50 Cent Says Rick Ross Rivalry Is Battle, Not Beef

For 50 Cent, battling and beefing in hip-hop are two distinctly different things. Despite his 2009 rivalry with Rick Ross, 50 said he doesn't feel the two have a beef.

After Rozay suffered two separate seizures in October, Fif responded via Twitter when a fan asked him, "Any words for Rick Ross?" "Yeah he gotta take care of his self," the G-Unit rapper commented, later writing, "I don't wish DEATH on him my grand father had a seizure."

At an October book signing for his new anti-bullying book, "Playground," in New York, 50 told MTV News, "You shouldn't wish that on anyone."

50 said he believes Ross started the feud to raise his own rap profile: "He says it started because I looked at him the wrong way," Fif recalled of an incident on the red carpet for the 2009 BET Awards. "That just means he wanted to compete, he wanted to move up, he wanted to create an awareness for himself, and he did it."

While the two did trade insults, specifically on Rozay's "Mafia Music" and Fif's "Officer Ricky," the G-Unit general said he didn't take the barbs personally, and in his mind, the two had a battle — not a beef. "This is why they changed the terminology from 'battling' to 'beefing.' It was always that battling was a part of the culture; they didn't do that until Tupac and Biggie Smalls' situation," he said. "That's when it became taboo to actually mention an artist's name."

On November 1, Ross appeared on BET's "106 & Park" and addressed 50's tweets: "If it was genuine, I appreciate it, and if that's the case, I thank you homey."

Did 50 Cent and Rick Ross have a battle or a beef? Is there a difference? Sound off below!

Adele Undergoes Vocal Cord Surgery

Singer went under the knife in Boston for vocal cord microsurgery

In an effort to repair her strained voice, Adele underwent microsurgery for a benign polyp on her vocal cords in Boston and doctor's said her prognosis is good.

"Adele underwent vocal cord microsurgery by Dr. Steven Zeitels to stop recurrent vocal cord hemorrhage (bleeding) from a benign polyp," read a statement from Massachusetts General Hospital where the surgery took place. "This condition is typically the result of unstable blood vessels in the vocal cord that can rupture. Based on the advice of her doctor and voice therapist in the United Kingdom, Adele came to Boston to consult and undergo corrective voice surgery with Dr. Zeitels, the Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Voice Center. ... Dr. Zeitels expects Adele to make a full recovery from her laser microsurgery."

According to The Los Angeles Times, the surgery uses special lasers to stop the vocal cord bleeding and has successfully been performed on other singers in the past, including Aerosmith's Steven Tyler in 2006. The surgery came after the "Rolling in the Deep" singer scrapped all remaining performances and appearances in 2011 on doctor's orders.

"It is with deep regret that Adele has been forced to cancel her remaining live dates and promotional appearances in 2011," read a statement posted on her website last month. "She is to undergo surgery to alleviate the current issues with her throat, and a full recovery is expected. As a result, doctors have ordered her to rest her voice and completely recuperate before looking to schedule any work commitments." The vocal problems were the latest hiccup in the 23-year-old singer's plans to tour the U.S., which were previously derailed when she had to call off a string of gigs due to a bout of laryngitis. "Singing is literally my life ... I have great confidence in believing you know how much this upsets me, how seriously I take it. Wanting to do something so bad and not being able to is the most frustrating thing as I'm sure you know," she wrote in a message to her fans explaining the latest setback, which was caused by a vocal hemorrhage. "My voice is weak and I need to build it back up. I'm gonna be starting up vocal rehab [soon] and start building my overall stamina in my voice, body and mind."

When MTV News contacted an independent expert prior to the surgery, he said that recovery from such a procedure could take one to two months and that Adele's voice should be fine in the long run.

War hero J.R. Martinez is the first to a perfect 30 score -- twice!
By Kelley L. Carter

On Monday night's "Dancing With the Stars," the remaining celebrities were challenged to dance two routines. To make it even tougher, the stars had to perform an instant dance to a song they'd heard only moments ago.

At the top of the pack was war hero and actor J.R. Martinez, who nabbed the first pair of perfect scores of the season with both his routines.

Here's how the others fared:

Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke
Reality star Rob Kardashian wanted to make good on his #2 position from last week with his routines on Monday night. His first dance was the quickstep to A-ha's "Take on Me," and the judges found him to be on point. Last week, they criticized him for his backside (saying it got in the way) but thought this first dance was an incredible improvement. "When you started, I thought, 'This isn't going to work.' That opening section was terrible. But once you got in hold, the whole thing changed. Your posture was good. I had a good look at your buttocks. Your buttocks were tucked in. Your best dance so far," head judge Len Goodman said. 27/30 For their instant dance, the twosome danced the jive, and the judges said he needed to sharpen up his feet a bit. "It was no glaring mistakes. To get through this is tough," Goodman said. 24/30
Total: 51/60

Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
The athlete danced the quickstep for her first routine, and after weeks of harsh judging, the pair finally hit their stride. The judges found them to be in sync with one another and said they had a blend of speed and control. "What's going on tonight? It's the night of miracles. Rebooted. Re-energized. You never moved so well. What's going on? Your best dance yet!" Bruno Tonioli gushed. 27/30 For their instant dance, they had the jive, and this was to be their redemption dance (they'd danced the jive earlier in the season, and Solo got off her count and messed up the dance weeks earlier). The judges thought they'd made a definite improvement since the last time they did the jive, and Goodman, who had been a big critic of the couple before, said it was everything a jive should be. "The fast and the furious! You were like a wild child!" Tonioli said. 25/30
Total: 52/60

