Is Butch Vig going to be producing the new Green Day album? Well according to Shirley Manson, the answer is yes.

Last week, Manson — who recorded four albums with Vig in the band Garbage — appeared on "Last Call With Carson Daly" to promote her new role on Fox's "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles." During the interview, Daly asked Manson whether she believed there would ever be a new Garbage album (the band went on "indefinite hiatus" in 2005). Her answer certainly got the attention of Green Day fans.

"I don't know, to be honest. We're sort of doing our different things," Manson said. "I'm doing the TV show, Butch is producing Green Day, so he's busy, so we'll see."

Manson's comment seemed to confirm rumors that began swirling back in August, when several sites reported that Vig — the man behind such albums as Nirvana's Nevermind, the Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream and AFI's Sing the Sorrow — was producing the follow-up to Green Day's landmark American Idiot album, along with engineer Joe McGrath (who worked with Vig on Sorrow and Against Me!'s New Wave album).

At the time, no one from Green Day's camp said anything about those rumors, and, well, it looks like they're sticking to that policy now. Neither the band nor its label, Reprise, would comment about the situation when contacted by MTV News, and attempts to reach Vig himself through his studio, Smart, proved unsuccessful.

Aside from Vig's rumored involvement, little else is actually known about Green Day's new album. In May 2006, the guys wrote on their site that they were beginning work on a series of "cool projects," news that was followed by a spokesperson for Reprise confirming that writing for the new album had begun in an East Bay studio. There was no new information until late 2007, when Green Day reappeared under the guise of the Foxboro Hot Tubs.

T.I. Gets Political As Guest Editor Of &lt;i&gt;King&lt;/i&gt; &#8212; No Joke!

'Cut your PlayStation off and turn to CNN and listen to these people,' Tip says to young voters.

T.I. might have phoned some things in, but he didn't dial it in as the guest editor in chief for King magazine's November issue — the man with the #1 album in the country gave the publication his all.

"It's only right that King would indeed have a King as editor in chief," T.I. said in a statement. "I guess this is, indeed, my magazine. Understand that. ... Keep it pimpin'."

"We always intended to work with Tip on a bigger level," King's regular E.I.C., Jermaine Hall, told MTV News. "He had done [the fashion section] Tag for us in the past and other sections of the magazine and always did a really good job. He was always thorough with it. So when we started the discussion for this issue, we saw he was taking it seriously. He really wanted to run the magazine for an issue. That was the deciding factor."

The issue — with Reagan Gomez-Preston, the co-star from Tip's current video, as the cover girl — has a political theme. Besides his guest editing, some of T.I.'s thoughts show up in print, such as a dream collaboration with T-Pain and blunders made by President Bush over the past eight years. One of the mag's highlights is a roundtable discussion moderated by the Parker Report's Erik Parker. Tip and other notables, such as Kevin Powell and Yung Berg, discuss a myriad of topics, including voting.

"When I'm speaking to young people," T.I. said, "and they say, 'Who you voting for?' I say, 'Well, what you think's wrong with the country? What problems do you need to be fixed? OK, then cut your PlayStation off and turn to CNN and listen to these people. Listen to each of the candidates' platforms, and whoever you think is speaking passionately and intelligently and will do the things you think need changed, that's who you vote for.' It ain't as easy as saying, 'T.I., OK, tell me who to vote for.' "

"I got a phone call on my cell from Tip saying, 'Yo, I'm at the roundtable,' " Hall recalled. " 'I'm gonna hit this point, that point. What else do you need me to take care of for the issue?' It was his suggestion to grab Reagan for the cover. He went far and beyond really doing his job for the magazine. It reminded me when Bono had the guest-editor spot for Vanity Fair — dude went in. It was very important for me with this issue to be able to really reach the 18-, 19-, 20-, 21-year-olds, those people who weren't so politically aware in the past. With his reach and influence, it was really a no-brainer."

You want to talk about reach — Tip just celebrated his third consecutive #1 album, with Paper Trail debuting atop the charts Wednesday. He also has the current # 1 song in the country with "Live Your Life" — that track actually bumped Tip's other smash, "Whatever You Like," down a spot this week. Tip and Rihanna recently filmed the video for "Live Your Life," and it should be out soon.

Beyonce Finally Opens Up About Marriage To Jay-Z

Posted: 07 Oct 2008 11:25 PM PDT

'What Jay and I have is real. It's not about interviews or getting the right photo op,' the singer says.
By Jennifer Vineyard

Beyoncé usually spends a lot of time not talking about Jay-Z. Even magazines that tout some exclusive interview in which she's finally opened up only have a snippet or two, and usually they are about her decision to not talk.

