MTV's Choose or Lose campaign, which strives to engage, inform and empower young voters on the political issues that matter to them most, has teamed up with CNN for a cross-network television event. The special will include a concert designed to mobilize support for our country's newest generation of young veterans, along with news programming on both MTV and CNN that will highlight young veterans' stories of triumph and the issues facing them after they've returned from battle.

"A Night for Vets: An MTV Concert for the BRAVE" — set to be hosted by MTV News correspondent Sway — will be taped in New York on October 23 and air on MTV on October 24. The show's goal is to raise awareness about veterans' causes, including employment, health care, homelessness and education. The concert will feature live performances from 50 Cent, Ludacris and Saving Abel, as well as taped performances from Kanye West, Kid Rock, Angels & Airwaves, Fall Out Boy, Juanes, Nelly and Taylor Swift. Others expected to make appearances during "A Night for Vets" include Beyoncé, Will Ferrell, Common, Fat Joe, Seth Green, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend and Wyclef Jean.

In addition, MTV announced Tuesday (October 14) the launch of the Bill of Rights for American Veterans (or BRAVE), a petition created in partnership with a group of top, nonpartisan veterans' organizations calling on elected officials to support vets' issues and swiftly enact positive legislative changes. Locksley — who will be out on the road as part of MTV's Choose or Lose Tour through November 3 in Vienna, Virginia — are among the supporters of BRAVE. According to the band's guitarist, Kai Kennedy, the Brooklyn-based quartet are encouraging their fans to get behind the petition as well.

"Taking care of our soldiers seems like such a no-brainer, and we will have a petition at each show that we're imploring people to sign," he said, before explaining the petition in more detail. "[BRAVE] highlights five different points that we think veterans that are returning from whatever conflict they're involved with richly deserve."

"It doesn't matter where you stand on the war — we can all agree that young veterans serving our country must receive the benefits they've earned for their sacrifices," said MTV President Van Toffler. "By raising awareness through 'A Night for Vets: An MTV Concert for the BRAVE,' and by launching the BRAVE petition, we aim to elevate these issues and ensure they're a top priority for our government officials."

On October 25 and 26, CNN will air "Anderson Cooper 360: Back From the Battle," which will highlight the challenges facing young vets returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Cooper will be reporting on some of the families left behind to deal with the stress of wartime deployment, as well as the mixed emotions of pride, fear and even detachment they sometimes grapple with. Cooper will also report on Homes for Our Troops, a small, nonprofit organization that started when builder John Gonsalves realized many soldiers were returning with disabilities but no suitable place to live. Cooper will be there as soldiers enter their new homes for the first time. The CNN special will also include footage, interviews and other highlights from the October 23 concert.

"We are honored to help shine a light on the issues facing young veterans and to bring these veterans' stories to both the CNN and MTV audiences," said Jon Klein, president of CNN in the U.S.

T.I. 'Disturbed And Exhilarated' To Hold Top Two Spots On <i>Billboard</i>'s Hot 100

Tip tells MTV News how he put together the red-hot singles 'Live Your Life' and 'Whatever You Like.'
By Shaheem Reid

NEW YORK — What's T.I.'s reaction to having the #1 and #2 songs in the country? Well, it's not what you might expect.

"I was very disturbed and exhilarated at the same time," the King of the South said with a snicker in his hotel room Tuesday afternoon. "It's never nice to be knocked from #1, but it makes it feel better when you're knocked from #1 by your own song. ... Nah, I was joking. For real, it was cool. I didn't even know. Somebody told me in conversation. I was like, 'Oh yeah? Cool.' That's how I felt. Time to move on to the next one."

Almost everything about T.I.'s "Live Your Life" sounds different than what you'd expect from its makers. Producer Just Blaze really veered from the sound of his staples, such as State Property's "Rock the Mic" and Jay-Z's "P.S.A." That yodeling sample is out of left field. Tip, meanwhile, took a talkative flow from his I'm Serious handbook.

"Just Blaze brought it to me," Tip said of the track. "He already demoed the hook and everything. I just laid my verses down and had to figure who I wanted to have on it."

Rihanna got the call.

"I felt like the song had a lot of international appeal," Tip explained. "It was a lot of opportunities there. I knew she was an international juggernaut. It was a no-brainer. The only question was, would she be interested in doing it?"