Ricki Lake and Derek Hough
The talk-show host and her partner danced the waltz, and just like weeks before, the judges thought the dance was beautifully executed the entire way through. "You had a little stumble at the end there, but your movements are exquisite. What I love and what makes you so special is that when you dance, you lose yourself completely in the dance," judge Carrie Ann Inaba said. 28/30 Lake was confident going into the instant dance, because when she last performed the jive, she'd earned one of the highest scores that night. Her goal, she said, was to stay calm and not panic. "There were a few little stops and starts. You were on it, your energy was great, but there were a few moments where I thought you got lost. You got right back into it though," Inaba said. 24/30
Total: 52/60

Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus
The HLN anchor took on the tango for her first dance of the night, and the judges said she broke through her plateau. They thought the pair had command of the stage, and their dance was frisky and clean. "You've been on a plateau. But now, after all these weeks, up you've gone," Goodman said. 24/30 The talk-show host took on the jive for her instant dance, and the judges thought she got lost in the choreography. "I enjoy the way you trusted Tristan. The chemistry that you two have saved you," Inaba said. 20/30
Total: 44/60

J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff
After dropping down the leaderboard last week, the war hero wanted to move back up. For their first dance, they took on the waltz, and Martinez said he wanted to push himself to get the first 30 of season 13. The judges thought his performance illustrated incredible grace and found the routine to be magical. "It was like a musical Valentine card. You danced with your heart on your sleeve. Totally involved. Totally dedicated. You made beautiful music with Karina," Tonioli said. 30/30 The night's top scorer, Martinez, danced the instant jive, and the judges said he was in a class all his own. Inaba said no one came close to the couple that night. "You were off like a rocket! Your timing was impeccable! You've got it man, you've got it!" Tonioli yelled out. 30/30 Total: 60/60

Michael Jackson Supporters Celebrate At L.A. Court

Conrad Murray had his allies there too: 'They don't bring up drug dealers on trial when people die from overdosing,' one person tells MTV News.
By Matt Elias

LOS ANGELES — Even before the verdict was announced in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, the growing crowd outside the courtroom already began voicing their opinions about the potential outcome. Chants of "Guilty! Guilty! Guilty!" were met with signs supporting Michael Jackson's former physician.

Once the verdict was officially announced, that Conrad Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson, MJ's fans erupted, appearing to outnumber Murray's supporters by a large number.

In the moments following the announcement, supporters of Murray, fans of the King of Pop and general passersby weighed in on the verdict.

"I don't necessarily think it's fair that they found him guilty, because apparently Michael Jackson did have a drug habit, and I think if he wouldn't have given Michael the drugs, he would have got them from someone else," Lafonda Baker told MTV News. "I think that definitely his [medical] license should be taken away and he shouldn't be able to practice anymore, but I don't think he should be going to jail for that."

"I think that he was guilty of being a drug dealer, if anything," Jay Ellison added. "Michael was an addict, much like she said: If he didn't get it from [Murray], he would have gotten it from someone else, and we would have seen this trial with somebody else getting the [guilty] verdict. I just think it is what it is. This whole thing to me is crazy, because if it wasn't [Jackson], I know people who are hooked on prescription drugs [and] the doctors who write those prescriptions for them don't get brought up on trial for manslaughter if [their patients] die. They don't bring up drug dealers on trial when people die from overdosing. It's just crazy to me, but because it's Mike, you've got all the hype."

"Michael Jackson is loved by so many people, us especially," Baker said. "But we can still look at it and see that it's not really right."

"I believe he is guilty on some level," Renee Simmons said. "He gave [Jackson] a lethal dose [of propofol]. He should be responsible and should pay consequences for that. But I believe that there are so many others around him and that it's just a really sad story, because the list goes on of how many people are involved in that, and I think when you're paying somebody that much money, it might mess with your judgment a bit. I know there are nurses around him, employees, there are numerous people around him that are responsible, so I do hope that there is going to be justice for everyone."

Gregory Son, who attended the announcement of the verdict with a large sign in support of the prosecution and Jackson's family, was especially enthusiastic about the guilty verdict.

"Praise God, hallelujah! The truth will prevail, as it always does, and justice for Michael's family, justice for his fans, justice for the truth and justice for the justice system," he said. "God bless the great state of California and these lawyers; these lawyers did a great job."

Will Conrad Murray Go To Prison?

Michael Jackson cardiologist found guilty but legal experts doubt he will do hard time.
By Gil Kaufman

With the involuntary manslaughter trial of former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray finally wrapped, following the jury's guilty verdict on Monday afternoon (November 7), the next question is, how much time will Murray serve behind bars and where?

Before the jury's verdict came down on Monday, MTV News spoke to Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi, who explained what kind of sentence Murray is likely to face.

"The overcrowding laws in state prison right now could very well result in Conrad Murray getting a probationary sentence, meaning that any custody time would be spent in county jail rather than state prison," said Cavalluzzi, who does not have first-hand knowledge of the case, but has worked a range of criminal matters in L.A. courts from misdemeanor battery to homicide. "Right now, the ruling is that state prisons should be only for the most violent offenders, and I don't think that Conrad Murray would fall into that category."

Cavalluzzi said that involuntary manslaughter, of which Murray was convicted on one count, is a nonviolent offense that doesn't involve the cardiologist being accused of intentionally harming Jackson. "What they're saying is that he may have been a good man who made a horrible mistake and that the mistake that he made rises to criminal negligence," he said.

After the verdict was announced, Murray was denied bail and ordered to jail, where he will remain in custody until his November 29 sentencing hearing.

Although the charge Murray was facing carried a maximum four-year prison sentence, Cavalluzzi said that often times a defendant like Murray, with no criminal record and who has been convicted for the first time, has a very good chance of staying out of custody altogether. But given the high-profile nature of the case and the pressure from Jackson's family — Michael's mother Katherine, father Joe and siblings Jermaine and La Toya Jackson were among the family members who turned up at the courthouse after the verdict on Monday — to have Murray slapped with the maximum penalty, it's likely he will do some time in custody.

