Paramore Say 'Majority' Of <i>Brand New Eyes</i> Is About Josh Farro

FRANKLIN, Tennessee — In his "Exit Statement" from Paramore, Josh Farro made one thing abundantly clear: There was a lot more going on behind the scenes than most fans were aware of.

Of course, in their interview with MTV News — which you can see more of in Paramore: The Last Word," a live stream on MTV.com on Friday at 4 p.m. ET — the remaining members of the band addressed most of his charges (not surprisingly, they don't agree with most of them), but in kicking up all that dust, Farro may have unwittingly also revealed the biggest secret of all: that the majority of the songs on Paramore's 2009 Brand New Eyes album were about him.

Up until he released his statement, most fans assumed that the lyrics on songs like "Playing God" ("It has to be so lonely/ To be the only one who's only") and "Ignorance" ("Where's your gavel, your jury/ What's my offense this time?") were Hayley Williams' way of telling off nameless naysayers and faceless detractors. But now, it's pretty apparent that they deal almost exclusively with her relationship with Farro — and if you're still not sold on that point, well, she'll tell you herself.

"I would say that a large majority of those songs, yes, have to do with the relationship we had and then that we had to mend," she said. "And it was really hard, because we were all friends, and then going through a breakup and going through any kind of tension as a band really affected all the lyrics. ... There are a lot of specifics that I pulled from my experience with just feeling like my face was underneath a boot all the time.

"I think the point of the album was never to point out those things, but hopefully to encourage people who feel that way," she continued. "Because I felt so alone in that fight, that I would never want, especially another young woman, to feel that way, because I know there are a lot of girls I've talked to, fans, go through the same thing in relationships and families, and it just sucks to feel kind of victimized."

And she didn't stop there, either, but you're going to have to wait for the "Last Word" live stream to hear the rest. And speaking of that live stream, we'd love to include your voice in the show, and judging by the sheer volume of comments our stories have gotten, you have plenty to say. You can upload videos to to or tweet your take @MTVNews, and we might just use it Friday.

MTV News will be unveiling our exclusive interview with Paramore on Friday at 4 p.m. ET with "Paramore: The Last Word," a live stream on MTV.com that will feature in-depth analysis of the band's future, real-time discussion with their biggest fans and exclusive footage of the band, past and present.

Will Lil Wayne Undergo A Rap Rebirth In 2011?

Young Money prez spent most of 2010 behind bars but a spasm-inducing single hints at an unstoppable year for the MC.

Lil Wayne's bound to have a better year in 2011 than he did in 2010.

The superstar MC spent the majority of the past year (eight months) behind bars on Rikers Island after turning himself in on charges stemming from a 2007 gun case. Of course, even with a prison sentence, his achievements were nothing short of amazing in '10: The rapper scored gold plaques for his rock-leaning effort, Rebirth, and his album I Am Not a Human Being; steered the two biggest new acts in hip-hop, Drake and Nicki Minaj; and ignited stages just before (Jay-Z's Madison Square Garden show with Young Jeezy) and after (Drake's final tour stop in Las Vegas) his incarceration.

So, what does Weezy do for an encore? He's already started by giving fans the first offering from his upcoming Tha Carter IV.

"What's really reassuring about '6 Foot 7 Foot' is how familiar it sounds," New York Times critic Jon Caramanica told MTV News. "I think that may be a liability, but it sounds like Wayne just before he went away."

The New Orleans rhyme slinger has been treading lightly on wax since his release from prison in November. He spit his first words on Birdman's "Fire Flames" track and then unleashed his otherworldly powers on "6 Foot 7 Foot." But his sparse output has only added to anticipation for what he has in store on Tha Carter IV.

"There's a lot of anticipation and I think he still sounds good and I think that he's gonna win," Rap Radar's Elliott Wilson explained.

He's logged plenty of studio time already; in fact, just before he was scheduled to leave Rikers, Wayne requested beats be prepared for him. The New Orleans MC isn't playing around.

Now, it's up to our #5 Man of the Year to take it up another level.

"The energy is there like he's excited," Wilson said. "Like, they literally let him out the cage. He's out to rip MCs' heads off."

'Jersey Shore' Star Vinny Reveals His Onscreen-Hookup Secret

In new season, which kicks off tonight, Vinny tells MTV News he had to 'drop that whole self-consciousness about being on camera.'

By his own admission, "Jersey Shore" star Vinny Guadagnino came into his own during the show's Miami-based episodes, trading his initial tentativeness in front of the camera on the Seaside Heights boardwalk for a fist-pumping swagger that netted him oodles of phone numbers and hookups in South Beach clubs.

That's not to say he's always comfortable with a camera catching his every move. As the reality star confessed when he stopped by the MTV Newsroom, there's no getting around the awkwardness of gettin' it in while the cameras are rolling.

"How do you do more than hook up with a girl when there's a camera in the ceiling watching you?" he laughed.

