Notorious B.I.G.'s Music Gets New Life On 'Video Remix Collection'

Posted: 30 Mar 2010 03:51 AM PDT

Ralph McDaniels and J.Period blend Biggie's songs with new beats and visuals on the mixtape DVD, in Mixtape Daily.

Don't Sleep: Necessary Notables

Mixtape DVD: "March 9: Video Remix Collection"

Headliners: The Notorious B.I.G., Ralph McDaniels and J.Period

Key Cameos: No guest stars, but you have to check for the blends. "Flava in Ya Ear" over the track from Jay-Z's "P.S.A." "Hypnotize" over the track from Eric B and Rakim's "Paid in Full." "One More Chance" over the instrumental from Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long" and the Gap Band's "Outstanding."

Essential Info: Ralph McDaniels is hip-hop. He's been documenting the culture since the beginning. In the early '80s, McDaniels, then a college student, would tape footage of hip-hop godfathers like Grand Master Flash and Melle Mel, not because he had an outlet to put it on, but because he knew in his heart that the culture had to be recorded. Thirty years later, McDaniels can be considered an architect himself, with his New York-based video program "Video Music Box" becoming a staple in rap. It was the place where you could find all videos from new artists as well as the stars every day after school. Jay-Z, Wu-Tang Clan, BBD, KRS-One and countless others not only sent their videos in, they gave McDaniels interviews at a time when we didn't see much hip-hop on TV.

One of McDaniels' favorite subjects was the Notorious B.I.G. Uncle Ralph described Biggie as being very serious in the booth but a jokester that could rival the Kings of Comedy when he wasn't working. McDaniels also remembers Biggie as a "student of the game."

"I have footage of him at a Big Daddy Kane concert, and he was just in the crowd," McDaniels told Mixtape Daily. "He was a student of the game. He knew Kane was an MC from Brooklyn that came early. That told me a lot. He wasn't anybody yet; he was just a cat trying to get on. To be around a guy like that, hilarious. I would want to be a Junior M.A.F.I.A. member just to be down with that cat there."

McDaniels recently teamed with J.Period to salute Big Poppa with a collection of remix videos called "March 9: Video Remix Collection."

"This thing was kinda the next evolution of the March 9th remix project I started on the 10th anniversary of Big passing with my man G. Brown," Period explained. "I been speaking to Ralph for a minute — I love what he does; he likes what I do with the mixtapes — about finding a way to collabo. This seems like the best first step: Find somebody like Big, take the remixes and see what happens. When you set it to video, it takes it to life in a whole new way."

"I always like looking for something new, something different," McDaniels said. "I was familiar with J.Period's original CD mixtape. I was like, 'This is kinda dope.' That's when we started talking about it. So I'll take the visuals. Sometimes, the visuals don't match, because there might be edits and all kinds of things like that involved. I have to find something that fits for that particular scene. I have to use my imagination and think about the fans as well. What would they like to see? Because I'm a music-video person, I live for the visuals. ... We try to input some of these things in to the video mixes. Biggie don't have a lot of videos he did, maybe only like five or six videos he was in. So we had to get creative. Thankfully, the ones we put out, they were ones he had videos for. But there's some songs like 'Party and Bullsh--' that there were no videos for. But there's footage out there of him performing. That's the creative stuff we had to work on fitting it together."

Erykah Badu's 'Window Seat' Video Is Meant To 'Inspire,' Directors Say

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 06:55 AM PDT

'She wanted to show expression,' Coodie of Creative Control tells MTV News.
By Shaheem Reid

Erykah Badu's "Window Seat" video almost didn't end with the singer getting shot on the grassy knoll where JFK was assassinated. Several endings were tossed around, including one where a naked Badu turned the camera away from herself and onto her camera crew, who were also going to be nude.

The fatal ending was a group effort between Badu and the video's directors, Coodie and Chike of Creative Control.

"She's evolving," Coodie said. "So it's almost like you have to kill off the other person to do that."