Before "Live Your Life" landed at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100, "Whatever You Like" held the top spot. It was one of the first records T.I. penned after his house arrest for weapons charges was over.

"I wrote that on the way from the airport," he said. "I really was just playing around. I didn't intend on making a hit single. I was just f---ing around."

Tip doesn't have much playtime lately. He's still filming "Bone Deep" in L.A., while also travelling across the country promoting Paper Trail and carrying out his community service.

"I sat still doing nothing for so long, it enabled me to do more than ever," he said. "I'm blessed. I don't know what it is. I guess I'll rest when I'm dead. I'm not really tired. Onstage, it's adrenaline. I don't feel tired, not even 50 percent of the time. I kinda just learned to deal with it."

Tip is planning his tour now. He just has to lock down who is going on the road with him.

"We're working on that right now," he said. "It's just a matter of who we gonna go out with. It depends, man. It depends a lot on the timing and who's available. It also depends on who's interested. Of course, I'm thinking of as many different genres as we can incorporate into it. That will make it a more diverse tour and make it a little more appealing. But an all hip-hop tour, I wouldn't have a problem with that."

Barack Obama Takes Lead Into Final Presidential Debate With John McCain

Moderator Bob Schieffer promises to press candidates for more details and straight answers.

With less than three weeks left, Senators John McCain and Barack Obama will face off for the final time Wednesday night (October 15) during a debate at Hofstra University on Long Island, New York.

After a first debate some labeled too tame and last week's town hall (which found the pair mixing it up a bit more but still not going after each other aggressively), the 90-minute Hofstra showdown on domestic issues is the final chance for the senators to make their plea to a nationwide audience.

Depending on which polls you believe, McCain is down by as much as 10 points, and Obama is gaining ground in some toss-up states. A lot is at stake for both men, who have toned down some of the more biting attacks of the past few weeks in order to focus on their plans for rescuing the deeply troubled U.S. economy. McCain has vowed to whip Obama's "you know what," while Obama has been eerily mute on his plans, taking the traditional "don't rock the boat" approach of a front-runner.

On Wednesday night, the men will be seated at a table within arm's length of each other, which could spark more personal and intense interactions than either of the first two debates. Moderator Bob Schieffer has vowed to cut the candidates off if they don't answer questions directly and will encourage them to speak directly to one another, something the two previous moderators struggled with.

As we await the final debate, let's take a look back at our scorecard for the second McCain/Obama showdown and see how the candidates fared — and what's in store for Wednesday night.

For McCain

Strengths

» Second debate: We said he is comfortable in the town-hall-style setting, and he was, but at times McCain appeared to be literally wandering around the stage, and his flat jokes about hair replacement and a reference to Obama as "that one" drew harsh criticism. In the end, while he engaged voters face-to-face, McCain failed to take advantage of his mastery of the town hall.

» This debate: McCain has built his reputation on being a fighter that never gives up, and if ever there were a time to lay it all on the line, this is it. Expect McCain to go after Obama's plan to save the economy as more of the same "big-spending liberalism" of the past. Bottom line: McCain has nothing to lose and can only gain points if he is able to plant seeds of doubt in voters' minds.

Weaknesses

» Second debate: McCain failed to show how his campaign suspension helped usher through the $700 billion bailout package, and his plan to buy up bad mortgages — which he unveiled for the country during the debate — was not well-received.

» This debate: McCain has faced criticism — some from his own party — for changing direction several times over the past few weeks in an attempt to steer his campaign ship. He has swung from withering criticism of Obama's ties to 1960s radical William Ayers and questions about the Illinois senator's character — many delivered by vice-presidential running mate Sarah Palin — to telling a crowd this weekend that Obama is a "decent person" with whom he merely disagrees on policy. That comment drew some boos from the audience. Some have even called for dumping Palin from the bill. Being on the ropes means McCain has to be more aggressive and risk coming off as desperate, while Obama can afford to be even-tempered.

What He Needs to Do

» Second debate: McCain failed to give a clear plan for how he would end the Iraq war, and his plan for mortgages did not fly. He also failed to conclusively show how his economic plan will rescue the country.

» This debate: Economy, economy, economy. The next president is going to be facing one of the worst economic situations since the Great Depression, and McCain needs to prove he's the man to lead during that trying time.