Following the announcement of the guilty verdict, Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley confirmed to reporters that due to those recent changes in California law, Murray was not likely to do any prison time. "It was a homicide, someone lost their life, three children lost time with their father because of someone's criminal negligence," said Cooley when asked if the prosecution was worth it given the almost-certain knowledge that Murray would not spend time in prison. "In that regard, it was worth it to prove that point."

Cooley lashed out at the new sentencing guidelines (called AB109) for nonviolent offenders and reiterated that he was against them from the beginning, labeling them a "fool's errand," and predicting that the Murray case would be the first of "many, many, many poster children cases that will reveal why 109 is a complete failure and criminal justice disaster."

Professor Robert Weisberg, co-director of the Stanford Criminal Justice Center and a law professor at Sanford agreed that because of sentencing laws, Murray will probably do his time in county lockup. "Involuntary manslaughter might sound violent, but it's not, so he won't go to prison," said Weisberg, who does not have a connection to the case either. As we've seen with other nonviolent offenders such as Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, the overcrowding situation in Los Angeles county jail is also an issue, and due to similar mandates, defendants often avoid serving anywhere near their full sentences in county as well.

"It is very common, especially for a probationary sentence, where someone is sentenced to custody time in county jail, that the county will then release them on something called house arrest," Cavalluzzi said. "It is very common in a case like this that someone could be given house arrest if they are sentenced to probation."

House arrest has several forms, though, which can range from 24-hour-lockdown home confinement, where a person is prohibited from leaving their home to exceptions in which they are allowed to come and go for doctor's appointments, counseling or professional business.

At the sentencing hearing later this month, Jackson's family is likely to make the case for the maximum sentence, while the defense may once again bring up former patients and colleagues who will attest to the doctor's good qualities. In the end, though, it is up to the judge to decide Murray's sentence. "[Both arguments] could sway the judge either way," Cavalluzzi said. "It's difficult to know how home confinement would look for Dr. Murray because one of the main exceptions to home confinement is a person's ability to continue to engage in their livelihood."

Given that Murray is now a convicted felon who has been found guilty of homicide in California, Cooley said the doctor will lose his license to practice medicine in the state. He added that he hoped other states would follow suit and revoke Murray's right to practice medicine as well.

Robert Pattinson And Taylor Lautner: What's Next?

We go through the 'Twilight' stars' rumored projects to see what's really happening.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

While we would be more than happy to continue to watch "Twilight" leading men Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner go on playing their star-making roles of Edward Cullen and Jacob Black forever, we only have two more movies to go before they retire their big-screen vampire and werewolf statuses for good. The good news is that in addition to the two-part "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn," both Pattinson and Lautner have plenty of film projects lined up to keep them up on the silver screen for the next few years.

When MTV News caught up with Pattinson and Lautner during "MTV First: Breaking Dawn," we played rumor patrol with their post-"Twilight" dockets.

First up, Lautner is rumored to be teaming up with Oscar winner Gus Van Sant to make a small-budget film based on a nonfiction article from The New Yorker. What is the status of that film? "Gus is an incredible director. I would love to have the opportunity to work with him," Lautner said. "Things are a little premature right now, but he's amazing."

We'll pencil in a "TBD" on that one. Next up, there are murmurs that Pattinson is up for the lead role in a Jeff Buckley biopic and that he's being considered for the big-screen adaptation of the Green Day musical "American Idiot."

"The Jeff Buckley thing, I just love Jeff Buckley's music," he offered as a possible explanation for how his name became attached. " 'American Idiot,' I don't know where that came from," Pattinson continued, at which point we let him know that lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong had mentioned Pattinson's name back in 2009.

"Really? That's pretty cool," Pattinson said.

So for those keeping score, Lautner might be doing a movie with Gus Van Sant, someday, and Pattinson has no idea about Jeff Buckley or "American Idiot."

Conrad Murray Verdict 'Very Fair,' Expert Says

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 06:04 AM PST

'There was so much overwhelming evidence of guilt that the defense didn't really have much of a chance,' Mike Cavalluzzi tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

The nearly six-week involuntary manslaughter trial against former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray ended Monday afternoon (November 7) with a guilty verdict. Judge Pastor announced that Murray would be taken immediately into custody and held without bail until his sentencing hearing, scheduled for November 29.

Moments after the verdict was read, MTV News spoke with Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi for his expert opinion regarding Murray's conviction on one felony count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson.

"I'm not at all surprised by the verdict," said Cavalluzzi, who is not associated with this case. "I think the prosecution did an excellent job of laying out their case, and I think that there was so much overwhelming evidence of guilt that the defense didn't really have much of a chance. This is a very fair verdict, mainly because it isn't a verdict that calls for any intent or any malice on the part of Dr. Murray. This is about criminal negligence, gross negligence on his part, and I think it's a fair verdict."

Cavalluzzi also wasn't surprised by the amount of time — nine hours — it took the jury to reach their decision. "This is about how long one would think it would take given the amount of evidence the jury had to go through," he said. "It seems to me that perhaps the jury was a little bit media savvy in coming down with their verdict the end of a Monday morning so it would be announced early Monday afternoon. It allows them to reach the full week of the news cycle and hit all the major magazines. So it seems to me like someone on that jury knew about Us [Weekly] magazine."

Looking ahead, Cavalluzzi said more jail time isn't necessarily in Murray's future after the November 29 sentencing.

"It's a little bit early to tell what a fair sentence would be for Dr. Murray now. That's the most difficult part of the process for Judge Pastor, in which he will have to seriously consider all of the mitigating factors which would lean toward Dr. Murray not doing any jail time and all of the aggravating factors that would lead toward him going to state prison," he said. "It seems to me, at first blush, that any jail time wouldn't be appropriate in this case given the fact that Dr. Murray has no criminal record and there truly was no malice, no intent to actually harm Michael Jackson at all. What he was really doing was succumbing to the wishes of a patient, and unfortunately, that patient was not a person whose wishes should have been succumbed to."

