Federal investigators are focusing on the possibility that a blown tire could have contributed to the jet crash that seriously injured DJ AM (born Adam Goldstein) and Travis Barker and killed four others on Friday. According to CNN, investigators found evidence that one of the jet's tires may have blown moments before takeoff at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport in Columbia, South Carolina.

National Transportation Safety Board spokeswoman Debbie Hersman said investigators listening to the jet's cockpit voice recorder heard a sound "consistent with a tire blowout."

Hersman said that the pilot and co-pilot told air traffic controllers that they heard a tire burst and tried to abort the takeoff, according to the Associated Press. That conversation between the plane's crew and air traffic controllers was captured on the voice recorder that was recovered from the wreckage "The crew attempted to reject the takeoff but was unable to stop the aircraft before it departed the runway," Hersman said.

The Learjet 60 was trying to take off at 11:53 p.m. on Friday, a short time after AM and Barker had performed in front of 10,000 fans at a free outdoor show in Columbia's Five Points district. The plane skidded off the end of the 8,600-foot runway and crashed through light towers and an antenna array before crossing a five-lane highway and coming to rest in an embankment, where it burst into flames.

CNN cites Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen as saying the twin-engine private jet was cleared for takeoff for the flight to Van Nuys, California, and that no other aircraft were on the runway, no vehicles were in the road and the weather was clear with light winds. Air traffic controllers reported seeing sparks come from the aircraft as it was going down the runway and immediately called fire-rescue crews at the airport. Authorities are still trying to determine the source of the sparks, but Hersman said that some "rubber and other airplane parts" were found on the runway.

A witness told local TV station WIS that after jumping from the plane, Barker, 32, and AM, 35, tried to help each other extinguish the flames, with AM ripping off his shirt and helping Barker take his burning clothing off.

Doctors announced at a press conference on Sunday that the drummer and DJ were in "critical but stable" condition and that they're expected to make full recoveries.

Several of the musicians' friends and family members have released statements reacting to the crash, including Barker's ex-wife Shanna Moakler, Fall Out Boy and Lindsay Lohan.

A longtime friend of the co-pilot who died in the crash, 52-year-old James Bland, told the Associated Press that the experienced Bland flew anti-smuggling missions for 20 years for the U.S. Customs Service, as well as missions for the Santa Ana Police Department in California and U.S. Border Patrol. "He was such an experienced pilot, it had to be something beyond their control," Tim Ferrill said. "He was an absolutely meticulous pilot, very thorough and not a risk-taker at all."

E! Online reported on Saturday that the 2-year-old, 11-seat jet had flown without incident less than an hour before the crash, traveling from Teterboro, New Jersey, to Columbia and arriving at 11:08 p.m. "Something must have gone wrong on the ground," an unidentified FAA source told the site. "It appears the plane had no mechanical issues." The jet had recently made flights to California, Arizona, New Jersey and Kansas.

Travis Barker and DJ AM suffered second- and third-degree burns in Friday night's jet crash, but both are expected to make a full recovery, doctors at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, announced in a press conference Sunday morning (September 21).

Barker has burns on his torso and lower body, and AM has burns on a portion of his head and arm, but neither sustained any other injuries from the crash. Both are currently in "critical but stable" condition.

"I think these patients are going to make a full recovery," Dr. Fred Mullins, the Still Center's medical director told reporters. "Anybody who can survive a plane crash is very lucky."

Mullins would not comment on the types of treatment Barker and AM (born Adam Goldstein) were undergoing at the center, nor would he answer a reporter's question about what percentage of their bodies were burned. The two were originally transported to a hospital in Columbia, South Carolina, following the private jet crash that killed four people — including Barker's assistant, Chris "Little Chris" Baker, and security guard, Charles Still — but were then transferred to the Still Center for treatment of what a spokesperson for the facility called "extensive burns."

During the press conference, Mullins also read a statement from Barker's and AM's families.

"The families wish to thank fans all over the world for their prayers and concern. Deepest sympathy is expressed to the loved ones who perished in the crash," the statement read. "As the two recuperate and mourn this loss, privacy for them, their families and friends is requested at this time."

Several of the musicians' friends and family members have released statements reacting to the crash, including Barker's ex-wife Shanna Moakler, Fall Out Boy and Lindsay Lohan.