So you would have every reason to be wary when yet another magazine — this time Essence — comes along and claims that the singer has broken her infamous silence. Except in this case, she has.

After several pages about Beyoncé's decision not to speak publicly about her private life — peppered with lots of so-called expert opinion from an associate professor of communications and anthropology, a blogger, an unnamed media insider, the singer's acting coach and even her mother — the magazine finally gets down to business.

(Read what Beyoncé told Essence about her upcoming album and movie roles here.)

Up to this point, Beyoncé led the magazine to believe she wouldn't be really opening up to them either: "Interviewing Beyoncé, who has admitted she dislikes the process, is a little like talking to your mother about sex. There may be a pretense of open communication, but the subtext is clear: Are you seriously going to ask me that? ... For now, Beyoncé and Jay-Z's relationship exists in that no-man's land where they won't give us anything and we can't get enough."

So at first, Essence settles for the usual discussion about her effort to maintain her privacy, which Beyoncé claims is so she can keep some mystery, stay sane and control her brand — though not necessarily in that order.

"I feel that, especially now, with the Internet and paparazzi and camera phones, it's so difficult to maintain mystery," she told the magazine. "And that's so important. Even in a relationship, I feel like not being that accessible is really important. If you think about Prince or Michael Jackson, or any superstars, you couldn't see them when they got off their planes or when they got out of the pool and didn't comb their hair. It's great that people see we're not perfect. But it's almost impossible to have superstars now, because people will never get enough. And it's not even about my music. It's about all the things that people imagine about me in their minds. But I can't satisfy everyone. I know that Jay and I probably do inspire people. And I appreciate people feeling proud. But this is the only way I've been able to stay sane, so why would I start talking now?

"[Not speaking] controls your brand," she continued. "It controls what you want to put out there and kind of forces people to talk about what you want them to talk about."

But then Beyoncé lets it slip that it was a joint decision with her husband to keep quiet. "We decide everything," she told the magazine. "My word is my word. What Jay and I have is real. It's not about interviews or getting the right photo op. It's real."

But the writer persisted. And normally, this would be just the thing to get Beyoncé to shut down or call off the interview or find some excuse to change the subject. Instead, she groaned. "You're gonna get me in trouble," she complained, and then launched into a slew of details about the couple's private wedding that the public has been craving for her to acknowledge — to the point that some have referred to it as a secret wedding, despite the very public-record nature of these things.

Beyoncé tells the magazine that the wedding was very small and intimate, because she's not a "traditional" woman and having it be "her day" wasn't something she needed. Being a star and walking the red carpet has diminished the need for that over the years. "It's been my day so many days already," she told the magazine.

She didn't want an engagement ring because "people put too much emphasis on that. It's just material, and it's just silly to me," she said.

Instead of just getting wedding rings, the couple also got matching tattoos of the Roman numeral four on their ring fingers, so if they take off the bands for work or to go swimming, a mark of some form is still there. (The number four is special to the couple because her birthday is September 4, his birthday is December 4, and their wedding anniversary is April 4.)

While she wouldn't discuss how Hova proposed, or even if he proposed ("We've been together a long time. We always knew it would happen," is all she would offer), Beyoncé did reveal this: They plan to have kids. Someday. And perhaps as soon as after she puts out this album.

Travis Barker Says He's 'Thankful To Be Alive' In First Post-Crash Interview

'I am doing the best I can possibly be,' drummer says of recovery.

Travis Barker said he's "thankful to be alive" after the plane crash in Columbia, South Carolina, last month that killed four people and seriously injured him and DJ AM. The former Blink-182 drummer opens up about the accident in the new issue of Us Weekly.

"I hate planes," he said. "My biggest fear ever is to be involved in a plane crash, so when that happened ... well, I'm just thankful to be alive! I'm just grateful to be here at all." Barker then choked up a bit, the mag said.

Barker left a hospital in Georgia last week and returned to Los Angeles via bus with his father and his ex-wife, Shanna Moakler. Just days before, DJ AM had been released from the hospital and is currently recovering at home. The crash killed Barker's assistant, Chris Baker, and his bodyguard, Charles Still, as well as the plane's two crew members.

Barker is currently at the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles, where he is receiving treatment for second- and third-degree burns.