Somehow, though, he's found a way. The key, Vinny explained, is to "drop that whole self-consciousness that you have about being on camera." Helping matters is that he's been with the same "Jersey Shore" production crew from the beginning, and while he's not allowed to speak with the camera guys, they've created a sort of wordless bond with one another.

"You kind of become family with the camera crew without saying anything," he said. "If a camera guy is filming me and I'm macking on a girl, that's like my boy watching me."

While Vinny has gotten to a place where he can play carefree kissy-face with a club-going gal, it's the object of his affection who's not always cool, calm and collected with a 10-camera crew surrounding her. But ever the gentleman, Vinny does his best to put his lady friends at ease.

"The hardest part is the girl — she's not used to it," he said. "So me being a nice guy, I kind of feel for her at times. I just try to do whatever I can to make her feel comfortable in the moment."

The new season of "Jersey Shore" premieres tonight at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

Elton John, Natalie Portman, Taylor Swift bring star power to Queen Latifah-hosted event.

People choosing things is always a good reason to throw a huge party, right? At least that's what the folks behind the 2011 People's Choice Awards thought, so they tricked out this year's trophy handout with a super starry lineup of celebs and a few fun performances.

Host Queen Latifah kicked off the festivities with a huge musical number, barreling down the aisles of Los Angeles' Nokia Theater in a black suit, big jewels and casual kicks, flanked by scores of dancers thrusting their fists in the air to Taio Cruz's "Dynamite." The Queen even got the audience to join in the fun, as the sea of celebs waved their hands in the air as the hip-hop legend-turned-Hollywood player rhymed over the peppy track.

The performance set the tone for a night big on lighthearted appearances from entertainment A-listers. Jennifer Aniston handed out Favorite Comedic Star to funnyman Adam Sandler, who was also joined by David Spade and Rob Schneider to accept Favorite Comedy Movie for "Grown Ups."

"Black Swan" starlet Mila Kunis made her first awards-show appearance since her breakup with longtime beau Macaulay Culkin, chatting about having someone to always wake up to and keep her smiling before giving out the award for Favorite Talk Show Host to Conan O'Brien. "When you're up for an award and you're up against Oprah, you don't want to win. It makes Oprah very unhappy," the ginger-haired comic quipped about besting the TV titan before thanking fans for making 2010 "one of the best years of his life," despite his late-night drama with NBC.

One of the big star-power moments of the evening went down when pop legend Elton John strolled out to a standing ovation to present the award for Favorite Country Artist. Country princess Taylor Swift appeared genuinely awestruck when Sir Elton handed over the trophy, but remembered to congratulate the music luminary on becoming a new dad. "This award coming from you is such a showing of love," Swift told her fans of the accolade. The newly single singer also thanked her adoring public for being people she "can count on."

Selena Gomez & the Scene hit the stage to perform their track "A Year Without Rain." Gomez helmed the ballad in a flowing printed gown with a voluminous train and dangly hoop earrings as fog crept along the stage. The group wrapped up the performance with a special surprise when they were presented with the award for Favorite Breakout Artist.

Latifah showed off her sassy wit throughout the night, often copping to going off script, like when the audio from her mic got spotty and she jokingly blasted producers by proclaiming, "I'm the host! You can't cut me off!" Awards-show host extraordinaire Neil Patrick Harris — who later shouted out his new twins in baby-talk when he nabbed Favorite TV Comedy Actor — gave her an A+ for handling the technical glitch when she checked in with him about her hosting skills. "Glee" star Jane Lynch made a plea to keep music education in schools when she took home the trophy for Favorite TV Comedy Actress and a buzz-cut-sporting Zac Efron won Favorite Movie Star Under 25.

Screen veteran Johnny Depp also made a rare awards-show appearance when he showed up to receive the award for Favorite Movie Actor. The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star received a standing ovation when he took the stage, greeting presenter Taylor Swift (his daughter is a fan) and thanking the fans for the "stupefying honor."

Curvy reality sisters Kim, Kourtney and Khloé kept the dysfunctional family banter flowing when their hit "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" won Favorite TV Guilty Pleasure. The show also doled out snaps to popular Web distractions, and the Whittaker family took home Favorite Viral Video for the heartbreaking-yet-hilarious "Single Ladies" Devastation, which features the brood's youngest son dissolving into tears when his dad tells him he's not a "single lady" while his sisters rock out to the Beyoncé smash.

Although the show went down on Hump Day, Kid Rock hit the stage with his ode to weekend debauchery, "God Bless Saturday." The Detroit native outfitted the performance with all the trappings of cowboy-rocker superstardom, sporting a leather vest, tinted glasses and a cowboy hat and belting out the lyrics as hefty plumes of fire blasted from the stage.

Sporting a strapless, lavender tulle cocktail dress, Katy Perry plugged her summer 2011 tour when she loaded up on crystal trophies for Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Online Sensation.