"It was also to tie [the JFK assassination] in," Chike added. "He was assassinated there for what reason? There were reasons for his assassination that dealt with him doing things that went against the norm for positive reasons. People try to assassinate your character when you try to step against the grain. That's where the gunshot in the video came. Also, she was inspired by the Matt and Kim video [for 'Lessons Learned'], where they did something shocking in the end."

Badu's video debuted Sunday on her Web site at 3:03 a.m. (Badu has a thing for the number three. Her album New Amerykah 2: Return of the Ankh will be released on 3/30, and they started filming the video at precisely 3:33 p.m. on St. Patrick's Day.) In the clip, Badu walks to the grassy knoll, stripping down along the way. Finally, she gets shot in the head, and as she lay nude on the concrete, the words "Group Think" leak from her head instead of blood.

"It was this redneck out there," Coodie recalled of the shoot. "She was yelling, 'Put your clothes on! There's kids out here!' She kept going on. Then, there was people out there that was looking. I was like, 'It's just a freedom of expression.' And they was like, 'You're right.' This one guy said that. It was cool."

The directing duo, who also produced Kanye West's "Jesus Walks" and "Through The Wire," said they've seen a mostly positive reaction to "Window Seat" on the Web.

"I've actually been seeing way more positive reactions than I have negative reactions," Chike said. "That's cool to see, just in the times today. I feel like five years ago, it might have been different. Society has grown, so we accept something like this more than normal, than we usually would. I was nervous. You know how you're excited to put something out, then you get that second emotion: 'What if people don't respond to it how they should respond to it?' I was nervous when I went on the comments first."

Although Badu's actions in the video are slowed down through editing, "Window Seat" was shot in real time. It took the length of the song to shoot the video. Originally, Badu was going to sing as she walked but decided not to. Days before she went in front of the camera, Badu spoke to her children, all three of their fathers and other family members to make sure everyone was OK with what she was going do. Everyone supported her. Then she had her own insecurities to deal with.

"That was a concern of hers," Chike said about the singer getting naked. "Her body, she's a vegetarian, she also has three kids. So she was like, 'I haven't worked out,' but it was cool. Nobody was trippin' on that. Everybody thought she was super sexy. She has big assets, thick assets. ... That totally wasn't the point of the video. [She was] not trying to show off those things."

"She wanted to show expression," Coodie added. "It was inspired by the Matt and Kim video. She said when she watched that, she got teary-eyed. We needed to be free too. That was her whole thing. She hopes her video can inspire people as well."

Lil Wayne Not Involved In Weekend Brawl, Rikers Island Source Says

Source says Wayne is doing 'well' in jail.

From all indications, Lil Wayne is doing fine in prison. He began his sentence on March 8 and arrived at Rikers Island later that day, and last week, his friend and associate Mack Maine posted a message on Twitter saying: "Jus left Rikers Island ... Spoke wit Wayne for 2hrs ... He's good. Told me to tell y'all wadup ... Special website komin soon ... #thank God ... LUV."

On Monday (March 29), a source inside Rikers Island who asked that his name not be made public gave MTV News some observations about how Wayne is holding up.

"He's doing well. He's adapting to the situation," the source said, adding that Wayne was not involved in a brawl that took place at the facility over the weekend in which 13 officers and three inmates were injured, according to New York's Daily News. The incident reportedly occurred after inmates refused to be locked in for the night, and did not take place in the area of the facility where Wayne is being held.

The source also scotched a rumor that Wayne got into a confrontation with another inmate just days after his sentencing.

"That's a rumor I heard, but nothing substantiated," the source said, adding that Wayne is usually in protective custody and, for the most part, has been getting a positive reaction from inmates. However, the source said that some inmates seem not to be aware of his situation.

"While he's walking the hallways, he's told not to communicate with these guys," the source explained. "So they're a bit disgruntled because he's not hollering back."

Wayne was sentenced to a year in prison on gun-possession charges and could be released after serving eight months, assuming good behavior.