A spokesperson for the Still Center added in a statement that friends of Barker and AM may show their support by going to the hospital's Web site, Doctors-Hospital.net. Click on "Visitors," then "Email a Patient."

Artist and DJ: Gucci Mane and Drama

Mixtape: Gangsta Grillz: The Movie

Representing: Zone 6 (at least that's what Gucci is claiming)

411: You know how it goes: "Burr! Burr! Burr! Well, daaayumm!" A little more than a week ago, Gucci Mane proudly showed us why his label is called So Icey. He pointed to that ridiculously big "So Icey" piece around his neck. "It looks like a steering wheel," Bobby Valentino, who was at the Gooch's Atlanta headquarters, said in his syrupy Southern drawl. And what's the "burr," you might ask? The chilling sensation of seeing all those diamonds — neck, wrists and fingers.

"This is my first Gangsta Grillz with Drama," Gucci noted. "This is harder than some of my albums that I put out. It's some crazy production on there."

"I had to make sure it stays street-certified," Drama said. "What better way to do it than with Gucci Mane?"

"Man, I'm telling you it's a wrap," Gucci added, wearing sunglasses so big that Elton John would call the gaudy. "Not like the raps I be doing, a wrap like a burrito. Finito. You feel me? It's Gucci Tarantino, hollering at my amigos.

"All y'all 'Pulp Fiction' guys out there telling these non-believable stories, I'm watching you, dog," he added.

While Gucci has taken on the last name of one of Hollywood's most deranged filmmakers for the release of The Movie, the man behind the Gangsta Grillz series jacked one of Tinseltown's most successful leading men.

"I'm back with a vengeance and back with a new name," Mr. Thanksgiving declared. "From here on out, y'all can call me Dram Cruise. Blockbusters only. Mixtapes all day, everyday."

Days after Gucci and Dram shot their Mixtape Monday segment, reality yelled, "Cut." Mane was sentenced to a year in jail [LINK sentenced to a year in jail TO http://newsroom.mtv.com/2008/09/12/gucci-mane-going-back-to-jail/] because he not fulfilled the community service that was mandated as part of his probation. Sentenced to more 600 hours in 2005, Gucci had only logged 25 hours, according to the courts.

Joints To Check For

» "Photo Shoot." "We're looking like a photo shoot right now," Gucci explained. "I look at my watch, my bracelet, my rings, my handsome face and my brand-new haircut. I think it's time for a photo shoot."

» TK. "The soundtrack to East Atlanta," the Mayor of Bouldercrest Avenue said. "It's your boy, Gucci Mane Lafleur. Burr! It's getting kinda cold in here. We just dropped a movie, the mixtape. I'm the king of mixtapes and I'm the king of the streets. They say I'm the down-South 50. I've been called the down-South Biggie, the down-South 'Pac. What I liked to be called is Gucci Tarantino. ... Rated double, triple X. It's not the Big Dipper, it's the big tipper, baby."

The Streets Is Talking: News & Notes From The Underground

Slip-N-Slide Records founder Ted Lucas recently had a vision. He wanted to spread his wings. He and his staff have started a rock division and are trying to break pop artist Qwote and R&B singer Shonie.

Still, Lucas hasn't forgotten what got him to the top: street hip-hop. The next two huge releases from the label are Rick Ross' Deeper Than Rap and Plies' The Realest.

"December 16, Plies ain't gonna let you down," the exec promised. The album's first single is "Pants Hang Low," produced by Mannie Fresh.

"The music business changes so quick," Lucas added, explaining why Plies is dropping again, even with his gold album Definition of Real still in cycle. "Plies is a hard worker. There's no need to hold him back. I heard the album, heard the music, and I feel he's ready. You gotta feed the fans. When you got a fanbase and you're growing and they like your music, give them what they want. Before, you had albums come out by, like, Michael Jackson — people be on that album for two years. Now, the way the business is, we have to make sure the fans are happy and continue to grow."

The Realest will continue Plies' string of mainstream hits and street anthems.