However, the entertainment sensation the record 175 million People's Choice voters were feeling the most was easily the "Twilight" phenomenon, a fact Latifah played up when she peppered Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson with inane questions like whether a vampire could chomp his way out of getting devoured by a wolf and if Bella were turning to zombies after romantic romps with werewolves and vamps. "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" flick and cast scored four wins, with Stewart besting leading ladies like Angelina Jolie and Julia Roberts for Favorite Movie Actress. The film also nabbed awards like Favorite Movie, which was presented by a newly pregnant Natalie Portman and her "No Strings Attached" co-star Ashton Kutcher.

The theme was "Hollywood chic" on Wednesday night (January 5) at the People's Choice Awards, and all the stars stepped out in their best to celebrate the favorite movies, television shows and musicians of 2010.

Los Angeles was a bit chilly, but mini-dresses abounded on the sapphire carpet. Taylor Swift wore a short princess-style light-pink dress and donned a traditional updo.

Justin Bieber's new girlfriend, Selena Gomez, also went the light-pink route, but her short dress had a bit more pop with its giant frill on her right shoulder. "90210" star AnnaLynne McCord wore a very traditional blue sapphire dress that matched the carpet with a cowl front and an open back and appropriate gold heels.

But the women weren't the only ones turning heads on the blue carpet. Zac Efron showed off his new short haircut and wore a black tux with matching vest and blue tie. New father Neil Patrick Harris went tie-less but still rocked the traditional look, while "Nikita" star Shane West also went the classic route. His co-stars, Lyndsy Fonseca and Maggie Q, followed his lead, both donning little black dresses.

The Kardashian sisters showed up in style to represent their hit show "Keeping Up With the Kardashians." Kim Kardashian sported a gorgeous updo and strapless gold patterned dress with a matching necklace and beige shoes. Kourtney wore a similarly styled brown strapless short dress with white patterns covering it. Khloé Kardashian, whose new reality show starts filming this month, wore a flowing strapless gray number, while younger sisters Kylie and Kendall Jenner also wore traditional dresses.

"Hellcats" stars Aly Michalka and Ashley Tisdale bent the definition of Hollywood chic a bit with their outfits. Michalka showed up in a short black dress and a — weather appropriate — matching black jacket with silver floral beading, while Tisdale wore a long strapless patterned pink gown with a ribbed waist. Her fellow Disney star Miranda Cosgrove chose to go simple with a short, sleeveless black-and-white dress that was very traditional Hollywood.

Waka Flocka Flame Released From Jail

Atlanta rapper posts bond Wednesday after turning himself in for weapons and drug charges.

Waka Flocka Flame was released from custody Wednesday (January 5) after turning himself in for an array of weapons and drug charges earlier this week. Deputy Fielder of Georgia's Henry County Sherriff's Office confirmed to MTV News that the Atlanta rapper, born Juaquin Malphurs, was released at 3:33 p.m. after posting $31,950 bond.

Waka turned himself in to authorities Monday after his home was raided and his manager-mom Deb Antney and his So Icey mentor Gucci Mane were briefly detained. The "No Hands" rapper was booked on several charges, including possession of marijuana and hydrocodone, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and violation of probation for driving on a suspended license.

Antney has told MTV News that despite reports the raid was part of an investigation into a prostitution organization, Waka was not involved in that type of activity.

"It had nothing to do with prostitution," Antney said last month. "The weapons they found were licensed weapons. There was under an ounce of marijuana, but it was nothing but a blunt. The other drugs were medication that was in Waka's room from when he got hurt," Antney said, referencing the "O Let's Do It" spitter's shooting in January 2010.

Waka has staunchly denied that he's involved in any illegal activity, maintaining that he has no plans to dip into street dealings now that he's a hitmaking hip-hop star.

"Why would I rap and go try to street gang bang? That's hustling backwards," he insisted in December. "Why would I wanna rap all around the world and then go hit the streets and gang bang? I'm a rapper, I'm not a [gang-banger]. How can you gang bang and be a rapper? I don't understand that. I would love to find out where their information is coming from. I can't wait."

'Twilight' Trio Take Over People's Choice Awards

Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart fly in from 'Breaking Dawn' set for awards show.
By Terri Schwartz

It wasn't until an hour and a half into Wednesday night's (January 5) People's Choice Awards that the beloved "Twilight Saga" trio — Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner — finally made their appearance at the awards show, which meant fans unfortunately never got to find out whether Stewart would walk down the sapphire carpet with Pattinson, her rumored beau. But while the show began with a shutout for the "Twilight" stars, they ended up winning some of the biggest awards of the night, just as they did in 2010.

Johnny Depp won Favorite Male Movie Star for the fifth time in a row, beating both Lautner and Pattinson for the honor. Still sporting his "The Tourist" haircut, the favorite actor thanked his fans for the "stupefying honor" because it "comes from the people who keep us all here."

Zac Efron also bested both Stewart and Pattinson (and his ex-girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens) as Favorite Movie Star Under 25, another surprising shutout. "What an honor it is to be nominated among my contemporaries," Efron acknowledged, and thanked the connection he has with fans for keeping him around.