Kristin Cavallari had all eyes on her when she made a cameo appearance at Heidi and Spencer's wedding. But during her official return to "The Hills," at a party hosted by Speidi, a catfight quickly ensued between Cavallari, Audrina Patridge and Stephanie Pratt over a guy named Justin Bobby. "Hills" fans were immediately surprised to see that Cavallari brought the drama so quickly.

But as for Kristin herself, she couldn't believe a blowout that big took place that early into the season. "The one that really stands out the most to me was the first episode that I was in ... the first episode of the season that I was on," she told MTV News after news broke that the upcoming season of the show will be the last.

"The fight that I got into with Audrina and Stephanie was so out of left field and that was the last thing that I was expecting to happen," she said about her explosive return. "And it was probably one of the biggest fights I've ever been in. So that was just the moment that really stands out the most to me."

While the now-infamous girl fight stands out to Cavallari, at the end of last season she admitted it was an equally scandalous girl kiss that left her a bit embarrassed. "I think that sort of my I-wish-I-didn't moment was when I made out with Stacie in Vegas," she explained. "That was one episode I had to call my dad and say, 'Dad, sorry — this is going to be your least favorite episode.' "

What moment from "The Hills" stands out most to you? Tell us in the comments!

"The Hills: Final Season" premieres April 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT followed by "The City" at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Erykah Badu's 'Window Seat' Joins Long List Of Naked Music Videos

From Alanis Morissette's 'Thank U' to Lady Gaga's 'Telephone,' artists have been stripping down in their clips.
By Gil Kaufman

Nudity and music videos — two great tastes that go great together. From Frankie Goes to Hollywood's raunchy "Relax" in 1983, to Madonna's S&M-fueled "Justify My Love" clip in 1990, artists have been pushing the envelope for years, while mostly letting the extras do the dirty work.

But in the revealing clip for "Window Seat," from Erykah Badu's New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh), the soul high priestess latches on to a lesser-followed path in altogether videos: the full-frontal artist reveal. Over the course of the nearly five-minute, one-take clip, Badu casually strips out of a black overcoat, purple hoodie, black pants, sheer white T-shirt and black underwear and bra as she walks toward the intersection in Dallas where President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. The guerrilla-style video was shot on St. Patrick's Day and Badu tweeted that it went off without a hitch, though she did get heckled by some parents for the stunt.

The intro to the clip pays homage to Matt And Kim's very similar 2009 video for "Lessons Learned," in which the duo strip as they walk through Times Square and Kim gets flattened by a bus at the end. Only in Badu's version, like Kennedy, she is taken out by an unseen assassin's bullet. Badu said she asked for the group's permission to remake their video before filming "Seat," and surely she's aware that music-video history is littered with acres of celebrity skin.

Blink-182 hustled down the streets wearing only their tats in their landmark 1999 "What's My Age Again?" clip, released a year after Alanis Morissette bared it all while doling out hugs to strangers during the "Thank U" video. D'Angelo nearly revealed his naughty bits (and way-chiseled abs) in 2000's "Untitled (How Does It Feel)." Robbie Williams stripped off his clothes (and his skin) to impress girls in the "Rock DJ" video that same year, and Britney Spears wore only some carefully placed sequins in her iconic "Toxic" clip while using her hands and some steam to cover up in 2008's "Womanizer."

More recently, Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne went full monty for "Watching the Planets." And who could forget Lady Gaga nearly showing us her bits in the intro to the epic "Telephone" video?

Did we forget anything? What's your favorite naked video? Let us know in the comments!

Madonna's Daughter Lourdes Will Not Be Starring In Her Next Film

One of many rumors currently circulating about Madonna's next directorial effort, the British royalty biopic "W.E.," is that the pop star-turned-filmmaker has cast her own daughter, Lourdes, in a small role. Though it wouldn't be the first time someone directed their offspring in a movie, Madonna's publicist has told MTV News that the claims are completely false.