Just like Michael Jackson's legions of die-hard fans, stars are also sounding off about the guilty verdict for former Jackson doctor Conrad Murray.

Shortly after the announcement Monday afternoon (November 7), the blogosphere was flooded with celebrity opinions, from Nicki Minaj, Ryan Seacrest, sister LaToya Jackson and more.

"People are cheering but there really are no winners here," Minaj tweeted. "This has been an utter tragedy from beginning to end. #RIPMichaelJackson."

Seacrest questioned how much time Murray will actually serve behind bars, writing, "Big question is will conrad murray serve time? Judge has 20 days to sentence him, and can give him up to 4 years in prison."

MJ producer and collaborator Darkchild was content with the news, tweeting,"#GUILTY Justice has been served but we still lost a great man, great father, greatest entertainer, and a great friend of mine! R.I.P MJ."

"VICTORY!!!!!! Michael I love you and I will continue to fight until ALL are brought to justice! Thank you EVERYONE for your love and support! It will ALWAYS be appreciated!" sister Latoya Jackson wrote on her Twitter, with the entire family also releasing a joint statement.

Piers Morgan described Murray's behavior as "unethical for a doctor." "#ConradMurray didn't deliberately kill #MichaelJackson, but his negligent actions allowed the death to occur," he wrote on Twitter.

Tyrese sent his wishes to the Jackson family, hoping they found closure in the ruling. "MICHAEL JACKSON YOU WILL FOREVER BE MISSED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN... REST IN HEAVEN!! REST IN HEAVEN!! I hope the family has closure!! RIH!" he tweeted.

While some celebs, like ?uestlove of the Roots, had mixed feelings about the verdict ("Guilty. now what?" he wrote), Bravo star Patti Stanger rejoiced in the news: "The karma kat got Conrad Murray...guilty! Greed is never worth a person's life. X0," she tweeted.

Kristen Stewart Squirms Reliving First MTV Interview

'I just can't handle that,' 'Twilight' actress says, jumping out of her chair during 'MTV First: Breaking Dawn.'

Our "MTV First: Breaking Dawn" was full of so many fun moments between "Twilight Saga" stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner that we would be remiss if we didn't go back to highlight a few of the best.

One of the most surprising and entertaining moments occurred when we informed Stewart that we brought a clip of her first-ever interview with MTV. Her reaction was immediate: "No, no, no, no, no, no, no. I actually can't do this!" she said when we told her we were ready to roll the clip. "Ah! I don't think you understand what that does to me. Uh. It's happening," she said, half-covering her face as the clip rolled.

In the clip, from MTV's first interview with Stewart and Pattinson on the set of the first "Twilight" movie, we ask Stewart what impressed her about working with Pattinson thus far.

"I think he's really handsome," she jokes, sending Pattinson into a fit of laughter. "No, no. He can't lie," she admits, taking the question seriously. "He's incapable of lying, so it's pretty clear when we need to work on the scene."

Pattinson cuts in, joking that Stewart doesn't think he can act: "What she means [by 'lying'] is 'acting.' "

Stewart counters: "Nope. That's so not what I mean. He's just copping out," she adds, and then the clip fades to black, and we see Stewart up out of her interview chair, half-pacing in front of Pattinson and Lautner.

"I just can't handle that," Stewart attempted to explain of her discomfort watching herself onscreen. "As far as I'm concerned, this doesn't exist," she said, indicating that she was trying to block out the fact that we were taping an interview at that very moment.

When asked what it was about the interview that had her so unsettled, Stewart said that it was just a "very different" time.

"We've had a lot of development," she said about her growing interactions with MTV News. "Our relationships have really progressed, I feel."

'Even though nothing can bring back our son, justice has finally been served!' family says in a statement to TMZ.

Seventeen members of Michael Jackson's family — including his parents, brothers Jermaine and Randy and sister LaToya — were on hand Monday (November 7) in the Los Angeles courtroom when a guilty verdict was read in the involuntary manslaughter case against Jackson's former physician, Dr. Conrad Murray.

While the audible gasp heard when the verdict was read was reportedly that of Kathy Hilton — a close Jackson family friend and mom to Paris and Nicky Hilton — the family remained stoic during the proceedings and did not hold a formal press conference afterward.

Upon exiting the courthouse, Jackson's mother, Katherine, told local news cameras, "Justice was served. I want to thank the jury for doing the right thing," while brother Randy said he was "ecstatic," and Jermaine said the verdict felt "wonderful." Latoya, wearing a black and gold jacket reminiscent of something her late brother would wear, waved her arms at the crowd in celebration and also tweeted: "VICTORY."

TMZ reported that the family later released a statement, reading, "We have been waiting for this moment for a very long time and we couldn't hold back tears of joy in the courtroom. Even though nothing can bring back our son, justice has finally been served! We can't wait to go home and share this day with Michael's children."

Dr. Murray was found guilty on one count of involuntary manslaughter and faces up to four years in jail and the loss of his medical license. He is due to be sentenced November 29.

A$AP Rocky Having A 'Good Time' On Debut Mixtape

Real Spit: A$AP Rocky is having the time of his life, and he wants you to join him. "I just want people to have fun again; people don't know how to have fun," the Harlem, New York, rapper recently told Mixtape Daily.

"It's all about mean-mugging and ballin' and bottle poppin,' and sh--. I feel like we can just have brew, cigarettes and some bad bitches and have a good time," he theorized about the current hip-hop landscape. "We don't really need all that other fancy sh-- because that doesn't happen every day in real life."