But where were the "Twilight Saga" fans, infamous for their skills that allow "Twilight" to continuously sweep fan-voted awards shows?

Turns out they were focusing their attention on getting Stewart the win for Favorite Movie Actress. The big three finally made their appearance more than three-quarters of the way into the show when Stewart accepted her big award. (By the way, it was Lautner — not Pattinson — who walked her to the stage.)

It was Stewart's first time at the People's Choice Awards, and in true KStew style, it was clear the "Twilight Saga" star was uncomfortable onstage. But she was sure to thank her fans, giving them a bit of a tease from the set of "Breaking Dawn."

"We're shooting 'Breaking Dawn' right now. It's going really well; it's really fun," she said during her acceptance speech. Spoiler alert! "I was a vampire this morning in Baton Rouge, so it's really weird."

Since it took the trio so long to show up to the awards show, host Queen Latifah wasn't going to let them off the hook so easily. They were seated front and center, and Latifah put them on the spot with a list of "questions" directed at their characters. Example: If a wolf ate a vampire, but the vampire wasn't dead, could the vampire eat the werewolf from the inside out? The awkward smile on Lautner's face was all the answer we needed. But the awkwardness was all worth it when Latifah mistook Pattinson's description of the "posh" airplane that they flew on from Baton Rouge for "plush." Oh, those silly Brits!

And "The Twilight Saga" ended the show with a bang, winning Favorite Movie, Favorite Drama Movie and Favorite Onscreen Team, presented by Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. Pattinson beat Lautner and Stewart to the microphone, and Lautner threw some faux punches at his onscreen enemy. "Taylor wanted to go first, but I wanted him to go last," Pattinson joked, then let Lautner proceed.

"I can't believe this! You guys are unreal," Lautner gushed. "It still amazes me. For movie number three, 'Eclipse,' already, you guys have gotten us here today, but you guys have also given us the opportunity to, as Kristen said, be filming 'Breaking Dawn.'

"I can't wait for you guys to see it," he continued. "Mark my words: The best is yet to come."

Stewart took the stage after him, adding to her previous acceptance speech, "I just want to thank our producer Wyck [Godfrey]. Dude, thank you so much, and everybody at Summit of course. And the fans."

Last but not least, Pattinson took to the mic amid deafening screams from the crowd. He said he couldn't hear what either of his co-stars said in their speeches, but "can guarantee they both wrote speeches."

His spur-of-the-moment speech was short and sweet, saying, "Thank you so much for the fun, People's Choice. Thank you so much for everything. It's been a wonderful experience."

The People's Choice Awards are not necessarily known for their breakout musical numbers, but Wednesday night's (January 5) show had a few musical surprises, such as Queen Latifah's opening number and Kid Rock's boot-stompin' "God Bless Saturday." However it's safe to say that the biggest musical moment of the evening occurred when teen queen Selena Gomez hit the stage with the Scene to perform her hit "A Year Without Rain."

Gomez had the audience captivated — partly because the song is catchy, but mostly due to the headline-making news that the "Wizards of Waverly Place" star is Justin Bieber's new love interest, and fans were likely intrigued to see how Gomez's musical stylings compared to Bieber's.

Gomez emerged onstage amidst low lights and fog, looking ethereal and slightly more grown-up. Although it wasn't a stadium-rocking performance à la Lady Gaga or Katy Perry, Gomez powered through her pop song with a sense of earnestness and commitment. She didn't even miss a beat when her earpiece appeared to fall out mid-song.

Gomez and her band were presented with the Favorite Breakout Artist award, beating out B.o.B, Ke$ha, Bruno Mars and, curiously enough, Justin Bieber. Gomez was noticeably moved by the recognition. "Thank you so much," she said. "If you let me, I would do this forever."

The teen queen told MTV News earlier this year that her album was partly inspired by her fans.

"I mean, even down from putting the track listing and numbering it, I wanted to make sure I envisioned [fans] putting it in their car or putting it on their iPod and how I wanted them to listen to the record," she explained of the process. "I wanted to make sure it made people feel good, but I also dedicated a couple songs to my fans, because there were moments onstage that I wish I could give to them, because they mean so much to me."

Exclusive: Eminem Relives His 'Struggle' In Grammy Ad Campaign

MTV News brings you a first look at the 30-second spot, debuting Thursday.
By Hillary Crosley

The Grammys are kicking off the new year with a certain Detroit rapper. Eminem is spearheading the Recording Academy's Music Is Life Is Music social-networking and promotional campaign, and MTV News is giving you an exclusive first look at the commercial.

"The camera kind of literally walks through his life," said Bob Rayburn, creative director of ad agency TBWA\Chiat\Day. "It was important to capture his struggle."

