'American Idol' Lennon/McCartney Week: What Should The Top Nine Sing? Posted: 06 Apr 2010 03:52 AM PDT We help the remaining contestants navigate the Beatles songbook.
"American Idol" introduced its first-ever Beatles theme week in March 2008. Armed with access to the finest songs in the Lennon/McCartney catalog, the show gave us melodious highs (Brooke White's stripped-down, barefoot-at-the-piano "Let It Be") and wince-inducing lows (David Archuleta's nearly lyric-free "We Can Work It Out"). Two seasons later, the Lennon/McCartney songbook is back in the "Idol" fold. Should Crystal Bowersox stroll down Abbey Road? Might Michael Lynche take us on a Magical Mystery Tour? Will "Teflon" Tim Urban have us screaming Help!? Let's take a look at which tunes the "Idol" hopefuls should select for Tuesday's (April 6) show.
Crystal Bowersox Michael Lynche Siobhan Magnus Lee Dewyze Casey James Tim Urban Katie Stevens Andrew Garcia Aaron Kelly Do you have any great song ideas for the "Idol" top nine? Nicole Scherzinger Addresses 'Dancing With The Stars' Romance Rumors Posted: 06 Apr 2010 03:52 AM PDT 'I don't even know where they get these stories sometimes,' she tells MTV News of reports linking her to partner Derek Hough.
Nicole Scherzinger and dance partner Derek Hough may have the kind of chemistry on the dance floor that gains them a large fanbase and high scores on "Dancing With the Stars," but the Pussycat Doll insisted it's strictly business.
When MTV News caught up with Scherzinger at rehearsals for the show, she cleared the air about the romance rumors. "I don't even know where they get these stories sometimes," she said, a sentiment similar to one she tweeted about — even alluding to her actual romance. "Been reading the net & seeing the craziest stories ... Derek is like a little brother 2 me," she wrote. "Everyone knows how in luv & committed I am 2 [boyfriend, race car driver] Lewis [Hamilton]!" In fact, in regards to their latest routine, she compared their chemistry to "two old jolly sailors chumming around." So do these "chums" get up to any shenanigans in their downtime? "We don't have too much downtime from rehearsals, to be honest with you," she said. "Right now, it's crunch time. It's kind of a stressful period." With Hough out of the picture, is there anyone else on the show she has a crush on? "I have a softness in my heart for Buzz [Aldrin]. I kind of have a crush on him," she shared. "I haven't [told him], but I just show it to him when I hug. He's just the sweetest guy and his wife is the cutest thing ever, people. I don't know if people at home see it, but whenever Buzz is onstage or anywhere near her she's always so excited." What do you think of Nicole and Derek's chemistry? Tell us in the comments! |
Consequence Works With Kanye West, Q-Tip On Upcoming Album Posted: 06 Apr 2010 03:52 AM PDT 'I don't need your money, I need your ears,' MC says of his latest mixtape release, to Mixtape Daily.
Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape: Movies on Demand Headliner: Consequence Key Cameos: "Whatever You Want (The G.O.O.D. vs. Bad megamix)" (featuring Kid Cudi, Common, John Legend, the LOX and Diddy), "The More I Get" (featuring Rick Ross) and "Down This Road" (featuring Maino)
Essential Info: Consequence has a whole multimedia movement at hand. The MC who always has a strong viral-video game, is driving home the point that his material requires more than just sitting down and listening to it on an iPod. He just released his latest mixtape Movies on Demand to set up his summer LP Cons TV, named after his series of vlogs a couple of years ago. The official project is being helmed by his label CEO and his legendary cousin, Q-Tip. "This album — the first time ever you have a album executive-produced by Kanye West and Q-Tip, which essentially makes it, from a soundscape point of view, The Blueprint meets Midnight Marauders," he said of West's work on the Jay-Z classic and Tip's work with A Tribe Called Quest. "It's an incredible album." The Jamaica Queens native is also banking that his new tape will get the people on point for the project down the line. "It was incentive — the reason for putting out Movies on Demand was because I really had to drive home the point of what the album was gonna be and sonically what people had to look forward to," Con explained. "Sometimes when you have such a gem ... it catches late. You have to have creative and innovative ways to catch people's interest. That's why I gave the mixtape away for free — I don't need your money, I need your ears. I'll get the paper later. I'll get the paper regardless. But when I have your ears and you're hearing these lines and the authenticity to what hip-hop is — that's priceless. "That's something I grew up on," he added. "Hip-hop has always been something to come out of nowhere, that's why I think with Movies on Demand, it executes all the fundamentals that hip-hop brings to the table from the grassroots level to its highest peak." Consequence just released the video for his Movies on Demand duet with Asher Roth, "Childish Games." For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines. Related Videos |
Exclusive: Drake's Thank Me Later Due June 15 Posted: 05 Apr 2010 04:56 AM PDT MTV News catches up with the rapper before his Away From Home Tour opening night.