In fact, there are no plans at the moment for 13-year-old Lourdes Leon to follow her mother onto the big screen. But the two are indeed working together on a completely different sort of endeavor: a junior fashion line called Material Girl, which will be available exclusively from Macy's beginning this August.

The collection is a collaboration between the mother and daughter duo and designers at Iconix Brand Group (Rocawear, London Fog) and kicks off with back-to-school apparel as well as footwear, handbags and jewelry. A new fragrance could follow in 2011.

The casting rumor came from a French Web site via ThePlaylist.com, and it wasn't the first time young Lourdes has been linked to a possible film role. Back in 2007 British tabloids claimed she was asked to appear in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and also approached to star in a kids' musical. At the time, Madonna was said to be hesitant about allowing her then 11-year-old daughter to enter such spotlights.

"W.E.," which focuses on the scandalous 1936 romance between King Edward VIII and American socialite Wallis Simpson, will be Madonna's second film as a director, following 2008's "Filth and Wisdom." She has also co-written the screenplay with her "Truth or Dare" director Alek Keshishian. So far, the only confirmed star is Abbie Cornish, though it's still unknown what role she will play.

'He's always buying bride magazines,' Perry reveals about Brand.

Katy Perry and Russell Brand got engaged in December, and several months into the wedding planning, it seems that one of the pair has emerged as the bridezilla. It might not be the one you're expecting ...

"Well, I have to plan my [new album, due this summer] first and then I'm going to get to my wedding," she told MTV News on the orange carpet at the Kids' Choice Awards — before she was extravagantly slimed at the show — over the weekend. "But I'm really excited about that, too."

Since Perry is so focused on her career, it's a good thing that Brand is into the whole wedding process. "He's a total bridezilla. He's like a freak, man," she shared about her fiancés hands-on wedding planning. "You should see — he's always, like, buying bride magazines. Every time we go out for breakfast he's like, 'Can we just stop and get a bride magazine?' "

Earlier this year, the happy couple spoke to MTV News about their engagement, where they comically debunked pregnancy rumors, and Perry admitted there were times she was a bit overwhelmed by being betrothed to the English funnyman. "Enough! It's not about the ring," she said, adding that living with Brand, who she started dating after the VMAs last year, is quite wacky. "Right, hello! My crazy-ass life! What am I doing? Whenever I freak out, I go, 'This is what I wanted!'"

What do you think of Russell Brand's status as a bridezilla? Tell us in the comments!

Rapper Flesh-N-Bone, of the Grammy-winning hip-hop group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, was arrested in Ohio on Sunday for assaulting his mother, according to The Associated Press.

The incident occurred in Solon, Ohio, 12 years ago, and the rapper, whose real name is Stanley Howse, was in the local area with his act for a sold-out hometown performance at Cleveland's House of Blues. The concert was part of the group's reunion tour, which they kicked off last Wednesday, and marked Howse's first time in the state in more than a decade. He apparently did not expect two outstanding warrants for his arrest to disrupt the show.

Cuyahoga County Sheriff's deputies planned to take Howse into custody after Bone Thugs-N-Harmony finished their set. However, the rapper spotted the police in the crowd and attempted to make a getaway with help from members of the audience. He was apprehended backstage by one of the deputies with the assistance of the Cleveland Police Department.

Howse remained in jail Monday (March 29) with no legal representation reported. He is charged with domestic violence with a firearm and felonious assault. He allegedly struck his mother in the head with a gun in 1998, leaving her with a 1-inch gash on her forehead.

Since that time, Howse has had other troubles with the law. In 2000, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison in California on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and probation violation after aiming an AK-47 at a friend. He served eight years. In early 2009, he was again arrested for gun possession, but the charges were later dropped.

According to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Web site, a live Ustream chat scheduled for Monday had to be canceled and rescheduled.

MTV's Musical March Madness: We Reach The Sweet 16 -- Vote Now!