The 30-second spot opens with an illustrated interpretation of Em's 8 Mile trailer park, while an announcer says, "Music is a last chance, a last hope, a last shot. Music is turning demons into demos into multiplatinum monsters." As the images continue, a nod to Eminem's fallen friends Ronnie and Proof appear in a digitally produced cemetery, then the voice-over says, "Music is battling through the haze," as shots of newspaper clippings about Slim Shady's drug addiction and divorce float onscreen. As the spot concludes, the music rises into the chorus of Eminem's first Recovery single, "Not Afraid."

The rapper is in the first of three upcoming Grammy commercials, illustrated by design firm National TV. "From start to finish, the commercial took about three months to produce," Patrick Condo, creative director for TBWA\Chiat\Day.

Evan Greene, chief marketing officer of the Recording Academy, says the commercial is only a peek into the campaign's full range, which boasts not just television spots, but also social networking.

"The app and our micro-site allow you to map your musical journey and to note key musical milestones in your life, and you can instantly share it with your entire social network," Greene said. "It gets in front of human behavior, because people are using geo-location to tag where they are and to tag where they're going, and we align that with music.

"So if you're in Bloomfield, Indiana, you can look up on our website's map which of your friends or favorite artists have dropped or tagged pieces of music that are important to their journey. You can do it on your app or go to the Music Is Life Is Music website."

Eminem's piece will debut on all media platforms Thursday, and the print portion of the Grammy campaign begins in two weeks. The Midwest rapper earned 10 Grammy nods, including Song and Record of the Year (for "Love the Way You Lie") and Album of the Year (for Recovery, which is also up for Rap Album of the Year). He also scored noms for Best Rap Solo Performance (for "Not Afraid"), Pop Collaboration With Vocals (for his turn on B.o.B's "Airplanes Part II") and Best Rap Song (for "Lie").

The Grammys air February 13 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Taylor Swift's Dating History: From Joe Jonas To Jake Gyllenhaal

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 09:30 AM PST

We look back at the pop star's boyfriends, some of them more famous than others.
By Jocelyn Vena

Long before her famous boyfriends, Taylor Swift wrote a song about a guy named Drew and found mainstream success with her ballad "Teardrops on My Guitar." Now when Swift writes a tune, while she may not confirm who she's singing about, her muses are a lot more high-profile. And with the news of her breakup with Jake Gyllenhaal, fans will be waiting to hear what she'll sing about the Hollywood hunk in the future. Here's a look back at Swift's dating history.

(Check out photos of Taylor Swift and her past loves.)

Just as she was emerging on the pop scene, rumors began to surface that the blond chanteuse and Joe Jonas were an item. In the summer of 2008, the pair were spotted hanging out, and she danced around the issue when speaking to MTV News about the rumors. "For me, in dealing with things that people write, I try not to let it affect my life," she said. "He's an amazing guy, and anyone would be lucky to be dating him."

Months later, the pair broke up over the phone when Jonas allegedly left Swift for his "Lovebug" video co-star Camilla Belle. Swift wrote a song about it. "And I addressed it, and, you know, that's a chapter in my life that's closed now," she said of the song, "Forever & Always."

Swift kept busy after her split from Jonas, but in late 2009, her "You Belong With Me" co-star Lucas Till admitted that the two had a bit of a fling. "We just really both liked each other," he said. "[But] most relationships work out 'cause you get along and then you don't, and then you make up and it's passionate. And with us I really just liked her as a friend. That's the only reason that didn't work out."

By the time news came out that Swift had dated Till, she was already dating her "Valentine's Day" co-star Taylor Lautner. They met in the summer of 2009 and while they never publicly addressed the relationship, they were spotted hanging out together until their breakup in December 2009. In October 2010, Swift admitted she'd always have a crush on him, saying, "Taylor Lautner. It's always going to be Taylor."

In 2010, Swift had been rumored to be dating John Mayer, about whom she allegedly wrote her song "Dear John," "Glee" star Cory Monteith, and even her "Mine" co-star Toby Hemingway, never owning up to any of the rumors. "I write in great detail about my personal life," she explained of addressing rumors. "But I don't talk about it."

But her brief romance with Jake Gyllenhaal in the fall of 2010 caused the most headlines. They reportedly began dating in October, and although they never spoke about one another publicly, they were photographed holding hands and being generally adorable until it was learned this week that the couple had split.

Paramore Move On, In A Small Town That Doesn't

Bigger Than the Sound goes behind the scenes in Tennessee; see more in 'Paramore: The Last Word,' live on Friday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com.

Franklin, Tennessee, is not exactly the kind of place you find yourself visiting twice within the span of 14 months (unless you really love chili cook-offs), and yet, I did.

In September 2009, I flew down there to spend the day with Paramore, who were on the verge of releasing their Brand New Eyes album and were, as I put it, poised to become "the Kings and Queen of the South." That probably didn't happen, but boy, did I believe it at the time. The band — reinvigorated by the resolution of the internal conflicts that had plagued them (resolutions that make up the very core of the album) — seemed happy, laughing and joking with one another as we ate lunch at Puckett's Grocery, rode bikes up to the local Goodwill, and hung around frontwoman Hayley Williams' house. It really seemed like they were primed to take over the planet. Or at least healthy enough to try.