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pennsylvania — Monday night (April 5) is a big one for Drake. The 23-year-old performer is opening his Away From Home Tour at Slippery Rock University and is set to take the stage around 9 p.m. ET. Talking to MTV News earlier in the evening, the Young Money franchise player revealed the release date for his much-anticipated debut LP, Thank Me Later: June 15. The date isn't the only gem the "Best I Ever Had" rapper and two-time Grammy nominee dropped. He also revealed that he'll be performing a new song from his album on tour called "Fireworks." So far, Drake has released one single from the upcoming album: "Over." "We took a trip to Jamaica, where I did a lot of work for my album," he told us on the "Over" video set last month. "There was this calm before the storm, and 'Over' represented the storm to me. It's the moment. I wanted to emerge at first from this album and just let people know 'This is how I'm coming out in the public eye. I'm ready for anything.' Then when you get the album, it's like, 'Oh, he's still human. He's still thinking the same way.' I wanted people to understand I could have lost it. 'Over' could have been my entire album. Just 'cause that's what this industry and game will do to you if you lose yourself." Drake's Away From Home Tour goes on for the next couple of months with openers Francis and the Lights and K-os. "They're killing it right now," Drake said shortly after taking in Francis and the Lights' set on Monday. Will Drake's album be deemed a classic when it comes out on June 15? Let us know in the comments! Stick with MTV News for much more from Drake's opening night. Related Artists |
Kelis Works With 'Amazing' Benny Benassi, David Guetta On Remix EP Posted: 06 Apr 2010 03:52 AM PDT 'Acapella,' the first single from Flesh Tone, gets the dance-music treatment.
Acapella — The Remixes, an EP of electronic variations of the first single off Kelis' forthcoming Flesh Tone album is available digitally Tuesday (April 6), featuring production from a handful of Kelis' apparent favorites from the dance/electronic music world. The original version of "Acapella" was produced by current dance-music crossover star David Guetta, so it's not surprising he maintains an extended mix on the EP.
Notably, Kelis also teamed up with Grammy Award-winning Italian dance-music producer Benny Benassi recently, the results of which are a Benassi-helmed remix of "Acapella," Benassi's upcoming single "Spaceship" and another song on Flesh Tone. MTV News caught up with both Kelis and Benassi just before they took the stage to perform both "Acapella (Benny Benassi Remix)" and "Spaceship" at the recent Ultra Music Festival in Miami for a crowd of close to 100,000 people. The occasion marked the first time the duo performed the song together for a live audience. "He's amazing," Kelis said. "He's been amazing. He did a remix for me ... that's ridiculous. I just think his take on stuff is very him. You recognize his sound, and that's important for a producer. I love the fact that I can give him a record to remix and it literally sounds like a new song." "This was a big opportunity for us," Benassi said. "To work with her ... it's a beautiful experience because we get to put our bass line and our energy for dance music with a beautiful voice." Other producers included on Acapella — The Remixes EP are L.A. house DJ/producer Dave Audé and U.K.-based dance-music trio Bimbo Jones. Are you looking forward to Kelis' new album? Hayley Williams Calls Cameo With Eminem On B.o.B's Album 'Incredible' Posted: 05 Apr 2010 12:04 AM PDT 'I'm so proud to be a part of this!' Paramore frontwoman tells MTV News
He may already be Justin Bieber's favorite rapper, but on his debut album, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, Atlanta's own B.o.B is looking to expand that fanbase even further — to the Warped Tour set. In addition to cameos by the likes of T.I. and Lupe Fiasco, Adventures also features Weezer's Rivers Cuomo on a track (which isn't that much of a stretch, considering Rivers is practically a member of Young Money at this point) and, oddly enough, Paramore's Hayley Williams, who lends her vocals to a pair of songs on the album, one of which also features Eminem. Needless to say, the idea of Hayley and Em sharing vocal duties raised our eyebrows just a bit, which is why we sent an e-mail to the Paramore frontwoman to ask her all about the song and just how she ended up appearing on B.o.B's record in the first place. "I was given the track a while ago while we were on tour. The guys and I all loved it. They told me I was crazy if I passed it up," Williams told MTV News. "I liked the part too much anyways, so of course I was down. "I only found out about Eminem getting on the track like a month ago. As if the song couldn't get any better. He just slays me, he's such a genius. And I'm a big B.o.B fan. Got everything of his that I've been able to get my hands on," she continued. "Whether our fans know or not, I'm not sure, but [Paramore bassist ] Jeremy [Davis] and I have always been really into hip-hop. It means a lot that I got to collaborate with a hip-hop artist who is from Atlanta. Not far from home. We Southern gals love us some Southern gentlemen." Williams appears solo on a song called "Airplanes," and then she's joined by Eminem on an album-closing reprise, which, appropriately enough, is called "Airplanes (Part II)." But what do the tracks sound like? Well, Williams wouldn't tell us much, which means Paramore fans are just gonna have to wait until B.o.B's album drops April 27. "Both versions of the track are incredible, that's all I'll say," she wrote. "I'm so proud to be a part of this!" Are you excited to hear Hayley's collabos with B.o.B? Cobra Starship Recap MTV's Musical March Madness Tournament Posted: 05 Apr 2010 03:23 AM PDT Who will win the championship: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria?