Posted: 28 Mar 2010 10:29 PM PDT

Tokio Hotel, 30 Seconds to Mars and more march on in MTV News' Band Bracketology
By James Montgomery

30 Seconds to Mars are poised for domination
Photo: Nigel Crane/ Redferns

We started MTV News' Musical March Madness with 64 bands (well, 65 if you count Against Me!), whittled it down to 32 last week, and now, after hundreds of thousands of votes — and nearly as many ticked-off fans — we've reached the Sweet 16.

Much like the real NCAA tourney, we had upsets, buzzer beaters and even an overtime tilt or two. After some heated, back-and-forth battles, we had heavyweights going down and Cinderella bands dancing on. One of these remaining bands will be crowned champion — and, once again, it'll be up to you to determine who makes it to the Elite Eight.

You can view the updated Band Bracket here, and Sweet 16 voting is now open on the Newsroom blog. Polls will close Tuesday night, so you'd better get cracking.

And now, on to the recaps. All results are based on percentage of votes, in case you were wondering.

Midwest

The region where dreams go to die. Both #11 Shinedown and #10 Breaking Benjamin rolled into the field of 32 with momentum on their sides, and both jumped out to commanding leads over their respective opponents (#14 AFI and #2 Muse) but, in the end, neither band was able to hold on, and both were sent packing. The White Stripes dispensed of pesky 12th-seeded OK Go with relative ease, and, in the bracket's best matchup, 9th-seeded Patrick Stump needed overtime to best the upset-minded Hold Steady, who led early but wilted under Stump's full-court pressure.

The results:

(9) Patrick Stump def. (16) the Hold Steady (OT, Stump won on total votes)
(4) The White Stripes def. (12) OK Go, 60-40
(14) AFI def. (11) Shinedown, 61-39
(2) Muse def. (10) Breaking Benjamin, 53-47

The Midwest's Sweet 16 matchups are #9 Patrick Stump vs. #4 the White Stripes, and #2 Muse vs. #14 AFI.

West

Things continued to be wild out West, with #9 30 Seconds to Mars and #1 Blink-182 going head-to-head in a battle for the ages. Both bands led for extended periods of time, but in the end (thanks to some rather fervent Twitter campaigning by guitarist Tomo Milicevic), the guys in 30 STM pulled off the upset. Fifth-seeded My Chemical Romance rolled #4 Pearl Jam, #15 Panic! at the Disco blasted #7 Death Cab for Cutie, and #14 the Young Veins mounted a furious comeback to nip #6 Weezer.

The results:

(9) 30 Seconds To Mars def. (1) Blink-182, 69-31 (5) My Chemical Romance def. (4) Pearl Jam, 63-37 (14) The Young Veins def. (6) Weezer, 53-47 (15) Panic! at the Disco def. (7) Death Cab For Cutie, 72-28

Which means that, in the West, we've got a pair of totally epic matchups in the Sweet 16: #5 My Chemical Romance vs. #9 30 Seconds to Mars, and — in a battle that pits former bandmates against one another — #14 the Young Veins vs. #15 Panic! at the Disco.

East

Tokio Hotel march on! Originally only making the field of 64 as an afterthought, they knocked off #1 Coldplay in the first round of the tourney, then took it to #8 Radiohead in the second round. At this point, they've got to be the presumptive favorites to come out of the region. In other action, #4 Vampire Weekend outlasted #5 Phoenix in a battle of blog favorites, #3 Owl City nipped #6 Grizzly Bear, and #7 MGMT knocked off #2 Animal Collective.

The results:

(16) Tokio Hotel def. (8) Radiohead, 69-31 (4) Vampire Weekend def. (5) Phoenix, 55-45 (3) Owl City def. (6) Grizzly Bear, 51-49 (7) MGMT def. (2) Animal Collective, 63-37

So in the East, we're left with a rather improbable pair of Sweet 16 matchups: #16 Tokio Hotel vs. #4 Vampire Weekend, and #3 Owl City vs. #7 MGMT. Someone's got to win, right?