What You Can Expect to See

» Second debate: McCain certainly went after Obama more aggressively on the senator's policies and pointed out several times his belief that Obama's plan will raise taxes on many Americans and small businesses. He also planted the seed that Obama's health care plan will "mandate" coverage for some Americans. While he did not bring up Obama's questionable personal associations from the past, it is possible those issues could show up this time.

» This debate: It's unclear if McCain will stick to questioning Obama's policies and readiness or if he will dredge up his past, but some party faithful are hoping he'll do both — and, as he's said before, McCain loves being the underdog and proving the doubters wrong.

For Obama

Strengths

» Second debate: With his lead widening and the race in battleground states like Florida and Ohio tightening, Obama stuck to his plan for economic recovery, pushing hard on his middle-class tax-relief message.

» This debate: Now with a comfortable lead and signs that the McCain campaign has lost a bit of focus, Obama can afford to offer more details on how his economic plan will work. He can also attempt to cast doubt in voters' minds about McCain's ability to lead in a crisis — something Obama already began doing last week, when he referred to his rival as "erratic and uncertain."

Weaknesses

» Second debate: McCain effectively put some doubt in voters' minds about how much Obama's economic plans would cost and raised questions about how he would pay for them. He also made a strong point of discussing his own history of bipartisan legislation, while claiming that Obama almost always votes along party lines.

» This debate: With the bill for the government bailout growing larger by the day, Obama will likely face renewed questions about what programs he is willing to cut and by how much — questions he has offered few specifics on so far. With McCain trailing, Obama — who sometimes comes off as professorial and a bit detached — might also be unprepared for the kind of in-person slugfest he has not yet faced in the general election, as McCain attempts to turn the tide, forcing Obama to hit back in a way he has not always been comfortable with.

What He Needs to Do

» Second debate: Obama weathered the storm of McCain's attacks fairly well last week — never getting angry but forcefully pushing back and counter-attacking.

» This debate: Slow and steady. No major gaffes or "gotcha" lines, no getting goaded into saying something he might regret, and he will likely be declared the victor.

What You Can Expect to See

» Second debate: Obama did crank up his aggressiveness and repeatedly attempted to link McCain to the failed policies of the Bush presidency.

» This debate: Look for Obama to point to McCain's recent pivots as proof that the Arizona senator is unreliable in a crisis.

Check back Wednesday night for a wrap-up of the debate, and head over to the Newsroom blog to weigh in on how you think the candidates did.

On "TRL" Tuesday (October 14), Beyoncé announced that she'll be performing on the show's last episode, "Total Finale Live," on November 16 at 8 p.m.

The singer, who stopped by the show to debut two new music videos, said she owes a lot to the video-countdown show, which debuted back in 1998.

"I can remember being 16 or 17 when they asked us to be on the show, and it was our big moment," she told host Damien Fahey. Although she looks back on the memory fondly, she admits that seeing a teen version of herself was weird. "It's not cool to document your moments at 17," she joked.

Tuesday's episode was dedicated to counting down Beyoncé's greatest video achievements. Even the pop star said it was crazy to see how far she's come over the last decade. "I mean, I dreamed [I would have this kind of success], but I never thought it would be a reality," the former Destiny's Child frontwoman said on the show.

Although she is excited to be a part of the show's fond farewell, she has yet to decide on a song. "What should I perform?" she asked the audience.

The singer also talked a bit about her new singles — the midtempo ballad "If I Were a Boy" and the dance number "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" — both of which will appear on her November 18 album, I Am ... . "I recorded over 70 songs, and I took a lot of time and made sure it was something that would last forever, something that never goes out," she said.

Beyoncé described "Single Ladies" as being "upbeat and fun," while she described her other single as "folk music."

"I just wanted people to get to know me and the two extremes," she said.

You might want to set up a Google alert for your phone just in case, but Janet Jackson's people say this time it's for real. After several attempts to get back on the road while recovering from a previously undisclosed illness, Ms. Jackson is finally slated to restart her Rock Witchu Tour Wednesday night (October 15) in Washington, D.C., after being out of commission since September 29.

According to E! Online, Jackson's manager said the singer will play the capitol's Verizon Center, marking her first gig since canceling nine shows to deal with an illness they're finally willing to disclose.

"After a thorough medical evaluation, it has been confirmed that Janet's symptoms are being caused by a rare form of migraine called vestibular migraine, or migraine-associated vertigo, for which she is currently receiving treatment," said a statement released by Jackson's camp, according to E!.