Last week, I went back to Franklin, once again to speak with Paramore. I stayed at the same hotel, drove my rental car down the same rolling country roads, even ate lunch at Puckett's (you get the feeling this is the kind of town where not much ever changes), but the circumstances surrounding my trip were completely different. The planet had not been conquered, and the healing promise of Brand New Eyes seemed a distant memory. It was days after the band had announced their split with founding members Josh and Zac Farro, and the remaining members reached out to me to discuss the entire incident, for the first and, I was told, last time.

And while we'll go in-depth on my interview with the band during MTV News' "Paramore: The Last Word" live stream (Friday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com), it's important to know the rather incredible backstory that went into making it happen — and just how different everything was when I arrived in town.

This was, after all, an interview that came together in three days, beginning with an e-mail from the label on December 27 (when New York still resembled Hoth), followed by an improbable, last-minute flight to Nashville on the 29th (while lines of stranded travelers hoped against hope to get anywhere) and culminating in a no-holds-barred, everything-on-the-table sit down in Williams' basement on the 30th. When I was told that the band wanted to address the issue before the end of 2010, it wasn't just hyperbole. They couldn't wait to turn the page, put all of this behind them and start fresh in the New Year.

And as I drove to that interview — playing Brand New Eyes in the rental car — I was struck immediately by just how much the album had changed for me. Originally, I had interpreted its kiss-off missives as being about nameless naysayers and faceless detractors, but now, knowing everything that had happened, it became clear to me that Eyes is almost entirely about the conflict between Williams and Josh Farro. Lines like, "It has to be so lonely/ To be the only one who's holy," and, "Where's your gavel, your jury/ What's my offense this time?" were blow-by-blow accounts of the struggle between the lead singer and the lead guitarist, who not only wrote the majority of the album, but also dated each other. This was real, palpable vitriol ... the stuff that, ultimately, led to the Farros leaving the band.

When I arrived at Williams' house, I was determined to ask her about those lyrics, and, to her credit, she didn't deny that any of them were about Farro. She didn't deny anything, really — the hurt feelings, the frustration, the confusion — and neither did bandmates Taylor York and Jeremy Davis. In fact, aside from how much their entire situation had deteriorated, Paramore's honesty was the thing that impressed me the most. They answered all of Farro's charges, and there wasn't a single topic that was off limits. Sure, there was a sadness in the room, a genuine sense of heartbreak, because you got the feeling that the three actually believed that Brand New Eyes had healed them, but they put on a brave face, not for themselves (as they told me repeatedly), but for their fans.

We spoke for nearly an hour, said our goodbyes, and I headed to the airport. On the plane back to New York, I kept thinking about how I had taken this same exact flight a year ago, and how different things had become. You don't have to be in a band to understand why this happened. The same dynamic applies to any group of friends, especially when one is singled out and given the lion's share of the attention. Feelings are hurt. Things are said. Most of the time, they can't be unsaid, and the story ends much like it has with Paramore. It's a shame, but it's also life.

Only, Paramore are adamant that the story doesn't end here. They are pressing on, planning big things (which you'll hear about in the live stream) and determined not to let their fans down. They recognize all the bad that has happened, but change is not necessarily a bad thing. Of course, I found it ironic that they were talking about it in a place that seems practically change-proof, but perhaps that's the point: Franklin may stay forever the same, but Paramore will not. And maybe I'll be making another trip down to Tennessee this year, to marvel at just how different things have become. Once again.

Robert Pattinson has signed on for his first big post-"Twilight" lead role.

The actor is set to star in David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis." According to Deadline, Pattinson will play Eric Packer in the futuristic film, an adaptation of the novel by Don DeLillo.

In the film version, Packer is described as "a financial wunderkind," who risks his entire fortune to bet against Japan's yen on a tumultuous day. His chancy move puts him in mortal danger. The flick is said to be "a drama that is a study of capitalism in a slightly futuristic metropolis."

The novel is a modern reinterpretation of James Joyce's classic "Ulysses," set in New York City in the year 2000, around the burst of the dot-com bubble. Most of the action in the book takes place over the course of one day, in the limousine Packer takes to his various errands.

Other stars rumored to have signed up for the project include "Inception" star Marion Cotillard and Paul Giamatti. Deadline reported that Pattinson wanted the role because he is a big fan of Cronenberg's work and an admirer of DeLillo's books.

The "Twilight" superstar is still hard at work on the vampire franchise. He'll appear again as Edward Cullen in the two-part finale "Breaking Dawn," the first of which opens in November. But up next, he'll hit the big screen in the Depression-era romance "Water for Elephants," alongside Reese Witherspoon.

Acknowledging what millions of Pattinson fans already know, Witherspoon recently gushed to MTV News that her co-star is "extraordinarily attractive."