South

The region that refuses to be figured out. One week after they shocked the world by upsetting #1 Kings of Leon, 16th-seeded Creed got knocked off by Adam Lambert in rather convincing fashion. 13th-seeded Alice in Chains kept their impossible dream alive by outgunning #12 Nick Jonas (and his Administration), #6 Phish rolled past #3 the Dave Matthews Band and #15 Coheed and Cambria — the band nobody wants to face at this point — knocked off #10 Mastodon.

The results:

(9) Adam Lambert def. (16) Creed, 65-35 (13) Alice in Chains def. (12) Nick Jonas, 56-44 (6) Phish def. (3) Dave Matthews Band, 69-31 (15) Coheed and Cambria def. (10) Mastodon, 68-32

The Sweet 16 matchups in the South should be epic: #9 Adam Lambert vs. #13 Alice in Chains, #6 Phish vs. #15 Coheed and Cambria.

MTV News' Musical March Madness Sweet 16 voting is open now on the Newsroom blog and will run until Tuesday night. Hit the polls, and perhaps you can help your favorite band win a largely arbitrary and non-existent championship!

Ryan James Yezak decided he had to do something for Lady Gaga's birthday after seeing the celeb-filled birthday video friends made for Beyoncé last year. The only problem? He didn't know any actual celebrities.

So he did the next best thing: He put out an open call to Gaga's rather rabid fans, asking them to submit their birthday wishes to Lady G. He figured he'd get some responses, but nothing like what he ended up receiving — more than 150 videos from fans all around the world, some with silly messages and some super-serious (and somewhat heartwarming) ones. It was an eye-opening experience, even for a guy like Yezak, who's pretty used to obsessive fans by now.

"I was amazed, to be honest. I've been a Britney [Spears] fan for a while, so I'm used to obsessed fans — I'm one myself — but I definitely saw people push it with Gaga," Yezak told MTV News. "I didn't expect people to be that open with their love for her. It was touching for me. You didn't have to be her to feel real emotion when you watched the fans. They spoke from their hearts."

Yezak spent roughly four days plowing through the submissions, converting them all, then editing them. He also grabbed all the Gaga videos, performances and instrumental tracks he could get his hands on. His first cut stretched past the 12-minute mark — too long to be uploaded on YouTube — so he was forced to make some hacks. That was by far the most difficult part of the entire process, he said.

"In total, I ended up using 126 different videos. A couple got left out, and I felt horrible about it," he sighed. "But it was an honest mistake. The end result of one guy trying to edit something that was much bigger than he had originally anticipated."

It was hard work — just like his terrific "Telephone" tribute video — but it all paid off Sunday (Gaga's actual birthday) when his muse saw the clip and immediately tweeted about it, writing, "I've never cried so hard in 24 years, from pure joy and unconditional love. Tears still streaming."

Needless to say, Yezak was shocked.

"I had to go to a meeting Sunday, and I was about to hop in the shower when someone sent me a text that said, 'Go to Lady Gaga's Twitter, your day is about to get a whole lot better,' " he said. "I didn't know what to expect, but I saw it, and I was completely blown away. I don't know how to describe the feeling. I got lightheaded, and all of my friends were down at the pool, and I ran down there like, 'Oh My God!' But then I had to go to a meeting and pretend I wasn't thinking about it, even though I was."

Now that he has Gaga's attention, what is he hoping to do next? Why, direct, of course.

"This was the best thing that could possibly happen. No amount of money or anything can compare to having her see it," Yezak said. "Now I want to direct one of her music videos! That would be awesome. The whole reason I started making these is because if stars won't let me direct their videos, I'll just direct my own versions of them."

Usher Says 'Papers' Was Recorded Before His Marriage Ended

Usher said his hit song "Papers" was a case of life imitating art, not the other way around. Speaking with MTV News last week, the singer talked about the song that kicked off his Raymond v. Raymond LP on the radio earlier this year.