"I am doing the best I can possibly be. I'm so anxious to get out of here," the 32-year-old drummer said. "I was in Georgia at the hospital over there and was scared to death to even get on an airplane again, so I had Shanna and my father come out and meet me and we took a bus back to L.A. I've just been in surgery after surgery. I have third-degree burns basically from my feet up to my waist and both hands. One of my hands has second-degree burns and one has third-degree burns."

Barker said he's anxious to spend more time with his and Moakler's children, Landon, 5, and Alabama, 2. "Shanna brought them down a couple times, but not on the basis that I normally would [see them]," he said. "Normally I wake up with them at six in the morning and take them to school. I'm just taking this one day at a time and listening to all the doctors' orders."

One big change that Barker has made since the accident is changing his diet. He's broken with his vegetarian regimen in the interest of helping his recovery. "Because I was a vegetarian, for my first three surgeries, it was hard to get any of my grafts to take to my real skin," he said. "I have such low levels of protein. I need protein from food rather than just protein supplements. I changed my diet. I would do anything I possibly could [to get better]. They said, 'There's a possibility you might heal faster if you do eat meat or just change your eating habits.' So I did. I don't regret it at all, because I feel so much better!"

The change may already be having a positive effect on his recovery. "I just got out of surgery maybe an hour ago," he said. "They took pieces from my back and pieces of skin from my thighs and they grafted them onto my feet, my heels and my right forearm and it actually stuck!"

Asked about reports that earlier surgery was not as successful, Barker said, "It was a misunderstanding. I woke up from my surgery with no pain medication at one point! Imagine how that would feel! But the doctors here are amazing."

As for how much longer he might be in the hospital, Barker optimistically said it shouldn't be more than two weeks if all goes well. "I hope not much longer. I sit here and read books and watch TV," he said. "I have had outstanding support from my family and friends. Shanna has been here as much as she could be. I couldn't do it without them."

Not only is he optimistic about his recovery, but Barker is ready to get back to work, and most importantly his family. "I can't wait to get to work on my record. I lost one of my best friends in this crash," he said. "I can't wait to get back to writing and expressing myself, get back into the swing of things. I have so much stuff just jumbled in my head right now. I can't wait!

"I'm trying to have a quick recovery and play the drums again and be able to hold my kids again," he added.

Franz Ferdinand Capture Just The Right Sound, Thanks To -- Gulp! -- Human Remains

'I can't think of any records with human bones,' Alex Kapranos says of band's new percussion instruments.

When Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos and guitarist Nick McCarthy walked away from an auction last year in their hometown of Glasgow, Scotland, carrying a large wooden box containing human skeletal remains recovered from a dead doctor's office, they never imagined they'd use the bones for anything more than morbid studio decorum. But as it turns out, you can capture some pretty awesome percussive sounds by jangling a femur across the rim of a pelvic bone.

"I remember we were working on a song called 'Kiss Me,' and we wanted to have a real dry, percussive sound in the chorus," Kapranos recalled during a break from the mastering of the band's forthcoming record, tentatively titled Tonight, which will feature guest vocals by Gorillaz collaborator Rosie Wilson. "And we had this skeleton in a box that just ended up sitting in the corner of the studio, and we all sort of looked at it, and decided to experiment with it. Nick had the hands and was clapping the bones together. [Drummer] Paul [Thomson] was working with the pelvis bone and a femur. We put the teeth in a glass jar and rattled that about. We smacked the ribs together and we got this really weird, f---ed-up kind of a sound that was wicked. I can't think of any records with human bones on it."

Turning human bones into percussive instruments was all part of Franz Ferdinand's reaction to the way records are made these days, where sounds are often tinkered with after the fact, through a computer program. The band wanted to manipulate sound in as natural and physical a way as possible, which means Franz's forthcoming LP — which could be in stores as early as January — will be one of their most experimental.

"We were finding new ways of getting the sounds on the record," Kapranos explained. "One of the most exciting moments for me was when we were recording the song 'What She Came For.' We wanted to play with the Doppler effect — like when you have an ambulance passing by, and the siren changes tone as it approaches. I love that sound, and one of the rooms we have in our place in Glasgow was part of an old town hall, so it has 50-foot ceilings. One day, Nick climbed up to the rafters and lowered a microphone cable down to the ground. We put the guitar amp on its back and turned it up, full whack."

Kapranos said that as he played his guitar, producer Dan Carey hurled the microphone through the air — from one end of the room to the other — and over the amplifier. "The sound we ended up with sounds like a cross between a guitar and a World War II dive-bomber," Kapranos said excitedly. "It's wicked."

