. A lot happened. Situation with Interscope didn't go right at first. I fell on my face, couldn't put music out. Went flat broke. It was crazy. Then big homie put me on 'The Way I Are.' We started touring around the world, getting money. I had to let everyone know what it was. People were like, 'Son, what happened to you?' Too many questions. I put it all in one CD for free."

There's Timbo beats on there, Danjahandz gives a track and Joell Ortiz appears on the track "Watchin' Me." The skit ahead of that record is hilarious, but it's no laughing matter on "Streets Been Watching," though.

"It basically explains how dudes was looking at me sideways," D.O.E. said. "I fell on my face. Dudes was looking at me crazy. I explained everything, how I went from [owning] a Hummer to [riding] the train. Sh-- was deep, D. On 'Bottom of the Barrel,' I talk about my hard times and how it wouldn't stop me. I was gonna get to the top." ...

Shout-out to DJ Skee for banging out a new deal to bring his show to 102.7 KIIS-FM's HD2 New Music Channel. The show airs on Sunday nights.

Fans Call 'TRL' Finale 'A Great Way For The Show To End'

One group even ran into some trouble with the law to be at Sunday's send-off, but 'it was worth it.'

NEW YORK — Sure, "TRL" made the likes of Justin Timberlake, Good Charlotte and Beyoncé household names, but it was the fans that made "TRL" the pop-culture phenomenon it was for the better part of a decade. Day in and day out, it was the fans who tuned in to get the scoop from the artists themselves about everything from music to marriages and everything in between. Not only that, but fans got once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to meet their favorite pop stars, thanks to the show's access.

And fans — as well as "TRL" legends like 50 Cent, Kid Rock, Fall Out Boy, Nelly and original host Carson Daly — flocked to Times Square to say goodbye to the countdown show for "Total Finale Live" on Sunday (November 16).

One group of girls drove all the way from San Diego to be a part of the show's swan song. And although they didn't make it up to the studio, they said it was all worth it to be in New York for the big send-off. "It was an unforgettable moment," one girl told MTV News.

It should have been, considering all the troubles the girls faced to be there. The girls braved thunderstorms, a 42-hour drive and a 10-hour wait just to be in Times Square for the finale. "We came at, like, 6 in the morning, and no one was here, and then we came back at 1 [p.m.]. It was crazy!" the girls said. "We started crying, 'cause we didn't think we could get in."

They didn't get in, but they insisted: "We were just happy to be here in New York City."

Another group of friends had better luck — although they did run into a little trouble with the law. "It felt great [to be here]," one said. "[Our] friend almost got arrested. He hopped the [subway] turnstile and got a $100 ticket."

"It was worth it," another chimed in. "Everyone was screaming. Everyone was bugging out. I got to hug Lloyd Banks. [I was excited we got to see] Beyoncé. We love her to death!"

Two other "TRL" fans admit that the finale was a great way to say goodbye to the countdown show. "I got to see Carson," one said. "We'll miss 'TRL.' We're just happy to celebrate with you guys! It was a great way for the show to end!"

Pete Wentz Gets Baby Advice From Good Charlotte's Joel Madden On 'Total Finale Live'

NEW YORK — While Fall Out Boy rocked "Total Finale Live" with a performance in the middle of New York's Times Square, the group's bassist, Pete Wentz, had the doubtless surreal experience of watching his band perform without him as he was with his very-pregnant-and-reportedly-in-labor wife, Ashlee Simpson. He called into the show to share the moment.

He assured everyone that the baby Wentz has not yet arrived. "Not here yet!" he said. "I went to Chinatown, picked up a bootleg version of 'Twilight' and watched it like, 72, times."

He joked that his bandmates, as well as the rest of the world, will probably know that the baby's arrived when the news hits the Internet. But he assured everyone, "Nothing's happened yet!" Wentz also shared with his fans that the couple have yet to pick out a name for the baby.

He was missed by his bandmates. "It was cool [to perform]," Fall Out Boy singer Patrick Stump said on the show. "I wish Pete was there."

Wentz's friend Joel Madden — who, you may have heard, has a daughter, Harlow, with girlfriend Nicole Richie — had some key advice on the rocker-as-father gig.

"When you're on tour you can be late a lot — but when you're a dad you can't be late," Madden said on the show. "A baby doesn't wait!"

Another baby not waiting for Wentz is the show he hosts, "FNMTV," which will be back for a second season in December. He admitted that hosting isn't as easy as he makes it look.

"It's hard asking people questions," he said. "I'm not good at reading the teleprompter. 'TRL' made me excited about countdowns!"