"I think people would have immediately alluded to the fact I was talking about my wife when I made that record — and now my ex-wife," he said. "When the song was recorded, I wasn't divorced. It was some reality in the contrast of trying to make it all work, having to balance a career and having a normal life. Coming in at 6 in the morning and arguing was a reality when you have those type of relationships. I felt that in a way, the story did touch on certain things at the time. I didn't know how realistic it would become. I didn't know I would become divorced. I did know it spoke on the contrast between trying to balance this world of being married and having this responsibility that's like a marriage at the same time. The song spoke to that place. Unfortunately, it did become a reality."

In October, Usher's ex-wife, Tameka Foster, told People magazine that "Papers" was just "entertainment" and "people shouldn't take it literally."

"For you, I gave my heart and turned my back against the world/ 'Cause you were my girl, girl, girl," Usher sings on the chorus. "I done damn near lost my mama, I done been through so much drama/ I done turned into the man I never thought I'd be/ I'm ready to sign them papers."

The track is produced by Zaytoven and written by Sean Garrett.

"Let's say I wrote a record for Usher three or four months ago where I really didn't have any idea of what he was going through personally. I work really hard at creating records I feel that's gonna fit like a glove to an artist," Garrett explained back in June. "Me and Usher have a close relationship; I tend to sort of assist certain artists in giving them a direction, where I think they need to go in their next move. I felt that was the direction we needed to go. I felt that was the question everyone wanted to know: Was [his relationship] good or was it bad? Was it right? Are you happy or you're not?"

Raymond v. Raymond drops Tuesday.

Jae Millz Talks Working In The Studio With Lil Wayne

'On a certain day, he might like a certain beat,' Millz tells Mixtape Daily.
By Shaheem Reid

This Week's Main Pick

Street King: Jae Millz

Holding It Down For: Harlem

Mixtape: The Flood

Real Spit: Jae Millz knows the method to getting Lil Wayne on tracks. Several days before Weezy started his one-year prison sentence, The Fireman was in the studio with his Young Money signee. While playing beats, Millz, a native of Harlem, put on a track that had a sample of a voice saying "Rikers Island."

"My boy J. Cardim did it," Millz said of the untitled track. "It's a sample of an old reggae record. ... I was gonna do it because I was gonna talk about my homies that's locked up, but that's not powerful enough. It wouldn't have been that much of a record. So with the situation that's up right now, I happened to stumble across the beat.

"You gotta catch him on a certain day," Millz added about Wayne. "On a certain day, he might like a certain beat. The sh-- might be hot, depending on his mode. He works off whatever mode he's in."

Millz is in assassin mode these days — The Flood is the first of many tapes to come before he drops his official LP.

Joints To Check For

» "The First 48." " 'First 48' is one of my favorite shows on A&E — it deals with reality," Millz explained. "My mixtape deals with reality, but it's kinda like a show in a way. 'The First 48' is the first 48 bars of my show, my reality. I gave them 48 bars. The first 48 bars off the mixtape."

» "Angels." "I had to go in on that," Millz said. "Shout-out to Diddy. I had to go in on this when I heard Ross' verse. I wasn't gonna do it, because to me that's just the 'Where I'm From' beat. No disrespect to Jay-Z, but you know how many times we threw that beat on in a cipher? Or at a radio station, they threw that beat on and I had to go in on that beat? That's a monumental song. But when I heard Ross do it, them first two bars, 'I'm a photographer's dream/ Counting cream as my chain swing.' I was like, 'There are people still out here playing. Here's people in the studio playing, besides the people in my camp.' "

Nicole Scherzinger Picks Her Favorite 'Dancing With The Stars' Contestant

'I fell in love with Cloris Leachman,' Pussycat Dolls frontwoman says of the season-seven dancer.

Nicole Scherzinger is up against a number of celebs this season on "Dancing With the Stars," including Buzz Aldrin, Shannen Doherty and Pamela Anderson. But the celebrity dancer who still stands out as the Pussycat Doll's favorite is the one and only Cloris Leachman, who danced on the show back in season seven.