"He's definitely understanding the business," Lucas noted. "He understands what it means to be mainstream, and he's still keeping core to his fans. He ain't watered down his music. The fans are still getting what they heard on the first mixtape. I feel he's one of the best at feeding the streets, but he understands the business. He can make a mainstream song that fits on radio and TV, but it's still on the edge."

Rick Ross is on a tear as of late. In the past couple of weeks, he's leaked freestyles to the Net where he's rapped over instrumentals, and made unofficial remixes to songs like Robin Thicke's "Magic" and the Game's "Dope Boys." Look for a Ross/ Papa Smirf mixtape soon, but first he's releasing H, an album made in conjunction with an independent film he and Birdman are top-lining. (The "H" stands for hustle and honor.) Ross' third Def Jam LP, Deeper Than Rap, is set to hit shelves early next year.

"When he says 'deeper than rap,' he's not joking," the CEO continued. "I already knew he was ahead of his class five years ago. Now he's ready to spread it and show people what he can do — giving people good music. People ain't seen nothing yet. Ross is always in the studio putting in good work, and the music is incredible. They gonna be riding with Deeper Than Rap."

As you may know, longtime Slip-N-Slide flagship Trick Daddy recently left the label.

"It ain't like we parted ways and we don't speak," Lucas said of T-Double-D. "We're still close." ...

On September 30, T.I. drops Paper Trail, one of the year's most anticipated LPs (that's such a cliché saying, but in Tip's case it's true). He seems like a lock to debut at the #1 position once the SoundScan numbers are tabulated. So who would have the grapefruits to launch their album on the same day as his? One of his own Grand Hustle artists, Big Kuntry King.

"I gotta take advantage of all that traffic," Kuntry laughed, when we caught up with him at a show in Atlanta. His My Turn to Eat LP comes out September 30 as well, and in the interim, he's putting out mixtapes. TK is out right now.

Rise Against Claim There's Nothing Radical About Appeal To Reason

Posted: 22 Sep 2008 05:00 AM PDT

'I don't see anything real radical about what it is we do,' frontman Tim McIlrath says.

The one adjective you almost always see ascribed to Chicago punk-rock outfit Rise Against is "political," and there's a reason for that. The band is known for its leftist politics, and its albums are rife with sociopolitical commentary. Beyond that, the guys are all strict vegetarians and active supporters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

But frontman Tim McIlrath claims the band's forthcoming fifth album, Appeal to Reason, which is scheduled for an October 7 release, isn't a political LP. In fact, he doesn't consider any of the band's material political in nature.

"When I talk to people about this band and what we do, or I read people's interpretations of who we are as a band, a lot of times I see things like, 'They're a radical band' or 'They're political,' 'They're controversial,' " McIlrath explained. "When I look and see what our band is saying, what we are asking of each other, what we are asking of the community we're in and the people who listen to us, I see nothing but real common-sense things. I don't see anything real radical about what it is we do. Only in a world this screwed up could concepts like being fair to people, being fair to each other, and growing up in a world that gives everybody a chance, only in today's world could that concept be radical or be considered radical.

"This is music that appeals to reason — the reasonable parts of the human psyche," he continued. "In my mind, it's just straight-up common sense. We're just in touch with reason, and that's all our songs are — an appeal to reason. If you really look at them and strip back all the superficial parts of the songs and even the superficial parts of punk rock, you'll find that there are some very reasonable things that are being asked of the world in our songs."

A few weeks back, Rise Against — who will be touring in support of Appeal to Reason starting October 2 in Cleveland, with Thrice, Alkaline Trio and the Gaslight Anthem — were back in their old stomping grounds of Chicago to shoot a video for the record's first single, "Re-Education (Through Labor)," with director Kevin Kerslake (Faith No More, Green Day). The clip, McIlrath admitted, does have a slightly political theme — one he feels practically anyone will relate to.

"It's an important song on our record," he said, adding that he's proud of "every single second" of Appeal to Reason. "It's talking a lot about the 9-to-5, dog-eat-dog lifestyle, and what we are asked to do to simply make ends meet nowadays, and I think it's a feeling shared by people all around the world and especially in this country.

"One of the great things about doing a video is that your imagination is the only thing that's limiting you, so you can do anything," he continued. "So we have a video that's going to encompass the anger and the angst that the youth of America feel toward society at large and the things that are demanded of them."