Franz began writing material for the follow-up to 2005's You Could Have It So Much Better more than a year ago, after taking a much-needed break from being Franz. They took their time with the songs, sometimes popping into hole-in-the-wall bars to test out the new material on an audience. It helped them determine which songs worked and which were "utter crap," and when they knew which tracks were going to make the final cut, they hit the studio with Carey, whom the singer likened to a "mischievous professor."

At times, Franz left the confines of the studio to experiment. Some songs they recorded in the studio's basement with just a single microphone, to capture the live energy of the tracks. And it didn't become apparent to Kapranos until the band was finished recording just what Tonight is all about.

"This record is a nighttime record, and all the songs relate to different nighttime vibes and activities," he said. "It wasn't a deliberate or a considered decision, but a reflection of where our lives are at and the way we were living, and it came through in the music when we were playing. There's definitely that vibe to it, like that part of the night where you're on the dance floor, but also those moments where you're psyching yourself up when you're about to go out for a bit of a hedonistic night out. There's also the other moments: The song 'Bite Hard' is full-on escapism, almost like a chase scene, and by the time the new version of 'Lucid Dreams' rolls around, it's like a full-on freak-out. By the end of the record, it's like those moments where you're sort of sitting alone in your room at the end of a crazy night, wishing whatever's in your system would be out of your system."

Generally speaking, though, Kapranos didn't find Tonight — which will also feature the songs "Ulysses," "Turn It On" and "Katherine, Kiss Me" — to be a challenging record to create.

"Right from the beginning, we set out to make a record that had joy in it," he said. "Even if you're singing about the darkest of subjects or tragedy, there has to be joy in the performance. There has to be that energy in the performance. If it's not there when you put it down on the record, it won't be there when you hear it back through the speakers. Sometimes, you've got to have the guts to reject all of the high-fidelity principals that should be involved in making a record."

Britney Spears assumes multiple sassy personalities in the video for her new single "Womanizer," according to photos released by Jive Records. The video, shot last month in Los Angeles, is set to debut this Friday at 10 p.m. on ABC's "20/20."

In one scene from the clip, directed by Joseph Khan (who helmed "Stronger" and "Toxic"), Spears sports her signature blond hair, a sexy bedtime robe and bra. In another photo from the shoot, we see Britney going for a sexy/scary businesswoman look in horn-rimmed glasses, a black bob, leather skirt and striped sweater. She appears to be about to give her co-worker either a lap dance or a beating.

(Check out photos of Britney's "Womanizer" video here.)

In a final still from the video, Spears reprises her role as a waitress, but unlike the perky pigtailed server she played in (You Drive Me) Crazy,"" this time she vamps it up in black leather and a brunet wig.

The song is the first single off her new album, Circus, set to come out on December 2, her 27th birthday. "Womanizer" made its radio debut on September 26 on New York's Z100. The following week, Spears stopped by the station to talk about the song. "['Womanizer' is] basically saying, 'We know what you're up to.' It's about guys cheating on girls," she said. "It's a girl anthem. That's why I like it. So, hopefully, the fans will see it that way too!"

She also revealed that she has plans to tour in support of Circus in 2009. "Oh, definitely next year," she said when asked about touring possibilities. "Probably around the world."

Ciara Invites T-Pain, Ne-Yo, Missy Elliott Aboard Her <i>Fantasy Ride</i>

Ciara keeps the female-empowerment message alive on "Go Girl," the first single from her upcoming album, Fantasy Ride. The R&B songbird said the song, which features T-Pain on the hook, is all about "someone that's strong, determined and independent."

"T-Pain is a really cool guy, so I enjoyed the whole process," she told MTV News on the set of the video. "I just wanted to make it a bit easier, 'cause the Fantasy Ride is a world of fantasy and fun. There's just so many different worlds I want to take my fans."

T-Pain had mutual love for Ciara. "The record came together basically with me and Ciara working for days in the studio, and we got pressured to ... make a song," he said. "The one we finished was 'Go Girl.' We had a lot of fun. She was dancing. I was trying to dance as good as her!"

Ciara is preaching control on the song and in her professional life. The 22-year-old singer took the reins as the album's executive producer, getting everyone from Ne-Yo to Missy Elliott to Young Jeezy to make cameos. "I have a song with Missy, and it's crazy and out of this world," she said. "The energy is to the 10th power again."