Scherzinger said she's taking some cues from Leachman during her "DWTS" run.

"I fell in love with Cloris Leachman when I saw her on 'Dancing With the Stars,' " she told MTV News. "She did things and had stamina at her age [83] that I don't even know I can do at my age [31]."

What impressed the Pussycat Dolls frontwoman about the octogenarian actress? "Just the personality she brought to the performances was so infectious," she said. "I commend her, and I look up to her for that."

This season, Scherzinger has her eye on Anderson, who she thinks will bring the most sex appeal to the dance floor. "She is just fierce to me," she said. "I'm scared of her, actually. She is the one. I don't know if I'll be able to take her down, but she's going to be hot and sizzling. She's gonna do her thing.

"I will leave the sexy part to Pamela Anderson! Because she's the hottest chick out there," Scherzinger continued. "For one, I never tried to be sexy or anything — for me the music's what brings out that sensuality. I'm just gonna be myself. [I'm] just gonna have fun with it. In the show, I'll be able to connect with everyone in a completely different light."

Tommy Lee Joins Deadmau5, Kelis Joins Benny Benassi At Ultra Music Festival

Above and Beyond, Swedish House Mafia also close out the two-day fest during WMC 2010.

MIAMI — With over 200 DJs vying for the attention of close to 100,000 people in attendance this Saturday at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, in the end it was an Italian Stallion, the holy trinity of Swedish dance music and a guy who dons the mask of a fallen mouse that reigned supreme. Yes, on the second and final day of UMF, held at Miami's Bicentennial Park and coinciding with the city's Winter Music Conference, fans were treated to a healthy dose of dance music talent.

British techno and house DJ Carl Cox closed out the night at the Carl Cox & Friends arena. Producer Paul Oakenfold, and Above and Beyond closed out action at the UMF Brazil Arena. But of course, the Ultra Main stage is where most gathered.

Italian house DJ Benny Benassi hit the stage in the early evening with a series of hair-raising, relentless party anthems that had the audience in a frenzy for almost the entire set. Along with an excellent remix of Jimmy Hendrix's "Purple Haze," the Grammy-winning DJ/producer spun his 2002 club hit "Satisfaction" and "Electro Sixteen." More notably, singer Kelis, who has worked with Benny on her upcoming Flesh Tone album, wore a metallic silver face mask and silver lace-up boots as she joined Benassi onstage for their collaboration "Spaceship" and the David Guetta-produced "Acapella."

And then came the trio of Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello — billed together as the all-star Swedish House Mafia. They're known for their dramatic thumping performances, and this one certainly fell in line with what fans have come to expect. SHM had the crowd jumping with Sebastian Ingrosso's hit "Kidsos," based on MGMT's "Kids," and then came "Meich Clocks," the Ingrosso mash-up using Coldplay's "Clocks." Supermode's (an Axwell/Angello group) "Tell Me Why" was also rabidly received. Of course, the highlight was their yet-unnamed new single, a mix of eerie atmosphere and euphoric resolution that had fans begging for more.

And certainly no one was prepared for Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee to take the stage with Canadian sensation Deadmau5 to close out the night — OK, that's not completely true: Tommy Lee was present when MTV News interviewed Deadmau5 (a.k.a. Joel Zimmerman) earlier this week. The two began the set with a treat fans have come to love WMC for, the debut of a brand-new song (so new that it's still untitled too). Lee departed after this initial song, and the 'Mau5 launched into an hour and 40 minutes of hits, including his own mix of Rage Against the Machine's "Bulls on Parade," "Strobe" and his biggest fan favorite "Ghosts 'N Stuff" (featuring Rob Swire). And, fittingly for the guy who frequently dons a mouse hat headpiece (he named himself after finding a fallen rodent inside his computer), Deadmau5 had the crowd in a fit of laughter when he killed the music and emitted the death sound effect from "Super Mario Brothers." Game over!