Jackson, 42, first fell ill during sound check for a September 29 show in Montreal and ended up postponing shows in Montreal; Philadelphia; Boston; Greensboro, North Carolina; Atlanta; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Uncasville, Connecticut; Verona, New York; and New York City. All of those shows will be rescheduled, E! reports. She was originally expected to reboot the tour on Saturday in Connecticut, but canceled that show and one slated for Monday in Verona on "doctor's orders."

"Janet wanted very much to resume her tour so as not to disappoint her fans, but she continued to suffer from vertigo and could not perform," her manager, Kenneth Crear, said. "She's a world-class entertainer and needs to be at the top of her game to give her fans the show they expect. She's feeling much better and is ready to hit the road again to finish the tour."

Madonna And Guy Ritchie To Announce Divorce 'Imminently': Report

British tabloid says couple will split before their eighth anniversary in December.
By Gil Kaufman

Just months after Madonna denied that her marriage was in trouble, a British tabloid is reporting that she and husband Guy Ritchie are set to announce their split, "imminently."

The Sun reported on Wednesday (October 15) that a "highly placed source" confirmed that Madonna, 50, and Ritchie, 40, "just couldn't live together any more" and could "no longer bear to live with the pretence" of being a happily married couple.

While the singer's longtime publicist, Liz Rosenberg, could not be reached for comment, her London-based publicist told Reuters, "No comment."

Ritchie was not on hand in New York on Monday night at the premiere of Madonna's directorial debut, "Filth and Wisdom." When MTV News caught up with the singer at the event, she seemed in good spirits and showed no signs of any strife, though she did take time to explain her recent string of disses to Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

When similar rumors about a divorce emerged earlier this summer — including allegations that Madonna had become involved with New York Yankees player Alex Rodriguez — the couple, who have been married for almost eight years, denied the reports.

"My husband and I are not planning on getting a divorce. I know Alex Rodriguez through Guy Oseary, who manages both of us," Madonna said in a statement at the time, during which Rodriguez was going through his own divorce proceedings. "I brought my kids to a Yankee game. I am not romantically involved in any way with Alex Rodriguez. I have nothing to do with the state of his marriage or what spiritual path he may choose to study."

Around the same time, rumors also emerged that Madonna had hired high-powered divorce attorney Fiona Shackleton, who represented Paul McCartney in his recent divorce proceedings.

The couple has a son, Rocco, and they adopted another boy, David Banda, from Malawi in 2006. Madonna has a 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes, from a previous relationship. The Sun reported that tensions between the couple have grown over the amount of time they devote to their respective careers and over Madonna's wish to adopt another child. The paper reported that the couple initially wanted to wait until next year to announce their separation — after Madonna wraps up her Sticky and Sweet Tour — but now want to finalize it before Christmas, which would have marked their eight wedding anniversary.

"It wasn't a matter of 'if' but 'when,' " the unnamed source reportedly told the paper. "They tried hard over the last few months, but their fighting was getting out of control. The final straw came before Madonna started her U.S. tour. Madonna wanted a highly stage-managed separation, with their split being announced when it was convenient for her. She didn't want the distraction while she is trying to concentrate on her tour."

The source went on to say that after a "series of rows" around Ritchie's birthday, Madonna stormed out of the house and Ritchie declared that they had to split now. The paper reported that Ritchie has flown back home from France, where he's filming "Sherlock Holmes" with Robert Downey Jr., to break the news to his parents. The couple is reportedly worth more than $520 million, most of which belongs to Madonna, with Ritchie bringing $35 million to the table. They have homes in London, Los Angeles and New York, as well as a 1,200-acre spread in Wiltshire, England.

The Curious Case Of The Britney Spears Comeback, In <i>Bigger Than The Sound</i>

Posted: 15 Oct 2008 05:00 AM PDT

It doesn't appear that Brit is going anywhere anytime soon.
By James Montgomery

Britney Spears in "Womanizer"

On The Record: Britney Spears Cannot Be Stopped, No Matter How Hard You Try

I'm beginning to think I was wrong about this Britney Spears character. See, last month, I wrote a column that basically asked "Can Britney Ever Be Britney Again?" (Short answer: No, if only because no one can be Britney Spears again.) And while I'm still sticking by that assumption — after all, the deck is clearly stacked against her, in ways that are not at all her fault (the state of the industry, the splintering of the media, etc.) — it would appear that I was way off base about one thing: It does not appear that Britney is going anywhere anytime soon.