Ciara also invited some fresh faces aboard the Fantasy Ride. "I worked with Danja [and] a lot of new producers, too, which I'm really excited about," she said. "There's nothing like new, fresh talent. This album has opened up a little bit with different vibes and energies. I wanted to bring in different writers. I'm excited."

The biggest theme fans will find on the album is Ciara's burgeoning womanhood (something that caused controversy during her recent cover shot for Vibe, for which the singer insisted she was clothed and the magazine insisted she wasn't). "I'm definitely embracing myself more and more each day as a woman," she said. "It's a feeling you can't really describe fully, but I know I feel good, and I'm learning more about myself every day as a woman."

Paris Hilton is totally running for fake president, and she totally wants your fake vote. Totally.

That's the message in a video posted early Wednesday (October 8) on FunnyOrDie.com, which features Hilton seeking political advice from "one of our greatest fake presidents," Martin Sheen, who played president Josiah Bartlett on NBC's long-running White House drama "The West Wing."

See more Paris Hilton videos at Funny or Die

In the clip, which takes place in the kitchen during "a pre-party for the party before the afterparty," Hilton and Sheen discuss such pressing fake issues as "FoPo" (or "foreign policy," for those of you who don't speak Paris-ese) and the economy, with P stating that she favors a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq and lowering interest rates to bail out homeowners.

"This is the biggest depression since 'The Notebook,' " Hilton says. "How about helping the people who are losing their homes? How about lowering inflated interest rates so it's not impossible for them to pay their mortgage? I know its not as much money for the banks, but it's better than no money at all. Just ask MC Hammer."

Sheen proclaims, "Loves it," and then tells Hilton not to worry, because she's "going to make a great fake president."

Hilton then says, "America was at its best when it was on NBC," to which Sheen replies, "Wait till it's on MTV" (hey, that's us!). Hilton then turns to the camera and proclaims, "See you at the fake inauguration, bitches!"

The clip is the second one Hilton has done for the humor Web site. Back in August, she caused a sensation when she posted her response to an early John McCain campaign ad comparing Barack Obama to Hilton and Britney Spears.

Metallica To Perform At Los Premios MTV Latin America 2008

October 16 awards show in Mexico marks band's first North American TV appearance of the year.

In the weeks leading up to the release of their latest LP, Death Magnetic, Metallica did very little in the way of actual promotion for the effort. They didn't make the late-night TV rounds or appear on any talk shows. The album's September 12 release date came and went with very little fanfare — and the record still went on to scan close to 500,000 units in just three days, earning Metallica their fifth-consecutive chart-topping debut.

Four weeks later, the album has passed the million-sold mark and will be at #5 on the Billboard albums chart next week. And even though they're not hurting for publicity, Metallica will make their first North American live television performance of the year (they have appeared on TV in the U.K.). On October 16, the band will take the stage when the annual Los Premios MTV Latino America 2008 take over Guadalajara, Mexico. The awards, which will be held inside the Auditorio Telmex, will air live at 9 p.m. ET, only on MTV Tr3s. Metallica will be performing the first single from Death Magnetic, "The Day That Never Comes."

"Metallica is the biggest hard rock band in the world — period," said Jose Tillan, senior vice president of content and music for MTV/VH1 Latin America. "We are honored to have them play at Premios this year. If you have never seen Metallica play, you are in for a heart-stopping experience. My ears are still ringing from the last time I saw them live a couple of years ago!" Others acts to appear at this year's awards include performers Tokio Hotel, Paramore, Katy Perry, the Kooks, Moderatto, Calle 13, Café Tacuba, Julieta Venegas and others; presenters include Gene Simmons, Flavor Flav, Tila Tequila and 30 Seconds to Mars.

And if catching Metallica's sole television performance of 2008 isn't enough to get you to tune in, consider the award being handed out this year for Song of the Year. The Jonas Brothers' "When You Look Me in the Eyes" is in the running, along with Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl," Juanes' "Me Enamora," Tokio Hotel's "Monsoon" and Julieta Venegas' "El Presente." The JoBros were also nominated in the Best International Pop Artist category, with Amy Winehouse, Fergie, Madonna and Rihanna, while Fall Out Boy, 30 Seconds to Mars, Coldplay, Panic at the Disco and Paramore are all in the running for Best International Rock Artist.

The Jonases may also walk away from the October 16 event with another award for Best New International Artist. Alizée, Katy Perry, Paramore and Tokio Hotel are also nominated in that category.