Paramore Drawing Inspiration From 'Intense Struggles' On Upcoming Album

'We're taking time for ourselves,' frontwoman Hayley Williams says of the band's relaxed schedule.

Since we last spoke to Paramore about their new album — you know, before they stormed the stage at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards — they made a point of saying that things were still "in the very early stages."

Fast-forward to last week, when we caught up with them again, this time backstage at the mtvU Woodie Awards. During our chat, frontwoman Hayley Williams spoke about her favorite "Twilight" character and got us up to speed on just where that new album stood.

And, from the sound of things, not much has changed since early September.

"We're just getting started," Williams laughed. "Like always, we're trying to make a great record for our fans, obviously. It's as simple as that. We've learned a lot, we've gone through a lot — it's been everywhere for everyone to see and read — but I think we've never been in a better spot as a band, personally, than we are right now. We all feel great. Went out to a [T.G.I.] Friday's last night, had a nice meal, a family dinner."

Nice! Wonder if anyone had the jalapeño poppers? And though details are still scarce, Williams did say that she's already writing a bunch of material, most of which deals with the rather, um, dramatic year she and her bandmates have endured.

"With the way I write, I feel like I write better from those kinds of intense struggles. I pull a lot from those experiences," she said. "We've all learned a lot about friendship, we've learned a lot about ourselves, so I'm really excited to see how it turns out."

But just because the subject matter might be a bit darker, does that mean that fans should be worried about things getting all mopey in Paramore-land? Of course not.

"It's going to be energetic. It's a Paramore record," Williams laughed. "We don't always talk about happy super ridiculous things like that — it's cool that our music feels energetic and positive, and we can talk about things that are more than just great feelings."

There's still no firm date for just when Paramore will enter a studio to begin work on the follow up to Riot!, but Williams said that's all part of the plan. They've had a rather rough year, so now they're focusing on recharging — and reconnecting.

"We're off-cycle and we're taking time for ourselves. We're hanging out with family and friends, like I said, and hanging out with each other," she explained. "We're just learning about that side of ourselves — [the side] that's not on the road and not busy and intense all the time. It's amazing, it's really been good for us."

Jesse Camp Recalls Winning VJ Contest, Doing Cardio With Carson Daly At 'TRL' Finale

Posted: 16 Nov 2008 10:39 PM PST

'I had no idea that I could even win it, let alone that it would lead to so much,' Camp tells MTV News.
By James Montgomery with reporting by Tim Kash

Jesse Camp at Total Finale Live
Photo: MTV News

Some of you probably remember Jesse Camp as the squeaky-voiced, spiky-haired street urchin who somehow won 1998's "Wanna Be a VJ" contest on "TRL," rode a wave of fame to D-list celebrity status, released an album on Hollywood Records and then disappeared from the face of the Earth.

If you don't remember him, well, that's OK. You are probably, like, 13 years old. But, luckily, Camp made an appearance Sunday (November 16) on "Total Finale Live," alongside fellow, uh, former VJ Dave Holmes (whom he beat in the "Wanna Be A VJ" contest). Afterward, MTV News caught up with him backstage to get his take on all the "TRL" madness and find out just what he's been up to for the past, well, decade.

"I was only 18 when [I won the contest]. Looking back on it now, it's crazy. I hadn't even been done with high school a full year yet," he laughed. "Even though my Wikipedia page says I didn't graduate high school, and I have, definitely.

"Anyway, it's amazing to be back. There's a real family vibe here," he continued. "The minute you open the door, there's this amazing receptionist who makes you feel right at home. So much of the staff has remained in tact over 10 years. It's essentially the same crew, and that in and of itself is awesome. And to see Carson [Daly] is great, because he's an L.A. refugee like me."

And Daly holds the key to the mystery of just what Camp has been doing with his life recently. Camp says he's used the former "TRL" ringmaster to launch a lucrative career as a personal trainer — of course, that could also be completely false.

"When I heard he was moving to L.A., I basically told him, 'Listen, I'm really into doing personal training now.' Carson and I do a lot of cardio. That's why he's got the new physique," Camp said. "I am a heterosexual man, but I do want to go on record and say I always thought [Daly] was a very good-looking, handsome man. I would be happy to have my sister marry him, if it were in the cards."

Good to know. And though he's probably joking about his current gig, Camp is dead serious about the impact "TRL" has had on his life. It not only got him a level of fame, it also earned him — and his band, the 8th Street Kidz — a recording contract with Hollywood Records. They released one album in 1999, and when it tanked, he and his band were dropped. Still, he holds no hard feelings. In fact, he said it was one of the highlights of his entire life.

"For me, the biggest thing — although it wasn't the biggest of commercial successes — was to premiere a video I had made from a record I had coming out on 'TRL.'