"Jersey Shore" star Pauly D was nothing if not at home when he stopped by the MTV News offices on Wednesday (January 5), joking about his whirlwind publicity tour before the new season's premiere and marveling at how crazy his life has become. It's a home he's going to be getting used to, as the record-spinning hotshot has nabbed his own MTV spin-off show.

The show's format is still in the works — Pauly and his pals shot a pilot in September — but the reality star gave us a good idea about what the show's going to be about.

"We threw around some ideas that maybe could be about my life, before the show and now after the show, maybe bring my entourage along," he told us.

Pauly went on to add that the show will focus on his fish-out-of-hair-gel story, as the Rhode Island native went from an anonymous DJ to the star of the biggest show in MTV history.

"It'll be probably along the lines of, I used to be this DJ in Rhode Island, DJing two sets a week, hustling, promoting," he explained, "and all of a sudden, I'm on this show, and now they're sending private jets for me to DJ for these huge crowds, yet I'm still the same guy that was DJing for 200 people, just loving life."

Said Chris Linn, MTV's production head, "[Pauly's] distinguished himself onscreen as the fun-loving, well-coiffed and dependable guy you can't help but want to hang out with. We know viewers are curious about his life away from the shore and we look forward to exploring new possibilities around that."

The new season of "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday night at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

The second day of testimony in the preliminary hearing of Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, featured damning testimony from one of the late King of Pop's bodyguards about Murray's actions in the critical minutes after the singer was found unresponsive.

After a former Jackson staffer testified Tuesday that Murray appeared to not know how to perform CPR properly, security guard Alberto Alvarez said on Wednesday (January 5) that the cardiologist frantically grabbed medical evidence from the star's bedroom before instructing Alvarez to call 911.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Alvarez said he was the first person to walk into Jackson's bedroom after Murray realized his patient was not breathing, where he found the cardiologist administering chest compressions with one hand while Jackson lay on his bed, which goes against the recommended procedure for the life-saving method.

"I said, 'Dr. Murray, what happened?' " Alvarez told the court. " 'He had a bad reaction, he had a bad reaction,' that's all he said." Alvarez choked up as he described how Jackson's daughter, Paris, followed him into the room and screamed when she saw her father sprawled out and unresponsive on the bed.

He said Murray then instructed him to get the children out of the room, noticing as he left that Jackson's penis was out of his underwear and that medical tubing was attached to it. When Deputy District Attorney David Walgren asked Alvarez if he knew what a condom catheter was, the security guard said he did not.

Alvarez said he then witnessed Murray grabbing a handful of bottles, which he instructed the security guard to put in a bag. He told the court that he held open the bag as the doctor dropped the bottles of medicine inside and then put it in a brown canvas bag on the floor, per Murray's instructions. Murray also allegedly told Alvarez to grab one of the two bags hanging on an IV stand next to Jackson's bed and put it in another bag. Alvarez said he noticed a "milk-like substance" in the bottom of the IV bag.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's office determined that Jackson died of an acute intoxication of propofol, a powerful surgical anesthetic sometimes referred to as "milk of amnesia" thanks to its milky white appearance. Only after the medical materials had been put away did Murray tell Alvarez to call 911.

"After you had collected the bottles per Dr. Murray's instructions, and after you had collected the bags per Dr. Murray's instructions, did Dr. Murray instruct you to call 911?" Walgren asked. "Yes, sir," Alvarez responded.

TMZ reported that during cross-examination, defense attorney Ed Chernoff got Alvarez to admit that he never told police about Murray ordering him to remove the bottles and Alvarez later admitted that he may try to sell his story.

Later in the day, EMT Richard Senniff testified that he arrived at the Jackson home, just four minutes after the 911 call was placed. According to TMZ, Senniff said that, based on the condition of Jackson's body, it appeared that Murray waited at least 20 minutes to call 911. Senniff also stated that when he asked Murray what meds Jackson had been administered, he only listed lorazepam (Ativan).

Jackson cook Kai Chase also testified, revealing the food she prepared for Jackson prior to his death (seared ahi tuna and salad, white bean Tuscan soup) and that she knew something was wrong when Murray came downstairs in a panic and summoned Jackson's son, Prince.

The preliminary hearing is aimed at determining whether there is enough evidence to try Murray on a felony count of involuntary manslaughter in the June 2009 death of the King of Pop. It is expected to last two to three weeks.

James Van Der Beek is showing Pacey how it's done. The actor teamed up with Funny or Die this week to show the world just how funny he can be thanks to a group of clips he created that poke fun at his sensitive "Dawson's Creek" image.

"I mean, I've loved the stuff that Funny or Die has been doing," Van Der Beek told MTV News. "And I thought, 'I want to play; this can be fun.' And they're just great guys and we talked about stuff."

From there, the brainstorming began, and Van Der Beek was happy to make others laugh at his expense. In "Vandermemes," the actor decides to bank on a widely circulated gif of Dawson Leery crying and offers other useful expressions for online use. In the second video, "A--hole for Hire," he tries to make up for making men still suffer when their girlfriends compare them to his über-sensitive character.