This is because Britney Spears is indestructible. She is made of Teflon and adamantium and cannot be stopped. Ever. She is impervious to trends or time or taste (which sort of makes her like the Highlander) and will be here long after you and I are gone.

This started to become apparent to me when I read the comments on my initial column, the majority of which came from fans who were either mildly upset ("BETTER THAN EVER!! EVERYBODY'S TALKIN' ALL THE STUFFS ABOUT BRITNEY. WHY DON'T THEY JUST LET HER LIVE?") or angered to the point of death wishes and homophobia ("This is f---ing retarded!! Britney Spears is a living legend! She will be better than ever. STFU, stupid f----t. I bet you like Christina, loser. I hope you die.").

And then, Britney kicked her comeback into full gear. First, she announced that she had a new album on the way and she'd be promoting it with the "all access" (snicker) documentary "Britney Spears: For the Record." And to top it all off, there was the debut of her uncensored "Womanizer" video, which featured her in all manners of undress and was apparently deemed "too hot for '20/20' " (John Stossel's mustache was outraged!). And suddenly, the Brit-sanity was off the charts.

It seemed possible that Spears' entire fanbase could spontaneously combust at any moment (perhaps this is the cause of the latest round of California wildfires). After all, according to their logic, Britney was back, returned from the hereafter to silence all her critics and reclaim the pop throne. She had beaten her demons and emerged stronger and sexier, and there wasn't a mean-spirited blog or jealous music critic (or an increasingly disinterested record-buying populace) who could stop her.

And with logic like that, who needs logic? It's gotten to the point where Britney fans won't even listen to suggestions that the Spears of 2008 is slightly less globe-uniting than the Spears of 2000. To them, nothing has changed. There were no upskirt shots or messy divorces, no shaved heads or stints in rehabilitation facilities. In their minds, no one has left the Britney Camp, and there is no chance her new album might underwhelm, both critically and financially. To be a die-hard Britney Spears fan in 2008 is akin to being a Republican or a Democrat: There is a defensiveness in it, an anger. There is no other alternative to consider, because the alternative is completely wrong.

And this is why Britney Spears will never leave us. Somehow, she has become vital, she has become iconic, and — most of all — she has become infallible. Just take a look at fan reactions to "Womanizer," a song that kind of sounds like what would happen if you threw Mike Jones and an air-raid siren into a blender ... and not in a good way. (I will get between 50 and 100 angry e-mails/comments about that statement, I guarantee it.) To them, the song is brilliant, a clarion call to the "haterz" out there and the best thing she's ever done. In the eyes of her fans, Britney can never do wrong, which pretty much guarantees that she'll live forever, in one form or another. And to that end, just by coming back, she's already written the next chapter in her career. She's a success, and the results — album sales, airplay for singles, tour receipts — are inconsequential.

Of course, none of that is wrong in any way. Who am I to say what people should or shouldn't like? After all, I wrote a paean to Phish last week. But Brit fans should probably realize that none of it means that Britney will ever be the kind of superstar she was for the first half of this decade. The fact remains that there are fewer record-buying individuals left on the planet — and even fewer Britney Spears fans. She will always have her loyal armies, she will always have those inexhaustible supporters, but the rest are gone for good.

Which is why, despite mounting evidence to the contrary, I still believe that my initial assessment of her comeback was correct. Britney will sell a few records out of the gate (probably debuting at #1), her singles will splash big (probably on "Gossip Girl") then inevitably fade, her tour will launch with much fanfare and some bit of trivial controversy, and then everyone will move on. This is just the way things happen these days. A comeback is a relative term ... so is a career.

And to that point, I'll freely admit to having underestimated Britney. She inspires in ways I do not understand, she survives in ways I cannot comprehend, and she endures. She has outlasted almost every one of her contemporaries, she has become a measuring stick and a cautionary tale and an icon. Will she be the next Madonna? Probably not. The next Cher? All crazy, somewhat diluted, grammatically adventurous signs point to "Yes."

DJ AM — who, along with Travis Barker, was one of the only survivors of a plane crash last month — is on the mend after sustaining second- and third-degree burns to his face and left arm. The DJ seems to be recuperating relatively quickly, as he's been tapped to perform with Jay-Z in Hollywood Wednesday night.