You could call MTV's Musical March Madness many things (and, in light of Tokio Hotel's Final Four ousting, some of their fans already are), but "predictable" is not one of them. This was, after all, a tournament determined entirely by your votes, which meant that, really, anything was possible — a fact we quickly realized when three of the four #1 seeds lost in the opening round (and the fourth lost in the second). It was a tournament defined by upsets and run by underdogs, be they the Hold Steady or Panic! at the Disco, Patrick Stump or Alice in Chains — or, most notably, Tokio and Coheed and Cambria, two bands who were basically tossed into the tournament at the last minute and made it to the Final Four. In Coheed's case, they made it all the way to the championship game, where they'll face off against My Chemical Romance — you know, a band that hasn't released a new album in almost four years and is currently without a drummer.
Basically, this whole thing made absolutely zero sense. Watching it unfold was a total blast, but attempting to recap the whole thing has seemed nearly impossible. That's why we turned to a pair of sportscasting legends who know a thing or two about pulling off the impossible — CSPN analysts Dick Bagwell and Vincent Twice — to do the recapping for us. (And yes, we're aware they look very much like Cobra Starship's Ryland Blackinton and Alex Suarez; we'll just chalk that up to a coincidence.) With voting now under way in our championship matchup over on the Newsroom blog, we figured now would be a pretty good time to roll out Bagwell and Twice's tournament recap. Watch it while you vote. Perhaps it will help sway you one way or the other (that Dick is a persuasive guy — trust us). We'll crown our Musical March Madness champion on Wednesday. Who are you pulling for in the championship game: My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria? Let us know in the comments below! And make your vote count by hitting the Newsroom blog. Rihanna, David Archuleta, Jason Derulo To Perform On 'American Idol' Posted: 05 Apr 2010 05:16 AM PDT Archuleta will reprise his breakout performance of 'Imagine' for Lennon/McCartney week.
For the second time in three years, "American Idol" contestants are taking on the works of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. This time, they're doing it with a little help from their friends. Fox announced Monday (April 5) that this week's results program, airing Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET, will feature performances by Rihanna, singing "Te Amo"; Jason Derülo, singing "In My Head"; and season-seven runner-up David Archuleta, performing Lennon's "Imagine." While this is the first appearance on the wildly popular show for Rihanna and Derülo, 19-year-old Archuleta is of course most widely known for his run on the program, making his mark during season seven with his showcase performance of the erstwhile Beatle's famous solo hit. The song, in fact, became a calling card of sorts for the then-17-year-old crooner, who first performed it in only his second week on the show. At the time, his rendition of the tune catapulted him to front-runner status, leaving then-judge Paula Abdul teary-eyed and igniting a wellspring of support. Archuleta made it all the way to the final show, failing only to beat rival David Cook. Rihanna, Derülo and Archuleta are the latest high-profile singers to be featured on "Idol" this year, following performances from Diddy-Dirty Money and Usher last week and Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas the week before. Songs from the Lennon/McCartney playbook were originally featured in the first two weeks of the season-seven finals. What are you expecting from Rihanna's and Derülo's "Idol" debuts? Are you excited to see Archie return to the "Idol" stage? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists |
Dr. Dre Announces Jay-Z Collabo, 'Under Pressure' Posted: 04 Apr 2010 10:05 PM PDT Rapper and Interscope head Jimmy Iovine confirm the new track at Boston Red Sox game.
Could Detox really be around the corner? The long-awaited, almost mythical album by music legend Dr. Dre sounds like it is officially starting up. Last week, E! News correspondent Michael Yo tweeted that Dre and Jay-Z had a new single coming that Interscope was very excited about, and a photo of the two timeless hip-hop kings in the studio surfaced on the Net. Then on Sunday night, during the Red Sox's opening night at Fenway Park in Boston, Dre confirmed the new song and revealed the title. The Doc and Interscope head Jimmy Iovine participated in a little batting practice, promoted the Sox-themed Beats by Dr. Dre headphones and spoke briefly about the new single, "Under Pressure," to sports network NESN. When reporter Heidi Watney asked what his at-bat song would be, Iovine responded, "The new song Dre has in his pocket, called 'Under Pressure.' It's a brand new single by Dr. Dre and Jay-Z. That's the song I would use." (At press time, a release date for the song had not been announced.) "Absolutely, that would be it," agreed Dre, who told MTV News back in October Jay had been writing something for Detox. " 'Under Pressure.' It's so fitting." When Dre was asked who from the Red Sox he would want to use "Under Pressure" as their at-bat theme, the production great said it wasn't even a question: David Ortiz. "Absolutely, Big Papi." And how are Dre's hitting skills? Doc, who wore a Red Sox jersey with the number "808" on it, told Watney that he would be OK, though he was "a little bit nervous." "I was cool until I walked on the field," he said. "Now, it's a little intimidating. I played a little bit as a kid. But I did go the batting cage a couple of times before today, so I'll think I'll be all right." Are you still eagerly awaiting Dr. Dre's Detox? Can it possibly live up to the build-up? Share your thoughts and predictions in the comments below. Related Artists |