Van Der Beek explained it was a great way to let everyone know he's in on the crying meme joke. "It's one of those things people always get me on Twitter. Like, they'll tweet me something, and it's always a trick," he said. "And then [I'll click on the link] and it's the shot of me crying, and I laugh every time. I think it's hysterical. I mean, you do a show for six years, and it all gets reduced to a five-second clip of poor Dawson crying. It tickles my funny bone."

There's even a JamesVanDerMemes.com site, complete with every gif a fan could ever wish for. "I thought, 'That's so ridiculous, I think it's something I have to do,' " he laughed. "I didn't realize it would take on a life of its own, but it's all in the name of making the funny."

Asked if he had to pick his favorite meme to sum himself up, he laughed, "It depends on what kind of Van Der Mood I'm in."

Van Der Beek also revealed that there are more videos to come. "I think the more ridiculous the better with Funny or Die," he said. "I had so much fun hosting 'SNL' when I got to do it that this is kind of what that felt like, the same kind of energy. ... I'm such a goof anyway in real life."

'Jersey Shore' Star Snooki Talks Hangover Cures, Ditching Pouf

Reality star tells 'Ellen' hard partying has sometimes left her asking, 'Why did I wake up in a garbage can?'

Ellen DeGeneres' bond with "Jersey Shore" star Snooki stretches back to last February, when the comedian first welcomed the reality star onto her talk show. The following month, while assessing a particularly memorable "American Idol" performance, the ex-judge remarked to a contestant, "Like Snooki's pouf, you just stand out."

Later in the year, Ellen dressed up as that pouf for Halloween, and on Wednesday's (January 5) episode of the "Ellen" show — she joked that she'd finally taken down her pumpkin-themed holiday decorations — the host welcomed Snickers back onto the program for a chat. Their conversation veered from the reality star's signature hairstyle to what we can expect from new "Shore" episodes to her hard-partying ways.

"If I am hung over, the best cure is to drink margaritas the morning of, and you're fine," she said. "Or mimosas with your eggs.

"I want to remember my night, and sometimes I just don't," she added. "It sucks. So you're like, 'What did I do? Why did I wake up in a garbage can?' "

So, um, how often do such things happen? "Once a month," she joked, before saying that she's toned down her drinking recently. Snooki has also made a commitment to get into shape, showing Ellen some workout moves and saying of two oversize exercise balls, "These are big balls."

Shaping up and saying no to those extra late-night vodka shots aren't the only changes coming to Snooki's life. She's also ditched the pouf, opting for a straight, bang-bedecked hairdo. "I'm so over it," she said.

Before saying goodbye to Ellen, Snooki explained a little of what's coming down the line on "Jersey Shore" this season.

"The new season is insane," she said. "We'll fight one minute and then the next minute we'll be like, 'You want a shot?' We're fine. It's so weird. I think that's how brothers and sisters are like, minus the hookups."

The new season of MTV's "Jersey Shore" premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

Michelle Williams Says Heath Ledger Comments 'Did Cross A Line'

'Blue Valentine' star says 'Nightline' 'edited the piece to sell the interview.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Michelle Williams sat down with "Nightline" recently, and in the process of talking about her film "Blue Valentine," she also opened up about the 2008 death of Heath Ledger, her ex-boyfriend and the father of her daughter, Matilda. When Williams spoke to The Daily Beast about that interview, she revealed some regret about how those comments were presented.

"Just recently I felt as if I did cross a line about all this," she explains. "Yet if I'm going to do interviews and be in this world, I don't want to seem as if I'm just taking a party line. I want to say something that is representative of who I am and what I'm thinking about and what matters to me in the same ways that I want to do that in my work because my work and my life do feed off each other. The two do go together."

The actress goes on to note that she feels some of the blame also falls on the show. "When it comes to interviews, it all becomes rather tricky because I don't want to say something without resonance but then I don't want to go too far. I just had an experience with 'Nightline' that got edited in such a way that seemed as if I did go too far.

"It was a three-hour interview that was edited in such a way that was devastating to me," she says. "They edited the piece to sell the interview, and it appeared as if I were breaking some kind of silence and sitting down with the express purpose to discuss something that is very private to me."

Williams admits that even though she wants to keep some things private, she often opens up naturally. "And I say, 'OK, this subject is off-limits if it is going to be convoluted and re-contextualized.' ... But then I sit down with you and feel compelled to talk about it," she describes. "So it is a struggle."

Williams says she has been trying to find a balance in the nearly three years since Ledger died, and it was especially hard in the time right after his passing.

"How do I talk about this? I experienced a lot of loss after his death. I lost my city because of all the paparazzi descending upon us. I actually lost my journal during that time, oddly enough. I literally couldn't hold on to anything," she recalls. "I lost my sense of humor. I'm still sort of looking for that."