And with that notion, Rocky's first mixtape, Live.Love.A$AP, was birthed. Noted for his Southern approach to hip-hop, the NYC-bred Rocky sets the record straight on the tape's opener, "Palace." On the operatic slow-roller, Rocky pays homage to rap from other regions while looking to carve his own identity. "Don't remember me as a wannabe, New Orleans n---a/ Slash lean sipper, Tennessee n---a/ Nah, influenced by Houston, hear it in my music/ A trill n---a to the truest, show you how to do this."

His breakout single, "Peso," appears on his debut tape, but Rock's fan-favorite "Purple Swag" has been replaced with a remix that features producer/rapper Spaceghost Purrp and A$AP Nast adding verses. The Clams Casino-produced "Wassup," melodic and menacing at once, is a sleepy track with a rolling bass, and it finds the newly crowned N.Y. prince putting it down for his hometown. "I be that pretty mother----er, Harlem's what I'm reppin'," he spits, recycling the quotable line from "Peso."

The A$AP circle is tight-knit, so features from outsiders are kept to a minimum, though Schoolboy Q's contribution on "Brand New Guy" is clearly welcome. The Black Hippy MC steals the show, spitting murder and watching Netflix on the couch with his rival's girlfriend. It's quite the comedy.

A$AP Rocky's out-of-town influence is present throughout: "Trilla" is a bluesy, Deep South affair with a hint of Midwestern Bone Thugs-style vocals, while "Get Lit" is a perfectly chopped and screwed Texas throwback. It may not be New York, but it most certainly is fun.

Joints to Check For

» "Palace" - "That's the first track off of Live.Love.A$AP; it's produced by Clams Casino. I think it's one of the hardest tracks on the whole project.

» "Bass" - "It's just one of those hard-hitting bangers. I mean, when that track comes on, it's like mayhem; it's just like 'Wow.' "

Conrad Murray Verdict Divides Michael Jackson Fans

'I feel like though justice was made, it really wasn't,' one MTV.com reader writes.

Buzz surrounding the involuntary manslaughter trial against Michael Jackson's former personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, reached a new high Monday afternoon (November 7) when the jury announced the verdict for the long-awaited case: guilty.

Fans took to the comments section of MTV News, as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages, to share their opinions on the verdict, which was reached after almost nine hours of deliberation.

One MTV.com user appeared somewhat pleased with the news, writing, "I feel like though justice was made, it really wasn't. He gets 4 years prison, but then because of overcrowding gets sentenced reduced and serves at a jail. On top of that his sentence might be reduced further. Just because you have money and you are a doctor does not mean you have the right to be negligent. Michael was someone's son, brother, uncle, father. It's unfair. RIP MJ."

According to Twitter user xAshley_Arianax, the jury came to the right conclusion. "Well, Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson. Justice was served. RIP Michael Jackson," she wrote.

As many celebrated the verdict, others, including Christina Wixson, were on the fence about the ruling. "Man, I don't know on this. However, I do feel that physicians take an oath...if this guy would have been found not guilty-it would make that oath and the job of physician null and void," she wrote on MTV News' Facebook.

Jason Hubbard shared his theory about Conrad Murray: "The Dr. has responsibility and now has to pay his debt. A Doctor's job is to help the sick not enable a drug addict because they can pay a lot of money."

Some fans of the late pop icon weren't pleased that the doctor was only found guilty of involuntary manslaughter instead of a more severe charge. "Dr. Murray's possible 4 year sentence does not feel like 'justice' for the death of a hero.... RIP Michael Jackson," Twitter user WildeScarlette wrote.

Another commenter, Katrina Maxwell, thought Murray was "guilty of breaching medical conduct due to who his client was" but "was paid all that money to do as his client instructed him."

"He's not a murderer," she added.

MTV News will be covering the Conrad Murray case live. Go to MTVNews.com for breaking news, reactions and analysis from Los Angeles or tune to MTV for the latest updates.

Conrad Murray Denied Bail After Guilty Verdict

Michael Jackson's former doctor will be sentenced November 29.
By Gil Kaufman

Just minutes after Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson, the judge in the case denied the cardiologist bail and ordered him held in jail until his sentencing later this month.

Murray, 58, sat impassively at a table with his lawyers as the court reporter read the unanimous guilty verdict just after 1 p.m. PT. Dressed in a gray suit and blue tie, the doctor showed no expression as Judge Michael Pastor surveyed the seven-man, five-woman jury about their decision. With the exception of a single loud whoop when the guilty verdict came down, the courtroom was silent during the proceedings.

After conferring with lawyers on both sides, Judge Pastor agreed to a November 29 sentencing date and then announced that Murray would be taken immediately into custody and held without bail until that date. The physician looked surprised when a bailiff immediately came up behind him and began putting handcuffs on the doctor's wrists. Pastor said he came to his decision after weighing factors including the protection of the public, the seriousness of the homicide charge and his fear that Murray may not show up for sentencing against the fact that the Texas physician has no prior criminal record and has appeared to all previous court dates.

"Dr. Murray's reckless conduct in this case poses a demonstrable risk to the public," Pastor said. "Public safety demands that he be remanded into custody."

Reacting to the verdict, Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News he was not surprised by the verdict at all. "I think the prosecution did an excellent job of laying out their case, and I think that there was so much overwhelming evidence of guilt that the defense didn't really have much of a chance," said Cavalluzzi, who has worked a range of criminal matters in L.A. courts from misdemeanor battery to homicide but was not directly involved in this case. "This is a very fair verdict, mainly because it isn't a verdict that calls for any intent or any malice on the part of Dr. Murray. This is about criminal negligence, gross negligence on his part, and I think it's a fair verdict."

Jackson's parents, Joseph and Katherine, as well as siblings LaToya and Jermaine, were on hand to view the decision, and outside the Los Angeles courtroom, a vocal throng of sign-waving fans yelled and clapped as the news spread about the verdict.