According to his publicist, Jenni Weinman, AM will serve as the rapper's DJ during his set, which will mark the reopening of the Palladium Theater. While Weinman couldn't provide a complete list of Jay's tour dates, she did say AM would be accompanying the rapper on the road to act as his DJ for the entire tour.

Jay-Z has only two other dates scheduled on his calendar: October 16 in Houston and October 25 in Charlottesville, Virginia.

AM (born Adam Goldstein) told People magazine that the gig with Jay, whom he called "the greatest rapper in the world," is "the biggest thing that's happened in my career."

AM was released from an Atlanta burn center less than a week after the September 19 crash, and doctors expect he and Barker will eventually make full recoveries.

Wednesday's show with Jay-Z will be the DJ's first since the crash, which claimed the lives of four people: the plane's two pilots; Barker's assistant, Chris "Lil Chris" Baker; and Barker's bodyguard, Charles "Che" Still. Mark Ronson, Steve Aoki, Mix Master Mike and other DJs are hosting a party for DJ AM Tuesday night (October 14), the proceeds of which will benefit the families of the accident's victims.

Britney Spears Reportedly Signs Deal With AEG Live To Produce Tour

Pop star is one step closer to hitting the road in 2009, according to E! Online.
By Gil Kaufman

The last time Britney Spears attempted a comeback, with 2007's Blackout album, she didn't tour, didn't do any interviews and didn't really promote the album beyond appearing in a few videos.

This time, though, Spears appears poised for a true return. According to E! Online, the singer, who said last month that she planned to hit the road to support her upcoming Circus album, has signed a deal with major promoter AEG Live to produce her new stage show.

E!'s unnamed source did not say when an official announcement would be made — and reps for Spears and AEG Live could not be reached for comment by MTV News at press time — but given Spears' comments on New York's Z100 a few weeks ago that she hopes to tour the world in 2009, the reported hookup makes sense. AEG is the same company that booked sold-out multi-night runs for Prince and the Spice Girls at the O2 Arena in London and recently handled sold-out world tours for Bon Jovi and Justin Timberlake.

Spears appears to have overcome some of the personal problems that caused her life and career to veer off the tracks in recent years and has already made a strong comeback bid with the seductive video for "Womanizer," the first single from Circus. The clip, in which Spears appears naked, has been too-hot-to-handle for some outlets, and some fans have already predicted the success of Britney 2.0.

"Britney is by far the Madonna of our generation, and through the good and bad she just keeps on doing it again and again," one fan, dalton1202, commented after MTV posted the uncensored version of the video.

"She's amazing," Sannah22 wrote. "And I love how she steers the wheel with her foot!"

And headoverheels echoed many others' sentiments, saying, "I cannot believe she is finally back. I love her, always have and always will. This song and video rock."

Spears will finally break her silence about her past few tumultuous years on November 30, when she stars in a 90-minute MTV documentary, tentatively titled "For the Record," in which the singer promises to "set the record straight."

The nominees for the 2008 American Music Awards were announced Tuesday (October 14), with Alicia Keys leading the pack with five nods, including one for Artist of the Year. The AMAs have been scheduled for November 23 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles and will air live on ABC with Jimmy Kimmel as host.

Keys — who is also in the running for Favorite Female Artist - Pop or Rock Music; Favorite Female Artist - Soul/ Rhythm & Blues Music; Favorite Album - Pop or Rock Music; and Favorite Album - Soul/ Rhythm & Blues Music for her latest LP, As I Am — is the sole female up for Artist of the Year, facing off against Coldplay, the Eagles and Lil Wayne.

Coldplay and the Eagles both earned four AMA nominations, including Favorite Band, Duo or Group - Pop or Rock Music, as did Daughtry. Coldplay's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends was nominated for Favorite Album - Pop or Rock Music, along with the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden. Coldplay's other nom came in the Favorite Artist - Alternative Rock Music category, which also includes the Foo Fighters and Linkin Park, while the Eagles were honored with a Favorite Artist - Adult Contemporary Music nomination.

Wayne's Tha Carter III got a nod for Favorite Album - Rap/ Hip-Hop Music, (along with Jay-Z's American Gangster and Kanye West's Graduation) and another for Favorite Male Artist - Rap/ Hip-Hop Music. He'll face off against West and Flo Rida in that category.