Pastor thanked the jury for their diligence in performing their civic duty in a "remarkable fashion" and told them they are now free to discuss the case with whomever they wish. As the jury filed out, Murray stood and looked momentarily over his left shoulder at someone seated in the gallery who was not visible on the courtroom media feed.

The verdict came after 49 witnesses took the stand and the prosecution presented often-bruising testimony against Murray, a cardiologist with clinics in Texas and Las Vegas who was recruited in 2009 by Jackson to help the then-50-year-old star stay healthy in the run-up to his planned 50-date comeback tour, This Is It.

The prosecution brought a long list of medical experts and emergency-room doctors to the stand to testify that Murray had not followed proper procedure in dealing with Jackson when the singer was in distress on the morning of June 25, 2009. They also presented evidence that the care Murray provided for Jackson in the weeks and months leading up to that fateful morning were substandard or outside the bounds of legal and ethical requirements. The witnesses concluded that Murray lacked the proper monitoring equipment to administer the surgical anesthetic propofol to Jackson, an off-label use of the intravenously delivered drug that was reportedly employed to help chronic insomniac Jackson get to sleep.

Investigators found that Murray ordered nearly 4 gallons of propofol in his treatment regimen for Jackson and administered the drug inside the singer's rented home, a practice that all the prosecution experts said was unheard of. Jurors also heard testimony about how Murray left Jackson's bedroom for a period after providing him with propofol and spent his time making calls and sending texts to a former girlfriend. When he realized Jackson was in distress, Murray gave the pop star CPR on a bed, a decision that also deviated from the suggested method requiring a hard surface under the patient.

Murray was additionally faulted for waiting more than 20 minutes to call 911, not keeping proper records and failing to tell the paramedics and ER doctors that he had given Jackson propofol.

While prosecution witnesses claimed Murray acted with "gross negligence" in treating Jackson, the physician's own team of lawyers countered with a string of defense witnesses who called into question claims made by Jackson's bodyguard that he requested that staffers hide bottles of propofol before he dialed 911. Other character witnesses testified to the generous, attentive nature of Murray's medical practice, while expert defense witnesses cast doubt on the theories about Jackson's death provided by the prosecution's star witness, Dr. Steven Shafer.

Murray, who was slated to make $150,000 a month to care for Jackson, is now facing four years in prison. But new sentencing laws in California aimed at mandatorily reducing state prison overcrowding mean that, as a nonviolent offender with no prior record, he is likely to be sentenced to county jail instead. If that is the case, his sentence could be reduced further. Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley lamented to reporters afterwards that due to the recent changes in California law Murray was not likely to do any prison time.

He also still faces a civil lawsuit brought by MJ's father, Joseph Jackson, which seeks financial restitution.

Batman And Bane Take Over Manhattan

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 03:14 AM PST

We've got all your Caped Crusader news in The Weekly Rising, MTV News' new 'Dark Knight Rises' column.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Because we know you're as obsessed with all things Batman as we are, we're kicking off The Weekly Rising, a brand-new column that will cover everything "The Dark Knight Rises," from news roundups to rumors and analysis. Every Monday, we'll give you the lowdown on the week in Bats and prep you for the big release next July.

Spoilers are inevitable, and we'll be sure to do our best to give you the heads-up when you might need to start covering your ears and saying "Na na na na na na na na Batman!" This week, we'll fill you in on our NYC set visit from last week, give an update from filming back on Wall Street over the weekend and offer a tip on how to get your voice into "The Dark Knight Rises" (hint: It involves screaming at your computer, so make sure no one else is home).

NYC Becomes Gotham
It would have taken a lot of will power to work and live in New York City and not feel at least a small impulse to go check out what they've been filming around the city. The location shoots in Manhattan began a little over a week ago, and there has been a ton of great stuff happening. Production converted Trump Tower into the headquarters for Wayne Enterprises, making it the third form of Gotham's mystical shape-shifting skyscraper. Outside the building, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake helped a very Patrick Bateman-looking Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne through a crowd of reporters.

Spoilers ahead! We'll let you know when you can come back out.

Last weekend, things got more interesting. There was a Batwing hovering over Wall Street and, even more interesting, a large bomb-like object with a timer on it. Lots of theories got thrown around, including the popular "Bane's earthquake machine," which honestly seems too unrealistic. True believers in the earthquake-gadget theory were quick to reply, "What about the microwave emitter from 'Batman Begins,' smart guy? Huh? Is that more realistic? You think you're so smart." Our response: Anyone who has seen a workplace microwave after someone nuked a bowl of chili without covering it knows what kind of destruction microwaves can dole out.

End spoilers.

On the Scene
So after that, how could we not stake out the set? Maybe we'd catch another motorcycle chase or at least see Bale in full Batman regalia, so we headed down to the set of "Magnus Rex," the fake title of the production, at 32nd Street and Fifth Avenue to see what we could see.

Turns out, we picked the wrong day to go. Check out the embedded video from our set visit; there aren't any spoilers, because we had no idea what was going on. Not a total disappointment, but the real sadness didn't set in until Saturday, the day we didn't visit the set, and all hell broke loose.

Spoilers are back!

Batman and Bane literally fought a battle, full armies in tow, on Wall Street over the weekend — the cops with Bats and some pissed-off citizenry with Bane. Pictures and videos from the downtown war popped up everywhere, the best ones over at SuperheroHype.com, all of them mocking us. But enough about our deep, deep sadness — what the hell was going on? Most of the talk about the general arc of "Rises" points to the disintegration of Gotham's infrastructure with Bane leading point. The fight looked like a continuation from the L.A. shoot, where Batman and Bane duked it out in the snow, so we could be seeing the same sequence here. Is Bane's army just the citizens of Gotham or the long-rumored return of the League of Shadows? We say it was citizens — not shadowy enough.

End spoilers.

Make Your Voice Heard
Finally, last week, composer Hans Zimmer offered fans a unique opportunity to join in on some cult-like chanting. If you head over to UJAM, you can record your own version of the "Bah-Sah-Rah" chant from the trailer and the viral campaign that unveiled the first picture of Tom Hardy as Bane.

Speaking of which, where the hell is the viral campaign? "Why So Serious" was a major component of the lead-up to "The Dark Knight," and all we've seen so far is the Bane picture. We can't be the only ones who miss receiving clues from the Joker and waiting while more enthusiastic fans completed tasks, so we could reap the rewards of their hard work.

Now we want to hear from you: It was rumored last week that a new trailer for "The Dark Knight Rises" will premiere December 16 in front of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," the same day the six-minute prologue appears before IMAX screenings of "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol."

What do you want to see from the trailer and prologue? Let me know on Twitter via @KPSull, and we'll discuss next week. Also, be sure to check out our new weekly discussion show, "Talk Nerdy to Me."

Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight Rises."

It was the weekend's hottest party, and some of the biggest winners at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards took to Twitter to thank their fans for showing them some love at the show, which was hosted by Selena Gomez.

The whole thing went down in Ireland at Belfast's Odyssey Arena. Lady Gaga took home the most hardware with four prizes; other highlights included Gaga's television debut of her new single, "Marry the Night," and performances from LMFAO, Bruno Mars, David Guetta and Coldplay, to name a few.

Gomez wasn't up for any awards, but she had plenty of other responsibilities on her mind as the night's MC, an experience about which she seemed overjoyed. "Thank you MTV for having me host the EMA this year," she wrote. "Thank you to all that followed me throughout this weekend. Thank you to everyone who tuned into this year's MTV EMA I had such an amazing time!!! I love you all."

Speaking of the night's host, Justin Bieber showed his lady some love. "Great job tonight @selenagomez tonight at the EMA's. proud of u," he wrote before tweeting about his post-show partying. "3 BIG WINS!! and shoutout to my guy @BrunoMars for winning Best new Artist. well deserved. was a little stunned when i won. So who else did Bieber party with? "My party crew 2nite was #REAL - @selenagomez @alfredoflores @carinmb @scooterbraun @JENNIWOWW @haydenpanettier - #greatpeople #superrandom," he shared. "WE WENT IN!! haha. Great night. Thank you Belfast and Thank you MTV and the EMA's - GREAT TIME. and most of all THANK YOU TO THE FANS!! I LOVE YOU and I wouldn't be here without you. NEVER SAY NEVER. @LMFAO Everyday I'm SHUFFLIN!"

Katy Perry snagged the award for Best Live Act thanks to her theatrical California Dreams Tour, and she graciously thanked her fans. "Thank U to all the AMAZING Katycats who voted me best LIVE! Thank u for the commitment!" she wrote. "Tomorrow I play Dublin, over 120 shows for the CDT!"

Bruno Mars won for Best New (Artist) and gushed about attending the show, despite usually hating these types of things. "Im not the biggest fan of red carpets or Live TV but for the first time last night I really enjoyed myself. Thanks MTV that was fun as sh--," he wrote.

Lady Gaga waxed nostalgic on Twitter after she took the stage and won for Best Female, Biggest Fans (for her Little Monsters) as well as Best Video and Best Song ("Born This Way").

"Oh my Little Monsters how I love you!! The award I wanted the most we won before the show! MTV's "Biggest Fans"!" she tweeted. "We won 4 EMA'S. ... Watching Little Monsters win alongside Born This Way was life changing. Born This Way means more to me than anything I've ever created. Thank you for always sticking by me. I was drunk all night with happiness. Sometimes I can't believe Born This Way has been out only 5 months. OVER THE MOON."

Best Alternative and Best World Stage winners 30 Seconds to Mars' fans may have lost to Gaga's, but the band couldn't have been happier with winning two prizes. "You did a really great job w/ the EMAs Echelon," frontman Jared Leto tweeted. "You should be very proud. Goodnight all you Kings+Queens...."

Drake: I Made <i>Take Care</i> 'My Way'

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 12:11 AM PST

'I feel like I've earned the right to do it my way,' Drizzy told MTV News before November 15 LP leaked onto Net.
By Rob Markman

Rather than rant and complain about his album leaking on Sunday night, Drake accepts that it's just a normal part of the record biz. After a nearly complete version of Take Care ("The Ride" and the LP's bonus cuts seem to be missing) hit the Internet, Drizzy took to Twitter to address the early release.

"Listen, enjoy it, buy it if you like it...and take care until next time," he wrote.

Although TC is officially slated to hit retail on November 15, the album has spawned numerous trending topics on Twitter and has dominated hip-hop's social conversation over the last 24 hours. Rather than an overblown production befitting of rap's fastest rising star, on Take Care, the OVO general scales back and puts the focus on his native Toronto and his relationship with the city.

The sophomore LP, recorded mostly in Canada with Drizzy's right-hand producer Noah "40" Shebib, is a deliberate toast to his town.

"That's one of the biggest stories behind this album, it's either my way or we're not doing it — in everything," Drake told MTV News back in October. "Every photo shoot, every video, every step I'm taking I feel like I've earned the right to do it my way, so part of doing it my way I want you to see who I am really around."

And his TO crew may not be as clean-cut as Drake's radio-friendly music may have led fans to believe. Opening with the melancholy "Over My Dead Body," Drake sets things off with a shot to his detractors and tells how his success ultimately supports his people in the struggle. "Just performed at a bar mitzvah over in the States/ Used half of the money to beat my brother's case," he spits.

On "Crew Love," Drake gives Toronto upstart the Weeknd a push. Despite the song's calming melody, there is something rather menacing about it once the Young Money star begins to rattle off his bars. After going on about taking his goons on vacation, Drake threatens violence with the coyness of a mafia don when he rhymes, "I got a lot of friends to come up off the strip for me/ The same ones that will come up off the hip for me."

It's not unlike the sing-songy line in "Headlines" where Drizzy begs the haters "You gon' make someone around me catch a body like that."

By now, Drake's story is well-known: Child actor from Canada drops a couple of mixtapes, one of which makes its way to Lil Wayne, who then invites the young MC on tour and signs him to his Young Money label. But on "Look What You've Done," Drake takes his personal narrative and adds all of the necessary color. He starts off talking to his disapproving mother, "We argue about spendin' money on bullsh--/ And you tell me I'm just like my father, my one button you push it."

Maybe we've had Drake pegged wrong all along? Maybe it's all just entertainment? Regardless, on Take Care, Drake shows a different side than we've previously seen from him. "I show love and get love back, and I think that's very important for people to see," he told MTV News. "Just know that's our town, that's our place, so that was important for me to really display that consistently on this album."

"Underground Kings" and the Just Blaze-produced "Lord Knows," featuring Rick Ross, finds the rapper planting his rap flag, while the Rihanna-assisted title track is a pulsating dance track that aims to take Drizzy past the confines of hip-hop and R&B.

Still, with all the sonic variations on Take Care, there's one common thread. Throughout the LP, the Young Money virtuoso consistently puts on for the city that he's from. Welcome to Toronto.

Jury took nearly nine hours to return a verdict against Jackson's former doctor.

After nearly six weeks of testimony and several gasp-inducing courtroom moments, the jury in the involuntary manslaughter trial against former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray rendered a guilty verdict Monday (November 7) after almost nine hours of deliberation.

Breathe Carolina Call <i>Hell Is What You Make It</i> 'Eclectic'

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 01:15 AM PST

MTV Push Artist of the Week's July album is gaining steam on radio.
By Jocelyn Vena

Breathe Carolina
Photo: MTV News

The two guys of Colorado electronic-rock outfit Breathe Carolina have this message for their fans: Hell Is What You Make It.

Their album of that name, which dropped back in July, has started to pick up steam with music lovers, and the guys hope fans — both new and old — really immerse themselves in the LP.

"It's amazing, honestly. I think getting the opportunity, that's the best part. To be able to say, 'Here.' I hope people get to dive into the record a little bit and really see who we are," Kyle Even told MTV News when they stopped by the newsroom a few weeks back. "[The single] 'Blackout' is one song that we created. We're very eclectic, and we definitely do whatever we want. I think you'll find that out as you go through our catalog of songs and see who we are and where we came from."

The guys approached the album in a whole new way, helping shape the sound for the aggressive release. "This album was different with the writing process, because we wrote it with our whole band that we play live with," David Schmitt said. "That was awesome, having their minds in the writing process. The first two records, it was just me and Kyle. We found a producer in [Ian] Kirkpatrick, and it didn't seem like we were working. He made it huge for us."

The buzz should continue to grow for the pair: They are MTV's Push Artist of the Week, and starting next month, they'll hit the road, playing small clubs all over the country.

"It's cool just reaching a new audience now too with the radio stuff," Schmitt said. "I feel like it's brought Breathe Carolina to other ears that may not have heard it."

Listening to the album, it's clear the guys have one mission, which Even explained to us: "Making people move — that's our favorite part about writing that kind of music," Even said. "We get to get out there and move some people, like, literally sometimes we'll get in the crowd. We'll get rowdy."

Odd Future's Left Brain Facing Charges In Photographer's Assault

Amy Harris accused MC of slapping her at last month's Voodoo Experience festival in New Orleans.
By Gil Kaufman

A photographer who claimed Odd Future member Left Brain (born Vyron Turner) assaulted her at last month's Voodoo Experience festival in New Orleans filed charges against the MC on Friday.

Amy Harris accused Turner of slapping her across the face and knocking her camera lens to the ground in the October 30 incident. A representative for the New Orleans Police Department confirmed for MTV News that the single charge of simple battery had been filed and that a detective has been assigned to investigate.

Harris would not comment further, referring all questions to a Los Angeles law firm handling her case. In a statement released Sunday, she wrote, "It is my understanding that a police report I filed in New Orleans on Friday has now become public knowledge and is being reported on various websites. At this time, I do not wish to discuss the filing of the police report other than to say that, upon further reflection of events of the past week, it is something I needed to do. The week's events have been extremely upsetting."

Harris added that she decided to go to police after receiving anonymous email threats about the incident.

The charge carries a jail term of up to six months and up to $1,000 in fines. The incident, in which Harris claims the rapper swatted the photographer in the head and knocked the lens off her camera while leaving her with a red welt on her face, came during Odd Future's set at the annual festival.

Harris has released a photo she took in which Turner can be seen bending down and looking directly into the camera with his right hand coming forward in a swinging motion as he grits his teeth.

Turner has not commented on the charges filed, but in a since-removed post on his Tumblr — in which he posted Harris' photo — he wrote, "I didn't slap that old bi---. Everybody seen that sh--. Idgaf though. F--- her and f--- the media. I'm not stupid and I'm not lettin nobody sue me for my paper. It's my job to slap cameras out the way so like I said before, f--- your opinion your blog and ya peeps. Ha."

A spokesperson for the festival released a statement after the incident, which read, "The Voodoo Experience does not in any way condone the behavior of Odd Future towards the approved media assembled in the photo pit during the band's set. ... Festival organizers would like to apologize to their media guests who experienced and/or witnessed this abusive behavior."

But in a statement to Pitchfork, the band's spokesperson denied the incident. "There simply is no truth to the accusation floating around the internet. It's no secret that Odd Future has a love/hate relationship with photographers at shows simply because sometimes they are given access the group wishes their fans would have instead. After telling the photographers to clear out multiple times (as they've done before) Vyron (Leftbrain) took a swipe at a few cameras, NOT people.
